with live breaking news. and that breaking news is in the east bay. good afternoon. i'm dan ashley. larry beil is on assignment and will join us in just a bit. >> i'm ama daetz. a hostage situation in antioch has just ended and take a look at sky 7 hd as it was over the scene a half hour ago a hostage walked out of the arco station with his hands up. >> a man who was holding him surrenders. you see s.w.a.t. gear and full tactical gear rushed in and took him into custody this star s.t.a.r.t. started with a carjacking. >> contra loma boulevard just south of highway 4. david louie was directly across from the arco and could see it as everything was happening.

>> he is live now with the latest with this. what a scene this was, david. >> reporter: indeed, ama and dan. i'm standing still in the same place we've been all afternoon right across from the arco gas station where this hostage drama has been unfold read for a four-hour timeframe. you can see the highway patrol blocking some of the streets and local police inside the building continuing to look for clues as to what happened there and there are also vehicles there that were still trapped and getting gasoline at the time. let's turn back to 11:30 this morning and sky 7 hd was overhead as the man was trying to allude police in the burgundy car and the highway patrol tried to help setting up a spike strip. contra loma boulevard, it crashed into a street-level barrier. the suspect tried to force his way into two cars on the off-ramp pointing to what one driver described as a 357

revolver. the driver described the suspect as desperate to get away. >> i was coming off exits on the freeway and stopped at the stop light and the guy ran up to the car with the gunpointed at me shaking, trying to get in the door and all i did was lay down in the street and just floated and came up the street, and i heard a gun shot and then i heard two more, i think it was, and that was it, man. i just thank god i'm alive. >> he looked very desperate. he looked like whoever that let him in he was going to get in that car and he was either going to kill them take the car or whatever he needed to do to get away. >> now the suspect ran over to this arco gas station when he wasn't able to commandeer a vehicle. he got inside holding two people hostage for about three hours and at about 2:30 or three hours into the ordeal, one of the hostages managed to drive up the service bay and escaped and he appeared to be disoriented at

first and not sure which way to run. a small armored carrier picked him up and took him to the safety of the antioch police department. >> we heard noises earlier of someone banging on a door trying to get out. police drove an armored vehicle close to the front door to check things out. it took another hour before the gunman and the second hostage apparently an arco station came out and police maintained a perimeter to keep the public and media from getting too close because the suspect was armed. >> as you look again at the gas station there. you see lots of vehicles parked there at the pumps and those people are hostages too. they're standing out here with me waiting to get back to their vehicles and it is a crime scene so they are not able to claim their cars back this afternoon and there's also a woman who also apparently ran into some of the shriveled spike strip and so she is being held here as well because she has a story to tell to antioch police. we'll continue to update this. our colleague alan wang is at

horrific foul that you saw monday night and when he crashed over trevor and hit the floor, the big concern was a possible concussion and they called it contusion and stepped into the nba's concussion protocol and they checked him out fine and he did return to the game. steph said this morning he's still feeling the effects of that fall and nothing that will stop him from taking the court tonight. >> my whole right side took the brunt of that force to my head, so basically like a bruise all of the way up and down your body. i want to think about tonight to stay out of the paint. i won't jump at any pump fakes. so i'll be more disciplined in that regard but other than that, stay aggressive and stay in attack mode and the offense and defense. there is one noticeable difference for steph tonight. he'll wear a sleeve on his right arm and elbow because of

along the coast and over the bay this evening and it will be partly cloudy tomorrow morning and by afternoon mostly sunny skies with a few high clouds and it will be warmer inland with the highs reaching just above 80 degrees in our inland areas and i'll give you a look at just how gusty it is in the bay area. >> a fire scorched seven acres. the fire was reported on club drive behind the ninth hole of the eagle ridge golf course. they dropped fire retardant chemicals and it took firefighters an hour and a half to get the fire under control. fire fighters in los gatos successfully knocked down fires near a housing development this morning. the flames began around 11:00 and sky 7 hd was live over the scene along highway 17 and crews spent the afternoon checking for hot spots and making sure the fire was fully out. >> sad to report the number of dead still rising tonight in

