is tracking the fire just south of east ridge mall. >> reporter: the wind is blowing and that is not helping firefighters. this grass fire is burning behind east ridge moll just south of quinn by road and thick smoke permeates the area. it started just before 4:30 p.m. at an empty lot. east capitol -- between quinnby and anymoran boulevard is closed to traffic. fire crews are using the road as a staging area for trucks. there is a housing subdivision across the street called the carlisle apartment homes and residents have been coming tout see the flames first hand. >> we went down the street. we seen the trees on fire. and when the walked a little bit more and jumped to the palm trees and they just incinerated. fast. so dry. and then from there just you seek how far it spread. >> now it's just keeping going hasn't stopped.

church of transfiggation in castro valley. sergio has more. >> reporter: this is what the cross looks like now. you can see that the bronze sculpture of christ is missing. parishioners figure it was stolen tuesday night. when you get right up to the cross you seek the bolts that used to hold the bronze figure in place have been broken. leaders public it was pried off or 'pulled off. many members of the church are shocked some someone would steal a sacred figure from their church. >> has been reported, and the people are looking, and all this scrap metal merchants and people who buy this kind of thing have been warned and something offered a reward and so -- and the police are investigating.

and so we are waiting for something to turn up. >> reporter: members of the community have also offered to help pay for a replacement statue. this figure has been in place for years and was a custom piece designed just for this parish. so church leaders are now trying to figure out if they can gate replacement from the canadian vendor who provided it so many years ago. now i did ask church leaders what they would do if someone simply returned the statue. one church leader says the theft is something that can be forth -- forgiven. >> in sonoma ya county, dna evidence help police identify the remains of a man missing nearly five years. john farfand walked out of a car facility in 2010. a year ago a man called to report finding human bones in a wooledded area of shilo park in

nearby winsor. dna testing confirms the bones are those of farfan. the county coroner says he dade less than these years ago. this week we could learn as the man accused of being the so-called gypsy hill serial killer is mentally fit to stand trial. two psychiatrists who examined him will testify. he is cashed with killing killing two young women in 1976. he is suspected in the murders of three others in northern california and nevada. the charges came earlier this year after investigators match evidence his dna to cigarette butt's left at some of the crime scenes. the san mateo bridge is expected to re-open as planned at 5:00 tomorrow morning. crews will likely finish replacing a half million square feet of pavement just within the function e information few hours and then you into feel a smoother quieter ride across the bridge's highrise span

a pioneering female comedian and actress has died. ann meara wife of actor jerry stiller and mother of ben stiller passed away yesterday. she is most recently known for he roles on all my children, sex in the city and the king of queens. meara and stiller were married for 61 years and worked together for most of that time. they were regulars on thed sullivan show and in 1963 recorded their live comedy album in san francisco at the hungry i nightclub. steve martin tweeted stiller and meara have been a wonderful presence in comedy my whole life. now ann meara is gone and i

salute her. and rosy o'donnell says with a heavy heart, she was so real. she was 85 years old. a local world war ii hero celebrated a special milestone today. we were in castro valley as john enjoyed his 100th birthday with family and friends. he joined the navy as a teenager during the depression in 1934. today he told us huh the felt when the u.s. troped the nuclear bomb to end the war. >> we were glad. we wanted to get it over with. you are out there for years, after floating around you got a family back here that you don't see. so you want to get back home. >> he lost his wife of 75 years mary, just last year. she was 99. he credits avoiding junk food and rarely eating meat for his longevity. very happy birthday, john and

thousands of people enjoyed a san francisco tradition in the mission district today. [music] >> dancers brought the culture of lattin america and the caribbean to life during the carnivale parade along mission street. the parade is part of the 37th 37th annual carnivale festival. looks like a lot of fun too. bad there couldn't be some sun shining on the parade today. maybe it's best to stay out of the direct heat when you're in a parade. >> yeah, yeah, although we could have used the heat with costumes and there was quite a bit of heat just not at the coast and san francisco. live doppler 7hd showing us the cloud cover into the bay right now. i want to take you to the tahoe area. we have been seeing lightning

strikes and severe weather just heading right now through truckee, along interstate 80. this could cause ponding on the roadways and dime-size hail has been reported so be extra careful and stay indoors or in your car if you're in the area. right now check out the winds. they're coming in from the coast and funnel right through the golden gate bridge and then spread throughout the bay. so even gusting up to 35 miles-per-hour, fairfield and in many areas in the 20s sfo, san carlos mountain view. that kept things cool along the coast and parts of the bay. and check out the temperature spread. 54, san francisco, 55 half moon bay, 76 and sunny in brentwood. it hit 81 earlier today. so wide range of temperatures. live shot, golden gate bridge, low clouds, and that's going to spill in overnight. what you can expect is more of the drizzle into tomorrow
