6:30. let's move on. graphic and disgusting details ed in a san francisco courtroom when a former political consultant to the mayor faces child pornography charges, six felony counts of child pornography. live at the hall of justice with the story. katie? >> reporter: prrs say enrique pierce was in possession of nearly 5,000 images of child pornography, including video in. they say children and infants being sexually assaulted and in some photos the children are tied up. the district attorney's office says that he is a threat to public safety because, in addition to the pornography, investigators say that they found more than 100 images on his cell phone showing boys ages 7 to 12 who do not appear to know they're being photographed. one boy was on a man's shoulders at a giants' celebration at city hall. the d.a. is concerned that

police say he has told another man that he would like to share a boy with a man. the judge today raised the bail from $250,000 to $400,000. >> i think that based on the totality of the circumstances, the bail that has been set is very appropriate, and i believe that the judge made the ruling accordingly. >> he'll be posting bail and getting out, we'll be fighting these charges and be reviewing and taking a look at allegations nevg over the next few weeks. he's lived and worked here over 20 years. >> reporter: today's hearing revealed how the investigation against pierce was initiated. investigators say a man, but calling a witness got an online message and the two started communicating about their mutual sexual interest in boys and pierce ultimately sent that witness pornographic pictures. authorities searched his home last thufrs thursday when they arrested him. the d.a.'s office asked us to

not identify the witness and they're not saying if he's a citizen or law enforcement officer. katie marzullo, abc 7 news. an oakland community was stunned when a 14-year-old boy was shot and killed by an unknown stranger last february. today the man behind the senseless killing was charged with murder. and now, we've learned the victim wasn't the only target. live at oakland technical high school where he was a student. >> reporter: he attended oakland tech. today in court his family caught a glimpse of the alleged shooter. now his father says, he believes the shooter was mad about something. mad at the world. a mash of 1st shoot-out between a suspect and hayward police provided evidence to link 28-year-old donald higgins to the murder of the 14-year-old ellis, several miles away in oakland. >> i'm happy. i'm happy.

finally some justice dealing with my son's murder. >> reporter: that's the 14-year-old's father who was in court today as higgins was charged with several counts of murder and attempted murder. one day after his son's death, the alleged gunman barricaded himself inside his mother's home in hayward after police spotted him in white 2004 infinity suv. >> when the officer attempted to stop him, he jumped out of the car, and shots were fired between the suspect and the officer. >> reporter: his suv matched the description given earlier by fibe other victims at california state university east bay. several hours after higgins killed the 14-year-old, he shot several times at their car. they were not hurt. >> it hurts because i basically lost my son for nothing because somebody else had a hitfit of rage. i lost the most important person to me. >> reporter: after the shoot-out, police found a handgun with .30 round magazine. the bullets matched casings recovered at the hayward

shooting scene. police have evidence and statements that connect higgins to the murder of the 14-year-old. he attended oakland tech a school district spokesperson described him as prom it'sing student and football player. >> at his age, you're just beginning to paint a picture of what you'll be. who knows what he could become, and that's a tragedy he'll never have the ability to achieve that potential. four victims in a deadly dui crash last night have been identified late today. three were 18-year-old, young women who attended three different high schools in gilroy. the fourth was a 24-year-old man, the driver is the sole survivor. he's been arrested on suts special of dui have vehicular manslaughter. the dissister of one of the victim is in disbelief. >> she had no control.

i'm sure she didn't know when she got in the car this was going to happen, i don't think any of them knew. >> students at christopher high school, where one of the victims went to school have been asked to wear black to school in memory of those who died. outrageous robbery in the middle of the night at stanford shopping center. you can see the damage after the newly built bloomingdale's hit by a crash and grab. thieves escaped with a lot of jewelry. vic lee live at the shopping center with the story. they were in and out in two minutes. >> reporter: well, dan crash and grabs appear to be the m.o. of choice now. no more throwing bricks or rocks to break into a store. they now use cars as battering rams most of them stolen, like the one today. and for the public, it's still a novelty. >> i think people will do anything they can to get anything now. >> that's insane. in this area, too? >> reporter: customers at the shopping center were shocked at

boildness boildness boldness of the roshs. after 4:00 in the moshing a jeep cherokee smashes the glass door, three people run into the store. the police agent describes what happened next. they were wearing black hoodies, using some type of tool, smashed open several jewelry glass cases, removes several items of jewelry. >> reporter: it happened quickly. thieves were in the store no longer than two minutes. a veteran officer finds the jeep, he knew where to go. a small road next to the creek where stolen cars have been dumped before but the thieves have left along with the loot. the second crash and grab robbery in palo alto in three month. the photography store hit in mid-february. two men rammed the glass door pushed back the steel chain gate, enough to crawl into the store. they shattered glass cabinets and stole cameras and gear.

