live . we're tracking the spring storm bringing showers to the bay area. snow to the sierra and possible funnel cloud in the north bay. good afternoon i'm ama daetz. >> i'm larry beil. live in san francisco, gray skies in many areas today. the storm arrived this morning, brought showers to the south and east bay as well as the peninsula. >> in the north bay, a funnel cloud scare worried neighbors and was the talk of the town. >> the morning commute turned soggy in palo alto. this is what drivers were facing earlier today on interstate 280. windshield wipers turned on as a

steady stream of sprinkles came down there. >> check this out. snow in may. spencer christian has the update. >> unsettled is an understatement. lots of clouds over the bay area right now. all the precipitation is in the south bay. most of it is south of san jose. some of it verga. it's going south towards morgan hill and beyond. meanwhile, a shower activity in portions of 880 and 6780. wet pavement there. most of the remainder of the area is dry as batches of showers move from northeast to southwest. rainfall totals the last 24 hours, most locations received no measurable rain at all. san jose .200. there's still a slight chance of more showers falling. in fact, some pea-sized rail fell this morning in fremont. sent to us by jesus.

this. >> david my rick is describing the weird weather he witnessed this morning. here's what got his attention. something that looked like a funnel cloud forming north near lake sonoma. david was pretty startled. >> i was worried about my dream house blowing over. there was wind all kind of directions. >> luckily no damage at david's place or anywhere else around the city according to police. bob jones took notice too. >> it's scary to think about it. because i've been in tornadoes. >> the national weather service says despite its ominous appearance, it's unlikely this was a funnel loud u. cloud. instead, a downdraft of precipitation known as verga. definitely a strange weather day here. cornell bernard, abc 7 news. the high winds knocked down power lines in the north bay. this is video from highway 116 near petaluma in sonoma county. crews repaired the lines and got the power back in for more than a dozen customers. most of the power has been

restored. you can see what's showing up any time with the weather app. it's free on apple's app store or google play. more information at abc 7 news.com/app. search crews are trying to find an alameda county father and his two young kids who failed to return from a camping trip in a remote area of the sierra. the father is identified as nicholas va'a la hose of oakland. he's with his 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter. they were supposed to be back home by now. >> they were last seen camping in tahoe national forest in western sierra county. >> new video of the search under way. he was driving a 2015 black toyota tundra. the family had plenty of food and water and are confident they'll find them and bring them home. as mentioned nicholas lives in oakland with his two children and his wife. >> that's where we find reporter lyanne melendez with more. >> well, let me just clarify that the family owns those two small homes behind me.

they used to live there. they now rent both homes out. i spoke with the sister just a short time ago over the phone from new york. she says her brother was with the kids at his parents. now, apparently, they left on tuesday in separate cars. when he didn't return to oakland, they became worried and they immediately contacted the authorities. now, she also told me that the wife was not with them. she is visiting her mother outside of california. by the way, they're expecting their third child. >> neighbors remember the family when they lived on this quiet street in oakland. >> i am concerned. i want to know that he's well, that the children are well. we hope he comes back safely and i think the story will give exposure to it. if anyone has seen him or knows where he is it will be great to come forward with information. >> the 40-year-old father of two with another child on the way

works at this popular barbershop in oakland. those inside were reluctant to talk. but vendors from other shops did and were surprised to hear of his disappearance. >> shock and dismay. i'm worried for him and his kids. i want them to be found quickly. >> i've only met the kids once or twice. nick has been in here a lot to buy ice cream for his co-workers and friends. he's a really, really nice guy. it's sad to hear that you don't know where he is right now. >> he worked at pixar animation studios as an art production assistant. in oakland lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. morgan hill police are working to identify a man's decomposed body found today. they were on to road this morning. authorities say it appears the body has been there for quite some time. a landscaping crew found it doing maintenance work this morning at the business park nearby. san jose police are asking

for everyone to use social media to help them find the man in this video we're about to show you in the next 48 hours. he's accused of chasing a 13-year-old girl into her own home and attacking her. >> the video is scary here. this is the surveillance video of the encounter at her home. really a terrifying scene, especially as a parent. i tell you what you shudder to think what might have happened. this girl was very brave. matt keller has more from west san jose. >> may 5th was just like any other day for this 13-year-old girl walking from school to her west san jose home near stevens creek boulevard and lawrence expressway. this surveillance video shows the danger following her. the middle school student noticed the man when he approached her on the front porch, told her he was lost and asked her name and age. then he started to ask inappropriate questions. she tells us what happened next. >> that's when i decided to run inside the house because i already unlocked it.

