broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. good afternoon, everybody. i'm larry beil. >> i'm ama daetz. the former south bay youth camp employee accused of having child pornography appeared in court to enter a plea pf edgar covarrubias was arrested earlier this month after finding child porn images on his computer. david louie joins us with the story. ama and larry. >> edgar covarrubias entered a plea and that was postponed because they found new evidence that has led to new charges and higher bail. >> edgar covarrubias padilla was facing child pornography and molestation charges when he

appeared in court. prosecutors added additional charges of manufacturing child porn. >> you have distributing or sending and manufacturing is making and that's what the focus of those two counts. he was a camp supervisor at walden west, an environmental educational center and there he came in contact with 15,000 children a year. he was arrested two weeks ago. detectives found 600 disturbing images on his computer and phone and that immediately alarmed parents whose kid his attended the camp. >> he may have taken pictures of our kids and he was going in the cabin to wake up our kids in the morning. >> detectives are now going through the photos and videos to try to determine where they were taken and why any of the children could be identified. the county office of education has put what it knows on a special website but a request for an on-camera interview was declined. it has hired a private investigator to develop new procedures to prevent this from happening again.

>> covarrubias has undergone a background check when hired. the additional charges caused the court to raise bail to $200,000. in san jose david louie, abc 7 news. >> the family and friends of a camp counselor killed by a fallen tree in yosemite staged a day-long demonstration in san francisco today. the group wants someone held accountable for ans a s as a s as a annais kittenberg. >> annais was killed because in my view of willful negligence. >> what i want this community to do is to start asking questions. you can still love a place. you can still have great experiences at that place, but you have to ask the questions. you have to look at the evidence. >> the demonstration took place outside the camp's san francisco office. rittenberg's family wants camp leaders to admit fault and resign. they claim evidence revealed in

recently settled lawsuits shows that the camp ignored expert advice about the trees and the camp denied those claims saying the trees are routinely inspected by certified arborists and they have maintenance and removal and the tree did spontaneously fall. it is finally over for a south bay mother whose little girl was the subject of an amber alert. >> the 6-year-old was taken from her home overnight in san jossy and found 75 miles away in stockton. abc 7 news reporter matt keller with more on the happy reunion. the ending to this morning's amber alert was satisfying. >> we here at spd and stockton p.d. were very grateful and fortunate and able to reunite ava with her family since we did locate her here in stockton. >> 6-year-old ava bar-illan was found just before 6:00 this morning and she was even wearing her mini mouse t-shirt used in the amber alert description. >> i'm just very happy ava is

okay and i do want to thank everybody who was involved in getting her back safely. >> the search for ava started at 2:20 and her mom reported her ex-boyfriend, 39-year-old ex-boyfriend maurice cheadle took ava and drove off with his current girlfriend 35-year-old stockton resident dawn attkisson and this story is more complicated. the santa clara county sheriff's department says cheadle knows ava and still takes care of her from time to time and he went to drop her off at 2:20 this morning. the mother received a phone call from her new boyfriend which upset our suspect and the suspect told 6-year-old ava to go out to the car and she went out to the car and the male struck our female, her mother which is domestic violence. he and attkisson drove stockton to the home. during that time an amber alert went out.

ava was the alleged victim of a kidnapping, cheadle and attkisson were in the spotlight being looked for by law enforcement and citizens. stockton police found them in a house on tree swallow court and attkisson was outside and cheadle was inside with ava and surrendered peacefully. the suspect his no intention of hurting ava. the young girl is now headed home. >> i was very happy to see her. she looked like she was having fun here and that was good to see. yeah. yeah. she seems good. >> sheriff's deputies say attkisson and cheadle will be booked on attkisson and conspiracy charges while cheadle will be booked on an additional domestic violence charge. in san jose matt keller abc 7 news. >> santa clara deputies announced they decided not to arrest dawn attkisson and they are forwarding their investigation to prosecutors and they'll let them decide whether or not to charge her. >> a standoff in san francisco is now entering its 20th hour.

