live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> good evening. i'm katie marzullo. body cam video captured a deadly police shooting in oakland today. the case involves an unresponse uh man behind the wheel of a stalled car and a loaded gun in the passenger seat. abc 7 news is in the news room with the latest on the investigation. katie? >> when the man woke up police say a confrontation ensued. investigators won't elaborate on the interaction at this point. they want to review the body camera footage of more than a dozen officers first. >> it was a bad scene. >> reporter: pushed back from the intersection of lakeshore and lake park avenue a farmers market vendor recorded oakland police trying to wake a man in this silver bmw. >> hands out the driver's side window! >> reporter: firefighters first approached it around 7:30 a.m. >> the person in the car was

unresponsive but next to the person was a pistol. so they called opd. >> open the window put your hands outside of the window, and get out of the car. and i think they said that a couple of times. at least twice, maybe three times. >> reporter: bean bags shot against the car didn't wake him. they used a metal pipe to break the passenger side window. this took around an hour. >> the person at that point was awake. a confrontation ensued with the officers and the person. one officer deployed a taser. a second officer deployed the firearm. >> reporter: police have not released the man's identity. only saying he was pronounced dead at highland hospital. they did share photos of the gun firefighters reported in the front seat. >> as you could see it is a chrome pistol and it had in it a loaded 30-round magazine. >> reporter: investigators with homicide internal affairs and alameda county district attorney's office are reviewing video from more than a dozen

officers body cameras and the gas station cameras near the shooting. there's another layer to this story. the same bmw is a suspect vehicle related to auto burglaries at san francisco's land's end park. the vehicle pled last night and the u.s. park police are investigating that incident as well. developing news now from santa cruz county. that's where a suspect died and a police officer went to the hospital after a shooting. investigators say it happened while an officer chased a man near the paharo river. the officer was taken to a trauma center after being shot in the stomach. police shot and killed the suspect. teenagers gathered at the site where a classmate died in cloverdale. the highway patrol believes the girl was watching an illegal straight race last night. one of the cars apparently hit her while she sat on a guardrail and sent her body flying toward the russian river below. local teens say crocker road is

a popular spot for street racing. the victim's body was not found until this morning. no arrests have been made. byron highway has reopened after a fatal crash that killed two people and injured at least four others in contra costa county this morning. the chp says a pickup truck broadsided a ford flex making a left-hand turn. both vehicles overturned. paramedics rushed two children to oakland children's hospital. san jose police have arrested a bouncer accused in the death of a clubgoer in march. jose rodas is charged with involuntary manslaughter. police say the victim daniel esquivel got into an arguments with him. officers say rodas punched the victim knocking him to the ground. friends drove the victim to the hospital where he died. in sacramento county check out this video captured tonight when a lightning strike caught two palm trees on fire in antelope and started a house fire. this video was taken by the sacramento metropolitan fire district. crews quickly contained the fire

and the red cross is helping the family. no one was injured. only 11 horses have ever won the triple crown. today american pharoah galloped into the history books at belmont stakes becoming number 12. it's the first time in 37 years a horse has won the sport's highest honor. abc news reporter lit erer elizabeth high pressure has more. >> they're off! >> reporter: with ul eyes on american147th belmont stakes took off with the fans roaring and rooting for their favorite thoroughbred that had dominated the kentucky derby and took the top prize at the preakness. american pharoah took the lead early and never looked back, staying ahead of the pack the entire mile and a half race. >> american pharoah has won the triple crown! >> reporter: and the champion earning his title, winning the triple crown in 2:26.65 seconds. >> finally did it.

bicycles were not here. >> reporter: the bikes had been triple locked to his motorcycle which was parked just outside the valet and security booth at their hotel. someone cut through all the locks and made off with the bikes, each worth about $10,000. >> he was kind of defeated by it a little bit i think. and i told him that no we can't not do the race because we don't have bikes, we'll figure something out. >> reporter: when we first talked with chad he was refitting riding shoes. when they checked in the announcer told the crowd what happened, so several racers offered to help. the san francisco riding community has come through. she's got a bike for the race tomorrow. >> reporter: peggy had been in the triathlon ten times and owned a spare bike. >> i felt really bad. they said this guy is raising money for cancer both his bikes got stolen and i lost someone to cancer this year. her birthday's tomorrow. so i thought this is perfect. >> reporter: as part of chad's trip he's raised thousands to

covering novato oakland, sunnyvale, and all the bay area. this is abc 7 news. we all know the warriors and cavaliers are battling for the nba title. off the court, another competition is taking place tomorrow. a group of bay area volunteers will challenge a charity from cleveland. abc 7 news was in san francisco's south of market neighborhood as members of #lunchbagsf delivered hundreds of loaves of bread. volunteers hope to make 3,000 lunches storm. all of the food will go to local shelters. >> this is a great way to get exposure. a very creative way. we thank cleveland for challenging us and bringing this exposure in such a high level to everybody that didn't know about our organization previously. #lunchbag is an organization that's been run throughout the country. it started as a little movement,

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. good evening. i'm katie marzullo. tonight, tragedy in sonoma county. a teenaged girl died after a suspected illegal street race in cloverdale. the highway patrol believes a car hit her knocking her off an overpass last night. her body was not found until this morning. the search for a thief and two high-priced bicycles in san francisco. someone cut through locks to take both bikes from the back of a motorcycle at a hotel near fisherman's wharf. the high-performance bikes belonged to a south carolina couple in town for the escape from ka traz triathlon.

fellow athletes donated bikes so they can still compete tomorrow. in oakland, police body cameras might explain what happened during a deadly shooting today. officers shot and killed a man inside a car on an off-ramp from i-580. the man had been unresponsive when police first approached the car. officers say they saw a gun in the passenger seat. a manhunt is on tonight after a brazen escape from a maximum security prison in northern new york state. two convicted murderers used power tools to slice through steel walls in their cells at the clinton correctional facility. police say the men followed catwalks and a sewer tunnel, eventually making their way to the street through a manhole. they eventually arranged -- they even arranged clothing in their beds to make it look like they were asleep. >> you look at the precision of the operation, it was truly extraordinary. and unusual. no stone is being left unturned.
