beneath your feet. if there is an earthquake, i would want to be here. >> inside san francisco's new subway tunnel in 20 years. you're looking at what will eventually extend the mta's t-line by 1.8 miles and hopefully easing traffic above and a walkthrough by san francisco mayor. >> we are well on our way to opening this city up in 2019 and really having a solution a concrete solution to the congestion that we already see in the city. >> reporter: the concrete down here is the most fascinating. it's roughly 11 inches thick and 18 feet in diameter on the inside, not one piece, but 1,750 rings as they call them with five sections east. this is the northbound channel dugout by a massive machine they named nick alma. >> this was from a fan formation

track down a stolen car suspect that led them on a wild chase. >> the chase route led officers the wrong way on two freeways for more than 30 miles starting around 11:30 and down i-80 finally ending in berkeley. >> the pursuit came to a violent end when the man slammed the stolen honda accord into an suv at california and hurst. the suspect demanded that police stop following him. >> called 911 and made a few statements to our dispatch and we relayed that he wasn't going back to jail. >> the man got out of the car and ran. the driver of the suv was taken to the hospital. chp and police scoured the area looking in backyards and inside cars, but found no trace of the man. a packed flight headed for hawaii from los angeles had to make an emergency landing this afternoon. the pilot turned the flight around when the cockpit gauge lit up indicating a potential problem. after burning fuel around the central coast the hawaiian

airlines plane landed without incident as you see here at lax. a maintenance crew is trying to fix the problem. residents in san francisco's neighborhood said package theft is a major problem. take a look at this home surveillance video a viewer sent us. she's had multiple packages stolen from her home and in the recent months, the thief came and then left and came back. she's hoping the video will help neighbors or authorities catch the thief in the act. >> a planned vote to plant plastic microbeads found in soaps, toothpaste and other personal care products will now take place thursday in sacramento. >> the beads are so small they aren't trapped on filters and can often end up in the ocean. >> the beads attract environmental tox ins and are eaten by fish and other animals that mistake them for food. the proposal would give manufacturers until 2020 to

comply. time to turn our attention to the weather this monday. it is a little chilly out there and spencer christian is here with the accuweather update. >> it has been chilly and it'smore like new year's eve weather than memorial day weekend. >> we have mainly gray skies right now and it's breezy and cool out there and we've got a little bit of shower activity to our north and if you will excuse me, our maps are not moving. all right. there they go. a little bit of shower activity well up north and there was a thunderstorm there between hopland and cloverdale. it's weakened now and just an area of light showers. meanwhile, over in the range east of mount hamilton has fizzling area of showers beginning to slide out toward the central valley there and in the sierra, some scattered shower activity and the snow in the highest elevation at 8000 feet and back to the bay area we go. this is a live view of lake

tahoe where we still see lingering clouds and lots of blue over the lake. here in san francisco, 59 and 62, san jose and morgan hill and 55 at half moon bay. here's another view locally from the east bay in emoriville with the western sky. it is currently about 69 degrees at santa rosa and 64 in napa and novato 69. 69 concord and livermore, 63 and i'll give you the first forecast as we look at skies over sfo. we'll see mostly cloudy skies, the temperatures ranging from low 50s to upper 50s. cool and cloudy tomorrow morning and gray and overcast tomorrow with highs not getting above 70 degrees. i'll show you when we can expect a break in the weather later. dan and ama? >> thank you very much. >> campbell police show the suspect in an attempted abduction of a young girl. >> the actual attack does not appear in the videos and abc 7 news reporter david louie is live in campbell where dozens of

