least 27 reports of tornadoes. 10 in oklahoma and 17 in texas. leaving behind miles of destruction. this morning, in mineral wells -- residents cleaning up after a reported tornado tore through town. >> debris flew up in the air. big black shingles and such. >> reporter: buildings taking major damage. including this church. >> it's scary. >> reporter: in austin, pieces of this hotel fly through the air. this tornado touching down 100 miles outside san antonio. >> we're just thankful it wasn't worse than what it is. >> reporter: texas not getting a break. torrential rains triggering disastrous flooding. now that we have residents here have their first opportunity to take a look at the damage and assess it. meanwhile. the police chief telling us despite the destruction no one was hurt. george. >> thank goodness.

now to ginger with the flooding danger. >> that's the danger this morning. flash flooding. it's happening already. places that have had 4 to 8 inches of rain from colorado to north texas and oklahoma. it's still happening this morning. the radar showing it moving into arkansas, southeast oklahoma. that's where we find the flash flood warnings. if you're in red, change your plans this morning. don't drive. you don't need to. it is going to be bad for a couple of hours. then it will sink to the southeast. more storms back to the west. the potential for more damaging wind, hail, and tornadoes. san angelo. we'll have much more coming up. now the cruise ship that ran aground more than 3500 people stuck off the coast of bermuda. matt gutman joins us with the latest. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. overnight, those passengers said they initially panicked as they felt that ship lurch when it plowed into the coral reef. this morning, dive teams are back out inspecting the ship. until they give it the green light, that boat is not going anywhere.

this morning, "the norwegian dawn" stopped. after striking ground two miles off the coast of bermuda. nearly 3500 people on board left high and dry. >> we felt the ship shudder for maybe about 10, 15 seconds. and then all of a sudden, there was an abrupt stop. you could tell the ship had stopped moving. >> reporter: the ship on a seven day cruise losing all power after leaving bermuda tuesday night, reportedly getting stuck on part of a coral reef. rachel thinking they might have to abandon ship. >> my family and i went to our cabins. got personal items, our cell phones and passports. >> reporter: the power restored. but the ship still stuck. smaller boats swarming the ship, inspecting it for damage. this tugboat tugging out to try to nudge the ship loose. six hours later with high tide coming in, this 1,000-foot-long city on the sea was dislodged and moved to a location nearby

where it anchored. the ship's steering system suffered a temporary malfunction, causing the ship to sail slightly off course, hitting the seabed. adding everyone on board was safe. the coast guard saying no fuel leaked. passengers on board concerned about what's going to happen if the ship can actually set sail. >> i don't want to continue on this ship into open seas. because the response time within two miles of shore was hours. the response time in open seas, i don't even want to think about. >> reporter: and that concern is understandable. there's 800 miles of open ocean between bermuda and boston. the good news this morning, the ship is back at port in bermuda. everybody is safe. >> thank you, matt. we turn to the largest consumer recall in u.s. history. nearly 34 million air bags recalled because they're prone to explode. sending shrapnel flying.

the defect is blamed for five deaths in the united states and more than 100 injuries. david kerley has the latest from washington. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is a doubling of this recall. millions of americans could be driving with air bags that could explode into shrapnel in an accident. it is a remarkable recall. 1 in 7 cars on the road needing its air bag replaced because of this. the recall a move that the japanese air bag maker takata has been fighting. >> up until now, takata has refused to acknowledge that their air bags are defective. that changes today. >> reporter: nearly 34 million cars from 11 carmakers. carrying an airbag inflater that could potentially explode with aggressive force. takata believes that moisture in high-humidity areas is getting into the canisters and changing the chemical compound, causing the stronger explosions. they can shatter the canister,

sending shrapnel into the bag and into the car. cory lost sight after his air bag exploded. >> i thought i was going to die. >> abc news has been following this recall from the start. >> can you tell us why you're not expanding the recall. >> this morning we're learning some alarming details about the bag inflaters already recalled. the company tested more than 30,000. and nearly 1 out of every 100 sent shrapnel flying when it was ignited. the government says it could take a couple of years to replace all the air bags recalled. it's not sure if the new inflaters used as part of the recall will be safe in the long run. it will test the replacements, too. >> there will be a test to ensure that the final remedy will be safe. period. >> reporter: takata, which for so long refused to acknowledge the scope of the problem, says it's pleased to reach the agreement with the u.s. government. u.s. authorities will be intimately involved in the

