broadcast center this is abc 7 news. good afternoon and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm larry beil. sky 7 hd shows us the international flight of sfo which was the target of a bomb threat. five u.s. flights that had authorities on alert. abc 7 news reporter sergio quintana is live at fso with the story. sergio? >> based on all of the people who we talked to who were both waiting for loved ones aboard that plane and passengers aboard that plane, they didn't know that this was one of the five planes that had been threatened in this morning's bomb scare. the plane came into the terminal as usual a security team went aboard after all the passengers got off and they loaded off their last batch of passengers

and that flight took off back to korea on schedule. >> korean airlines flight 423 landed safely at san francisco international. passengers onboard said the flight was mostly unevent frl. >> how was the flight here? >> the flight here? >> yeah. >> it was okay. >> nothing eventful and nobody said anything on the plane? >> no. >> one passenger said he did notice something odd as he left the plane. >> i saw some security at the gate wondering what that was. >> three guys looked like they were looking for something. >> we saw dogs at the airport when we arrived and this threat was not credible and had no effect on flight operations. in philadelphia authorities there responded to a threat by parking the u.s. airways plane away from the airport terminal. >> a decision was made in an abundance of caution to remove the plane and very carefully

remove the passengers and put them on busses. >> while it was on the tarmac philadelphia police, k-9s and the bomb squad swept the plane and found it to be safe. three other flights that were included in this threat all landed safely and without incident. this is the second time a series of bomb threats were made against u.s. flights in the last week. none have been credible. in san francisco, sergio quintana, abc 7 news. police in boston today shot and killed a man being watched by a terrorism task force with ties to the bay area. >> authorities confronted usaama rahim this morning in a parking lot. they said they shot him because he pulled out a military-style knife and refused to put it down. >> we kept retreating, verbally giving commands to drop the weapon, drop the weapon and at some point the individual's proximity came close that the officers were in danger. >> authorities say rahim may have been inspired by isis. this is a video of the

confrontation and officials will investigate whether the officers' use of deadly force was necessary. his brother ibrahim is an imam at a mosque in oakland. coming up at 5:00, abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez will have reaction from people who play at the open mosque regularly. >> turning to weather now. a little bit more sun today. spencer christian is here with the accuweather update. >> ama and larry we have a bright sunny day right now and there are a few clouds at the coast and here's live doppler 7 hd showing you crystal clear skies over the bay area and patches of low clouds are assembling at portions of the coastline and here's a view of the rooftop and a few wispy clouds above and 64 degrees in oak landz and 68 in san carlos and san jose. 74 morgan hill and 60 degrees at half moon bay. here's a lovely view looking westward in the east bay hills camera and you can see the outline of a few low clouds and it's 80 degrees and -- that was fast. i hit the button too soon.

we have lots of 70s in the inland and east bay locations and blue skies over the golden gate and here is our first forecast and we'll see patchy low clouds tonight and it will be breezy and overnight lows ranging from oh into the upper 40s to mid-50s as you see lingering low clouds in the morning and mild from the coast inland and we'll see highs in the upper 50s to 60 at the coast and we'll see some lower 70s to mid-70s around the bay and up to 80 degrees in the inland locations and the warming trend is coming our way and some drizzle and i'll tell you about that later. larry and ama. >> i want to take you live to sky 7 hd as the cleveland cavaliers have just arrived at sfo getting set for game one against the golden state warriors on thursday at oracle arena. the cavs lebron james was saying yesterday the week-long wait has been like agony and they couldn't wait to finally land here and get started. both teams have had quite a

layoff. lebron hoping to lead the cavaliers to the first-ever nba championship. the last sports title of any kind one in cleveland was captured by the browns in 1964. that was pre-super bowl so it has been a long long time. of course, the warriors have not been in the finals since the 1974-75 season. it's been quite a while for them as well. >> all-star guard clay thompson is good to go during game one of the nba final. the team announced that thompson completed the nba's concussion protocol testing and was cleared to play on thursday night against the caves and thompson suffered a concussion when he took a knee to the head in the western conference finals on wednesday. >> i'll be really ready to go for thursday. >> the warriors should be at full strength top to bottom back up center maurice spates is expected to play after suffering