texas after days of heavy rain and devastating flooding. at least 15 people are confirmed dead so far and nine are still missing. thousands of homes have been doninged damaged by floodwater. brandy hit has the latest. >> reporter: the destructionv widespread around the blanco river and this is what you see, homes destroyed by the flooding as crews go door to door todd trying to find survivors. >> another round of storms is striking the heart of texas pushing water over the dam outside of dallas, at one point on the verge of failing as search and rescue teams now scour what's left of these homes along the blanco river where nine people are still missing. >> we have thousands of homes that are damaged. some totally lost. >> the latest victim 43-year-old michaela charba. she was swept away by floodwaters that later slammed into a bridge and broke into

pieces. >> in houston, entire freeways have been turned into rivers. >> it came up over the roof of some of the cars in probably about 45 minutes. yeah. it came up fast. it was -- it wasn't pretty. >> reporter: among the more than 500 calls for water rescues this one was caught on a cell phone. >> thei didn't want to see the lady drown. >> they saved a woman and her dog trapped in her car. >> they created a swath of tornados from texas all of the way to ohio. this twister tearing through a shopping center left behind a parking lot full of wreckage. >> another tornado was also spotted this afternoon just ten miles from this neighborhood already devastated by flooding and you can see the home behind me was ripped from its foundation by waters rising so high. up in the trees we found old vinyl records and this child's teddy bear. in wimberley, texas, brandy hit abc 7 news.

tonight. rap mogul shug knight is making headlines again this afternoon after telling deputies he was too sick to leave his jail cell. a judge moved his hearing to friday instead. knight passed out in court after hearing his bail would be $25 million. he got light headed. the 50-year-old is charged with murder and attempted murder following a hit and run that killed a man in southern california in january. part of an effort to cut back on obesity the city of davis first offered milk or water, not soda with kids' meals. the city council passed the ordinance last night that requires parents to specifically request soda for their kids. a quarter of fifth seventh and ninth grade students in davis are overweight or obese. a messaging service wildly popular with teenagers is now planning an ipo. snapchat founder and ceo evan spiegel told attendees of a conference in southern california yesterday that his start-up needs an ipo and he's

planning to do that. he would not provide details on the timing. snapchat was founded by three stanford university students in 2011 and is based in venice, california. time to turn to our weather. low clouds still hanging around and a little bit of wind. spencer christian is outside with the full accuweather forecast. >> i'm glad you mentioned that wind again and seconds ago a strong gust literally pushed me up against the rail, and i had to hold on. let's take a look at live doppler 7 hd. we have mostly sunny skies over the bay and inland. lots of clouds stacked up and low clouds at the coast. let's talk about those winds and we have gusts right now up to 29 miles per hour at fairfield. 28 at sfo. 24 san carlos and in hayward, 22 in livermore and the gusts here on the rooftop feel even stronger. as we move along here is the view of the east bay hills camera looking westward out over the bay. clouds will increase overnight and mainly low clouds and we'll see warmer days especially

inland thursday through saturday and it will turn cooler across the entire region on sunday. we might get more than just a cooldown on sunday. speaking of cool, how cool has the month of may been? we'll use san jose as our indicator, only the first two days of the month of may were warmer than average in san jose. for the next 24 consecutive days, san jose has experienced below-average temperatures and that has been the picture around virtually all of the bay area. it has been a cool month of may so far. here's a look at the satellite image showing two low pressure systems pushing inland as the weak ridge of high pressure moves ashore and its warming influence will not last too long and it will be the warming system that will get more than just a cooldown on sunday as we look at the forecast animation, you see areas of moisture approaching the bay area on sunday and we might see more drizzle or light showers on sunday. overnight, look for low clouds

after chasing morgan has reached a settlement with walmart that seriously injured morgan. the crash killed morgan's friend and seriously noninged morgan as well as his personal assistant. >> it slammed into a limo van taking morgan and the others home from the show. details of the settlement have not been released and the truck driver is facing state charges. the truck was traveling 20 miles per hour over the speed limit and the driver was awake for more than 24 consecutive hours before the crash. the movie "san andreas" opens tomorrow in earthquake country. >> it caused destruction from san francisco to los angeles. >> it did premiere last night in hollywood where the lead actor, dwayne johnson, "the rock" told

