driving skills are almost as important as surgical skills. amy hollyfield is live at the hospital. >> reporter: that's true eric this happens at two different campuses. cpmc, and ucsf, all in san francisco. here's the man who started it all. they provided this video. you can see the donor. the recipient of his kidney had a relative willing to donate, but wasn't a match, was willing to give to a stranger, et cetera, et cetera. in this case it is repeated nine times, 18 surgeries including five husband, wife teams. doctors hope it inspires future donors. >> healthy person giving up a kidney is not going to hurt their health, not going to shorten their life span. it is a very safe thing. >> reporter: couriers are an

important part taking kidneys from one hospital to another with a package. ten surgeries down eight to go. they think this is one of the first single city transplant coordinations in a six hour period. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. 4:35. two federal grants that would have cleared rape kit testing backlog in san francisco have been lost. the i team first reported on this backlog in 2013. the police department refused to participate in grants worth $2 million each. the police chief says funding was too restrictive. it would only pay to clear kits past the statute of limitations. >> we don't want to spend resources on things that can't be prosecuted at the expense of things that can be prosecuted. >> there are about 1100 rape kits from 2003 across the area

sitting in police storage rooms untested. 4:36. rain and lightning sweep across northern california. despite the drought may be a curse rather than a blessing. officials with cal fire say lightning strikes are causing a number of fires in eldorado county. there's concern more could be on the way as things dry out in the days ahead. cal fire says there were more than 500 lightning strikes over six hours yesterday. the agency warns even though there's been some wet weather in the sierra, rain is having little impact on fire danger. >> a lot of ones we see now are growing immediately, due to this long four year drought we have been fighting against. >> cal fire warns lightning strikes can set small fires that smolder underground for days or weeks, and flare up as temperatures go up. 4:36. what is that i
