good tuesday morning, everybody. i'm kayna whitworth. reena ninan is on assignment. >> i'm t.j. holmes. more details about the attack in texas. authorities working to learn more about those suspects. >> one of them had become well known to investigators in the past decade. susan saulny has the latest. >> reporter: the police in garland, texas, say it could have been so much worse. two islam ix extremists intended to shoot hundreds of people. they were outgunned by a lone traffic cop and his pistol. the american freedom defense initiative has been called a hate group by the southern poverty law center.

>> we're here for freedom. >> reporter: outside. 30-year-old elton simpson, the gunman. and his roommate pulled into the parking lot, get out of their car, and start shooting. the traffic cop returns fire and shoots them both dead. >> he did a very good job. and probably saved lives. >> reporter: the fbi had been investigating simpson since 2006. he was arrested once for trying to fight alongside an al qaeda group in somalia. he grew up in a phoenix neighborhood. a car accident ended his chances of playing basketball in college. he was convicted of lying to fbi agents. sentenced to probation. but put on the no-fly list. his growing dismay with his country posted on twitter. he wrote, when will they ever learn? susan saulny abc news washington. the other big story overnight. weather. drenching storms moving across the plains now. >> already hard-hit kansas

getting more rain. flash floods left cars underwater yesterday afternoon. about three inches of rain fell in a four-hour period in the town of manhattan. the heavy rains broke the 1908 rain record of 2.9 inches. and this is how one adventurous guy, we're calling him adventurous. he managed to hang out in all the rains. a nice kayak trip down the street. and apparently someone else is hanging out in a kiddie pool they were able to float around in. >> do what you have to do folks. the storms from the texas panhandle. up to the great lakes. slight chance that the storms could become severe during the day. so now, to baltimore. still on inch over freddie gray's death. tensions erupting again. large crowd gathered near the site of last week's protests.

friends, family neighbors and strangers gathered at the crash site some cried. others offered comfort and words of condolence. this happened last night saturday evening just before 7:00 p.m. an out-of-control corvette crashed into an apartment on livermore and mother and her 14-month-old child were killed. the driver was speeding and was drinking. this woman found her aunt and child on the ground moments after being run over. >> i hope forever. forever. i hope we get justice. for everything that happened. ♪ amazing
