live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. good afternoon. thank you for joining us today. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm larry beil. first at 4:00 sky 7 hd shows the wreckage left behind in alameda county from a fatal plane crash. you can see remnants of the single-engine cessna on the ground. >> this happened near castro valley south of i-80. the plane was flying from concord in san jose when it crashed. abc 7 news reporter katie udas is live near the crash scene and katy you were able to speak to the pilot's family. >> the family is still in shock and they wanted to invite me into their home so they could share memories of their beloved father and husband. the county coroner's office is still working to positively identify the victim at this

hour. however, those efforts were hindered, as you can see by the terrain behind me which is where the plane was located in the hills and only by the air. it was difficult to find. the plane is owned by a 67-year-old lafayette man, andrew morse. i spoke with his wife joanne this afternoon and she says the longtime pilot flew his cessna to commute to a job site. he worked as a developer and morse took off from concord yesterday morning and when he didn't arrive at reid hillview airport in sacramento his family reported him missing and about 24 hours later civil air patrol pilots located it near castro valley and they located it this morning and there are not any obvious indications as to what caused the plane to crash. the faa and the ntsb will be investigating. the alameda county sheriff's office helped in the search and say weather and darkness hindered their efforts of finding the plane last night. >> it did start a very small

fire and a couple of location but because the grass was damp it did not go any further. had that fire continued, obviously, we would have had reports of a fire and been able to find the plane a lot quicker. >> reporter: the family tells me he was active in the lafayette community known as the mayor of the block for always taking care of people and the head of the boy scout troop when they were young and the family loved to go skiing. ntsb investigations are often lengthy and it is unclear when we'll know exactly what caused the crash. live in castro valley katie utas. >> more developing news now. a military plane went off the runway at naval air station north island and landed in the san diego bay this afternoon. our sister station in san diego says the navy pilot overshot the runway and was ejected. officials continue to investigate the accident. we will bring you updates on

twitter at bay news bay area. >> you might think closing the san mateo bridge during the memorial day weekend was not a good idea. you believe lots of people will be out of town for the holiday weekend and meaning fewer people on the road and you're looking at a live shot of the san mateo bridge right now. caltrans close the san mateo bridge two weeks ago and that caused major congestion on the dumbarton and bay bridges. this weekend's closure begins tonight at 10:00 and set to reopen on monday memorial day, and the closure will let crews finish up and resurfacing parts of the bridge. >> taking a live look at the skyway in san francisco, you are jammed up in both directions and that's your traffic approaching the lower deck of the bay bridge and trying to get to the east bay and you're heading toward 101 southbound and it is not looking good. aaa says this memorial day will

milder beginning to memorial day weekend than we've had much of the swing and let's take a look at what's going on right now and here's live doppler 7 hd and partial clearing much like the afternoons we've had earlier this week and over in the sierra we still have the wintry mix and snow in the higher elevations and rain down below and the passes are open in tioga pass are now open so the snow is a bit lighter and way above 8,000 feet and from the exploratorium camera we see partly cloudy skies and mainly drizzle and light showers and mainly on the peninsula and santa cruise mountains and highway 17 summit and woodside .02 at half moon bay and 0.01. and there will be more drizzle tonight and early tomorrow morning, but by afternoon tomorrow we'll be looking at partly cloudy to mainly sunny

skies and they're rising into the mid to upper 70s inland and mid to upper 50s on the coast and we'll get further warming as we get farther into the weekend. larry and ama? >> spencer, thank you. enough fresh water to supply 500 homes for an entire year is now in the san francisco bay after police say vandals damaged part of an inflatable dam in fremont. video from sky 7 hd shows the broken dam along alameda creek near the rancho arroyo neighborhood. individuals entered the restricted area some time yesterday morning and more than 49 million gallons washed out into the bay and the dam which was instrumental sustained irreversible damage. officials are working on a replacement. >> high winds and waves are slowing cleanup efforts along the southern california beach. this is new drone captured today and shows the extent of the spill that spans nine miles in