a calf sprain in round two of the playoffs and didn't play at all in the rockets series. >> abc 7 is the only place where you can see the warriors in the finals. live coverage begins in just two days. game one in oracle arena and games three and four back in cleveland and game five, if necessary, returns to oracle in the best of seven series. >> the new york times reports fifa's president is among those being investigated by u.s. officials as part of the corruption scandal in world soccer. >> that report comes hours after longtime president sepp blatter announced his resignation. karen travers with the very latest. >> a bombshell announcement has rocked international soccer. >> translator: i would put a disposal my assumption. >> reporter: in the press conference sepp blatter said he's stepping down. >> translator: although the members of fifa have given me a

new mandate and re-elected me president this mandate does not seem to be supported by everybody in the world of football. blatter was reelected to the fifth term just off friday. two days after a massive corruption scandal at the top of soccer's governing body. dramatic arrests in switzerland, indictments in new york. 14 of the most powerful officials in soccer accused of taking more than $150 million in bribes. >> the winner is qatar! >> reporter: the investigation began after the u.s. narrowly lost the 2022 world cup to qatar. despite allegations of bribery and concerns about holding soccer's premiere event in the arabian desert heat, he's the first to tell abc news he's being investigated by the fbi.

>> fifa needs a profound restructuring and he's not going away immediately. the special lechelections to replace him won't take place until december, the earliest. karen travers, abc, washington. the man suspected for stealing a bmw and driving through a win window will appear in court tomorrow. he's facing two felony hit and run and vandalism. he stole the car from howard street early yesterday morning and the first car he tried to take didn't fit through the door and he tried another car and sped through union square and crashed through a limo on mason and geary. the driver of the limo was not hurt. investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that destroyed a multimillion dollar home outside of los gatos. firefighters responded to the blaze this morning. five people inside got out safely just before the second-story floor collapsed. the residents who were artists say it wasn't the smoke alarms that woke them up but the sound of spray paint cans exploding.

now to sky 7 hd showing us the tragic scene of a small plane crash that killed the pilot and started a fire in the east bay. federal investigators are at the scene looking for answers. >> this happened last night three miles northeast of the livermore airport. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield has the story from the crash scene. >> reporter: the pilot of the pa-22 that crashed at livermore at 9:00 last night raid yod the tower right before the accident to report problems. >> i have a slight control problem. i'm going to circle here and check it out and head back to the pattern. >> reporter: he crashed in a field about three miles away from the livermore airport. witnesses posted pictures of the burning wreckage on social media. authorities say the pilot was killed. he was the only one onboard. >> the reaction when something like this happens is extremely sad and we question ourselves, how did this happen. >> the general manager at the airport said the crash would likely have pilots doing more

thorough pre-flight checks each though he says they are all very safety conscious. the airport is helping in the investigation and is also in mourning. >> it's a close-knit community, as you can imagine and we're close to the airport and we know each other. it really is extremely sad. it's like a family member was taken from us. >> federal authorities are in charge of the investigation and are here gathering evidence. they planned to move the wreckage to a storage facility where they can examine it. local emergency responders are also lending support. >> we've maintained the scene all night with deputies to make sure that it's a crime scene and you don't want to make -- you want to make sure that no one enters into your scene and so now the faa and ntsb will take over. >> local firefighters also had to put out that grass fire. federal officials tell us it could take a few weeks before they are able to release the results of their investigation.