tips have come in as a result of that video. david? >> ama and dan, the girl was walking her dog along harriet avenue here on saturday morning when a man spotted her as he was driving by. normally people don't pay much attention because this street is often used as a short cut but the man was taking advantage of the fact no one was out to witness everything. >> the new video shows that the suspect spotted the girl and was waiting for the perfect moment to jump out of the car. >> it looks like he drove down the street saw the victim walking her dog, made the u-turn and then waited for her to come back across the street. >> police say the suspect waited a minute before he came out and put her in a bear hug. a neighbor heard a scream and thought it came from the children playing next door. no one witnessed the attack which no camera captured. >> there was nobody out when it happened. normally there are people out doing yardwork and bicycling and

walking their dogs and there was just nobody out. >> the suspect is described as an asian or latino man in his mid-30s about 5'7", medium build and he was wearing a long, tan or brown coat. the honda accord, beige or gray. the attempted abduction is the main topic on next door, the neighborhood's social media network. neighbors give the pre-teen high praise for how she handled the assault. >> i think she's awesome. she's very brave to come forward, to do that and hopefully her description will be the thing that catches this individual. >> she acted absolutely appropriately, very brave in doing what she should do in alerting her parents in the neighborhood. >> the case is the highest priority at campbell police. they're going through dozens of tips from the public hoping to get the suspect under arrest. >> in campbell, david louie abc 7 news. the search is on in walnut

creek after a man attacked her on a hiking trail. sky 7 hd from above. a man grabbed her yesterday morning and it happened on iron horse trail near creekside drive and there you see it on the match and the girl fought the man off and he ran away when a bicyclist passed by. a biker fight turned into murder in texas. >> nine people died when rival motorcycle gangs opened fire on each other yesterday. >> as abc news reporter, police in waco called the violence unprecedented and are worried that the threat may not be over. >> reporter: at least 170 biker gang members are under arrest in waco texas, after a brawl left nine bikers dead and a community shaken. >> we have wounded inside. we have people stabbed. we have people shot and we have people beat. >> really really scary. we didn't know somebody was going to come back. it was scary. >> reporter: police say for the last two months they've had trouble with a biker gang at

covering daley city dublin, los gatos and the bay area this is abc 7 news. >> new details this afternoon in the death of extreme sports legend dean potter and a fellow b.a.s.e. jumper at yosemite national park. "the los angeles times" reports 43-year-old potter and 49-year-old graham hunt were trying to clear a notch of the mountain and slammed right into the rock instead. officials describe the notch as a steep and rocky ridge line. the two were killed after jumping from a 7500-foot cliff and their parachutes never deployed. potter opened up about his death-defying stunts during an interview with abc news in 2012. >> do you think about death? do you think about your mortality? >> forced to think about my mortality. i don't want do diane old, old man. i absolutely don't want to die falling. >> sadly, that's what happened. b.a.s.e. jumping is illegal at yosemite. potter leaves behind his

girlfriend and his dog whisper on who often joined him on jumps. the cause of a deadly u.s. military plane crash is under investigation this afternoon. the marine helicopter crash landed yesterday during training exercises in hawaii. one marine died. the other 21 others aboard suffered injuries ranging from critical to minor. it was based at camp pendleton and was in hawaii training. stay tuned. an in-depth look into the tragic crash is coming up on "world news tonight" at 5:30. law enforcement officials are questioning, he took control of the system by hacking the in-flight control system. chris roberts said he infiltrated the flight systems 15 to 20 times and manipulated one of the train's employngines. there's no credible information to access that it can be accessed from the in-flight entertainment systems, but they are more vulnerable.

innovation in san jose with the country's highest honor for museums. the museum and library services awarded it the national medal. it celebrates museums and libraries that promote extraordinary services to public institutions. the golden state warriors were back at practice today with a new traffic at hand taking on the houston rockets and the western conference finals. the series may be decided at the three-point line and that's because the rockets, like the warriors are taking threes. all eyes will be on steph curry but today the warriors guard says he is staying focused by staying off social media and deleted twitter. >> i needed to delete it entirely to resist the urge to press the buttons and start scrolling. there's so much tension and focus it, and you could clutter your mind. >> oddsmakers in vegas are

