good evening. it could have been worse if it not for the steady aim of a lone police officer facing down two heavily armed terrorists attacking a controversial event in texas. a prophet muhammad cartoon contest that many consider provocative, even promoting hate. tonight, abc news is learning more about one of the gunman and why he was not stopped even though the fbi had been watching him for ten years. here's abc's chief investigative correspondent brian ross. >> reporter: a sunday evening in garland, texas, outside of dallas. >> get back in the building. >> reporter: a barrage of bullets. as two islamic extremists begain gin a terror attack only to be out gunned by a texas traffic officer and his pistol a

>> let us no more islam, no more mosques no, more islamic schools. it is time for heritage. >> reporter: local police and the fbi beefed up security and it saved the day. authorities say the two gunmen elton simpson and his roommate nadir soofi pulled up to the hall and were blocked by a single police cruiser. >> both of them had assault rifles. came around the back of the car and started shooting at the police car. the police officer in that car began returning fire and struck both men taking them down. >> reporter: inside the crowd hears the sound of gun fire interrupting a live stream broadcast. >> shots just got fired. >> we don't know that for a fact. >> okay. >> we don't know that. >> then i think i better wrap it up myself. >> get the camera. mark? >> reporter: police ordered the crowds to move. >> we are going to move y'all in to the auditorium in just a

minute. we need everyone to remain calm. >> reporter: then the crowd begins to sing. ♪ and the rocket's red glare ♪ >> reporter: then outside, the two gunmen dead on the pavement. >> it is likely the people that do this may well rig themselves or their vehicles with bombs. so we started to take that precaution. there were no bombs found the vehicle. >> reporter: as the question is asked whether this was too much of a provocation by pamela geller. >> i do not contest her right to have this event or her right to free speech. all i'm saying is i think she should take responsibility for the consequences of her actions. >> you knew it was provocative, didn't you. >> free speech is provocative. >> reporter: you have the right to say things but is it good judgment. >> it is excellent judgment to stand in defense of free speech. who's going to decide what is good or forbidden, the islamic

and led him to allah and the life of a devout muslim. >> we are in shock and disbelief this could happen. >> reporter: five years ago the fbi arrested simpson for attempting to join an al qaeda group in somalia convicted of lying to fbi agents. only sentenced to probation but put on the no fly list and upset according to his former lawyer. >> felt like he was targeted because of his religious believes. >> reporter: over the last few months, simpson sent repeated twitter messages obtained by abc news about his growing dismay with his country. soon you won't be able to live in america as a muslim. the noose is tightening he wrote on march 14th. and then he wrote, time is short. on april 23rd he wrote of the upcoming drawing event in texas, when will they ever learn? and then yesterday, just minutes before the attack that would lead to his death, simpson sent this twitter message that he and

during the month of may as mother's day approaches we here at abc like to plan elaborate breakfast in bed surprises for special moms. people all over the country send us their stories. this year, we heard about one mom who's engaged in an act of friendship so amazing, to generous it really blew us away. here's abc's mara schiavocampo. neighborhood watches in this small suburb of new orleans, louisiana. >> we love you. >> reporter: rene redmann and amy dubuc have a friendship like few will ever know and one is about to give the other an extraordinary gift. >> amy is the most special person in the world to me. >> reporter: best friends since high school, the two were there for each other through thick and thin graduation wedding, never missing a moment of each other's lives. >> they kind of know what each over are going through and what each over are thinking. >> reporter: in their 20s, life took them down different paths. as amy started a family rene was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of just 25. with her husband daniel and friends by her side, she beat the er but three years later, it came back. this time on top of the diagnosis, doctors had more bad news. >> they told me that i might not be able to carry my own child in

the future. that was the worst day of my life. i could handle everything else. i can't remember a time when i didn't want to be a mother. right now, everybody's in this child-bearing age. so it seems like every day we were hearing a new pregnancy announcement. it was heart breaking to know we may never get our turn. >> reporter: rene and daniel researched adoption and they had some saved fertilized eggs for a potential sur gas tenialtential surragacy but never imagined the gift her friend would offer. >> daniel came home from work one day and said i need to tell