santa barbara county. 5,000 gallons of crude oil was down a culvert about 25,000 gallons reached the beach. >> a sea lion coated in oil from the santa barbara oil spill is being cleaned up at seaworld's wild life care center in san diego. this is video provided by the theme park. the 1 to 4-year-old female was extremely lethargic and emaciate emaciated when she was brought in with oil covering her body face and her flippers. they have been sent to care facilities. the latest quake to rock napa county has people feeling edgy today. >> the quake hit just before 8:00 last night about 9 miles north of napa and 16 miles north of last year's 6.0 napa quake. abc news reporter elissa harrington tells us while there was no damage there are shaken nerves. >> the 4.1 magnitude earthquake jolted wine country before 8:00 last night. residents described an abrupt shaking that lasted ten seconds.

>> all of a sudden there was like a big bang and the blinds went back and forth. it was centered around yountville known for the world-class culinary scene like the three-time restaurant, the french laundry, they were hosting a dinner party when the dishes started to shake. >> all of a sudden i had one of my french doors open and it sounded like a very large truck was coming down the street, just bouncing along and all of a sudden the table shook, was there a loud crack and then it was over. >> reporter: she says the tremor didn't even scare her dog, but it did rattle others triggering memories of the napa quake that damaged more than a thousand buildings last year. >> it was a little scary especially since last year. >> today workers continue to make repairs in napa's downtown. there are no reports of new damage, but people tell me the tremor serves as a crucial reminder to prepare. >> some of the cabinets are now fastened to the wall and the tv

is secured to the stand. it's not going to fall off this time. >> we bolted our tv in hanging things differently, but slowly but surely and these are just reminders that things can happen on larger scales at any time. >> reporter: this earthquake was smaller, but served as an unwelcome reminder of the large one that rocked the area last summer leaving buildings like this one crumbling and in need of repair. in napa elissa harrington, abc 7 news. nearly 300 emails from former secretary of state hillary clinton are now public. >> abc news reporter marcy gonzalez tells us there's information that should not have been in her personal email. >> of the thousands of pages of email sent to and from hillary clinton's private account while she was secretary of state nearly 300 messages were released today. all related to libya and the deadly 2012 terrorist attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi.

>> they do not change our understanding of what happened before, during or after the attack. >> reporter: some of the messages include sensitive information which state department policy advises against putting in personal email. at least one of the emails contain details about suspects located by the fbi. >> it's not uncommon to find information that was previously unclassified to upon later review and based on changing events in the world be deemed classified. >> all of the information in the emails was handled appropriately. >> the emails made public today are the same ones already reviewed by a house select committee investigating benghazi which notes the messages raise questions about how much clinton knew about the deteriorating security information leading up to the attacks. the head of the committee and other republicans also point to key periods in which there are no emails calling on clinton to hand over her private email

happening now, a boat has just washed up in the surf in a popular san francisco beach. sky 7 hd is live over the boat at ocean beach right now. the fire department says no one

was aboard this 24-foot long boat when crews arrived. the coast guard is also on the scene. the boat has been named the daisy painted across the back and no reports of anyone being hurt at this point or if even a may day was called in the area that would have indicated that that boat was in trouble. petaluma police are on the lookout for two men that attacked a gas station clerk during a robbery. this happened monday afternoon may 11th, so 11 days ago at the texaco gas station on petaluma boulevard. this new surveillance video was just released this afternoon and one of the men grabs her by the face and holds her back. they both took handfuls of merchandise and ran off and the cashier was not injured. a dockworkers' dispute that caused a backup is now over. union members have approved a new deal. the labor dispute brought international shipping at 29 sea ports including the port of oakland. today the international longshore and warehouse union

announced 82% of members ratified the contract. it will boost the base salary of dockworkers to more than $42 an hour. toothpaste, soap and other hygiene products may soon be minus one ingredient. today the state assembly passed a bill to include microbeads. the tiny plastic particles are seen as critics as unnecessary toxic additives that are biodegradeable and dangerous to marine life. the senate has to approve the ban, as well. a group of teenagers in oakland learned an unexpected lesson after someone stole. last week somebody stole all of them from the youth group adviser's car. generous donors learned about the theft on social media and jumped in giving 8,000 new diapers. the lesson kindness wins out over crime. >> it made me angry at first