accuweather forecast. >> it is pretty chilly and most of the day was gray and overcast and now the sun is working through a bit and let's hope we get more sunny breaks. >> and here is live doppler 7 hd and you can see clouds around and the breaks of sun and much cooler than average and we've had showers and thunderstorms and it rumbled earlier up north and just south of poplin and west of cloverdale and produced some lightning strikes and produced grape-sized hail stones and it is weakening and just fizzling out. winds are picking up and we have gusts of 31 miles per hour and 35 at sfo and 22 at livermore and 21-mile-per-hour gusts at santaa rosa. and little breaks and the forecast features spotty drizzle and it's possible overnight and look for overcast and cool conditions generally the next few days and sunny and milder this weekend. the water vapor satellite shows a cold, upper level low moving right over the central part of

you live. we're getting a first look at construction progress in the san francisco subway tunnel. wayne freedman walked most of the 1.7 miles of what is an architectural wonder taking place of so much of chinatown and it is set to open in 2019. authorities are looking for a man who drove the wrong way for more than 30 miles on two highways this morning before crashing a stolen car and then taking off on foot. at 5:00 p.m., vic lee will have the latest on the ongoing search after this mess. >> shelling out more for your favorite sodas. >> and berkeley is the first city in the u.s. to charge an extra penny per ounce of soda. >> caroline tyler shares how much the city has collected so far and that's coming up at 5:00 p.m. president obama announced a plan to limit military-style equipment for police departments. several across the bay area had already returned armored vehicles. abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez is live where the

vehicles are an important law enforcement tool lyanne? >> reporter: dan, this all started right after 9/11. the federal government uponed to empower police departments so they could better protect their communities and certainly police departments across the nation had taken advantage of this basically, free money. that's about to change. >> this is south san francisco's armored personnel carrier. on january 1st of this year, police used it to search for a suspect who had fired earlier at officers. >> it had drastically increased the safety to the operators as well as the citizens. >> notice that he refers to police officers as operators, the same term used by the u.s. military. today president obama said officers should take on the role of guardian not warriors. the president is mandating that some equipment be prohibited and others restricted like real armored vehicles, pier rotech nicks and battering rams and

riot gear. >> we've seen how militarized gear can sometimes give people a feeling like there's an occupying force as opposed to a force that's part of the community that's protecting them and serving them. >> reporter: south san francisco police justified its use of military-style equipment like this one. it's all about safety and would you rather see a vehicle like this driving down the street or would you be on the news dealing with an officer or citizen who has been critically wounded? >> reporter: since 9/11 police departments have beefed up their military-style equipment through a grant program offered by homeland security, but cities like san jose and berkeley have said no to any armored vehicles. >> we can't see our own people as foreign enemy combatants, but after much debate the city of san leandro, and it will be a place early next year. >> san leandro lyanne melendez

abc 7 news. abc 7 news has learned the cause of a grass fire that burned 75 acres along interstate 580 near livermore. cal fire says a car most likely sparked that fire, it caught fire just after 2:00 yesterday afternoon. you can see from sky 7 hd how close those flames crept toward traffic. the fire backed up traffic for miles and it took about two hours to get those flames under control. full amtrak service is now up and running again along the eastern corridor and that's the first time commuters have been able to take the train since last week's deadly derailment in philadelphia. jim dolan from our sister station wabc with the first train from philly to new york this morning. >> the first time in a week passengers lined up to head to philadelphia by rail this morning. the 553 northeast regional headed for new york. >> i'm just happy to get on a train that will take me directly to new york. >> it was last tuesday that a