i tried to slam the door on him. i couldn't. he gets inside. >> the next images from the home surveillance system shows the man grabbed her while she struggles and fights back. slamming her hand into his face. he backs off and the middle schooler walks away from him obviously terrified. she tried to grab something sharp or heavy to throw at him if he came at her again. >> he walked a few steps towards me and i thought he was going to grab me again. but he just turns around and looks out the door and just walks away. >> the young girl then ran into her parents' closet locked the door and began texting her parents. her dad called 9-1-1. police arrived and discovered this same man was a suspect in another attempted sexual assault on april 2nd. in that case, the man followed a 28-year-old woman into a restroom at the market at saratoga and moore park in west

san jose. that man also fought off the attacker. for the 13-year-old and her family, a new reality. life will not seem as safe anymore. >> they should be able to walk home from school. they shouldn't be kept captive because of those sick person out there. >> i'm really happy i'm safe and i fought him off. but i'm still really scared and i'm really low on trusting the outside world anymore. >> matt keller abc 7 news. they said san jose police are asking for everyone to use social media to help find the man in the video. we have posted the story on our abc 7 news facebook page. reporter david louie will have more at 5:00. more problems for b.a.r.t. commuters coming up. smoke causing more delays after yesterday's big slowdown. >> the public appearance patriots quarterback tom brady

down. amy holly field has more from the 24th street mission b.a.r.t. station in san francisco. >> trouble struck b.a.r.t. again this morning. look at this picture that b.a.r.t. rider britney tanner took of people evacuating the station today. there was smoke coming from a train. officials asked everyone to get off of it until they could clear the smoke. it got rolling again. but the issue caused about an eight-minute delay. >> i didn't really have a panic because it wasn't too bad. you worry a little bit because you're on the train, b.a.r.t. >> it was a minor speed bump compared to yesterday. >> a ten-inch section of track broke. yesterday was kind of rough. usually it's 55 minutes something like that to get here. yesterday it took about an hour and a half i think. >> the broken track as if it wasn't enough, a power outage

hit three east bay stations and the giants played at home. frustrated customers tried to find other ways home and found large lines and huge crowds every which way they turned. >> union was taking a while too. just that wait was a little long. so i was getting a little impatient. >> this comes as b.a.r.t. is trying to figure out how to deal with an aging system. officials did not want to comment morning saying they don't know if it broke because of age. while they investigate, the loyal passengers say they'll adjust. >> it's public transportation. so you kind of have to be prepared for it. it's always better than the freeway. >> while they were off-loading this train this morning, the station agent says a passenger had a seizure. the passenger is expected to be okay. but it was intense. >> amy hollyfield. abc 7 news. getting around the bay area

could be trickier than normal this weekend. cal trans is closing the san mateo bridge for maintenance beginning tomorrow night at 10:00 until 5:00 monday morning. crews will be surfacing. a similar thing will happen on memorial day as well. >> a sonoma county man is accused of taking money from people who came to him for help. this man calls himself a doctor and offers treatment services throughout the bay area. >> once he got my money, it was like i didn't exist. he has no soul or more or less. no nothing. >> this is all about money. >> dan noyes investigates the doctor's background and facilities he's running. that's tonight at 11:00. quarterback tom brady will make his first public appearance in a matter of minutes. since an nfl ordered investigation showed he was -- he's scheduled to appear at

salem state university. a report by nfl appointed investigators ted wells concluded that two patriots employees violated rules regarding game balls and brady was generally aware of plans to doctor the footballs to his liking underinflated. it could include a possible suspension. his agent blasted the investigation saying it omitted key facts and buried others. brady himself refused to turn over his cell phone or e-mail records in the investigation. the golden state warriors wrapped up their final practice in oakland this afternoon before flying out to memphis tomorrow for game 3 of nair playoff series against the grizzlies. warriors admitted they were on edge at the start of practice after losing game 2. they really looked on edge in game 2. draymond green says the hostile memphis fans will not bother him at all. >> they don't jack me up. i don't expect them to be happy

air and online at abc 7 news.com. warriors got to get it together for game three. get back on track. i think they will. little shake any game 2. >> it's been a busy day. >> it's been a bit shaky hasn't it? >> unsettled. scattered showers, a few little hailstones here and there. things are calming down a bit. >> here's a look at live doppler 7 hd. lots of cloud cover and moisture as well in the south bay. especially in the gilroy area. much of this is verga evaporating before it hits the ground. some of it is hitting the ground. we have wet spots on highway 101 south of san jose. bear that in mind. this morning of what appears to be a basketball. we talked with the national weather service. there's no official statement from the national weather service. the con ken sus is this was a shaft of verga, evaporating moisture. as it descended it took on a

funnel-like shape thus causing the concern. it probably was not a funnel cloud. no danger. live view from the east bay host camera showing partly cloudy skies. these are the forecasts. showers diminish overnight. a sunnier day tomorrow and mild weather for mother's day which is great news. satellite animation shows this upper level low diving southward. this is the system that has the unsettled weather and produced showers. it's taking showers down into the l.a. area. so let's start our forecast animation, 7:00 this evening. most of the immediate bay area will be dry. as we see the system continue to push southward taking its moisture with it, we might see a couple pockets of light precipitation developing in the early morning hours. again, south of san jose around gilroy maybe towards monterrey bay. it looks like the central part of the bay area will not have any traffic problems tomorrow morning during the commute

