live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> we were stuck in traffic for 30 to 45 minutes. >> one driver among many. for some it took nearly two hours to get across the bay bridge today. sunday traffic looking very much like a weekday rush hour. >> and tonight a live look at traffic on the bay bridge toll plaza. still very heavy right now. good evening everyone. >> we will start with a live look from our san mateo bridge tower cam. you can see work is underway right now. abc7 news reporter janet ow with the latest. >> the crews will be working until the last minute. cal trans says that a little more than 100,000 drivers use this bridge every day. they have to find alternate routes during a very busy weekend.

as work continued on the san mateo bridge throughout the day it was stop and go along the bay bridge, an alternate route for many drivers. not only is it mother's day weekend, but there was a giants game and that alone can cause twice the traffic jam getting in and out of the city. >> we had heard the bridge was closed. we decided to take the train and avoid all of this. >> pain giants fans say they cut their commutes significantly by taking public transportation. >> we would rather stay away from the freeways. >> those have to drive gear up for a long haul. >> i know there is traffic going all the way. there is traffic going all the way. >> past the bay bridge and going back to sacramento. >> for the first time in five decades all lanes were shutdown. >> we appreciate everyone's patience. we know traffic was significantly higher. >> crews are doing routine maintenance work. >> two separate contractors.

traffic heading into the city is still pretty heavy given its -- it's past 11:00 and then heading back to the east bay the headlights we are seeing progress there. it will get better over the course of the next hour. it has been a long weekend. >> definitely. for the latest on the bridge closure watch the abc7 morning news. traffic starts at 4:30. if you have signed up for alerts you will be notified as soon as the bridge opens. you can get an app free on the app store or google play. bart street will be back open after a weekend long maintenance project. passengers had to use a bus bridge to get from one side to the other. the line will be closed seven more weekends between now and august. the next round of maintenance will start on saturday may 23rd. starting tomorrow cal train is rolling out an extra 6th car on sun trains during

commute hours. each extra car will add 150 seats and standing room. cal train ridership has been increasing for tour straight years now. many trains are operating at or beyond capacity during the commute. a series of fires could be a sign of things to come. three wildfireses broke out in the bay area today and fire season hasn't even officially begun. as abc7 news reporter lilian kim tells us, firefighters believe this is only a taste of what's to come. >> cal fire sent a full response. in all 90 firefighters converged on san bruno mountain in south san francisco. the heavy winds made things difficult at first. but eventually ended up helping. >> the wind was in our favor. in this instance the wind was quick and was also in our favor and pushing away from the home. we are able to direct it away from the home and make an attack on the fire and get it suppressed before it threatened structures. >> nearly 12 acres burned and the cause is under

investigation which is also the case for a brushfire that broke out in hayward near foothill boulevard. the fire spread to eucalyptus trees. the same trees that went up in flames in marin county. four acres burned in the eucalyptus grove near 100 feet of the shoreline. while the weather was in their favor, the conditions on the ground were not. >> when fire was driven by is what the heavy down fuel such as logs and branches. they weren't exposed to much moisture over the winter. those produce a lot of intensity. >> firefighters believe it is a sign for things to come and in this time of drought crews are prepared for what they expect to be a busy fire season. lilian kim abc7 fuse. >> in san jose investigators are looking into what caused an early morning fire that quickly spread from one house to another. it began around 2:00 on south 2nd street near interstate 280. the first crews on scene

called for additional help. residents were able to escape the flames and the red cross is helping eight people who are displaced. a scare for passengers on a flight from san francisco to north carolina. united flight 256 to raleigh was diverted 20 piedmont try yad international airport in greensboro for what officials are calling a mechanical issue. a flight landed without incident and no passengers were injured. minor damage after a tornado hit north texas today. the bigger problem? flooding. emergency crews have been rescuing people stranded on flooded streets and homes by flash floods following a day of torrential rains. richard cath tu has the latest. >> salvation from the sky. swollen floodwaters threatening to turn deadly. one by one the stranded victims were plucked from harm's way. in some cases the personal touch. rescuers repelled down ropes and then sent their precious

cargo off to safety. these men left clinging to life as the floodwater crept higher jie. if you want to be rescued you want to be rescued by these guys. >> one by one they were buck -- buckled in and lifted to dry land. it was a watery graveyard for many automobiles. if it wasn't water, it was wind. >> do you see any rotation? >> more than 50 reported tornadoes tore across the heartland. it -- the worse was the ef-3 tornado going through sisco, texas. at least one person died. >> i lived in sisco for over 10 years now and i haven't seen anything like this in a longtime. >> the high winds swirled these deck chairs into a pool. farther north a spring whiteout in colorado. in south dakota sunday services became a narrow escape as a reported tornado destroyed the church and much of the town. elsewhere record snow. they are teen .5 inches.