and abc 7 news was outside an apartment where police are waiting out a man. nearby streets have been closed and they arrived after 8:00 just last night. the suspect ran from the scene to his apartment and is refusing to come out and talk with police. a police negotiator is on scene. >> take a look at this car that burst into flames on a west macarthur onramp to westbound 580. it happened around 2:30 today. the driver told the oakland chp there was some m80 fireworks in the car. no word if the fireworks were responsible for starting the fire or if they helped keep fueling the flames. nobody was hurt and the ramp has since reopened. bart service is running on schedule after an equipment problem caused major delays. sky 7 hd was overhead as workers replaced the damaged track coil located between two oakland stations and bart shut down the richmond line in order to get crews to the area safely. passengers experienced delays as

long as an hour and it's part of the train control system and it appears something struck it. >> yet another problem has surfaced for the beleaguered bay bridge. one of the steel rods that ankers the eastern span's tower through the foundation has fractured. it failed a pull test. last fall crews discovered more than 400 of the rod his been immersed in rain water and experts believe they could crack when exposed to water. a bridge spokeswoman tells abc 7 news it's not clear yet what caused the rod to fracture but points out it's the only one of the rods in the foundation to fail testing. >> all right. it's time to turn to our weather which remains kind of gloomy. >> comfortably cool. >> that's an optimist. comfortably cool and this has been with us all week long and starts off overcast and cool and breezy. we get breaks of sun in the afternoon and that's what we have right now. here's live doppler 7 hd and we have more than breaks of sun and not here in the bay area, but we have thunderstorms to show you

a long line of them all through the sierra up to the northernmost part of the state and we're coming back around and into parts of mendocino county. we have a cell breaking out right now near yukaya and we had another one, as well. here in the bay area, here's a view of the western sky mainly the bank of clouds developing near the coast. it's 58 in san francisco and 59 in oakland and low to mid-60s in san carlos, morgan hill and 67 in half moon bay and a few clouds over the golden gate and we have current temperatures in santa rosa and napa and 63 in novato and mid-60s in concord and livermore and as we look at a few clouds over the bay and the first forecast we'll have cloudy, mostly cloudy and breezy conditions and a slight chance for showers tomorrow and there is a whole different pattern coming our way for the weekend and i'll show you that in just a few minutes. larry and ama?

>> thank you spencer. >> nfl commissioner roger goodel was in san francisco as team owners wrapped up two days of meetings. >> the future of the oakland raiders and they stay in oakland. abc news reporter carolyn tyler was in today's meeting. >> the nfl commissioner roger goodell said today there's no timetable for oakland to present a proposal to replace the aging odot coliseum but the raiders' owners says there is a june 21st deadline for a financing plan. it seems to be forced down for the city of oakland, scrambling to hang on to the raiders but nfl commissioner roger goodell says he has heard nothing from the city about a new stadium proposal. i don't know if it's a point of frustration, but it's certainly a point of information. >> if oakland's been silent, the city of carson outside l.a. is openly courting the raiders and

the chargers with the proposal to built a joint stadium. a deal to purchase the land has already been finalized. one key nfl executive has made trips to oakland over the years. >> each time i've gone there i've heard that the promise is right around the corner of a master development. the time has shrunk. no results have been produced and that to me is going backwards. >> owner mark davis says he wants to stay in oakland and mention the long dinner meeting last week that city council president lynette applehaim. she wants to legitimately work something out. new leadership is focused on a new plan to get to the finish line. >> we did inherit some of the frustration that the nfl rightly feels about some of the false starts that the city had, but i'm very optimistic, if not cautiously optimistic because i don't want to over promise that we now have a path forward. >> commissioner goodell and mark

