strikes near our radar site just to the northwest near hopland. watching a few showers developing and then the stuff is just moving from south to north. some of this is quieting down. so far more than 300 lightning strikes around the state. san jose cam showing you a very wet scene down in the south bay right now. wettest spots have received anywhere between half an inch to almost an inch of rain in penn grove. 0.53 in byron, allen rock 0.6 of an inch. look at the rain totals in the south pay. san jose 0.42 livermore along with mt. st. helena almost a third of an inch of rain. you'll see rain totals on the side of 0.0. >> you talk about all the changes, take a look at all of this. the storm is definitely hitting the sierra. caltrans sent out this picture of snow falling along highway 50 from twin bridges to echo summit. >> here's a look at the dark skies and showers in novato this

afternoon thanks to paul w. who shared this picture with us on twitter. >> now let's go to chris nguyen with the situation in san jose. chris? >> reporter: cheryl, good evening. it's sprinkling for now much to the relief of drivers, many who are just getting off of work right now. if you take a look, you can see just how wet the roads are. the gray skies are certainly a reality. as we take a look at some video, this was the scene not too long ago in downtown san jose. a very wet afternoon. we typically see more people walking the streets but that definitely wasn't the case earlier today. in terms of those we did see outside, some of them were smart enough to bring their jackets. others weren't as lucky as they got rained on without an umbrella to protect them from the elements. there's no question we need the rain because of the drought but today the weather really affected downtown businesses especially local restaurants and bars that are used to seeing a late lunch crowd. some are wondering what it will be like tonight. >> it's going to be bad for bar business. we're not going to have a lot of people here i'm sure tonight.

we'll show it on error error on abc7news.com. the body of 17-year-old max bush was found just before noon around jesse bethel high school. the shooting was not on campus but the victim was a student there. his parents say he was a good kid that would have turned 18 in july. >> this is the worst day in our life. >> it's a nightmare in the daytime you hope that you'll wake up from but you won't. >> never. >> max is a good kid. he got robbed of his life. >> robbed of his life. >> no details have been released about the suspect or a possible motive. both the high school and nearby elementary were locked down as a precaution as police searched for the shooter. livermore police have arrested a man they say opened fire on an officer early this morning. 25-year-old miguel alvarez was taken into custody this afternoon after a 12-hour search. just before 1:00 this morning officers were responding to a report of shots fired at chestnut and north l streets.

north i street, i should say. when officers approached alvarez, they say he fired on them several times. fortunately, nobody was hurt. san jose police have a 16-year-old in custody in connection with a brazen home burglary in the city's evergreen neighborhood. surveillance video caught two people armed with knives breaking into this house on friday. the family inside ran to the master bathroom and called police. a 17-year-old turned himself in yesterday. we are learning more tonight about that deadly amtrak crash in philadelphia. the death toll stands at eight now after another body was found in the wreckage today. one of those victims has ties to the bay area. abid gilani used to live in walnut creek and work for wells fargo. the engineer brandon bostian, who had previously been a contract engineer for caltrain, has just agreed to talk to the ntsb investigators. today the ntsb said video shows the train suddenly accelerated right before the derailment. >> mere seconds into the turn

we could see the train tilting approximately 10 degrees to the right and then the recording went blank. >> two of the most heavily damaged cars are still on the scene. they will be laser scanned for 3-d image so investigators have a more complete picture of exactly what happened. >> for more on abid gilani. >> let's go to lyanne melendez who's live in walnut creek tonight. >> you know, you do so many of these stories and quite often neighbors have really nice things to say but in this case abid gilani was so loved by his friends and former neighbors here in walnut creek he leaves behind a wife and two grown children and of course a community that admired him. abid gilani always called the bay area his home. he and his wife still owned this house in walnut creek hoping to come back some day. the family who now rents the home are here because the

gilanis helped them refugees from there kosovo, move to the u.s. >> we lived in this house since 2008. he was a really good person. not just for us for whole community. he was helping kids. >> when i'd see him out doing yard work or he'd go for a run, you know he was always good morning, how's it going. how are the kids? >> reporter: his kids attended northgate high in walnut creek. >> some of my friends called me yesterday. since then it has been shock. >> reporter: dalal has known the family for 15 years. she's a close friend. >> they did dinners every month in oakland for the homeless. richmond richmond, too many people. >> reporter: gilani worked in san francisco until 2008. he and his family then moved back east where he worked for the hotel giant marriott international and most recently wells fargo. he and his mother, who lives in toronto, had attended funeral

services for an uncle in virginia. gilani was returning home to his wife. >> he was a kind family man. and we have suffered a tremendous loss. >> this quiet community echos that sentiment. in walnut creek, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. a cruise ship that docked in san francisco got a complete scrubdown today after dozens of passengers got sick during a 14-day voyage. abc news was on the embarcadero as passengers disembarked. 135 passengers and 16 crew got sick with norovirus a few days into the cruise. the ship eliminated buffet eating to prevent further cup tam nation. the state senate passed legislation that mandates vaccinations for all schoolchildren. it removes a long-standing exemption that allows parents to opt out of immunizations.

