outrageous dan. we're talking about a 77-year-old grandmother here and we're talking about a person who attacked her without provocation. now, i spoke with a woman's granddaughter this morning connie ho and she says her family wants to know what happened and so do police. doctors tell lynn's family that 77-year-old woman is near death. >> the only thing we can do is let her leave comfortably. >> reporter: leung's granddaughter spoke via skype from honolulu. her grandmother was in chinatown shopping for groceries. this security camera shows her walking down the street before the attack. it's not exactly clear where it happened, but police believe it was here on stockton street between 12:30 and 2:00 in the afternoon. leung told her family she was struck twice in the head by a black woman when she got off a muni bus. >> she said she appeared to be very angry and she was not sure

as to why she was i guess attacking her. >> leung was able to get to her home in japan town on her own but her daughter with whom she lives says she appeared disoriented. three days later she fell down the stairs and suffered severe brain trauma and other serious injuries. leung is in the hospital for a coma. doctors say her prognosis is not good. >> she will not recover from this injury again. and the likelihood of her waking up is not possible hope posted on instagram asking witnesses to step forward. including one special person. >> it's believed that there was a good samaritan who helped the victim after she was struck by the suspect. >> if you can help please call san francisco police. vic lee abc 7 news. a high school basketball star was shot and killed yesterday in oakland apparently

by people he knew. 17-year-old ed war mcgowan played basketball for fremont high school. police say he was driving in a vehicle on gar teeled avenue when an argument broke out and mcgowan was shot and found dead on the street by police. another officer who was wounded was arrested for the shooting. a jury has found a man guilty in the 2013. an alameda county superior court jury convicted 58-year-old brandy alana today. it took less than two hours to decide alana killed 60-year-old cooke. coke disappeared in august of 2013 and her body was found in a remote area in vacaville five days later. prosecutors said alana who had 17 prior convictions likely killed coke because she was ending their 20-year off and on relationship. additional charges have been filed against the south bay camp counselor. he is at the center of a child pornography investigation. abc 7 news reporter david louie

joins us with the latest outside the superior court building in san jose. david? >> edgar covarrubias is facing charges of manufacturing child pornography and not just possessing it. that's got to shock hundreds of south bay parents who are concerned who may have shot pictures or videos of their children. >> the new charges prompted the prosecutor to ask for the court to raise covarrubias' bail from $125,000 to $200,000. the request was granted. covarrubias said nothing in court as this will delay his entering a plea until the end of june. he was known as papa bear at walden west an overnight environmental ramp owned and run by the county office of education and he underwent a background check before he was put with the annual visitors and school kids from all over santa clara county. detectives discovered over 600 images and videos of what they labeled as child porn on

covarrubias covarrubias covarrubias' computer. prosecutor says they are not sure if others were involved. >> we are doing our best to go in through all of the leads that we have been provided to make sure there's no one else, and we are in the process of still doing that. it is an ongoing investigation. parents wait for new details. the office of education maintains a website to share what it knows, but it declined a request for an on-camera interview. >> ihow do we know he did not place cameras in the showers and the toilets and things like that. >> those are the nagging questions parents want answer, but the investigation is still ongoing. david louie abc 7 news. believe it or not there is a new safety concern for the bay bridge. one of the steel rods that spans the tower to the foundation failed what's called a poll test and it fractured. a bridge spokeswoman says it is one out of the 424 rods that it has tested that has failed and

it is unclear what caused the rod to break. last fall crews discovered more than 400 of the rod his been immersed in rain water and experts believe that could crack when exposed to water. state officials have essentially shut down the transit start-up in san francisco and leap operates a line of high-end busses between the for ina and district. we've reported on it before. they have issued a cease-and-desist order saying it does not have a proper permit to operate. leap has addressed the issue and hopes to resolve it soon. chp and firefighters responded to that scene on the west macarthur onramp to westbound 580. the oakland chp was talking to the driver of the car that was carrying m80 fireworks and the ramp has since reopened to traffic. >> monday as you know is memorial day honoring the nation's war dead a solemn time and today the california highway patrol paid tribute to its officers killed in the line of

