good morning to you all. i'm t.j. holmes. >> and i'm marci gonzalez in for reena ninan. we begin with the relentless storms hammering the southern plains. sweeping away homes, cars, and everything in their paths. blamed now for as many as six deaths. >> meanwhile, 12 people are missing in central texas. two families swept away in their vacation home. and a texas dam getting breached after getting swamped with nine inches of rain in three hours. officials warning people in nearby homes to get to higher ground. a reporter in houston trying to keep it together, having a tough time in this torrential downpour. struggling there to keep from blowing away and still do her job. >> and floodwaters raging through a golf course in austin. after a creek spilled its bank. it is not over yet. look at the radar here. that severe weather still on the move. we get the latest from bazi kanani. >> reporter: another dousing in texas, drivers in houston deciding whether to abandon

their cars or try to push through. hundreds forced to wait it out for hours inside the stadium after the rockets game ended. >> oh, my god. oh, my god. >> reporter: the raging floodwaters in central texas thrashing around this suv and washing out hundreds of homes. >> this was my wedding. and this is all i have. >> reporter: black hawks sent in to rescue the stranded. as thousands are forced to evacuate the worst flooding they have ever seen. at least five dead, many others still missing. >> you cannot candy-coat it. it's absolutely massive. >> reporter: just across the border, devastation from the tornado that tore through this small town, killing 13. slamming cars into homes. flipping this school bus. the severe weather stretching to the florida coast, where a beachgoer captured this video of a water spout coming ashore and launching a bounce house into the air in ft. lauderdale. parents watching helplessly. >> i was crying.

>> yeah, she was crying. >> i was crying. and i was like, oh, my god, oh my god, oh, my god, i can't believe this. >> reporter: bazi kanani, abc news, washington. people across the nation's midsection from the gulf coast to the great lakes will be staying in today. >> severe weather today will blanket nearly a third of the country. texas, though, will see some relief. let's get the latest from justin pofic from accuweather. good morning to you, justin. >> t.j. and marci, thanks and good morning. the worst of the worst weather occurring over the deep south and also the western tennessee valley. that's later on this afternoon. they get hard-hit cities like austin and houston and dallas and oklahoma city you're not going to be so much in that area. we're very concerned about the western tennessee valley for additional flash flooding and some severe weather. not a high risk for for tornadoes. but there will be likely damaging winds and large hail. spotty thunderstorms across the northeast. but it is going to be heating up. that's the big story here. later today and wednesday, real-feel temperatures into the

mid and upper 90s. and some of the worst of the weather back into the central plains late week. t.j. and marci, back to you. >> all right, justin, thank you. in florida, dangerous rip currents are surging and deadly. at least three people lost their lives to the waves along florida's coast over the weekend. lifeguards rescued hundreds more. those lifeguards report that beach conditions this memorial day weekend were some of the worst they have seen in two decades. rip current warnings are in effect again today. breaking news out of iraq this morning. the country has launched a new operation to retake western anbar province from the islamic state. isis militants now control most of anbar province. the new counteroffensive comes after the u.s. and its allies have reportedly carried out 35 air strikes targeting isis in iraq and syria over the last couple of days. the trial of a u.s. reporter in iran begins today behind closed doors. jason rezaian, who works for "the washington post" is charged with espionage.

only his lawyer will be allowed in the courtroom. his family and "the post" strongly criticize the decision to close the trial. it comes at a sensitive time. in u.s.-iran relations with the nuclear agreement deadlines fast approaching. a new mexico police officer has died after being shot in rio rancho. police are look for a man and a woman in connection with a shooting. one witness heard sirens heard several gunshots the officer on the ground and someone trying to perform cpr. the name of the officer has not been released. the city of cleveland has reached a settlement with the justice department over a pattern of excessive force and civil rights violations by police. it's expected to be announced as early as today. just days after officer michael brelo was cleared in the deaths of a black couple, saying he fired 15 shots into their car because he feared for his life. and the police shooting death of

a 12-year-old cleveland boy with a toy gun is still under investigation. two military fighter jets scrambled yesterday. escorting an in-bound air france flight to new york's kennedy airport after a bomb threat. an anonymous threat was phoned in warning of either a bomb or a chemical weapon. it was one of six games threatened yesterday. three at jfk, two at newark one at boston's logan airport. nothing was found on any of the planes. authorities say phone threats happen all the time. but the high number yesterday was unusual. investigators in washington, d.c., are looking for more suspects in the so-called mansion murder case. one suspect is already in custody. but prosecutors say the victim's blue porsche was seen being driven by a black male with short, well-groomed hair who was wearing a neon lime green construction vest. similar vests were found in the family's garage. investigators are probing the charred remains of the family's house. first lady michelle obama spent part of her memorial day delivering a commencement speech at oberlin college in ohio.

these pictures coming to us this morning as a volcano on top of the galapagos islands erupts for the first time in three decades. no threat to the people there. the volcano is far from populated areas. but a heck of a sight. something we haven't seen for quite some time. to the california coast now. and the company that owns the pipeline that ruptured says it plans to remove the broken pipe today. when it's removed, it will be examined to see why it ruptured in the first place. the company is downgrading the amount of oil that leaked. now saying it may have been up

to 101,000 gallons of oil. about 4,000 gallons less than they thought. word is patriots' quarterback tom brady's appeal of his four-game deflategate suspension will not be heard by tomorrow. that's the ten-day deadline called for in the nfl players' labor deal. however, the players' union and the league can agree to delay the hearing. nfl commissioner roger goodell is not recusing himself from hearing brady's appeal. even though he's expected to be called as a witness. america's media landscape could be in for a big shift. st. louis-based charter communications has reportedly struck a deal to buy time warner cable for about $55 billion in cash and stock. its second attempt after comcast's failed bid. the combined company would be the nation's second largest cable tv provider behind comcast. the deal is likely to face scrutiny by the fcc. and the justice department. a memorial day controversy for the company pacsun. it focuses on a simple t-shirt. there it is. you notice something about that.
