thank you for joining us. tonight new details about what sparked that deadly texas showdown between five outlaw motorcycle gangs. it was supposed to be a routine meet up. soon a fist fight turned in to a full-blown gun battle. we welcome phillip mena to "nightline" with this report. it was a weekend lunch turned shootout. littering a parking lot with bodies. >> i got a call from they thought they heard a gunshot and saw people running. >> hundreds of bikers from five rival gangs including the bandidos and the scimitar a braille breaks out from the restroom to the parking lot. bikers using brass knuckles, knives chains and guns. >> this is the most violent, gruesome scene i have dealt

with. >> reporter: leaving nine dead and 18 injured. just feet away from families having lunch. a scene seemingly ripped straight out the viet crime drama "sons of anarchy." >> it was really scary. we didn't know if somebody was going to come back. they said some had guns. >> diners locked themselves in the freezer to escape the unfolding violence. >> i crawled back toward the freezers with a lot of waitresses and some other people there. >> we had wounded inside. we had people stabbed, we had people shot and beat. >> police say they were gathering for a biker night at twin peaks a chain known for good-looking waitresses. the restaurant advertising on facebook, ladies and gentlemen, start your engines. police expected trouble from the rivals and were already there when the violence erupted. >> i just heard gunshots just going off, probably over 20

gunshots at least. that's -- just saw people running around. >> reporter: parenting carried their children to safety. police lining the more than 100 bikers on the curb and loading them in to buses and squad cars. tonight 170 bikers are in custody charged in engaging in organized crime. police releasing more than 50 mug shots. >> last count, we have 170 individuals that we have arrested and are booking or have been booked in to the mclennan county jail. those individuals are charged with engaging in organized crime in reference to the shooting at twin peaks, which is a capital murder. >> reporter: the fbi has called it the group a serious national threat and they tell abc news they are on guard. >> are you worried about retaliation. >> certainly something we are aware of. >> reporter: police here not

mincing words saying the restaurant was warned not to host this gathering. they did it any way. tonight twin peaks corporate office now shutting down this location all together. one of the five biker gangs involved in the shootout the bandit o dos. they have a saying cut one we all bleechltd all bleed. their ruthlessness shown on the show gang land. edward was a member of the bandidos for six years. >> some of them are criminals and some criminal activity is not known to the members of the club. >> reporter: he has written ten books on biker cull chirtureculture. he said for bikers turf is everything. >> it goes back to the playground on first grade and two bullies on the playground and the playground wasn't big enough for both. >> the feud has been brewing for

years. fighting over the right to claim texas on their jacket. >> last year in 2014 the cossack put on the bottom rocker and they told the bandidos that wasn't happening. >> reporter: in 2013 a fight broke out in abilene, texas between the two groups. it ended in the stabbing of two victims. charles falco is a former atf contractor who spent years trying to take out these gangs. he requested we not show his face. >> i'd say half are full-time criminals where they are selling dope, drugs, involved many prostitution or illegal gambling any other types of crimes you can think of. for them they are outlaws. that's what they are. >> reporter: in the u.s., biker grouches are notorious for run ins with the law. in 2013 in new york a group of

bikers pulled a man out of his car and beat him after he hit another biker. the driver testified about that attack. many of these biker groups aren't gangs and consider themselves motorcycle enthusiasts that enjoy a good ride. >> now everyone across the nation thinks when there's a pack of bikes it's a bunch of hooligans looking to beat up women and rape children. it's not like that. >> reporter: "nightline" spent four days riding with bikers in charleston south carolina who were not affiliated with gangs. >> what do you say to people at home? a lot of people say aren't you putting people in danger. >> the guy on one wheel has more control of that motorcycle at whatever speed he is at than people text messages putting on lipstick and talking on phones. you are focused. >> reporter: this weekend, biker culture goes from dangerous to deadly i'm not surprised by how violent it got but how many lost