duty. >> >> july 10 1938. ♪ ♪ >> the chp's golden gate division held its annual memory ceremony today in vallejo. a total of 235 officers have lost their lives while on duty in the chp's 86-year history. 37 of them from this division. it is an emotional event as you can imagine even as joan baker who lost her husband 46 years ago. >> i hope all of us respects all of our law enforcement who keep us safe and secure and for the great sacrifice they give. >> officers say the event is not only about mourning but renewal and new hope for the families of the fallen officers. police have released the 911 calls from a dramatic wrong-way

chase and crash along the east bay. officers say the driver identified as a 30-something man on probation took off the wrong way down highway 242 to highway 4 and interstate 80 in the stolen car before crashing into an suv at california street and hearst avenue at berkeley and the suspect called 911 at one point to tell police to back off. >> i'm going to crash! >> are you the driver driving the wrong way? >> yes, i am! you need to stop following me! tell the hospitalelicopter to stop following me. >> officers and k-9 units searched the neighborhood, but they were not able to find him. new information about a dog that was severely beaten in san francisco. there is a person of interest but animal care is asking for

public to identify him. lyanne melendez is live in the newsroom. >> max milian had to be put down because his kidneys were too damaged. there are a lot of people out there who really want to find the person who did this. there is a person of interest another homeless man but the only way they can nail him is through surveillance cameras. >> this afternoon we found max milian's owner mark anthony too distraught to get out of his tent. >> i would like to find the person that did this to my dog and -- [ indiscernible ] >> his dog was stolen around noon from this homeless encampment under the 101 freeway at cesar chavez street. he was found severely beaten with cigarette burns three days later. he was chained to this fence at division and south vanes in. max milian was left to die. this is a picture of max before he was taken.

league officials claim curry violated the anti-flopping league rules. a flop is where a player intentionally falls down to create the appearance of a fall, a foul. fans thought he was fouled, but not coach steve kerr. >> i think he did flop and i think everybody else does, too. it's not a big deal. it shouldn't affect anything for the next game or beyond. >> this was the first fine for curry for flopping. if he gets called on it again it will cost him $10,000. there's controversy this afternoon over curry's decision to bring his 2-year-old daughter to the post game news conference, and some reporters complained after the fact saying it impacts their ability to do their jobs in a timely manner. coach kerr doesn't think it's an issue. >> i'm all for it. i'm going to actually make it a requirement for steph to bring riley every single press conference. that was the most entertaining press conference ever. my wife was loving it by the way.

advanced fee, never fulfilling his promises. he faces 95 criminal counts including mortgage fraud, grand theft and financial crimes against the elderly. he could face up to 84 years in prison. we are still tracking down developments in this case and we'll have an update on abc 7 news at 6:00. the company behind a massive recall of air bags says it will boost production to speed up replacing defective parts. the recall affects 34 million vehicles and includes 11 tom automakers and air bag inflators can spray metal shards. japanese supplier takata says replacing all of the inflators could take years. it's a lot easier these days to take home the bacon. prices at the supermarket are down 25% a savings of $1.25. that's because the supply of pork is said to be excellent. reproduction has made up for

county and mendocino county we've been seeing storms firing up today. and we have had a report from one of our viewers and at 3:00 loaded into abc 7 news and said it's thundering and pouring now. guess what? between kelseyville and lake port, we have pretty good lightning strikes so you'll probably see more of that. pea-sized hail has been reported east of clear lake so don't be surprised if more shows up and it's an area of low pressure with the counter clockwise flow that is producing thunderstorms in the sierra nevada and northern california mountains and this is going to continue. check out the raindrops from the lake tahoe camera and they'll be looking at more of this going into tomorrow. low 60s, oakland san carlos and temperatures remain below average in this time of year and 54 in san jose and 55 in half moon bay, sun shining and it got up to 67 today. it is in the mid-60s around napa concord, livermore and highs so far have made it into