for violating an emergency protective order. the chicago bears released mcdonald's last week. >> in other news this afternoon united airlines grounded 150 flights today because of a computer glitch. united released little information about the problem saying only that it began delaying flights at 6:00 pacific time to ensure aircraft departed with proper dispatching information. it lasted about 40 minutes. google is set to close its gender and racial gap not showing much progress. a new report by the company shows women made slight progress in technical roles at google since last year. the number of latino and african-american employees went unchanged. 70% of google employees are men. most employees are white and 60% asian and 31% latinos made up just 3% of the workforce and african-americans 2%. we are now learning more about bruce jenner's transgender transformation to caitlyn including what it was like to go

melendez is talking to worshippers at the mosque of rahim's brother in oakland and she'll have more at 5:00. game one of the nba finals is just two days away and oracle arena is being transformed into finals territory. abc 7 news wayne freedman tweeted this of the new seat covers and he will take us inside oracle coming up at 5:00. a showdown is under way at san francisco's city hall and one of the more controversial housing proposals in recent years is being debated. new developments in the mission. abc 7 news reporter carolyn tyler is live at city hall with more. carolyn? >> am a the proposal that's being debated here at city hall tonight is what's called an emergency measure and instead of the simple majority that's usually needed it will take the approval of nine out of the 11 supervisors to pass it. the mission district is ground zero for san francisco's housing affordability crisis. once heavily latino it's

gentrified. >> they're building condos not for the people of the mission. they're building it for you guys! the techie, the hipsters. that's bull! >> rafael is supporting a freeze on market rate housing construction. a 45-day moratorium that could expand up to two years. the proposal is sponsored by supervisor david campos. he says it would give the city time to come up with a plan to buy land in the mission for affordable housing. >> if we don't act now, by the time we get around to doing something, the land that's available will be gone and then what happens to this neighborhood. >> the moratorium is not going to do a thing to give us more housing, affordable or otherwise in san francisco. >> supervisor scott wiener is a opposed to a building halt saying it would be disastrous for the city. >> the proposed moratorium would

not prevent one eviction from taking place. it would not produce one new affordable housing unit. >> a sign of just how controversial this proposal is, a packed city hall and tempers rising among those who feel priced out of san francisco. and that debate is expected long into the evening. city hall is jam-packed tonight with members of the public on both sides of the issue anxious to weigh in. live at san francisco's city hall carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. they're raising the california's spoking age. senators passed a measure that increases the smoking age from 18 to 21 and it now moves over sort assembly. nine in ten smokers take up the habit by the age of 18. tobacco companies are expected to lobby hard to defeat the bill in the assembly. parents are outraged this afternoon over an east bay school district plan to change

at what age kids can attend two of its elementary schools to solve an overenrollment problem in newark. they're expected to vote to make bunker kindergarten through second grade. third through sixth graders would attend milani elementary. parents say the school district did not notify them when they were considering such a major change. >> it's been the lack of transparency that's been horrible for us parents and most parents don't even know. >> they approved the switch without a public debate last month and that angered a lot of parents. the school plans to revote tonight at 6:00 and listen to parents' concerns. a petition drive is under way to slow traffic in antioch following a deadly accident. hudson is behind the drive to install speed bumps and his 47-year-old son tim was killed last month by a hit and run driver doing doughnuts in the middle of the road. after the accident someone took matters into their own hands and installed a speed bump, but a

city crew removed it. you see the hole where the bump was installed and he didn't like when it happened. it was during his son's funeral. >> they must have had the house staked out because the kids across the street they said we were gone like, four minutes and they all showed up at 1:00. so they were just waiting for us to leave. they knew where we were going. >> the petition also demands then of the city's mayor. a suspect has been arrested for the fatal hit and run. >> amtrak is pledging to install safety technology that might have prevented last night's deadly train derailment in philadelphia. joseph told them amtrak is responsible for the incident and its cob its consequences. 200 injured when the train jumped the tracks and it called the accident surprising because of the system's safety record. no other place in the country is the comparable volume and the

