chicago, miami, traffic already building up. you know it will be bumper to bumper later. more than 30 million drivers on the road. breaking news overnight. the suspect in that brutal murder of a washington d.c. mansion arrested. he was on the run. taken into custody. after a takedown by u.s. marshals. five others arrested with him. abc's ryan smith has all of the latest from washington. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: just over a week after a family and their house keeper was killed, daron dillon wint, the suspect finally caught. authorities just missing him in new york but last night taking dramatic steps to get their man. a week-long manhunt that captivated the country ending dramatically overnight. authorities arresting daron dylon wint and taking into custody several others. the primary suspect in the brutal murders.

>> we're able to take him down and arrest him. >> reporter: police release this surveillance video of a man believed to be wint last week running in the area where the family's blue porsche was sent ablaze. found two miles from where his parents live. after chasing leads from d.c. to new york city, authorities apprehended wint. as he traveled in a white chevrolet cruz. from college park, maryland. companying him, two women and one other man. according to the washington post, $10,000 also in the truck. wint charged with first-degree felony murder. his dna was found on a domino's pizza crust, has a long history of alleged assaults and threatening behavior. >> we believe there's a connection between this suspect in this case through the business. >> reporter: the motive for the killing is still unclear, but wint, whose court records describe him as a welder, was a

former employee of savvas savopoulos. >> how is the company holding up? >> not good. >> not good? >> very sad. >> authorities believe the victims were taken captive may 13th and killed the next day before the home was set ablaze. and in the hours before the fire, according to documents obtained by the washington post, there were a series of calls from savvas' phone to a bank and an accountant. his assistant dropped off an envelope containing $40,000. authorities say the four victims suffered trauma and stab wounds. it's still unclear what role if any the others in custody might have played. while this community can rest a bit easier knowing a suspected killer is off the streets, the surviving savvas savopoulos' teen daughters now having to focus on a june 1st funeral for their parents and their little brother. george. we're joined by the commander of the u.s. marshals task force, robert fernandez. thanks for joining us this

morning and congratulations. this has been around the clock manhunt. right? >> it's been a busy 48 hours. >> you tracked the suspect to brooklyn, back down to the d.c. area? >> yes, wednesday, we did our investigations and we were able to determine at night he was in the brooklyn area and then along with the new york police department task force officers went to the location but he had just fled. so they barely missed him wednesday night. >> yesterday, you track him down to college park, maryland, and at that point, you basically have him surrounded and 20 vehicles ready to take him on. >> we continued our investigations down here and we were able to marry up the information from both locations and determine he was en route back to the d.c. area, we had to figure out where he was heading. once he was in college park at that hotel, we made a plan to figure out which hotel room he was in and take him down.

but things are always fluid when you're trying to find a human body when they're mobile and before we could get to the hotel, two vehicles left and he was in one of the vehicles. >> any idea where he was headed? >> heading northbound on route 1. we followed them for several miles trying to identify which vehicle he was in. we had a good feeling he was in one of them but we didn't want to take down the wrong one. they did a whacky u-turn, we thought maybe they were aware they were being tailed. we weren't sure what was going to happen. when we tried to take him down. you never know how a fugitive like this is going to be react. >> amazingly no shots fired and no one was hurt. >> we continued to follow them into northeast d.c. until we could tactically take them down safely. we did a vehicle pin maneuver on both vehicles and we were able to stop them and arrest everybody without a shot fired. nobody getting hurt.

very little damage to any vehicle. >> did he say anything? >> no, everybody was just placed into custody. d.c. police were there immediately. their crime scene search was there and homicide detectives were there. we turned everybody over to d.c. police department. >> and he was in a car with two other women and there were two men in the car in front? >> there was another man and two women in the car with him, four individuals and two males driving the moving truck. >> are you tracking any other accomplice right now? >> right now, no. >> commander fernandez, thanks very much for your time this morning. >> thank you very much. robin, we got a statement from the savopoulos family. they say they're grateful to law enforcement for making this arrest. they go on to say we hope it restores a sense of calmness in our neighborhood. and city. we're blessed to live in a community who supported us and are grieving with us. >> we're continuing to think of them and lift them up in prayer. now to the big holiday weekend, millions of americans

ready to head out on the roads and in the air. aaa predicts 33 million people will drive this weekend the most in a decade and the airports will be packed, too, full team coverage on the highways, at the airports. ginger starts us off but unfortunately the weekend is going to be a washout down south. >> if you are traveling to or through denver, dallas, houston, oklahoma city, this is going to be an issue. i-35 i-40. not just the beginning of the weekend. all weekend. corpus christi, texas, 4 1/2 inches of rain in just one hour. that was happening in the last 24 hours. now we're going to get more. some of the meals you had planned for the holiday are going to move. the flooding there. rain coming through this morning. flash flood watches. arkansas back to north texas. oklahoma, its wettest month on record. >> okay, ginger, thanks very much.

one of the worst traffic days of the year. millions hitting the road. we sent our linsey davis to the worst traffic expressway. in new york. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, george. it's not disappointing, living up to its expectation. as awful traffic, we are at a complete standstill at this point. believe it or not, it's expected to get worse than this. the worst time for traffics the same hours apply as prime-time beach time, 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. their advice, if you want to avoid traffic leave at 4:00 a.m. memorial day weekend is one of the busiest times to travel and this year, aaa estimates 33 million people will be on the road. making it the busiest in a decade. all this, while prices at the pump are climbing to around $2.70 per gallon, almost a dollar cheaper than the same time last year. with more people on the road, that means one thing is guaranteed -- traffic.

