racing fan, ron, is right there at belmont park just outside of new york city. a lot of people think this horse has a real shot at becoming the first triple crown winner in 37 years. >> you've heard that before. but you know. it's raining. it's been pouring rain. it will be a sloppy track. that is racetrack expression for a soft, muddy track. and one thing we know. american pharoah can win in these conditions. similar conditions when he won just three weeks ago, the preakness. one more thing in favor of american pharoah. just possibly being the next triple crown winner. it's been a long time. >> it's been a long time. can he break the streak? that's the big question. ron, much more from you coming up in the show. but, we lead with the extreme weather. 30 million americans in the cross hair this morning. >> look at this reported tornado in colorado. and there may be more twisters with this weather system on the move. >> we begin with neal karlinsky who is in colorado. neal, good morning. >> reporter: dan, good morning.

they're still cleaning up from the storms that blew through the other day. take a look at the force. this was the garage of this home. that was the entire front that's gone. look at the bricks over here of the chimney that was just tossed down there. overnight, more severe weather blew through the region again. overnight, a series of vicious storms tearing through nevada. hail pounding this driver outside of reno. >> that right there is golf ball-sized hail. >> reporter: just moments before a confirmed ef-1 tornado touches down. tossing trees across the highway. >> my word. >> reporter: as he drives straight through. in colorado, hail and high winds battering the state. and torrential rains washing out this denver interstate. stranding the drivers unable to push through the rising waters. reported tornadoes and violent bursts of lightning marking the third night of severe weather for residents still picking up the pieces after tornadoes touched down on thursday, destroying homes.

>> this is something like from hell. >> reporter: and this morning, denver police confirming that weather played a role in this sinkhole that swallowed a police car whole friday morning. in the ground. >> yeah. >> reporter: were you worried? you said you talked about -- >> oh, yeah, i was freaked out about that. i didn't know if the car would sink more or if the water would get any deeper. and start coming into the patrol car. >> reporter: he was a little banged up. otherwise doing just fine. in fact no severe injuries from any of the damage out here. a lot of close calls, though. dan and paula? >> a lot of close calls. thank you, neal. rob is tracking the weather. rob, you say that denver is going to get a break. but the severe weather is on the move. >> now the weather pattern is going to shift things to the east. you see the storms out of the inner mountain west. the severe threat more toward eastern nebraska, in through iowa today. and then even further to the east as we go tomorrow.

toward maybe st. louis. the southern part of chicago, getting into cincinnati as well. these storms do have a tremendous amount of rain with them as well. flash flood watches in kansas city. boy, you're going to get it again today. as thunderstorms roll in through that state. speaking of rain, we're watching hurricane blanca, which has reintensified to a category 3 storm this morning. winds up to 120 miles an hour. this and what's left of andres has been impacting the desert southwest. we'll talk more about that later in the program. back to you guys. >> all right, rob. it was a horrifying scene at the baseball game at fenway park last night. a woman was struck by a large piece of a baseball bat and seriously injured. abc's phillip mena joining us in studio with more. good morning, phillip. scary scene. >> absolutely. good morning, paula. brett lawrie, the player whose bat went flying into the stands telling reporters after the game he hopes that woman will be okay. this morning, boston police are calling her condition life-threatening. >> as this is a broken bat grounder. bat goes flying into the seats. >> reporter: this morning, a fan

fighting for her life after being hit in the face with a broken baseball bat. >> you could see the people like all around going like this. so you knew it was bad. >> reporter: fans watching in horror as the woman was struck by a shattered bat after oakland a's brett lawrie took a big swing at this pitch in the second inning. >> it was like a bullet coming in. i felt bad for her. it was awful. >> reporter: the game delayed as paramedics treat the woman. her husband watching while a police officer shields her young son's eyes from the situation and she's loaded on to a stretcher. >> they've brought a stretcher over in that direction. >> reporter: the announcers describe the horrific scene, wailing clearly audible over the stunned silence in the stadium. [ woman screaming ] >> reporter: police say the woman was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. >> first and foremost, our thoughts and concern and certainly our prayers go out to the woman that was struck with the bat. her and her family. a scary moment, certainly. >> reporter: now, there is protective netting set up

directly behind home plate. but that woman was sitting in the second row, just outside of the protected area. >> i know major league baseball did a lot to prevent the splintering of bats back in 2008. still, frightening. if you go to the game, you have to -- heads-up. >> reporter: you're sitting that close, you never know what can happen. >> great to have you in studio. thank you. >> horrific scene. we're thinking about that family this morning. we're going to move on to the reaction pouring in over night to an abc news exclusive. the woman who accuses the former speaker of the u.s. house of representatives dennis hastert, of sexually abusing her now deceased brother when he was a student at the school where hastert once worked. this is a fast-moving and spreading story. abc's chief investigative reporter brian ross is here with more. brian, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan. there's been no comment, however, by dennis hastert on the new allegations. he'll have to make a public appearance by at least next