>> after failing to cooperate in a screening area, tsa officers say the man ran away. officers caught up with him at gate 66 and then used a taser to take him into custody. he was not armed and went to the hospital for treatment for the tase tase taseing. the air bagmaker takata has finally acknowledged that the casing in the air bags can schadter and now 34 millionaire bags twice the initial number are being recalled. karen travers has the details. >> reporter: it's the largest recall in u.s. auto history. >> up until now takata has refused to acknowledge that theirary bag aryir bags are defective. that changes today. >> reporter: 34 millionaire bags recalled. double the official number, including ford gm and honda. japanese company takata believes that moisture and high-humidity

areas is getting into the canisters and causing a strong explosion. the inflator casing can shatter, sometimes sending shrapnel through the bag and into drivers and passengers. at least five americans have died. cory burdick is one of the many drivers injured by the air bag. >> when i saw the blood i thought i was going die. >> the company tested more than 30,000 of those already recalled inflators and nearly one in every 100 sent shrapnel flying when it was ignited. the government says if you receive a recall notification from your car's manufacturer, make an appointment to have it repaired. >> it was very worried. >> but the national highway transportation safety administration says it could take years to replace the air bags recalled and it isn't even sure the new inflators that had been used as part of the recall will be safe in the long run. >> there will be a test to ensure that the final remedy, the final inflator that goes in will be safe. period. >> the government set up the

news. here are your headlines where you live at 4:30. a grandma who was beaten on mother's day near san francisco's chinatown is now near death. vic lee is asking her family to ask witnesses to come forward. you see her here. vic will have a live report coming up on abc 7 news at 5:00. san francisco animal care and control is looking for the person who abused max and left him to die. lyanne melendez says they narrowed the area where it likely wanted and are looking for surveillance video where it likely happened. the walden west employee accuse of possessing hundreds of child pornography images edgar covarrubias is facing additional charges including lewd behavior with a child. he's scheduled to enter a plea late next month. an aerial tour of the oil spill of the central california coast revealed a staggering piece of new information today.

the coast guard now estimates the spill spans nine miles, not four miles as previously estimated. this is all happening at refugeio state beach. brandy hit joins us live to show us the damage. while we're talking about devastating damage here, we started to receive images of animals covered in oil. the worst-case scenario is 105,000 gallons of oil spilled when this pipeline burst as they move in to determine xa accountly what caused this big break. >> black waves crashing ashore are coating santa barbara's pristine beaches with thick oil. a whale is swimming dangerously close and now stretching nine miles. >> it's more than we anticipate last night and there are three oil spill response vessels helping to skim the oil that we can find.

>> reporter: as clean up crews race to remove the thick sludge it's unknown just how much oil spilled from the ruptured pipeline tuesday before the leak was capped. the line was at full operation transporting 2,000 barrels of crude per hour. the company is taking full responsibility as the epa launches a federal investigation. >> we have not been able to investigate exactly what caused the leak or whatever. we don't know at this point. >> reporter: with such widespread devastation, beach campers in the area are also being forced to evacuate as the beach has been shut down for the busy memorial day weekend. >> i feel more sorry for what's going on in the ocean than for people that have to pack up and leave. >> reporter: planes all american says the ruptured pipeline was inspected a couple of weeks ago, but it's not been turned over yet. federal officials are banning

fishing in the area right now. brandy hick his aishs 7 news. larry? thank you. a second marine has died of injuries suffered when an osprey crashed during an exercise training in hawaii. it went down outside honolulu. two other marines are hospitalized, but they're in stable condition. the unit was based in camp pendleton and was in hawaii training and the cause of the accident is under investigation. a norwegian cruise line ship is back where it should be, in the water, and the norwegian dawn is safely docked in bermuda after running aground when it lost power and the ship was refloated at high tide this morning and cruise line engineers along with independent safety inspectors are onboard looking at thees havel and no word when the ship with its 2600 passengers will set sail back to boston. convicted murderer aaron hernandez is in trouble once again. the former new england patriot allegedly agreed to be the lookout for another inmate

during a fight in a massachusetts prison monday. the source believes the incident was gang related and says all three men are being disciplined. officials would not confirm the report. hernandez is serving a life sentence for the 2013 murder of odin lloyd. author of california's ban of gay conversion therapy is taking his battle nationwide. los angeles congressman ted liu has introduced a bill in the house that would ban the controversial therapy at the federal level. the therapeutic fraud prevention act would include gender as well as sexual orientation. he championed similar legislation as a member of the state senate in 2013. the u.s. supreme court upheld the ban last year. a new poll today has state attorney general camela harris leading in next year's senate race. 19% of people would vote for harris and the poll found 58% of

