good evening, we begin here tonight with the new developments in. the mysterious quadruple homicide in one of the rit siest neighborhoods in washington, d.c. blocks away from the vice president's home there's an active crime scene. we heard from the investigators today and for the first time about a man who has said to have pound pounded on the door hours before that mansion went up in flamgs here's abc's ryan smith. >> wood lapd drive, 3-story fire fire. we've removed four victims. >> a murder mystery is gripping the nation's capital tonight as authorities here investigate a suspicious fire torching this near ly nearly $3 million house in this upscale neighborhood just blocks from the home of the vice president. inside that mansion, a chilling discovery. four bodies the ceo of american

ironworks and his wife amy, a stay at home mom, and what authorities believe to be their 10-year-old son and their housekeeper. the family's surviving teen daughters were away at boarding school at the time. but this wasn't just any fire. >> we do know at this point that the fire appears to be intentionally set. >> reporter: police confirming there's more to the story. >> there were injuries discovered that appear to be blunt force or sharp object injuries. >> reporter: the car was found on fire 15 mile was. police releasing this surveillance video of a person of interest running in that same area area. >> i have been here for 25 years and nothing like this ever happens. >> right now everyone in the neighborhood is a little shaken up. they are not sure what to think. >> reporter: one of the first pieces of evidence authorities are examining is this voice mail. >> i hope you get this message. >> reporter: calling a family employee the night before the

blaze telling her not to come to the house. >> amy is in bed sick tonight and she was sick this afternoon and vera offered to stay and help her out so she's going to stay the night here. her phone died and i don't have a charger that fits her phone. so i don't know if you can tell anybody that would be worried about her that she's just going to be here with us tonight. >> reporter: thursday the morning of the fire the housekeeper receives a text message from amy telling her not to come to the house. >> they say i want to make sure you do not come today. i don't understand why. god saved my life. >> reporter:. also telling abc news that the husband then went to the home looking for his wife because he hadn't heard from her. banging on the front door, hearing noises coming from inside. then receiving a call saying his wife is staying the night.

hours later the mansion goes up in flames. at 5:00 p.m. the tragic confirmation, four dead three of the bodies showing signs of violent injury. the motive is still in question. >> i think you have two possibilities. the first one is some sort of revenge killing. the other is this is a home invasion that went south. that they wouldn't leave the house. it didn't work and they ended up brew brutally killing them and then setting the house on fire. >> reporter: further adding to the mystery, the family's porsche once parked outside their home now found smoldering here in this church parking lot several miles away. the police chief said this quadruple homicide has left neighbors really on edge. >> i certainly understand how tense and nerve wracking this is for the community. we try to keep our foot patrol out there. >> reporter: in an interview on

tuesday in washington, d.c. the chief of police hinting at the detective work going on out of camera view. >> there's certainly a huge element talking to people. but a large part of it is puzzle piece after puzzle piece. there's digital evidence that has to be recovered, lots of videos to be reviewed dna and other forensic evidence that has o to be gathered. >> there's a number of way to look at these cases. people who dealt with robbers, there are groups of people that do home invasions. they'll look at the phones of the husband, the wife, the home line, both housekeepers, they will look at their computers to see if they have had any traffic that would lead them to somebody else. as you pull all of that information, there will be little streams of information that come out. >> reporter: police were carrying items out of the house but they are keeping a tight lip

at a time when polls show organized religion is on the decline in america, tonight you'll meet one pastor going the extra mile to fill the pews. they call him the cowboy pastor. he delivers sermons on horse back rides a bull in the church and that's not the half of it. there's been a little bit o of controversy and so here's abc's david wright. >> the bible says we have an adversary called the devil. >> reporter: speak of the devil and his horns appear. real horns inside a real church. this is bone crusher. that's preacher lawrence bishop preparing to dig in his spurs.

a leap of faith riding this bull for jesus. >> i'm not going to try to preach from the bull's back. >> i did do a sermon off a horse with a head set microphone. but on a bull it could have to be an 8-second sermon. >> reporter: he and had his wife have two sons. bishop is the pastor of solid rock church in monroe ohio. the one with the 52-foot statue of jesus facing i-75 nicknamed hug-me jesus because of his pose. welcoming new believers is what the bull riding thing is all about. >> the bible said compel them to come in. so that's what we're doing. didn't say how to come them. i don't have very many talents other than riding things that bucks or playing music.

strong one of the most racially mixed churches you'll ever see. half the crowd is black. everyone is welcome. not everyone. the church is very outspoken on the issue of same-sex marriage. >> we love homosexuals. i had an uncle that was homosexual and died of aids but we do not agree with homosexuality because the bible is against it. we have to -- >> the bible is also against eating shellfish. >> you're talking about in the old law. >> i don't remember jesus talking about homosexuality? >> it's in romans and many times jesus mentioned marriage in the bible, it was always a man and a woman. >> reporter: the ministry constantly coming up with creative ways to connect. >> we're doing everything we can. >> reporter: the church operates a home for troubled women. the hope over heroin targets young people struggling with addiction.

everyone in the house is saying their prayers at this point. finally, battered and bruised, the cowboy preacher climbs back up to safety. and in a truly impressive example of grace under pressure even manages to give his sermon having just been stomped and gored. >> be baptized. >> reporter: when it comes time for the altar call, the response is huge. 300 or so new believers ready to be baptized. the pastor truly thankful. >> it was with the wild beasts. >> what happened at the altar and to the kingdom of god is worth it. >> reporter: an unconventional approach fought with danger but at the solid rock church it seems to be reaping results. i'm dade wright for "nightline"