saleman couldn't believe bloomy's was hit by a crash and grab too. >> i'm surprised they keep doing this, and getting away with it. so hopefully the police will finally catch them. >> reporter: san francisco has had at least a half dozen crash and grabs since last fall. including this one at wells fargo. so far no arrests. vic lee abc 7 news. 17-year-old boy admitted to police today he was part of a brazen home invasion in the upscale ever green neighborhood of san jose. the teenager one of the those caught breaking into the house. the familiary ran to the bathroom and called police. the intruders took off. police are searching for the second rob. >> another dose of spring moisture on wait to the bay area. you might not know it from this live picture. looks picturesque. above our camera in the east bay hills. abc 7 weather here with live

an extensive investigation, paid for by the fees we pay here at the toll plaza as far as safety is concerned, the steel rods are key in supporting the bridge in the event of an earthquake. >> reporter: at issue it integrity of the steel rod, also known as bolts on the new bay bridge, after saltwater discovers at the foundation of the landmark tower. >> where the salt came from, we don't know yet. could have come from when constructed, could be coming from other ways it can get in there. one way could be the bay water coming in there. we don't know yet. >> reporter: during testing a steel rod found to have corroded and fractured, possibly due to water exposure. further testing showed corrosive chloride in the sleeve that encases 25-foot long rod. crews are going through more than 400 to assess the severity of the situation. the first time the steel rods broke two years ago they were repairs at the cost of $45 million. >> but we are mindful of the costs, mindful of who should be

responsible for this. >> reporter: metropolitan transportation commission, one of three organizations on the bridge's oversight panel says $4 million collected from bay area toll bridges will be used to investigate the problem. they're not sure how much more it will be cost to fix it. toll payers have mixed feelings. >> $4 million i just don't know what to say about that. >> at the end of the day you know, we're paying for it one way or another. now we're backtracking. >> if there's nothing we can do about the $4348 million going forward it's going to have be spent to keep the bridge in place. >> reporter: they're within budget for unplanned expenses. >> meantiming look for longer commutes and heavier traffic over the next 30 years. that's the warning from u.s. secretary of transportation anthony fox. he was in silicon valley today. abc 7 news reporter david lily caught. with him as he looked to new technology for solutions. >> reporter: think traffic is

bad now? the u.s. secretary of transportation. >> for those of you who enjoy riding next to trucks on the road, get ready. it's going to get worse. >> reporter: by worse the secretary means 65% increase in truck traffic. that's why he's in silicon valley talking to ceos of companies and seeking their help. over the next 30 years freeway congestion will worsen as the population grows by 70 million. climate change will put some airports under water. he's concerned about how local and state government along with the federal government will manage the transportation challenge. >> one of our biggest challenges as a country is that we don't have national goals in transportation anymore. think about the transcontinental railroad a big call to action for the country. >> reporter: many decisions made locally. stanford university uses economic pressure to drive cars on campus. >> if you choose to drive your car you have to pay $500 to park. we're trying to push people from going over 70% of our commuters driving alone to less than 50%

we'll have cloudy skies maybe a spot or two of moisture will have moved in already. certainly by 5:00 tomorrow as the commute begins we expect to see areas of scattered showers. later in the morning hours, organized showers and heavy locally heavy downpours likely by about 9:00 10:00 a.m. notice all shifting towards east bay by midst morning. and that will be the consent traths tration of the heaviest rainfall through the midday hours and into the early afternoon tomorrow. although most parts of the bay area will get some wet weather. the conservation on the east bay. tomorrow lingering showers. through friday morning 5:00 rainfall totals will be from tenth of an inch up to a quarter of an inch for most locations in the bay area. but the weather spots in east bay could receive half an inch to an inch. in the sierra, winter storm warning is in effect for our, well central sierra around tahoe region 4 to 6 inches of

and we need to break through those to do the best work we can do give these victims dignity and give them a voice. >> a recent study found reports of sexual assaults on college campuses doubled between 2009 and 2013. again, one in five has been a victim. california schools have until july 1st to enact policies ensuring law enforcement is notified after a sexual assault. >> san francisco police are warning residents of a new scam targeting older women in their homes. investigators say these two men enters six homes during the first week of may and stole valuables. a woman -- a man tells the homeowner their neighbor is installing a new fence and needs to take measurements. he's in the backyard with the homeowner, a second suspect ransacks the house. >> runs through the house stealing all of the jewelry, bracelets, rings. anything they can hold. specifically gold, silver and