recall and whether those replacement bags will work in the long term. robin? >> thank you, david. now to the latest on a major oil spill. thousands of gallons flowing into the pacific from a broken pipeline spreading over four miles of coastline near santa barbara. abc is there with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a not so good morning for campers here. this is a popular state beach. but this is what they're seeing this morning on the rocks and on the sand. this thick, gooey, oil all over the place. as beach-goers prepares for the unofficial start for the summer season a scary scene. that is crude oil washing ashore near santa barbara tuesday. a nearby oil pipeline springing a leak sending 27,000 gallons of oil into the ocean. dying the sands and waters black. and putting animals at risk. this bird smothered in the muck.

whales into is area. beach-goers forced to evacuate. >> we thought we would stay and then we were told that by the state parks that we're going to have to take off. >> reporter: officials able to shut down the pipeline and stop the spill. >> the pipeline is secured. so no additional fuel is leaking from that pipeline. the responsible party has enacted their emergency response plan. >> reporter: the beach closed indefinitely as the race to clean up all that begins. for some residents it may be too little too late. >> it's a disaster. can't bring my kids here for six months maybe. a year. i don't know. >> reporter: high tide expected around mid day and expected to bring a lot of the oil back on to these rocks and on the sand. cleanup crews starting to get the work done. robin. >> thank you. >> to the race for the president now and hillary clinton taking

from inside the car. a mother scared for the life of her 2-year-old daughter in the backseat. >> they are attacking our car and we have a baby in our car. really scary. >> reporter: the wife testified in court yesterday that the bikers also tried to drag her out of the car but couldn't because she still had her seatbelt on. >> we have a baby, stop! oh, my god, stop! we have a baby this the car? >> she retreated to her child. the ordeal began when 30 bikers followed the family's suv. following a motorcycle rally. a traffic nightmare follows. lian caught inside. he bumps into one of the choppers. the bikers slash his tires. lian trying to make a break for it guns it running over one of the bikers. the pack chases him for three miles and then this. >> oh, my gosh! we have a baby in the car! >> fortunately mother and child were rescued by emergency rescue

personnel. on monday they told a judge he felt in complete fear for my life and my wife's and my daughter's and this is one of those cases where cell phone video so crucial in getting a basic understanding of what happened here and what likely will be pivotal in the outcome. >> thanks. we're turning now to a big break in the case of the brazen bank heist in london where thieves made off with $300 million with jewels and other valuables. police arrested nine people. in connection with the crime. the most shocking thing about the suspects is their age. abc has the story. >> reporter: this was a $300 million jewel heist from london's garden. it looks professional cutting through metal shutters and penetrating a concrete bunker wall. it is worthy of clooney and pitt. it seems this caper was less ocean's 11 and more like the expendables. that's because the average age of the nine men arrested is 60. the oldest a remarkable 76.

from dropping lifelines in rushing floodwaters to giving firefighters a critical view of massive wildfires, even locating lost hikers in the densest forests. >> you're going to hear a buzzing noise like a bunch of bees. >> i hear that. and it's back to my right. >> reporter: drones, now increasingly playing a vital role in the most dangerous situations, helping to save lives. >> they're the future of search and rescue. >> reporter: this past weekend, a drone enabling rescue teams to drop a rescue line to this stranded couple caught in a rising flash flood. >> you could see things with this technology that you can't see with the human eye from the ground. >> reporter: and now this summer, you could see drones flying to the rescue of beachgoers caught in rip currents and water emergencies. float-carrying drones are now being deployed in water rescue exercises, able to travel five times faster than michael phelps, they'll be able to reach swimmers in distress a fraction of the time.

while laws are still catching up, the faa tells abc news allowances for unmanned aircraft serving in rescue operations are in place. they may start offering over more and more shores across the country. the next wave is being tested right now in connecticut. project riptide hoping to use drones to drop life rings to swimmers. >> which, i think, will greatly increase survival rates for people. i definitely see drones being able to aid lifeguards in a way we never thought possible. >> reporter: we're going to show you how this works. we have a distressed swimmer and we're going to put this drone to the test again jack who is a seasoned life guard. whoever can read that distressed swimmer first wins. are you guys ready? is everybody ready to see this? all right. on your mark get set, go!