that could face a tough fight in the assembly. laura anthony joins us from sacramento tonight with more. laura. >> reporter: hi, cheryl. well, it looked for a time a few weeks ago that this bill might stall in a senate committee, but today the full senate passed it. a win for sure for supporters, but total victory is still a ways off. >> this bill is essentially about answering the call of parents and i believe the silent majority who supports vaccines. >> reporter: supporters say it's about protecting a larger community from a potentially deadly disease, but opponents of sb-277 claim it's about much more than that and cuts into the very foundation of american society. >> it seems to me to be unconstitutional to deny a child the right to an education. >> reporter: the bill does support education for unvaccinated students, but they must use independent study or be home schooled. >> ayes 25 nos 10. that measure passes. >> reporter: it wasn't even close as the california senate

voted 25-ten to pass a controversial vaccine bill that now moves on to the state assembly. >> it will halt the continuing spread and rise growth in numbers of unvaccinated children and people in their communities. >> reporter: senate bill 277 would eliminate both the personal belief and religious vaccine exemptions for all california schoolchildren, as they have throughout the process, parents who opposed to sb-277 showed up in red and vowing not to give up the fight to keep the bill from becoming law. >> when they start taking away informed consent from a parent, i mean that's tyranny. >> reporter: sb-277 grew occupy a measles outbreak in california earlier this year. debate could begin in assembly committees this summer. in sacramento laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> all right, laura thanks very much. now, this vaccination bill gaines steam following a measles outbreak traced to disneyland back in december as you'll

a new report released today finds airbnb may contribute to san francisco's housing problems. carolyn tyler is live at city hall tonight to explain exactly how. carolyn? >> reporter: well, dan, a so-called airbnb law just went into effect in february, and already some supervisors want some tweaks. this report released today by the budget analyst may provide some ammunition. >> i treated it very well. i loved it. >> reporter: susan wessel said she was illegally evicted from her dolores park home and then found it advertised on airbnb. she's suing. her former landlord's attorney says if we end up in trial, we have confidence the jury will do its job. her flat was the setting for a news conference about a report released today by the city's

budget and legislative analyst. commissioned by supervisor david campos who says it confirms what he expected. >> you're talking about a 25% 23%, up to perhaps 40% of units that could be rented to residents of san francisco. >> reporter: the report makes a distinction between casual hosts, those who occasionally rent out a room to supplement their income, and commercial hosts who are in it as a money-making venture. in the popular hait ashberry neighborhood nearly 32% of the rentals were listed on airbnb, 122 total. in the mission 29% of potential rentals, or 199. evictions in those neighborhoods were also high. but the company says it's contributing to the city's economy as well to the tune of $469 million annually.

and a million a month in taxes. host says people should stop blaming airbnb for the housing shortage. >> we've had years and years of policies where affordable housing hasn't been piggybacked onto some of the market rate housing as it should have been. >> reporter: in san francisco, carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. governor brown unveiled a record $115 billion budget proposal. it's $7 billion bigger than the plan he released in january and that's thanks to surging revenues. there are several big winners. state schools oversee $68 billion. $3,000 per student more than four years ago. the plan would freeze instate undergraduate tuition at the university of california for two years and it would establish a new state tax credit for up to 2 million californians. the plan now goes before the state legislature. the labor unrest between the oakland unified school district and its teachers may be coming

to an end finally. the district announced today that it's reached a tentative agreement on a new contract with union leaders. there are no details so far. the district says some points are still being worked out. union officials say oakland teachers have only received a 3.25% wage increase since 200 throw. they had been asking for a 14% to 17% raise over the next three years. patriots quarterback tom brady is appealing his four-game suspension for his role in the nfl scandal over improperly inflated footballs. the appeal was filed this afternoon just ahead of today's deadline. the san mateo native is accused of using deflated footballs during the afc championship game. an nfl investigation found brady was at least generally aware of plans to prepare game balls to his liking below the league-mandated minimum. brady's appeal will be heard within ten days. a bay area landlord and his family don't feel safe in their own home because of the man who lives downstairs. >> if we were to come home and

