abc7 news. you. >> thank you alan. turning to other news one of the deadliest train derailments in recent years is under investigation tonight near philadelphia. we learned the engineer has ties to the rails here in the bay area. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live at the cal train station. cornell? >> ama, we learned the engineer who was driving the amtrak train that crashed in philadelphia previously worked for cal train and was likely very familiar with this stretch of track from san francisco down to the south bay. the 32-year-old ran some trains on the cal train system before 2011. during that time he lived in san francisco. his attorney says he has no recollection of the crash and he is cooperating with investigators. seven people died in last night's derailment. federal investigators say the train was traveling at 106 miles per hour, double the

speed limit. these are images from inside the mangled cars. they say it was a moment of chaos. >> i was thrown against the girl next to me and against the window. people on the other side of the aisle were falling on top of us. >> investigators say the engineer applied full emergency brakes before the crash. abc news learned he has turned over a blood sample and his cell phone to investigators. he suffered a concussion and an injury to his leg. live in san carlos, carnel bernard abc7 news. phi four people are in custody -- four people are in custody. officers were investigating a fraud case and witnesses say it was like a scene out of the movies. >> all of a sudden these cops had one cop on the ground. they drew their guns and two dudes were on the ground and

arrested. >> the mountain view officer was taken to a local hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. >> a high profile political consultant is in jail in san francisco with a new higher bail amount. bail for enrique pierce was set at $400,000. pierce is facing six felony counts including possession and distribution of child pornography. he had nearly 5,000 images of child pornography. they found images on pierce's cell phone showing boys under the age of 12. >> based on the toe tall tee of the circumstances the bail that has been set is appropriate. i believe the judge made the ruling accordingly. >> pierce's attorney disagrees with the bail amount saying pierce is not a public safety threat. >> renters and property owners squared off. they are urging city leaders to expand rent control and other tenant relief as rents

they are still searching. he didn't have clear answers as to why any homing beacons may not be helping in that effort. he did say they have not picked up signals and they have thought made contact with that crew. i have been trying to figure out a way to show you how scared people are in kathmandu following the earthquake. outside my window there are several people who are camped out on the ground. that's because the hotel has allowed people to come in and set up their tents. they recognize that people are still afraid and it may rattle their homes apart. so many are worried they will get crushed in their own home. abc7 news. well, next on abc7 news we have to go through security when we fly right? you may not realize some pilots and flight attendants do not. >> a special report on the loophole some say is putting

tonight a new government report is calling into question whether bomb detecting scaners and x ray machines at the airport are properly maintained. that is one concern, but there is another. why are the airline employees sidestepping the security equipment and walking on to the planes? eric thomas explains how it is all happening at all bay area airports. >> at oakland international airport while you wait to get your bags checked flight crews lineup at a door clearly marked do not enter. security checks their bags and waives them through a logged door not checking their bags. >> i think they have to have everything they carry with them screened as well. >> everybody should go through security. i really do. if we have to do it they should do it too. >> it is not just happening at oakland, but san jose mineta

and san francisco general. we found crews being waived through security and the transportation security administration, the tsa thinks it is okay. >> it is ridiculous. >> she is the former inspector general for the department of transportation. this system is a huge loophole in the security system. >> she is talking about the known crew member program. it allows pilots and flight attendants to bypass the normal screening process at 60 airports nationwide. >> it is like we have forgotten the lessons of september 11th 2001. we don't know who the terrorists may be targeting. we don't know who may pose a danger. >> but even in new york city where the tragedy unfolded the pilots and crew strolled through a secure gate entirely bypassing the screening machines and rolling their suitcases unchecked into a supposedly screened area. >> we don't want you on a plane with things that

shouldn't be on the plane. >> pilots and crew members have entered this way through doorways like that 31 million times carrying unchecked bags and there has never been a problem. the tsa says it gets quote realtime positive verification and validation of each crew member status as an active airline employee. everyone in the program undergoes an fbi background check. >> the airline pilot association says the program is a vital component to a multi layer screening process that allows the tsa to refocus the security resources and increase efficiency and significantly reduce wait times and security lines. but that's not an excuse to fore go full screenings. she points to where pilots have screened psychological screenings and later caused problems. in march german innings with pilot lubitz crashed into the

there is a possibility of thunder later tomorrow and it is going to be dry for the weekend. we are watching this trough developing off the coast. that's where the showers are developing, and there is an area of low pressure that is associated with it. that low, the main low is going to make its way down toward southern california. we are not going to get all of the energy but enough that we will talk about measurable rain. right now we have the cloud cover around. scattered showers for the start of your morning commute. you may need more time especially with the damp roadways. now at 11:00 down -- downpours are possible through 1:00 p.m. you will notice red showing up and maybe a thunderstorm in the afternoon hours. and then a few showers remain at 5:00 so your evening rush hour doesn't look as bad. as far as the rainfall totals

a half an inch to an inch for the wettest spots. a 10th to a quarter of an inch by friday morning. and then sierra expecting snow. it will run until friday morning. chain controls are possible and be prepared for the possibility of delays. four to six inches is expected above 6,000 feet. the temperatures will be 46 in napa and 52 oakland. san jose and livermore in the low 50s. you will see quite a bit of cloud cover with slick spots. make sure vut umbrellas. you will see the temperatures peaking in the mid60s inland. 60ly oakland and 63 santa rosa and 65 san jose. and 63 in santa cruz. the accu-weather seven-day forecast. you notice the scattered showers and possibility of thunder. maybe a lingering shower early on and then we are going with