your life. >> it's incredible. you never think -- i never thought in a million years i would be capable of doing anything like that. this whole experience and being able to be partnered with val has shown me that anyone is capable of doing anything. you have to have the willingness to go out and try. >> third time's the charm for you. your first championship. >> fourth, actually. >> you and rumer seemed to have a connection from the beginning. what was the key for you to bring out the best in her, the confidence we saw? >> the first time i met her, there was such a -- there was this -- there was like this -- sense of gratitude in her eyes in everything that she did and everything that she said to me. and, you know, she was just so excited to do this show. i asked her the first meeting, i was like, are you sure? really? it's going to be tough. just how genuinely enthusiastic she was. she said, i want to learn how the dance and hopefully make a new friend. that's all i want.

ten weeks later, we got a trophy. it feels amazing. >> you guys are friends. everyone is friends here. it was wonderful to see family and friends that you have here and there. and rumer, your parents, they -- they have a special message for you. take a look. >> aw. >> you did it, kid. and i love you. you worked so hard. i'm so proud of you. and, i -- what else? what can we say? >> get back out there. >> you heard him. get back out there. >> oh, that's so cute. >> that's awesome. >> i think you surprised a lot of people, riker. really impressed len. called you fred astaire with a modern flair. how did you get the mix of the modern and classic? >> i think allison brought that to the table. the whole thing is, trying to be traditional and trying to come up with something new at the same time. allison was so brilliant at that. it kind of -- keeping it traditional and adding our flair. >> kudos to all the dancers, the pro dancers.

you do a terrific job each and every season. [ cheers and applause ] and allison, they wanted more intensity out of riker. how were you able to tap into that and make that happen? >> you know, obviously from week one, with riker, he had such a natural ability to dance. and he just understood the movement so well. the musicality. we adapted so well to the fun dances and energetic things. so to pull a deeper side of him at first was tough. because of the struggle of finding that inside of him, that's what was real on the dance floor. i think us trying to find that inside him shined on the dance floor. he did an amazing job with all of his dances. every single one of them were so different. dynamic. i'm so proud of his journey. it was incredible the entire season. >> and sharna, you pulled so much out of noah as well. we were all blown away by the final dance. so much emotion.

some of your signature lifts. we have a little montage of some of your lifts right here. >> yeah. >> yes! >> whoa, yeah! >> one big arm right there. >> there it is. >> so epic. >> it is. it is epic. it's just amazing to watch. and, then we want to know, what was the experience like for you? is this dancing thing something you're going to stick with? >> stick with? no, i'm done after this. dancing is not something i do. that's what -- i'm so impressed that i came this far because i thought three weeks at best. and, this is proof of how incredible sharna is as a dancer, a teacher, an artist that she took me, just with my injuries and with the fact that i have never danced before, and -- got us this far. i think it's amazing what she's accomplished. >> and tell us how you did that, sharna.

because it's wonderful each and every week. the back stories we saw. and the way you are able to -- man, you can dance, noah. >> he doesn't believe me yet. he really can. >> how did you do that? >> how did you do that? >> every week was a different challenge to find what that dance was for noah. and we had to discover it. sometimes it was more difficult than others. what was so difficult was he allowed me to tell his story through dance. there's nothing more truthful than that. people connected to seeing that and seeing him overcome his struggles every week. it was beautiful to be a part of. >> it was wonderful. everyone allowed their emotions to come out. and it really -- at home, i gotta tell you, with the popcorn, and wine, watching you all, it was so much fun. and you even shed a tear, my friend. it was the first time on camera we saw you shed a tear, val. >> this season. and it was the first time for a lot of things for me.

and i, like i said, i feel like she made me feel comfortable enough to be able to open up and be myself and not be so guarded. and i have to thank her for it. she's a beautiful person. yeah, it's cool. >> and you really opened up as well, rumer. you talked about how you had felt awkward and gotten bullied online for your looks. this really changed the way you see yourself, or did it? i should ask, i shouldn't say. >> i mean, i think one of the most incredible things about this whole show and being on this show is the incredible response that i got from people about sharing my story. and that's who this mirrorball is for. honestly. is for everyone who ever felt like they weren't good enough or felt like they couldn't accomplish something. you can. even if you don't feel like you're beautiful every day or you feel like you look bad, you can do something. you work hard, put your whole heart into it, you totally can. >> you did that. we saw that with each week to see the growth. >> we have breaking news here.
