good evening. thank you for joining us. we begin tonight with the duggar family facing harsh public barb backlash following allegations of sexual abuse involving their then teenager son. the star of the "19 kids and counting," say two of their own daughters were alleged victims. tonight they are speaking out. >> josh has done some very bad things and he's -- he's very sorry. >> tonight, the duggar family speaking out for the first time about the secret that's haunted their family for more than a decade. >> he keeps crying and he had just turned 14 and he said that he had actually improperly touched some of our daughters.

>> reporter: jim bob and michelle sitting down with fox news megyn kelly about their oldest son josh duggar, now 27 say he confessed about inappropriate sexual contact with as many as five under aged girls including two young sisters. >> he was still a kid and still a juvenile. he wasn't an adult. this was not rape or anything like that. this was like touching somebody over their clothes. a couple of instances where he touched them under their clothes but it was like a few seconds. >> reporter: the parents stressing tonight the touching was improper but their daughters were either asleep or didn't understand they were being molested. >> they weren't even aware. it was like -- it wasn't to them -- they probably didn't understand it was improper touch. >> reporter: the disturbing details in sharp contrast to the family's squeaky clean image. >> this is the story of my family. we're the duggars. >> they have been portrayed on

their show "19 kids and counting" as a conservative christian family who played and prayed together. >> the ray of hope that josh told us and his heart was still soft. >> reporter: the latest in a bombshell scandal that broke last week when "in touch" magazine released the first of two leaked police reports that say that josh was investigated but never charged for multiple sex offenses. the duggars say they are victims because the reports were unlawfully leaked. >> it has been an unprecedented attack on our family. >> stepping forward defending their brother. >> they can't do this to us. >> the system was set up to protect kids, it's greatly failed. >> reporter: when the scandal broke, josh duggar resigned from the family research council where he espoused political ideals. >> i believe every child deserves a mother and father. i'm sure grateful for mine.

>> reporter: possibly marking the end of what looked to be a promising career in politics where he touted his image as a loving his banld and soon to be father of four. during his highly watched wedding in 2008 the couple waiting until they said "i do" to kiss for the first time. four years ago, i interviewed josh and anna at the texas home schooling conference where they met. >> there are many definitions of courtship. for us, it meant really choosing purity, choosing to wait for a lot of things that people would take for granted. our first kiss was on our wedding day. >> reporter: wow, okay then. >> that's what it meant for us. >> reporter: i spoke to jim bob as he was preparing to give away jill in marriage. >> giving away your son is nothing like giving away your daughter. the guy is the protector over the girl. to give your daughter away to a guy, you have to be careful. >> probably a bigger lump in your throat, dad.

>> it really is. >> it's hard. every time he's talk aing he'll tear up. >> reporter: tonight, we learned jill was one of the daughters victimized. >> what makes a case like this complicated is that you are talking about a child allegedly moll lestic other children. those cases always get really difficult f. the authorities investigated this earlier, the parents could have been charged, as well. >> reporter: the statute of limitations had expired. no charges were ever filed. they could have been charged for failing to report this in a timely fashion. that's a felony in the state of arkansas. and they could have faced the possibility of up to six years behind bars. >> reporter: josh duggar himself did not sit down for an interview and only released this statement last week on twitter and facebook. i acted inexcusably for which i'm extremely sorry and deeply regret. i hurt others including my family and close friends. >> i treat a lot of people who

have been molested who have actually molested and nobody in the family ever reported it. these are health wealthy families a whole range of families that would know or should know to make a report and it never happens. that's why these things live in secrecy for so long. the fact that the duggars actually did something, reported it stopped it tried to make an intervention is really unusual. but it is unusual in a positive way. >> reporter: dr. robbie ludwig says the family environment may have played a role. >> if you live in an environment where you are an adolescent and you are somehow taught or led to believe that your sexual impulses are bad or an a mallistic, what do you do with those impulses? i think that's what happened with josh. he was 14. he probably had a lot of sexual curiosity impulses. what happened is not okay under any circumstances. but i think there are reasons we