tuesday when he's due in court to be arraigned on the federal charges against him. this morning, the former speaker of the house remains among the missing. not seen at his home in illinois or his farm in wisconsin. or at his washington, d.c., apartment, since the federal grand jury indicted him ten days ago. and shocked the political world. >> had no inkling whatsoever. i was as shocked and dismayed by the reports i read as anyone else. >> reporter: the indictment describes an individual "a" who received money from hastert to cover up past misconduct described by federal authorities as sexual misconduct. and now there is a second alleged victim. a student equipment manager on the high school wrestling team coached by hastert. a young man named steve reinboldt, who hastert described in a 1970 yearbook description as his great right-hand man. >> mr. hastert has plenty of opportunities to be alone with

steve. >> reporter: reinboldt's sister, jolene has opportunities to be abused by hastert. he revealing inged the information to her. >> i asked him, stevie, when was your first same-sex experience. he looked at me and said, it was with dennis hastert. and i just -- i know i was stunned. >> reporter: no doubt he was telling you that hastert had abused him sexually. >> oh, yeah. >> so ordered. >> reporter: as hastert rose to power, reinboldt's sister said she kept hoping that what she calls the dark secret would come out. but it did not. >> i figured he was going to get away with it. >> reporter: she says she decided to finally go public in hopes that individual "a" and other possible victims would know they're not alone. >> i feel vindicated and like stevie's vindicated. that you know, he can't -- mr. hastert can't pull this -- the wool over everybody's eyes. finally the truth is coming out. >> reporter: reinboldt's sister, jolene said neither she nor her brother ever asked hastert or

received -- asked hastert for money or received any. unlike individual "a." the identity of individual "a" remains a mystery. it will certainly come out should the case go to trial. >> we'll know eventually. let me ask you about miss reinboldt. has she been receiving any reaction since she went public with you? >> reporter: she says she's been overwhelmed by a positive response from friends in yorkville. she lives in montana now. she's heard from lots of people saying it was about time this came out. >> as we said, this is a fast-moving and spreading scandal. we know you'll stay on top of it. >> absolutely. >> brian, thanks again. paula, over to you. we want to move now to horse racing history. the weeks of hype are over. and we'll know later today if the sport has its first triple crown winner since the late 1970s. american pharoah, the beloved and powerful colt, needing to win the most demanding of the three races, the belmont stakes. can the champion run into the recordbooks? we check back in with ron.

who is at the track in elmont, new york. hi, ron. >> reporter: they call the belmont the test of champions. a mile and a half. and think about it. three grueling races for 3-year-old thoroughbreds over a period of just five weeks. can american pharoah join the pantheon of great racehorses like citation, secretariat, seattle slew, or affirmed in 1978? we'll find out later today. this morning, american pharoah, one step, or rather a mile and a half, away from horse racing history. as a winner of the triple crown. a feat that has not been accomplished in 37 years. >> i'm pretty confident because the horse is telling me that. he put on that show. they're not going to beat him. >> reporter: even with a misspelled name and a shortened tail, american pharoah is not lacking in pedigree. his grandfather, empiremaker, winning the belmont. in 2013. his father finishing second in 2009 at the kentucky derby.

>> espinoza has won the kentucky derby! >> reporter: after his thrilling victory at churchill downs, american pharoah sloshing his way into the fans' hearts as he tore through the mud at the preakness in may. >> american pharoah is the leader. >> reporter: an encouraging sign for the owners as they prepare to watch him take on the track known as big sandy. the extra half mile thwarting other horses' attempts. the last to do it, affirmed. in 1978. >> affirmed comes to the wire. >> reporter: american pharoah jockey victor espinosa is all too familiar with the stage. this is his third shot at the crown. >> third time i've been here. every time i come here, i think i can do it. >> reporter: even in pharoah doesn't win the belmont, his owners have already inked one of the sport's largest sponsorship deals with monster energy inc. american pharoah's net worth is between $15 million and $20 million. a huge payday for its owners.