abc 7 news starts right now with live breaking news. and that braking news is in the east bay. the end of a hostage standoff in an arco gas station in antioch this afternoon. the suspect in a chp car chase was inside the food mart with hostages. officials do not believe anyone was hurt. the suspect is in custody. abc 7 news reporter david louie is on the scene and says the suspect exited highway 4 and

crashed into a barrier and tried to steal other cars at gunpoint. david is there right now and what can you tell us on the latest situation here, david? >> reporter: am a we can tell you we are still waiting to hear more details about who this suspect was or is. we know he's been described as in his late 30s and early 40s and has long hair. we have good video of him from sky 7 hd but beyond that we don't know what his motive was and we have heard some reports that he was escaping concord police and traveling eastbound on surface streets and he ended up on highway 4 and down here on l street in antioch. the scene has started to settle down and it was so tense this afternoon and it obviously is a confusing situation. >> sky 7 hd was on top of the unfolding action as police were trying to pursue this man but the highway patrol had spike strips to puncture the tire of his burr gunnedy car but the

chase warrant over and the man tried to commandeer a car on the off-ramp to continue his escape from police, but the gunman didn't succeed. we talked to the drivers of two cars he tried to carjack. >> he had the gunpointed at me and once he realized i wasn't playing he went around me. >> i just thank god i'm alive. >> was your door locked at the time? >> yes it was. >> he didn't try to force his way in. >> yes, he did. he did. he was behind me. >> that's what made me lock my door. >> two very lucky men. >> the gunmen then ran over to the arco gas station where customers were shocked to hear a gun shot coming from a chp officer's gun after the suspect brandished his weapon and he got inside and held two men hostage and one of them managed to escape three hours later and the suspect emerged with hands up and the remaining hostage was freed four hours later. so that much we know but we still don't know the motive. we don't know what precipitated

the chase and we don't know exactly why he decided to run into the gas station and take people hostage and we're continuing to cover this breaking news story. >> we are live in antioch, david louie, abc 7 news. >> crews are investigating an overnight fire in a vacant home in vallejo and broke out near calaveras at 1:00 this morning and the home had been yellow tagged meaning it was not safe to enter and it's at least the fifth fire in vallejo in three days. investigators say four of those fires may have been started by homeless people staying in vacant homes. >> the latest poll shows three in five california voters think governor brown is doing a good job. the governor's disapproval rating is 26%, the lowest it's been since just after he took office. the rating was highest in july 2012 when 42% of voters didn't think the governor was doing a good job. his approval rate is currently 58%. >> former senator rick santorum has made it official again. >> i am running for president of

[ laughter ] [ applause ] >> you're not going to see me turn white in the white house! >> the democratic presidential front-runner campaigned in south carolina, one of the early primary states. meantime a federal judge ordered the state department to resume the release of emails from clirpt's private account next month. the state department is still reviewing about 55,000 pages of clinton's emails from her time as secretary of state. republican presidential candidate carly fiorina also was in south carolina today. in fact, she showed up outside the hotel where clinton was speaking. fiorina mocked the democratic front-runner by pointedly assuring reporters she would take their questions. clinton has been criticized for avoiding reporters' questions at her events. >> the woman who sued a silicon valley firm for gender discrimination and lost says she has no regrets. >> she spoke about the loss against her former employer today during a conference in southern california.

>> when she sued, she said some people wouldn't talk to her or didn't want to be seen with her. she has until june 8th to appeal and says she hasn't decided yet if she will. a southern california mother is speaking out after her transgender son committed suicide as a result of social media. tyler prescott was born female, but identified as male. he was overcoming a two-year battle with depression, but on easter bullies began taggying him on the app kick and tyler tried to find hope after watching diane sawyer's interview with bruce jenner, but the bullying was too much. >> when you're a teenager slowly changing is not enough. the world is still really a tough place for them. >> tyler is at least the third transgender teen to commit suicide in the san diego area since march. you may see more people biking across the bay area. transportation officials announced a new deal that would increase the number of bikes in