fatal accident on the northeast corridor occurred 28 years ago. >> a preliminary national transportation safety board report released today confirms that the train entered the 50 mile-an-hour curve at 106 miles an hour and that the engineer braked seconds before the wreck. a new abc news washington post poll says hillary clinton's favorability rating dropped to an all-time low. 49% gave her an unfavorable rating. clinton's favorable rating has plummeted by 22 points from 67% during her tenure as secretary of state. clinton still has a commanding lead, though, against democratic rivals. on the republican side, wisconsin governor scott walker and kentucky senator rand paul topped the list of 11% and former florida governor jeb bush and senator marco rubio of florida are at 10% each. bush has yet to formally declare

his candidacy and no other republican candidate scored at double digits. >> funeral services for beau biden will take place in delaware. the vice president's son died on saturday of brain cancer. president obama is planning to deliver a eulogy. beau biden was planning to run for delaware governor as serving two terms as state attorney general and he was also an iraq war veteran and father of two. beau biden was 46 years old. mr. obama honored two deceased world war i veterans with medals of honor. army private hencery johnson and army sergeant william shamin's valor has long been ignored. the pair both risked their lives to help fellow soldiers avoid capture and loved once accepted the award on his behalf and the new york national guard accepted the medal for private johnson. new developments today in the huge air bag recall. up next 7 on your side's michael finney will have the federal

near the coast there. let's travel down to ground level where tonight at at&t park the giants take on the pirates again and time for payback. game time 7:15 and it will be partly cloudy breezy and cool at the start of the game and winds out of the west at 10 to 20 miles per hour and temperature in the upper 50s. look for a few showers over the intermountain regions of the northwest. we'll see thunderstorms reaching from the upper mississippi valley and northern minnesota down to about st. louis area. along the atlantic coast and mid atlantic regions southward and we'll see showers and thunderstorms and it will be warm across the southern tier states and look for a high of 102 in phoenix tomorrow and across the state of california and it will be warm chico and sacramento and the highs there in the 80s and palm springs with a high of 96 and here in the bay area and after a few lingering morning clouds and we'll have hazy and sunshiny afternoon and mid and upper 60s around the bay

to upper 70s near 80 in landz and we have a warming trend coming our way and i'll tell you about that on abc 7 news at ñi 5:00. larry and ama? >> thank you spencer. a water main break in southern california shot water hundreds ever feet in the air today and we'll see the massive jet of water just north of los angeles and took officials some time to shut off that water and no word yet on what caused that break. we're all trying to save water during the drought even if that means the green lawn is now brown. abc 7 news reporter bernard shows us how some are going green without using sprinklers. >> the grass is always greener at kelly rivera's house even during the drought. >> i came home to a green lawn. kelly was on a homeowner. her lawn was on the last blade and then i tell them i just painted it. what did they say? >> what? >> it might be the newest trend during the drought. lawn painting.

34 million cars in all may have had the faulty takata air bags. as 7 on your side's michael finney reports, today takata had a surprising admission. >> reporter: it took a while for them to acknowledge it but takata is now clear that the danger posed by their air bags is real and the outcome can be deadly. >> the recall involving 34 million takata air bags are linked to at least six deathses and more than 100 injuries and all 11 automakers including honda, ford mitsubishi bmw and chrysler now identifying which of their cars carry the potentially defective air bag inflators. the faulty parts could rupture when deployed sending shrapnel through the bag into occupants of the vehicles. the questions remain. the full list of all cars are still unavailable and answers as to how this can be prevented. still unclear. >> every morning i fear i am

april of 2013. now that mandatory cuts are in effect. david louie takes a look at two cities feeling the heat. david? >> reporter: cheryl the city of millbrae is not convinced that those are correct saying that this city saved nothing and did nor did it increase any of its water use of april of this year compared to two years ago. now that its goal is 16% and if it doesn't make that goal then it's going to be facing fines. millbrae thought it was conserving water and in fact an analysis presented to the city council showed a 2.7% decrease but the state water resources board says millbrae's rate was 0%. >> do you think it is getting across to millbrae's resident. >> we're undecided. >> we think we can do it but we're not sure we're going to. >> millbrae operates its own water department serving 22,000