what reward is coming up for the potential triple crown winner? >> afterwards, he gets a lot of carrots. >> reporter: the rain has stopped. it still should be a soft track. that, as we said earlier, favors american pharoah. we'll find out in half a day whether he's among one of the great horses. i just want to remind you, dan and paula. 37 years ago, i was here. this is my souvenir. a $2 win ticket on affirmed. the last one to win the triple crown. i'm going to get a $2 win ticket on american pharoah and maybe hang on to that for the next 37 years. >> yes, exactly. >> how much did you win on that ticket? >> reporter: it paid about 9 to 5, so about $3.80. plus the $2 back. more worthwhile as a souvenir. >> exactly, he still has it, too. >> with compounded interest, over 37 years, because i know you're a big saver, i'm sure you're a wealthy man. ron, thank you. we'll get back to you later in the show. we want to say that ron mentioned that the horse has a shortened tail. it was bitten by another horse, a jealous horse awhile back. i spoke to the owner the other day. he said he resisted suggestions

washington, d.c., mansion. police reveal what they found in the car carrying daron wint when he was arrested. in connection of the deaths of savvas savopoulos, his wife, son, and housekeeper. stashed in that car, two knives, cell phones, money orders, cash, and clothing. the sharp objects could be key to this case. an autopsy revealed sharp force injuries contributed to the deaths of all four victims. and a final farewell to beau biden. the eldest son of vice president joe biden. during a wake on friday, the vice president and his family stood beside beau biden's flag-draped casket greeting over 1,000 mourners. president obama will deliver the eulogy during today's funeral before heading to europe for the g-7 summit. beau biden died a week ago after a long battle with brain cancer. a quick-thinking california bus driver is being hailed a hero this morning. on friday, tim watson spotted a 3-year-old boy and a suspect who allegedly snatched him from a library on his bus. watson alerted the authorities. the suspect was arrested. the boy was not harmed. and finally, a newlywed couple is flying high after a wild impromptu wedding in the

let's check the weather once again with fellow cat lover rob marciano. >> if i remember standing in the flood waters last week, there was a cat story right before me. we have to get off this. we take you to fresno. there were some fires that broke out across fresno in southern california yesterday. because of lightning. thunderstorms really across the entire western third of the country. some of them started some fires out there. you're trying to get a handle on it. multiple fire crews. they have air support going in there in the last 24 hours. heat is building across the pacific northwest. the hottest stuff of the year so far. temperatures in seattle into the 80s. near 90 in portland. boise. 90, 95 degrees. so hot, the national weather service put out an alert. look if you're going to dip your toes into some of the creeks and rivers from some of that snow melt, those waters are still cold. the northwest folks can't take the cold that well, at least the first batch. here's blanca. category 3 storm. getting into the baja of california. phoenix, first measurable rainfall on june 5th on record.

american pharoah gunning for the first triple crown win in 37 years. ron claiborne is track side. at belmont park. ron, what's happening? >> reporter: hey, there, dan. it's empty now. except for a few early people. later, there will be 80,000 people here jammed into the stands. they'll be roaring when those horses, including american pharoah hit the top of the stretch. for the stretch run to the belmont stakes. a little bit of trivia for you. the song that is played during the post parade here since 1967 until 1997 was "sidewalks of new york." then the belmont wanted to go to a more modern song, they switched to "new york new york" by frank sinatra. that is currently the song that will be played when those horses, the field of eight, goes out on the track around 6:45 this evening. american pharoah will, of course, be the heavy favorite. back to you guys. >> ron will be holding his $2 to win ticket. next year, they'll be playing "shut up and dance with me" as they take the field. ron, thank you. we're hoping you win tonight and

be hiding in the woods of western pennsylvania. the six-day crime spree starting off monday, allegedly stealing a truck in upper sandusky, ohio. the next morning, police say, stealing shotgun shells at a nearby walmart. on wednesday, wreaking havoc near pittsburgh. according to authorities. investigators say after attempting to rob this convenience store, the pair was recognized by an elizabeth township officer. dragging him with the stolen truck from the parking lot on route 48. as they attempted to get away. his bullet-proof vest shredded. the skin on his hands and arms torn up as well. >> so i immediately held on to the bed rail to keep myself from falling. he proceeded forward, started accelerating. my leg started dragging. right in front of the tire. >> reporter: now, after finding clothing in the thick woods on friday, investigators are desperately searching for the teen runaways as their family pleads for them to come home. safely. >> we want both of them home safe. i don't care what you did.

and change all of their pass words. the cyberattack that has affected more than 4 million past and present employees appears to have originated in chain that. chinese authorities say they're not responsible for the attack. and nearly 70,000 people packed a stadium in sarajevo as pope francis arrived for a one-day visit. the pontiff calling for peace. between the faiths in the largely muslim country. and talk about too close for comfort. diver john dickinson was spear-fishing off jupiter, florida, on friday when he spotted this. that is a huge great white shark sidling up next to him. >> no thank you. >> he says the encounter lasted about two minutes but felt like a lot longer. >> you think? >> the shark 16 feet long and weighs nearly 2,000 pounds. >> why is he following the shark with a camera? why isn't he swimming away? >> because it's kind of a cool thing. >> a cool thing to almost get eaten by a shark? >> you would swim away. that was for the sake of videography. >> and keep the camera rolling. >> keep the camera rolling as you swim away.