but interactive driving could have a solution. it gives you the fastest travel route based on realtime travel data from other users warning you about obstructions like accidents, potholes and traffic jams that may slow you down. not as simple knowing the quickest routes you also need to know when to hit the road. >> the worst time to leave is between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. that's when everyone is going to leave. if you don't want to see traffic, leave at 4:00 a.m. >> on monday, rush hour is in the middle of day. >> people are on the road the most on memorial day, during 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. if you want to go to the beach leave earlier or if you're about to return home, it's best to wait until after 4:00 or 5:00 p.m. >> reporter: don't think tuesday is any better for beating traffic. >> leave for work about one to two hours early. unless you have an audio book you really want to finish in which case you're gold. >> reporter: the top

destinations for drivers this memorial day weekend, san francisco, philadelphia, miami and portland. george? >> okay, thanks very much, linsey. also, a record number of americans expected to fly this summer as you know and some new technology could help eliminate one of the worst parts about flying, those lengthy delays. abc's david kerley is at reagan national with that story. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, robin. texting sometimes is quicker than calling someone on the phone and the same is true for airplanes. for the past couple of years the faa has been testing a new system, texting information between the tower and the aircraft. it's basically the same thing you do with your phones, flight plans changes all texting. trying this in memphis and new york. they're going to roll it out to 50 different airports. united airlines is part of this program. it's saying it's saving six to eight minutes per flight. >> part of a plan to move planes faster?

control of two cities in syria, the ancient city of palmyra and there are fears they could destroy historic ruins in that city and in iraq, the u.s. is rushing anti-tank rockets to iraqi forces this morning after isis gained control of ramadi by leveling entire city blocks with massive truck bombs. george, it's been a terrible week there. >> martha raddatz, thank very much. back here at home, it's a beach weekend for millions as you know, but not in one stretch of california, that major oil spill shutting down popular beaches as new questions are raised about the company that runs that broken pipeline and abc's kendis gibson has the latest. >> reporter: massive cleanup effort is underway, striking new images from above shows the immense scale of the spill. as oil edges closer to the shore. up to 105,000 gallons of crude oil escaping a busted pipeline.

now, the company that runs the pipeline coming under fire, records indicating plains all american pipeline with 175 safety and maintenance violations in the last nine years. paying out more than $24 million in damages. >> the number of reported incidents by percentage is well within industry norm. >> reporter: the toll of the spill captured in these images. this sea lion covered in oil. a pelican washing ashore. state wildlife super mike harris rushing to its rescue. >> lot of these animals are going to start hitting the beaches ahead. >> reporter: with 200 species. wildlife officials expecting the situation to get much worse. >> oil has a very big impact on the wildlife here. >> reporter: now the oil spreading to the south, impacting the beachfront home of brad pitt and angelina jolie and forcing the closure of two popular beaches and campgrounds. >> they're evacuating the entire campground.

>> reporter: kendis gibson, abc news. santa barbara. amy has this morning's other top stories. starting with a spread of salmonella. the latest outbreak of salmonella is being blamed on sushi, being traced to raw tuna. no particular product has been identified as of yet. or supplier. more than 50 people including a baby have been sickened so far, most of them in california, but nine other states have reported poisoning a well. scientists are trying to find the source. another new revelation from the clinton foundation, this time acknowledging that it received up to $26 million in undisclosed payments, coming from corporations and other sources, collected as fees from speeches given by bill, hillary and chelsea clinton. the foundation saying the fees had been listed as revenue instead of donations. a grand jury has indicted all six baltimore police officers charged in freddie gray's death. the charges include

unbelievable rescue caught on camera, a police officer risking his life to save a dog swept away by a raging river. matt gutman has the story. >> reporter: a terrifying ordeal for a dog trapped in these rushing waters. the pup struggling to stay afloat. battered by loose debris and rocks. when all hope seems lost, two cops on patrol rush in to help. one wade into the roaring waters. managing to snatch the dog out of the water. bringing him to shore. close to death. but check out what happens next. the officers transform themselves into two-man cpr team. one giving mouth to mouth and the other pumping the dog's chest. when he revives both of them giving their little poochy patient some belly rubs. the officers named the dog prince. he'll fully recover just in time for the dog days of summer.

here's bazi kanani. >> reporter: he's an active child again after a pool party almost cost him his life. >> i just turned a bit and he felt brave and jumped from the step into the spa. >> reporter: the spa jets forced rowan under water for at least 20 seconds before his mom was able to pull him out. >> he's okay. he's not blue. he's choking up the water. he seems fine. >> reporter: an hour later, rowan wasn't himself. he started to cough and was lethargic. >> i called the doctor and he said to go to the e.r. >> reporter: he was experiencing secondary drowning a condition that doctors say uncommon but say it can be fatal. >> 24 hours to develop symptoms. most people if they have a significant event develop symptoms within about four to eight hours. >> reporter: the fluid that remains in the lung prevents the tiny air sacs moving out to the

lung. breathing becomes harder and harder. if not caught in time, decreased oxygen can cause the heart to stop. >> it takes a surprising small amount of fluid to actually cause damage to the lungs. in a child it can be a quarter of a can of a soda. >> reporter: rowan survived after a frightening stay in the hospital. a year later she updated her blog, delighted momma, to let others known he's taking swimming lessons and to warn other parents about the dangers of secondary drowning. doctors say parents should keep an eye on their kids for up to 24 hours. if they have difficulty breathing, coughing, take them to the hospital immediately. water safety expert says teaching kids how to swim is one of several steps towards keeping them safe. >> at least a four-feet fence around your pool so they can't climb over.
