going to stay situated at our shoreline. but everywhere else a big and quick warmup. in fact, we are talking about plenty of 80s and 90s inland. and the temperature spread grows further with a heat advisory in effect for tomorrow. we will talk about detail about that in a few minutes. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. breaking news this morning. two people are dead after they were ejected from a car that left the road on westbound interstate 80 and rolled over. two other passengers were rushed to the hospital. it was at 12:30 this morning when the chp was called to the crash near the manwelcome post parkway. authorities are investigating whether there was another car involved in that deadly incident. this morning investigators are looking at the details of a small plane crash with four people on board in morgan hill. it's a story you will see only on abc7 news. the plane went down last night just after 11:00, barely missing powerlines. it ended up blocking a southbound lane at cochrin road. the co-pilot said he and three others were flying back from a dinner at harris ranch. >> it also started to sputter

out a little bit. killed the engine. went to turn it back over. it coughed for about ten seconds and completely died. so we went to emergency procedures. decided highway 101 is right here is best bet. so we decided to make the best out of the worst-possible situation. >> everyone on board walked away safely. the co-pilot said despite the circumstances, it was one of the smoothest landings he's ever been part of. a watsonville police officer is recovering this morning after being shot in the stomach by a man who, in turn, was killed by police. authorities say the man began running when he was approached by officers near his home. he ran on to a levy of a river firing at officers. >> we saw a police car came in speeding all the way up to the top of the river. then i saw a policeman coming. he was wounded or something. he was doing this. he went inside the police car and took off. speeding i guess to the hospital.

then all the cops, all different police agencies started coming from cap toll law, from the highway, from everywhere. >> the man's name has not been released. authorities say he was well-known to police. this is the first time a watsonville police officer has been wounded in the line of duty since 1998. a deadly police shooting in oakland was captured on video by a bystander. this case involves an unresponsive man behind the wheel of a stalled car and a loaded gun in the passenger's seat. abc7 news reporter katie has the story. >> it was a bad scene. >> pushed back from the intersection of lakeshore and lake park avenue. -- we lost that story. we will try to get back to you

on that. video was captured last night when a lightning strike set two palm trees on fire in antelope, starting a house fire. we don't have the video but it was taken by the metropolitan fire district. we are told cruz were able to contain the fire quickly and the red cross is now helping the family. no one was injured. >> well, let's turn to that horse race. it took nearly 40 years, but horseracing finally has another triple crown winner. american pharoah trounced the field at the belmont stakes, putting him in the top echelon of one of the greatest horse racehorses ever. here's abc's elizabeth herr. >> excited. this is all for you! >> american pharoah called the ones in a lifetime horse, now in the record books as the 12th horse in history to win the triple crown.

the 147th belmont stakes took off with the fans roaring and rooting for their favorite thoroughbred that dominated the kentucky derby and took the top prize at the preakness. american pharoah took the lead early and never looked back, staying ahead of the pack the entire mile-and-a-half race. >> american pharoah has won the triple crown! >> and a champion, earning his title, winning the triple crown in 2:26:65. >> finally did it. and for the third time. i've been here twice and i feel like a loser. now i feel like a winner! >> perseverance paying off for the jockey victor espinosa. and the trainer bob behalf for the. >> i told him he's ready ride him with confidence, and he did. >> for the owner, the victory sweet and rewarding. taking home the $800,000 triple crown winnings. american pharoah now worth more than $20 million. >> he looked unbelievable, focused, honest, relaxed, full of energy.

>> american pharoah defeated 31 challengers on his road to making history. the last time there was a ripple crown winner, 1978. elizabeth herr. belmont park, new york >> we will go back to the story about the deadly police shooting in oakland that was captured on video by a bystander. here's katie with the story. >> it was a bad scene. >> pushed back from the intersection of lakeshore and lake park avenue. a former's market vender recorded a policeman trying to wake a man in this silver bmw. >> the person in the car was unresponsive, but next to the person was a pistol so they called opd. >> open the window, put your hands outside of the window and get out of the car and i think they said that a couple of times. at least twice, maybe three times. >> bean bags shot against the car didn't weak him either so they used a metal pipe to break

through the passenger's side window. this took about an hour. >> the person at this point was awake. a confrontation ensued with the officers and the person. one officer deployed a taser one officer deployed a firearm. >> police have not released the man's identity, only saying he was pronounced dead at the hyland hospital. they did share photos of the gun that firefighters reported in the front seat. >> as you can see it is a chrome pistol, and it had in it a loaded 30-round magazine. >> investigators with homicide internal affairs and the almeda county district attorney' officer reviewing video from more than a dozen officer body cameras and the gas station cameras near the shooting. abc7 news. abc7 news. >> the escape from alcatraz triathlon kicks off in san francisco for just a couple of hours. for two participants from south carolina bike thieves nearly