because that was all of the youth group's hard work. >> it was really -- it was shocking, and it was better than what we hoped for came out of something as bad as 1,000 diapers being stolen. if you want to help, we have a link at abc 7 news.com. today is harvey milk day marking the anniversary of the first openly gay politician elected to office. he was elected to the board of supervisors in 1977 and was assassinated the following year. stewart milk, his nephew and creator of the harvey milk foundation organize events each year to celebrate his uncle's legacy. lieutenant governor gavin newsom tweeted this photo of milk and one of his quotes hope will never be silent and wished him a happy birthday. harvey milk's life and legacy today. the city will remain a beacon of hope and opportunity for all. and democratic presidential

candidate hillary clinton says h hlgbt rights. the warriors are finally on their way to houston and getting there was not easy. guard clay thompson didn't have a care in the world this morning as he walked to the team's charter flight out of oakland but the players and coaches would have to return to the terminal because of mechanical problems with the plane and they waited more than five hours. we are told the flight finally took off about 40 minutes ago. the delay is frustrating, but when the warriors do land in houston they will do so with a 2-0 series lead. golden state beat houston and andre iguodala bringing the house down. they had five seconds left and golden state up one and by the splash brothers and it's a turnover, game over right there and the warriors come up as time runs out and the final was 99-98

overcast and they've become partly sunny and i think that pattern will change over the weekend and we have partly sunny skies right now with a few lingering clouds and it was cloudy for much of the day and right now we have temperature readings of 60 in san francisco and 61 across the bay and oakland and hayward in san carlos and 67, san jose and 72 at fairfield. a little milder in our inland area and here is a lovely view and looking eastward along the bay bridge as we take a look at the forecast features and spotty drizzle is possible as it has in the last two or three nights and we see a milder pattern and it will turn cooler on monday. here's what's happening in the atmosphere. water vapor satellite image shows the low pressure system which we showed you yesterday which was offshore continue to push inland and moving into the southern nevada area and it will be leaving las vegas soon and that's going to open up the door for a warmer pattern this

weekend and cooling will quickly follow that warming and 7:00 this evening during the late night and overnight hours we'll see clouds increase and mainly south and east of the golden gate into early morning tomorrow and by afternoon tomorrow, mainly sunny and a few lingering clouds near the coastline and out over the santa cruz mountains and it will be milder tomorrow than today especially inland and the high temperature range tomorrow will reach about 60 in san francisco and mid-60s generally around the bay and mid-70s inland and it will be warmer still on sunday which is the warmest of the three-day weekend days and the fog will linger near the coastline and we'll see high temperatures inland and then low clouds return with a sea breeze on monday and that will carry cooling, marine air into the inland areas and it will start to cool down on monday. overnight look for low temperatures in the mid-50s and the chance of spotty drizzle and

news. in news making headlines where you live at 4:30 the national transportation safety board is investigating a small plane crash near castro valley. the plane was reported missing last night. the pilot was the only person onboard any died in the crash. >> a magnitude 4.1 earthquake centered near yountville hit just before 8:00 p.m. last night and wayne freedman says everything is fine in napa as the city is still recovering from the 6.0 quake last august. wayne will have a live report coming up at 5:00. schools of the art school in san francisco have a high number of students who don't live in the city. lyanne melendez says the san francisco school board is disturbed over the high number and may change the policy. lyanne will have more at 5:00. a new roof over the heads of san francisco's homeless veterans and that's made by ed lee and made possible by millions of dollars. vic lee is live in the newsroom with the story.