another powerful storms has ripped through the nation's plains states. multiple tornadoes touched down in texas and oklahoma. by daybreak today we got a closer look at all of the damage as people began picking up the pieces. abc news reporter marcy gonzalez has the latest. >> today cleaning up after -- >> it's coming right toward us. >> reporter: a terrifying night of tornadoes. >> it's trying to pull itself together to make one large tornado. >> over the past 24 hours over 27 twisters reported ten in oklahoma, 17 in texas, leaving behind miles of destruction. >> we're in a tornado! >> some of the worst -- >> go this way! go this way! go this way! >> reporter: in mineral wells, west of texas. >> the storm scattering pieces of a road slamming into a church. >> pretty scary. >> and about 45 miles north, roofs torn off of homes.

in san jose. can a landlord require you to maintain a green lawn with the new drought restrictions. >> we were talking about a law where they couldn't do that to you, so if your landlord says you've got to maintain a green grass lawn then you have to do it. the only exception would be if you're trying to water the lawn and you have restrictions in your town like you have to do it every other day and that's not enough to keep it green you'd probably have to keep it green. if they tell you you have to keep it green, you have to. it is surprise. can you get rid of a half-full paint can. >> boy what a pain. the easiest way to deal with this is to go to paintcare.org and the website where you can go in your local area to get rid of a paint and all of the other -- >> you can also call up whoever takes your garbage away and generally they have the drop-off bins and whatever you do, don't

we recognize san francisco's street work shop, the oldest asian-pacific disciplinary arts organization in the united states. here's a photo of a fashion work shop the organization held. we have more info for you on our abc 7 news bay area instagram feed. crews in utah helped rescue a horse stuck in an eight-foot hole. neighbors with heavy duty machinery helped distract the hoist and hoist it carefully out of the hole monday. it appears the hole opened up during a rainstorm. brutus was unharmed after safely being removed from that hole. three whales have washed up on the san mateo coast recently. the latest yesterday was a gray whale in half moon bay and enough to raise concerns and had some people asking what is going on? >> wayne freedman took on that question and joins them live from the headwinds. >> it is an interesting question and they've kept records on this for 40 years. and in 40 years these would be the 19th, the 20th and the 21st whales to wash ashore on the

coastline. so if you look at the numbers the average would be one every two years, but we've had three in a month. on the san mateo county coast we've seen the opposite of an embarrassment of riches. three dead whales washing ashore within a few miles of each other and three where in the last two days crews have seen them much to the relief of local residents. >> we don't have a rotting corpse anymore. >> reporter: but is it just life or should we be alarmed by what seems like a proliferation of dead whales? >> this doesn't appear to be unusual at all. >> lauren rust of the maureen mammal center is one of the research biologists who performed a neck roppsy on the sperm whale that washed ashore. findings, inconclusive. >> it had been dead for -- it could have been several weeks floating in the water and by the time it came the organs were too

decomposed to send -- to sample and to send off to determine a cause of death. next came the humpback auto same beach in early may ask it had injuries that suggested it had been hit by a passing ship and yesterday the carcass of a mature female gray whale washed ashore in half moon bay. researchers could not perform a necropsy today. take comfort in the variety. >> there's nothing going on given that it's different species and different age classes. >> experts suggest we're seeing the byproduct of a numbers game and there are more whales offshore this time of year due to the annual migration. some of those animals will inevitably die. at this time of year more will wash ashore. from the marin headlands, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. that will do it for abc 7 news at 4:00. thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm larry beil and abc news begins with dan and cheryl.

we're talking about a 77-year-old grandmother here and we're talking about a person who attacked her without provocation. now, i spoke with a woman's granddaughter this morning connie ho and she says her family wants to know what happened and so do police. doctors tell lynn's family that 77-year-old woman is near death. >> the only thing we can do is let her leave comfortably. >> reporter: leung's granddaughter spoke via skype from honolulu. her grandmother was in chinatown shopping for groceries. this security camera shows her walking down the street before the attack. it's not exactly clear where it happened, but police believe it was here on stockton street between 12:30 and 2:00 in the afternoon. leung told her family she was struck twice in the head by a black woman when she got off a muni bus. >> she said she appeared to be
