thousands of runners are getting ready to run one of the most iconic races in the world the bay to breakers. originally called the cross-city race. it's a tradition that's more than asen is try old. cornell bernard joins us live from the starting gates. good morning. >> here we go. let the games begin. two hours away from the bay to breakers. barricades are up. the starting line and ready and

the runners, well a lot of them are not here yesterday. but they are slowly trickling in. about 50,000 runners, to be exact, making the iconic 7-mile trek. it's a one-of-a-kind race, quirky fun, crazy perhaps. lots of costumes. some people opting for no costumes, at all. no clothes, in fact. police say have fun but leave the alcohol at home. police will be cracking down on booze. if you are spotted drinking on the course, that alcohol will be taken away from you. extra security is on hand as well. they want to make sure the race is safe and fun. this year extra porta-potties will be on hand. 1100, to be exact. and extra trash picker uppers will be on hand because so much trash is left behind.

as we said about two hours before the race begins. we've seen a few brave runners trickling in but in about an hour the entire area will be completely packed. it's a one-of-a-kind race. advice to newbies have fun and keep an open mind. abc7 news. >> you know there's no alcohol allowed and no nudity allowed but there is lots of alcohol and lots of nudity. race begins at 8:00. developing news now from the midwest. a large portion of oklahoma is under a tornado watch with more strong storms expected later today. last night tornadoes touched down near three towns in an isolated area of southwest oklahoma. homes and businesses were damaged. a dashboard camera shows large hail coming down big enough to crack this car's windshield. severe weather has also been reported in texas kansas, nebraska and minnesota. so far no reports of injuries. a bank robbery suspect who led police on a chase electric antioch to oakland is in custody this morning. the suspect abandoned his car last night near the intersection and took off on foot. officers blocked off the neighborhood evacuated some homes. the suspect was taken into custody shortly after 11:00.

no word yet on the specifics of the robbery. u.s. senate candidate laura sanchez is under fire after she made what native americans and other critics consider a derogatory gesture. david has the details. >> it happened during a gathering of the indian american caucus at the democratic state convention. u.s. senate candidate loretta sanchez telling how recently she got an invitation from someone within the indian american community. >> i'm going his office thinking that i'm going to go with -- noises right? because he's native american. >> and several people in the room called the gesture insensitive to native americans. >> i was shocked and appalled she would make disparaging comments about native americans that way. very undemocratic. >> a short time later her opponent, camilla harris was

court and harriet avenue yesterday. police say girls was walking her dog when the guy pulled up asking for directions. the girl told place he got out of the car and grabbed her in a bear hug. she fought back and the man drove away. a scary situation pour some shoppers in concord. police are investigating a shootingter sun valley mall parking lot. they found several cars riddled with bullet holes yesterday. investigators found shell casings during the mall of the j.c. penney store. they are reviewing surveillance video and are looking for a tan colored four door he dan. no one was injured. >> now to the severe case of animal abuse we first reported friday on abc7 news. animal care said the reward to find atopieser increased from $5,000 to $10,000. he was found tied up thursday

morning in san francisco at division and south vanness avenue with burns and damage to his internal organs. if you want to help with maxamillion's care we have donation information on our website abc7 news.com. a man is now asking for -- let's go back to the other story about palo alto police reviewing from radar signals. they are trying to find a missing flight instructor who is accused of stealing a plane. police say william mcadams swiped the plane from advantage aviation, a flight school where he worked. the plane left the airport early friday morning. the faa last tracked it over the pacific ocean off watsonville going south toward the mexican border. why he took it remains a mystery. >> we have no idea exactly what happened and what his motif might have been. at one point he had access to the plane. on this particular occasion he did not.

the lives of almost 18,000 babies and mothers there could be at risk the next month because most of the healthcare facilities in the area hit by two powerful earthquake were badly damaged. unicef has launched an appeal for $50 million for the next three months to address the healthcare shortages. and there are several fundraisers for nepal being held today across the bay area. one in berkeley.

all proceeds from the event will go to earthquake relief and recovery. and in roenick park a concert will be held. that's at the sonoma mountain event center. that money raised, along with that from a silent art auction will go to the nepal earthquake relief fund. a popular sports apparel company is apologizing for selling a shirt that equates playing basketball to fighting in a world war. the shirt reply indicates that iconic military photo taken in iwo jima. it's angered veterans and not veterans alike. janet has the story. >> the shirt is causing quite the controversy. the image is similar to the historic 1945 photo showing marines lifting up the american flag on iwo jima except it shows men hoisting a ball to a basketball backboard and hoop. hundreds expressed their outrage

photo. no one knew how big the picture would become. he said he's proud to see the original photo be replicated in a positive light. abc7 news. hundreds of catholics are standing behind a controversial religious leader. they held a rally and picnic yesterday for the archbishop. a recent full page newspaper ad called for his removal after he proposed changes to school handbooks and teacher contracts in catholic schools. one man and his friends got up at 2:00 yesterday morning to drive in from southern california to support the archbishop. >> families under attack. you know, children in the womb are under attack. so we have to show support in every way we can.