the most -- 13.5 inches. even a springtime snowman. on monday the threat moves to the east and then through the refer valley. a threat of more severe weather and potential tornadoes. richard cantu abc news, new york. >> abc7 news meteorologist drew tuma has been keeping an eye out on the storms. >> a look at what they are facing tonight. drew? >> for a 6th day in a row folks have seen the severe weather moving through the plains. taking a look you can see an area of low pressure through the midwest that is dragging a cold front and tornado watches still in effect at this hour through the overnight for parts of texas, louisiana and arkansas. so the threat is not over tonight. this entire threat shifts to the east tomorrow. a slight risk from chicago and as far south of brownsville texas for strong tornadoes, very large hail and damaging winds once again. back here, a closer look at

bonnie's owners say they knew a stranger was in the house because bonnie hisses at people she doesn't know. the homeowner confronted the man and he ran away. >> it is the first time in my 31-year career that i heard of the cat being the one to let them be aware of something wrong going on in their house. >> good cat. police searched the area and were not able to find the burglar. oakland police are searching for suspects after a smash and grab burglary at the cvs pharmacy. the suspects smashed through the front windows of the store on mountain boulevard. this incident happened in the morning before the store opened. police say there is surveillance video and it appears they did not hit the pharmacy and for the fatly nobody was hurt. if you live and work in the east bay get ready for tap water that may smell and taste strange. officials say it is because of the drought. there is so little snow melt available that the agency is having to use warmer water

from the top of the party reservoir in the sierra. it was exposed to more sunlight and has a strong odor. one hardware store is expecting a big run on carbon filters that take away the smell and improve the taste. >> it -- you take all of that stuff out of there. it takes the odor and smell out. >> water officials say chilling the water will take away the smell. the water started flowing today and should reach customers by tuesday or wednesday. during the drought water conservationists want every bottling plant to close. the bottled water comes from private underground springs. last week starbucks stopped buying water for the ethos brand from the state. a student newspaper is calling for the school to ban all nestle products until nestle stops bottling california water.

6 degrees shy of the normal 74. the trend of below normal temperatures continues for much of the seven-day forecast. it is 52 in san francisco and 53 in oakland. a cool 52 in fremont and san jose. checking in with a temperature of 54 degrees. the story we are tracking high pressure to the south. this was responsible for the deep marine layer and for the fog and low clouds persisting over the weekend. you look to the north and we are tracking a cold front. what this will do first is it will clear out our skies tomorrow morning. the clouds won't linger as long and then it will give us a reinforcing shot of cool air as it moves through on monday into tuesday. so the future weather will show you early tomorrow morning 5:00 you notice the fog is not as widespread as it has been. by 8:00 a.m. we are starting to see sunshine and clear skies into the north bay. as the cold front moves through it clears out. everyone will see sunshine including the coastal

115-story building. >> my goodness. new at 11:00 a woman is recovering after falling from mount diablo. the chp showed this video of a helicopter hoisting her off of a rugged, remote area. the 74-year-old victim went to hospital with a leg injury and three officers helped out with the rescue. a busy night for the chp. officer justin fedderly helped rescue injured owl on the 101 near hern avenue. he captured the owl with a blanket and took it to an emergency hospital. it was just last month where another officer helped with injured animal. if the warriors are going to win they will have to do it

c >> live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> good evening. >> in tonight's headlines traffic finally moving on the bay bridge. traffic is pretty much dissipated at this point after gridlock all weekend. nothing like trying to get to mother's day brunch and stuck on the bridge. it took some people two hours to get across the bridge even as recently as an hour ago. >> here is a look at our tower camera where the bridge remains closed as the construction crews finish up a long resurfacing project. the bridge will re-open at 5:00 in the morning. we will have updates on the morning news at 4:30. >> a fire on san bruno mountain burned trel acres this afternoon -- 12 acres this afternoon. this is one of three brushfires that occurred. the firefighters say the drought could bring more wildfires all summer long.