vic? >> ama that $5 million, seed monoel that be used in a private/public partnership to build the affordable housing facility in mission bay and that's a fitting announcement before memorial day. >> they say that on any given night, 50,000 veterans sleep on our nation's streets. >> no man or woman especially those who serve our country should have to sleep on the street. >> sales force chairman was among the group of tech and business leaders who gave $5 million toward this project which will house homeless veterans and low-income families. the golden state warriors was a part of the philanthropic group. >> it was a call to action and one that the warriors are asking, after all we call ourselves the golden state warriors. 101 housing units will be constructed on the corner of third and mission rock streets. it's adjacent to the muni t-line across the street from the new public safety building and close

to the ballpark. 50 of the units will be for low-income families and the other 50 for homeless vets. for mayor ed lee, his passion for this project is personal. >> i don't have an opportunity to thank my dad for being a veteran. so i will speak through the veterans here to thank him. >> reporter: also thankful for the project, duane ray, a vietnam vet who works for the va's outreach program. he was once homeless. >> some nights i used to walk all night and then get on the bart in the morning and ride bart. >> many sad stories like that among veterans who returned home especially among those who served in vietnam. the city's human services agency will provide on-site services at that housing project to support veterans' needs. construction begins next year. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> vic, thank you.

authorities have named the man accused of driving a stolen dump truck through three bay areas cities and injuring three people in the process. authorities say 36-year-old mark edward hill aimed several tons of metal at a patrol car and took off. he led them from san francisco to south san francisco into daley city before crashing into an unoccupied car and then tried to run away. police believe he was on some type of drug. >> a bay area man arrested and advertised at lax has been charged. witnesses shot video of the incident on wednesday. christian james hines of danville refused to go through screening and pushed himself past through security and he has one felony count of resisting arrest and one misdemeanor for avoiding a screening. >> two men are in federal custody planning to join isis. >> one at los angeles international airport and the other at an anaheim motel.

federal prosecutors said the man bought a plane ticket in hopes of becoming a martyr. >> beyond any sensible thought. he is not the type. he's a good kid. >> i met him and he was a nice guy. really nice guy and for him, are you sure? >> authorities confiscated computers and other materials from the motel room, he is accused of providing material to a terrorism group. darron wint was taken into custody following a massive man hunts. >> reporter: darron wint appeared in d.c. court today charged with first-degree felony murder. >> mr. wint is now incarcerated and he's held without bond, all work is not done. we will continue to investigate this case and bring all charges

that are appropriate in the coming weeks. >> reporter: the man hunt that stretched from washington to new york ended late last night when u.s. marshalls took him into custody. wint is the main suspect in the brutal deaths of savvas saf op louse, his wife amy and their son and the housekeeper. two other men in a separate vehicle were all taken into custody, but have not been charged. wint was in brooklyn on wednesday. he took a bus there to see his girlfriend. u.s. marshalls almost nabbed him there, but were too late. some time late wednesday night or thursday morning wint hired a car service to take him back to washington and it's believed he paid in cash. authorities picked up his trail again in maryland tracking him to this hotel outside washington. >> saw two three police officers going down that way didn't think much about it because he was supposed to be up in brooklyn, i thought. >> wint and his companions left

that hotel and were fol scomploed later arrested in northeast washington. his motive for the killing is still unclear but police say it wasn't random. >> he did work at american eye works at one time in the past. >> that's the company where saa vop loss was ceo. they believe more than one person was responsible for holding the savopoulos the housekeeper captive. tlc has pulled the reality show "19 kids and counting" after star josh duggar admitted he molested underaged girls including his sisters. he is deeply saddened and troubled by the heartbreaking situation. according to a 2006 police report duggar's parents reported the incidents to police, but charges were never filed and much more on the family drama coming up at 5:30

the trees that are under water. it's surrounded by floodwaters in liberty, texas, just outside of houston. weeks of rain have caused the trinity river to overflow its banks and the flooding is at the highest level in more than 20 years and the river is expected to keep rising over the weekend because more rain is in the forecast there. >> nothing here i don't think. >> think we'll get some sunshine. >> we'll get more sunshine than we've had of late as the weekend approaches and warmer conditions, as well. here is a look at live doppler 7 hd and meanwhile, over in the sierra we have another outbreak of afternoon thunderstorms. you see the lightning strikes over there north of lake tahoe and that's been the pattern throughout much of the week and the late afternoon hours and looking at the 48 contiguous states tomorrow and bad news for texas which has been hounded by devastating storms and more will hit the plains tomorrow from north to south and the eastern third of the nation will be mainly dry and the intermountain