poughkeepsie this morning. this is in new york, a school bus flipped over during a violent crash. the accident in a town 70 miles north of new york city took place when the driver of a blue car tried to avoid rear ending a stopped minivan. 16 people were injured and at least nine of them were children. they are all going to be okay. the driver of one of the cars suffered serious injuries. >> that's too bad. >> it is. one last time we want to update the weather forecast out there. >> that's right. spencer christian is here with our accuweather update. spencer? >> reporter: it's getting breezier by the moment. here's a look at live doppler 7 hd and skies remain mostly clear

over the bay and inland areas and we do have low clouds stacking up at the coastline and let's move over into the central parts of the country where violent storms continue to rumble. we have severe thunderstorms in northern alabama and flash flood watches and tornado watches over a good portion of the plains and the green area indicates flash flood watches over parts of kansas oklahoma and texas and the yellow area indicates tornado watches and the southwestern corner of nebraska most of western kansas and western oklahoma and the texas panhandle and those areas of the country continue to receive severe weather and tomorrow it looks like another day of stormy weather in the southern plains and along the gulf coast and northern florida. we'll see showers in the intermountain region of the northwest and kansas and nebraska, and across the state of california tomorrow, look for hot weather and highs will reach 90 degrees in chico and 92 in fresno and a high of 101

get to park at meters without paying? >> i have to tell you, this is very very controversial. some cities in california are beginning to investigate to ask the state should we change this so they get the parking spot but they have to pay for it? if you look back at how this law came into being it makes a lot of sense because a lot of people parking in those special zones when they get out of their car they can't reach the meter, or if they can reach the meter because not all of the meters are next to the car it's three blocks away. you know that. >> there are so many issues around this. right now they want to leave it the way it is, but they are looking at restricting the amount of cards that are out there making sure that only those people who truly need it get the card. >> rebecca b. asked via facebook, i received a robocall stating your debit card has been locked. press 1 and you will be transferred to our security department. who do i report a call like this? >> it needs to be reported. there is no security department and by the way, as soon as you

the so-called free-range parents of maryland are hoping they're in the clear. authorities in silver spring cleared daniel of any wrongdoing. the couple was accused of child neglect for letting their 10-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter walk home from a local park unsupervised. the case set off a debate nationwide on parental rights. >> our rights were violated and the constitution clearly protects parents' rights to raise their kids the way they see fit. >> they aren't completely in the clear just yet. charges are still pending after the kids were picked up a second time in april and helped provide hours. the parents are cautiously optimistic, but authorities will decide in their favor again. abc 7 news at 4:00 continues. up next, the child chef from the south bay getting ready to take on the world of cooking and the winning recipe putting her in the national spotlight. now here's cheryl with a look at what we'll have for you at 5:00. >> thanks dana ama. >> coming up next a text that

put up a fight. >> the guy turned around and looked at me pointing the gun at me and i immediately locked my door and rolled up my window and as he came towards me i just punched it and went at it. >> thanks for joining us. i'm cheryl jennings. >> i'm dan ashley. late this afternoon the gunman came out with his hands up and police had their guns drawn and officers dragged him out of the gas station garage and cuffed him. >> all of this went down at an arco station just off of highway 4 in antioch. david louie watched all of this develop and he joins us now from antioch. david? >> reporter: cheryl and dan, this was a dramatic hostage situation lasting all afternoon. we are now learning about the suspect and why police were chasing after him and he had apparently stolen two vehicles in concord and they pursued him on surface streets and eventually got on to highway 4 and dropped down to l street and still cordoned off by police. here is video of that suspect giving himself up four hours after this incident all began.

hands up in the air the second of two hostages were freed at the same time. the other hostage was released after 2:30 after he crawled out of a service bay roll-up door. a small armored vehicle picked him up and took him to safety. >> none of the hostages were injured and we talked to a woman who was caught up in the police chase and shexd explains what she saw and what happened to her and her vehicle. >> we'r%hnn the fast lane. all of a sudden this car kind of zooms and cut in front of me really quick. something was dragging alongside of him and i ran over whatever it was and it kind of popped off. >> reporter: it turned out she must have dragged some of the spike strip in her car and brought it down to contra loma boulevard. the police right now in antioch are doing what they call a debrief. they are trying to gather all of the evidence and the details of what happened this afternoon because multiple agencies were involved it's going to