associated with weather. later in the day tomorrow, it will be a sunnier day. we might see buildups of clouds and scattered showers in the higher elevations of the north bay later tomorrow afternoon. winter weather advisories in effect until 5:00 in the afternoon. additional snow above 6,000 feet. back to the bay area tonight. a calm night with showers diminishing diminishing. showers -- tomorrow a sunnier day than today was. high temperatures mainly up to 60 on the coast where it will be breezy to upper 60s, low 70s around the bay. low to mid-70s in the inland areas. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. by the time we get to the weekend, virtually no chance of precipitation. a mild day for mother's day with highs in the mid-70s inland up to 70 in the bay. upper 50s on the coast. a steady pattern of temperatures in that range with partly cloudy skies through next thursday. all right. thank you. >> up next, actress sophia vergara is honored for her role

here are your headlines today at 4:30. a spring storm has arrived in the sierra. a much needed dusting of snow in the county. here in the bay area rain is falling in palo alto. spencer christian says the showers are heading south and will be long gone by the weekend. don't change your mother's day plans. spencer will have the full forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> right now crews are searching for an alameda county father and his two young kids missing since tuesday after going camping in a remote area of the sierra. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony tweeted this picture of the man and his children. laura will have a live report at 5:00. the text messaging scandal involving the police department will get extra scrutiny.

the district attorney created a task force including three retired judges. they'll determine if there's racial bias within the department. >> ama the judge is including a former associate justice of the state supreme court, all considered experts in civil rights and law enforcement reforms. their work could take until the end of the year. >> this retired jouj -- >> these three retired judges from outside san francisco will work for three, viewing 3,000 arrests over the last decade conducted by 14 officers linked to a text messaging scandal. homophobic and racist texts were revealed during a federal investigation into now convicted former copy an furminger. the question, did the views expressed in the messages result in biased arrest. >> the goal is to obviously, number one assess whether anyone that has been

incarcerated or convicted should receive redress. >> the district attorney's office says even before the former judges came on board, the task force review has led to eight cases being dismissed. an estimated 60 to 70 have been identified as problematic. several rights leaders welcome the -- >> far too many people who were sworn to uphold the law have been perpetrators by their bias and -- >> the former judges will go beyond the text message scandal to also evaluate if there's a deeper culture of bias within the sfpd. >> police officers have to abide by the constitutional protection that is are guaranteed to each and every one of us. >> police chief greg sur supports the review. >> i would say that any police report that these officers are

i am spencer christian from the east bay camera in emeryville. dark clouds over the bay but a diminishing chance of showers this evening. the accuweather forecast is coming up. at 4:36, another look at the afternoon commute. 101 in san jose. it's the usual backup in the southbound direction. even a carpool lane is moving slowly at this hour. northbound is much better. see a few drops of rain on the lens there as we've had rain in the south bay. traffic moving pretty nicely up why is there a merman in the pool? why is there a kevin federline ice sculpture? why is there a grilled cheese riding piggyback on a cheeseburger? why? cuz, things get weird late at night. that's why i make the munchie meal. it's a box fulla crazy craveables like the stacked grilled cheeseburgr or chick-n-tater melt, plus halfsie fries, two tacos and a drink all for just six bucks. so get one tonight, and get weird.

you're looking at homes ripped to shreds. torn apart by dozens of tornadoes across the plains. one woman drowned in oklahoma. she was in a storm shelter. elizabeth herr shows us one family's escape. >> no match for mother nature. >> really scary. we heard -- we thought -- >> what these boys and their teacher, hiding in their storm shelter saved their lives. >> kids were freaking out. i was scared. >> it was a close call for this father and his frightened children. they were stuck in their shelter until help arrived. >> we couldn't get out. there was a winch but it wasn't busting this off. the guy next door came by with a bar and broke it right off. >> from oklahoma to nebraska,

texas and kansas -- >> oh, my god. >> we have a roof that flew through the air here. >> some drivers were dodging flying debris as tornadoes swirled through the area bringing with them torrential downpours. setting a new daily rainfall record in oklahoma city with just over 7 inches of rain injuring and trapping residents. >> we had a 17-year-old male victim trapped underneath this rv over here. >> today, with their homes torn apart and their belongings strewn all over residents begin to pick up the pieces. officials warn stay alert. >> it's very dangerous. be weather aware. >> the national weather service says 51 tornadoes ripped across the great plains and more severe storms are on their way this week. >> elizabeth herr abc news new york. frightening. >> time to get a check on our weather. not quite frightening but we got rain. >> yes spencer and we needed it. >> we need more. but we're not going to get much more.

here's a look at live doppler. areas of showers well to our south down in the -- south of san jose. down towards gilroy and over towards the bay right now. this is real. some of it is verga. there is rain hitting the ground there. it's pretty wet picture there. national scene tomorrow, look for showers from the northern rockies into the central plains. thunderstorms up and down the mississippi valley. some thunderstorms out to the south atlantic and mid-atlantic coast as well. we have active weather coming our way across the state of california. let's look at what tomorrow brings. more snow light snow over the sierra and showers and perhaps thunder showers in the lower elevations of the sierra. breezy on the central coast. reaching into southern california. the storm that brought us the unusual weather today diving southward to produce unusual weather. here in the bay area tomorrow, breezy conditions at the coast. few lingering clouds. sunnier day than today was. there is a chance in the afternoon hours, buildup of clouds and maybe showers in the higher elevations of the north