new york-bound amtrak train traveling at more than twice the legal speed limit jumped the rails as it hit a dangerous curve in the tracks in philadelphia. eight people killed and more than 200 injured in the worst american rail accident in a generation. the traffic along the busy northeast corridor ground to a halt. >> amtrak 110 pulled into the 30th street station and it was equipped with a system that will prevent it from speeding through the dangerous section of track where 188 derailed. >> what that will do is basically provide an assurance that the train will come to a stop if there was a violation of speed in the area. >> that system has been in place for years on every amtrak train. amtrak never felt the need to activate the system in that area until eight people died in a train crash. >> it was a matter of activating the technology and making the necessary modifications. they never felt it necessary before to do that. >> the assessment they made at

school keep the smartphones out of class. researchers at the london school of economics looked at how home policies in england have changed since 2001 and compared that data with results of achievement tests taken at the age of 16. the study of 130,000 students found that following a ban on phone use the school's test scores improved more than 6%. underachieving students showed even greater improvement and test scores in that group rose 14%. in health news another study shows working irregular hours can be bad for your health. target is making a new move for healthier food and jane king has those stories and more in today's wellness report. >> several food companies like campbell's soup and kelloggs are finding out their brands are not so special anymore at least at target. they won't put in as much money and effort into promoting their products as they did in the past. shelf space could also be trend.

the ticks make a u-turn at the line. a repellent fails and two ticks cross over into the treated area. consumer reports tested 15 different spray-on formulas some containing the active ingredient deet. deet is an effective repellent, but it can sometimes come with serious side effects like rashes, disorientation and even seesh urs. experts say you should avoid products with more than 30% deet. >> reporter: but can you avoid deet altogether and still ward off bugs? consumer reports tests several non-deet alternatives and these contain oils like citronella, lemongrass and rosemary. >> we found the natural or herbal repellents were not effective at all, but we did find non-deet products that really work. >> one of the best? repellent with eucalyptus. the fisherman's formula contains 20% pakerr tin similar to a

francisco was about to start a new crackdown on drivers breaking traffic rules. everything from blocking the box to double parking. today that program officially got under way and abc 7 news reporter matt keller has more on what you should be on the lookout for the next time you drive in the city. >> driving through san francisco can seem like a maze. cars trucks and even city vehicles are double parked, making your commute longer and more dangerous. >> that's why the san francisco, metropolitan transportation agency can launch, focusing on construction projects and double parking and delivery trucks and cars blocking intersection. the message is to follow the rules and this is part of the education to ensure that people are following those rules and we want to move it as efficiently as possible. five extra parking enforce chlt officers will be deployed to a targeted corridor each weekday during the morning and evening rush hours and the goal is to not just help drivers and p/eed

away, thank goodness. david louie is live in campbell where this happened. david? >> dan and cheryl, campbell police have given this case their highest priority and they received dozens of tips as a result of releasing the sketch of the suspect as well as a video showing the suspect's vehicle. this is normally a safe and quiet neighborhood, but tonight, understandably, the residents are a bit on edge. this is a neighborhood where you see kids' bikes by the front door and their palm prints embedded in concrete driveways. on saturday morning a man drove by a young girl walking her dog on harriet haef with no one else around to witness what he was about to do next. new video show a man in a beige or silver, 1998 to 2002 honda accord sedan stalking the girl. the car first makes a u-turn and they wait for the girl to catch up to his position and cross the street. that's when he jumps out asking for directions and gives the girl a bear hug.

she screamed and got away. the little girl gave a descriptive sketch. and so we all look at that online and we're looking for him so i think he'll be found soon. >> here is that sketch. an asian or latino man in his 30s wearing a black and white beanie and a coat with fur on the rolled-up cuffs. >> so we get a lot of traffic back and forth at search times of the day and people use it as a short cut to get out of other places and it's quite unusual to see completely strange cars come through. >> campbell police say dozens of tips come in from the video and sketch. >> every phone call we get and every piece of information is important and at this point that's what we're dedicated to doing is following up on every piece of information and identifying the suspect responsible. >> for now police believe this is an isolated case. no similar dayses have been reported in the area. the girl is said to be traumatized, however, she was not injured. in campbell david louie, abc