in engineer in the philadelphia train crash once worked for cal train. brandon bostian was an amtrak employee at the time to drive cal train before 2011. he now lives in queens new york. here are new details on last night's crash. bostian's linked in profile indicates he's worked at amtrak nine years help ss le he declined to provide testimony to police. abc news reporter karen traverse has the late jeeft investigatorest. >> investigators are sifted through mangled metal and debris. data shows the train was traveling 106 miles per hour before it derailed, more than twice the speed limit for that part of the track. >> just moments before the derailment the train was placed into engineer induced braking, and this means that the engineer

applied full emergency brake application. >> reporter: the engineer is identified as 32-year-old brandon bostian of queens new york. all seven cars plus the engine broke off the track. >> like a bang. >> the trains tilted over and rolled. >> reporter: amtrak say there's were 238 passengers and 5 crew members on board the train. seven confirmed fatalities including a 20-year-old, midshipman at the u.s. naval academy in annapolis. >> this tragedy shocked us all in the worst way. >> reporter: and jim gains who worked for the associated press. >> it is incredible that so many people walks way from that scene last night, and i don't know how that happened but for the grace of god. >> reporter: there are still some people unaccounted for. may ur nutter says they have not matched the passenger manifest they received from amtrak with the information from local hospitals. it could be because some

passengers maybe didn't board the train last night or some passengers haven't checked in with officials but at this point, that's unclear. karen travers abc 7 news philadelphia. breaking news in the scram area. a wildfire burning close to homes in fair oaks. cal fire has at least one helicopter and crews on the ground fighting it. no word on how many acres but it doesn't appear any homes have been damaged at this point but it's been breezy today. that isn't helping. this is near the american river in what is called the sayilor bar area south of bluff lane. there is a lot of smoke. this fire spread quickly. but they do have crews trying to deal with it and keep away from those homes in fair oaks. documents made public offer conflicting accounts of what happened in a bus crash on interstate 5 last year. ten people were killed last april when a fedex truck driver drifted into the bus's path, it was taking high school students on a college campus tour. one passenger says the fedex

driver was slumped over but the documents show they was in good health, and not using a cell phone at the time. investigators have not reached any conclusions about exactly what caused that tragedy. the summer vacations right around the corner you might try booking hotel rooms online. >> it may be convenient but it might not be the best way to secure the room you actually want. >> michael finney is here to look into what's going on. >> you'll be remembering this online absolutely. experts say booking on websites like expedia and travelocity are fine but third party sites that can cause you trouble. >> reporter: joel wide booked his hotel room six months in advance. >> i knew that the hotels would completely fill up for this particular convention. >> reporter: he needed a room close to the convention. >> because of my medical problems, i really needed to not

have to walk very far. >> reporter: the hilton anaheim hotel adjoins the anaheim convention center. he found what he thought was the phone number for the hotel online. you know, specifically i asked is this hilton? >> reporter: they said it was a reservation desk. but when he arrived at the hotel, there was no reservation on record and the hotel was sold out. joel didn't have a confirmation number called his credit card company on the information on the charge he knew he paid months before. >> american express immediately said, well here's an order that was placed for you. >> reporter: but it wasn't the hilton. it was a motel. turns out the reservation was made through a third party company named reservation counter. the hilton was apologetic and found him a room at one of their sister properties but it was several blocks away. >> as a result i spent more time walking, et cetera than i needed to.

and less time at the different programs. >> reporter: mary ann is the spokesperson for the american hotel and lodging association. >> with the hotel industry is really concerned about is booking sites that are using a variety of marketing tactics to make it seem like you're at the direct hoelth booking site. >> reporter: this is exactly what happened to joel. >> they'll use the hotel's logo they'll use pictures, they'll use maps. >> reporter: joel tried to dispute the hotel charges through his credit card company but they count go for that. so he called 7 on your side, we contacted reservation counter. and immediately joel heard from the company. they offered an apology and a refund. >> 99% of the time booking online is fine. but we really want to make consumer as wear that they should be on the lookout for this scam. >> reporter: american hotel and lodging association is urging the federal trade commission to crack down on websites that are third parties and mislead people. >> that's amazing.

behave themselves. uc berkeley professor russell is working on it. >> to make sure mathematically proven that the robots will be on our side. >> reporter: russell is one of the world's leading experts on artificial intelligence. he points to the johnny depp movie what the world might be like with super intelligent machines. the machine is able to figure out how to cure blindness and resurrect the dead and cure the planet's environment. >> reporter: but the computer connects to the internet and try to carry its goals too far. russell says that's a serious risk in the future. he believes the way to prevent it is create computers that learn human values and put them in context. >> even before we reach the level of super intelligent system we will have systems that can lead everything that's ever written and extract information from it. >> that's a way off. but videos show types of machine learning that is already