♪ you are about to meet a woman who survived a nightmare scenario. her car hit by lightning while she was driving. conventional wisdom says take shelter during stormy weather but there could be dangers inside of your ride. with summer storm season upon us what should you do? here's abc's gio benitez. >> i can't get out of my car. >> reporter: tonight shattered glass, burned steel and a frantic 911 call. >> i was doing 45 and all of a sudden my air bags just went off. i can't, i don't know if my car

got hit by lightning. i don't know what happened sglit was a light bright light. the car lit up. >> reporter: sheena easterday was driving through a severe thunderstorm in st. petersburg florida, when all of a sudden her car shook. >> i kept hitting the locks but it wouldn't work. the car was smoky from the air bags i guess. makes me not want to drive in the rain ever again. >> reporter: a lightning bolt struck in front of the car. you can see the jarring force the lightning strike can have on a moving vehicle. look as this pickup is jolted after taking a direct hit. cars are designed to divert lightning around the shell of the car and down to the ground. while many think that rubber car tires protect against lightning strikes, experts say it is a myth. lightning can melt electrical systems and in some cases cause the car to burst in to flames and they say it is one of many. lightning is unpredictable and can strike a bolt through conventional wisdom. i saw the power of lightning

firsthand. covering storms in alabama. >> this is the same storm in tuscaloosa. >> lightning does not strike only when it is raining. it can strike quite far from the storm. lightning can travel through clear skies and actually strike with blue sky overhead. >> reporter: dow how do you protect yourself when you are on the road? first if you are in the car during a storm, pull over on the side of the road and wait the storm out. second lightning researcher joseph dwyer said don't touch anything electrical that can connect you to the outside elements. >> don't want to fiddle with the radio, playing with the windows. in fact it's best not to touch anything. >> reporter: thirdly if you can get in a building do so. even being indoors doesn't guarantee your safety. teresa celeste from upstate new york told our ginger zee how lightning entered through her ceiling and struck her on her couch while getting a foot rub from her mother. >> i was sitting here like this and it was thundering and lightning and one strike in the

backyard and i said, that is so close. >> you saw it? >> i saw that lightning and then i heard the sound. i went like this and my mother felt the jolt. >> right through your hands. >> i felt it. >> she felt it. i don't remember feeling anything. i still can't to this day believe that i was hit by lightning sitting on my couch. >> reporter: when it comes to myths, here's another one. the old saying lightning doesn't strike twice, that's not true. every commercial plane on average gets hit by lightning once a year. this boeing 757 had its nose ripped open after struck by lightning midair. >> shook violently for a half second. >> reporter: new york's empire state building gets struck by lightning about 25 times a year. one world trade center, the tallest building in the country was struck last week. >> starts up in the thunderstorm and as it comes to the ground it's looking for something to strike. there's no reason it couldn't

strike the same tree twice or the same area twice. >> reporter: multiple strikes are not just limited to planes and buildings. it can happen to people too. bob edwards was hit three times sglit felt like somebody hit me in the chest with a sledgehammer. >> reporter: for the unlucky folks that get struck and your chances are one in 12,000 in your lifetime, chances are you will survive. 90% of those hit live to tell the tale. >> i don't have any lives to spare. i used all nine of them i think. >> reporter: sebastian, just 7 years old was hit with lightning standing next to a bay window. >> we heard this big koosh and i could see my son on the ground and his foot was smoking. >> reporter: if you are struck by lightning it can be physically incapacitating. >> when someone is struck by lightning the currents flow through their body. the currents can reach 30,000

amps. as the current flows the voltage between your feet and head rises to the point where you spark across the surface of your body. >> reporter: others who survive say the effects are long lasting. >> the lower legs there's no muscle left in them. they will not rebuild. i have been working out with a trainer every week for 14 years and they just won't rebuild. >> reporter: michael utley was hit by lightning playing in a golf tournament. >> heard the loudest bang of my life. as soon as that happened we turned around an mike was on the green, scorched, his shoes blown off and he was unconscious, smokin'. >> reporter: some of the damage may not have been seen. >> if you have a laptop and spilled a coca-cola on it. you can clean it up. the laptop would look the same but i don't think it would run the same. >> reporter: to make sure it doesn't happen to you, dwyer stresses being indoors is the safest place to be. >> don't be next to a win doerks