devices and an app on your smartphone or tablet. randy shire uses her wi-fi connected baby monitor to keep an eye on her son when she's home and even when she's not. >> if i leave him with a baby-sitter, i like to know what's going on. >> reporter: the consumer reports says wi-fi monitors and other cameras are at risk for being hacked or viewed by strangers on the internet. recently consumer reports found a website that's dedicated to streaming cameras that aren't password protected. >> an unprotected camera is worse than no camera at all. you need to protect it with a password and that goes for any device out there that collects personal information about you. >> reporter: there are many connected devices that collect your personal information and send it over the internet. coffee makers and crock pots know your brewing and cooking habits. activity trackers know how much your move and could even know your location using gps. and smart thermostats know when you're home and when you're not.

some of this may not see troubling, but a burglar armed with that information could know when you leave the house. while there's no evidence criminals are using this kind of data yet consumer reports says you can reduce the amount of your information that's collected. >> if you don't plan on using the connected features on a product, buy the nonconnected version or just don't set it up on your wi-fi network. remember, if it's not hooked up to a network, it's not sending your information out to the internet. >> reporter: consumer reports says you should turn off connected devices when you're not using them because if they're not live, then you're not sending your data to the internet. >> good to know. michael, thank you. >> thanks, michael. let's talk about this weird mid-may weather. we need every drop of this rain. >> we had to bring sandhya inside. it's just too messy out there. >> that's right, we have to track this storm. this spring storm a pretty good one here in the bay area. believe it or not some spots like san francisco average about 0.7 of an inch around this time of year.

not exactly our wettest month but take a look at live doppler 7 hd. it has been a very wet day for some parts of the bay area. radar is still tracking some moisture as you take a look on the peninsula here. down to street level east palo alto, university avenue we're getting light to moderate returns. on the peninsula and out towards the east bay as well from newark, thornton avenue, fremont, fremont boulevard seeing moderate returns as well. lighter showers down in the south bay around san jose and up to the north watching some spotty showers developing around the napa area. in the sierra nevada, we have been seeing snow but it hasn't been at lake level, it's been really high snow levels. as you can see here just a few light returns. watching this lake tahoe cam and just a short time ago watching raindrops mixing in with snowflakes, you can see maybe a few flakes, but this is up above 8,000 feet. look how brown it is. i mean it's just really depressing there. temperatures 60 degrees in san francisco right now mid-60s

around oakland, 50s for san jose morgan hill. here's a live picture from our mt. tam cam starting to see some blue skies showing up here. 64 in santa rosa low 60s petaluma, napa, 56 in livermore. a lovely view from our 'em rowville camera. not everyone has been seeing the rain. showers taper off overnight tonight. partly cloudy and dry weekend and a milder pattern for next week. but it's not going to be a major warm-up. here's the trough that has produced all those thunderstorms we've been seeing along with downpours. now, this main area of low pressure, this cold front next wave actually will head towards southern california. so where we left, all right, a few showers 7:00 tonight maybe when you're making dinner but not a lot. the activity dies down 10:00 p.m. east bay and maybe an isolated shower for the start of your morning commute down around fremont or out around fremont and that's about it. southern california flash flood watches and flood advisories are

going down around san diego county where they're going to continue to see some very wet weather in that area. so if you're traveling there keep that in mind. a couple more inches of snow expected. winter storm warning remains up until 5:00 tomorrow night. make sure you have chains if you're heading up there. could see anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of snow. tomorrow morning mid-40s to the low 50s and i think for most of you you can leave the umbrellas behind. tomorrow afternoon you will need the shades. temperatures in the upper 50s to the upper 60s for most of you. cloud cover lingers along the coast and around parts of the bay as well. can't rule out an isolated shower around clear lake. a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast will feature a comfortable weekend bay and inland. cool at the coast mid-50s to the low 70s. temperatures will come up slowly between tuesday and thursday. it's going to be a little bit milder up into the mid-70s range wednesday, thursday bringing us closer to average for this time of year, so we'll finally break out of the cooler than normal conditions.

california attorney general kamala harris has some competition in the 2016 senate race. loretta sanchez announced today she is also running for barbara boxer's seat. sanchez is serving her tenth term as state congresswoman representing orange county. boxer is retiring. the mexican museum is closer to building a new home in san francisco, but it's also expanding to the east bay. abc 7 news was in oakland's fruitvale neighborhood when they