or rooms at a site that looks like you are at the real booking site. >> this is exactly what happened to joe. >> they will use the logo, they will use pictures and maps. >> he tried to dispute the hotel charges through his credit card company, but they wouldn't go for that. so he called "7 on your side" and we contacted the reservation center. immediately joe heard from the company. they offered an apology and a refund. >> 99% of the time booking online is fine. but we really want to make consumers aware they should be on the lookout for these scams. >> i'm michael finney, "7 on your side". >> a pool of lava on the volcano in hawaii is sinking dramatically and this morning scientists fear a new eruption is imminent. there was a recent explosion that had fallen nearly 500 feet. lava has to go somewhere and the drop, combined with the rash of earthquakes, as many as 25 per hour, could mean a new lava eruption through the surface of

the mountain. meters are also showing the ground is shifting on the mountain slope. racers trying to qualify for this year's indy 500 will get a one-and-done shot this morning after yesterday's qualifying was washed out. two drivers managed to finish qualifying runs before the skies opened, but those times won't count. 34 cars are trying to make the 33-car field. and they will be trying to qualify today. the forecast calls for 500% -- for a 50% chance of rain. the indianapolis 500 will be held next saturday. you can see it right here. it's on abc7. so what do you think, frances, in terms of the rain? >> did you get a see there's a chance of thunderstorms again today but they might get a break in the middle of day so they can get the qualifying rounds down.

depends on the timing. >> we will take their rain. >> we have 100% chance of cloudy, gray skies right now. it's the gray out there. a lot of low moisture, low level cloud moisture in areas of green but no rain for us unfortunately . there is severe whether or not in the midwest. it went through tornado alley but it will continue to move east. this will bring the chance of rain and thunderstorms to indianapolis today as well and it will continue into tomorrow. from mt. tam a beautiful view. a peek of the sunrise for most of us underneath the clouds right now. san francisco 53. oakland 55. as well as san carlos and san jose. and half moon bay a little cooler at 52 degrees. here's the beautiful shot of lake tahoe. you see the cumulus clouds out there. another chance of rain and snow showers in tahoe today and tomorrow. snow at the higher elevations.

and rain showers likely this afternoon. so for us today in the bay area it's going to be mostly cloudy today. a little more cloud cover and i will show you why. staying cooler than normal and really not warmer until next weekend. a pattern that stays in place at least until thursday. we have two areas of low pressure and the trough will bring us the continued cool and breezy pattern. that's why temperatures will stay below average about 5 to 10 degrees. an area of high pressure will move over the pacific, eventually bringing us the warmer weather and more sunshine next weekend. cloud cover 7:00 this morning. widespread low clouds throughout the bay area and by this afternoon peeks of sunshine with passing high clouds but they will stay around the coast all day. so today look for a high of 67 once again in san jose and in mill peseta's 675.

tahoe, truckee has limited visibilities. visibility is less than a fourth of a mile. we could see some snow showers in the higher elevations today and tomorrow but i want to show you the live shot again. it's so pretty from mt. tam. you can see the high clouds and the low clouds. the sunshine breaking through some of the clouds right now. temperatures in the 50s for almost everybody. san francisco 553. oakland and san carlos at 55. san carlos will warm up into the low to mid-60s this afternoon for the hometown days event. that should be fun. here's the cloud cover over most of the area with the live shot. the san mateo bridge and santa rosa the cool is spot at 49. napa 50 degrees. mid-50s concord and liver more. a beach day possible but it will be on the cool side. 50 in santa cruz. it will get into the mid-60s later. mostly cloudy throughout the day. temperatures unfortunately are

going to stay cooler air than normal the next five days. warmer finally by next weekend. i'll tell you why. we have a couple areas of low pressure and we have the increasing clouds,s breezy pattern, as well. it will keep temperatures below normal throughout the week. high pressure will build over the pacific and so that starts to influence us by about friday and saturday where we will finally be closer to normal and see more sunshine. today the forecast model shows a lot of cloud cover. you saw the area of low pressure. we will see high clouds and clouds at the coast and peeks of sunshine by this afternoon. highs today very similar to yesterday's numbers. maybe even a degree or two cooler in some areas. so we will have a tough time hitting 70 inland. 70 fair field and antioch. look for upper 60s as well. concord hitting 68. the game in oakland 1:05 this afternoon. it will be around 62 degrees. and san jose still below average at 67 degrees. san francisco cloudy and cool at