derailed their chance to race until fellow triathletes stepped in to help. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the story. >> >> for chad and candace, racing and the escape from alcatraz is on their bucket list. something very wrong happened to that plan. >> we come out about 6:00 and the bicycles were not here. >> the bikes had been triple locked to his motorcycle which was parked just outside the value hay and security booth at the hotel. someone cut through all the locks and made off with the bikes, each worth about $10,000. >> he was kind of defeated by it a little bit, i think. i told him that, no, we can't not do the race because we don't have bikes. we will figure something out. >> when we first talk with chad, he was refitting riding shoes. that's because when he checked in the announcer told the crowd what happened so several other racers offered to help. peggy had been in the triathlon ten times and owned a spare bike. >> i felt really bad.

they said this guy is raising money for cancer and going his bikes got stolen. and i lost my sister-in-law to cancer this year. >> as part of chad's trip here he raised thousands of dollars to help battle prostate cancer. he's determined not to let the bike theft derail his plan. >> we are this far into it so we aren't giving up. we are still going to race and not let it hold us back. >> thanks to the generosity of other racers, they can mark this race off their bucket list. abc7 news. >> bike thefts are a real problem in san francisco. >> yeah. a beautiful day to be on a bike in san francisco. low 70s for a high today. that's a big warmup compared to yesterday. here's the view from mt. tam. there is plenty of fog out there. in fact, even livermore reporting some clouds. we will talk about how warm it's going to get today and the heat advisory tomorrow. the east bay valley is flirting with 100 degrees. your forecast coming up. >> thank you, lisa. also next flashback to 1975. where were you last time the

week" from an unknown location abroad. you can see it this morning. >> the warriors are battling for the nba title. off the court another competition is taking mace this morning. a group of volunteers is challenging a charity from cleveland. abc7 news was in san francisco south of market neighborhood as members of #lunch bag-sf delivered hundreds of leaves of bread yesterday afternoon. they hope to make 3,000 lunches today and all the food will go to local shelters. >> this is a great way to get exposure and a very creative way. we thank cleveland for challenging us and let everybody know about the portion. #lunchbag is throughout the country and it started spreading. >> a similar event will take place in cleveland. >> as you know, the last time the warriors were in the nba

finals was back in 1975. a long time ago. so we thought it would be fun to look back and see what was going on 40 years ago. abc7 news anchor ama daetz has the details. ♪ that will keep us together ♪ captain and teneal had the number one single of the year. ♪ the lights are shining on me ♪ >> glen campbell was number two ♪ like a rinestone cowboy ♪ foulke classic "the rocky horror picture show" premiered in 1975. but the highest grossing film of the year was about a shark. arena, so the warriors had to move across the bay to the palace. you could get a ticket for nine dollars. the biggest star was rick barry, the coach, al laddels. the finals marked the first time two african-american coaches met head-to-head in an nba championship. it was a great year for other oakland sports, as well. the a's finished first in the american league west. pitcher vida blue won 22 games. the raiders were the best in the afc west. but there were no selfies from fans back then. the computer age was just beginning. microsoft was founded and the prototype for apple's first personal computer was created in 1975. that same year california came notorious for two attempts to assassinate president gerald ford. two women both tried and failed. they weren't the only women making headlines as criminals. newspaper heiress patty hearst was arrested.

average today. just in one day the numbers are really going to warm up very quickly. then a heat advisory is on tap for monday. our mini heat wave is on. you look out the window and you are like, i don't think so. well, we do have the compressed marine layer that will keep the low fog and clouds at the coast today. it will be in the 60s there. the fog is not going to last long. we will see plenty of warmth today. a big dome of high pressure pushing over the eastern pacific, moving into california. but first i want to update you on this system that may be affecting us come tuesday and wednesday in the form of more subtropical moisture. it's hurricane blanca and it's quickly losing strength. it was a category 4 yesterday now it's a category 2. pushes into the baja spreading the 5 to 7 inches of rain. tuesday in san diego. late tuesday and wednesday pulling up into the santa clara valley. the sierra nevada getting set

for several rounds of perhaps severe weather. for the bay area it makes it kind of humid and a little interesting around here by midweek. but from mount diablo you can see the low clouds and fog. in the 60s. so it is farmer in san jose by by 5 degrees. san francisco 54. delays at sfo about 35 minutes. here's sutro and the fog below the maron layer over 1,000 feet. about 1500 feet. yeah, it's intact. its with us. it will continue to create some problems along the coast this morning with anywhere from 4 to down to 1 mile visibility. as high pressure pushes down on the atmosphere that fog gets dense at teams before it evaporates. we look for 56 right now and in the upper 50s in livermore with a few clouds around. mt. tam showing the low deck of clouds. this is going to be a little event where we have a wide range of temperatures almost a 30-degree spread. coastal fog clear inland, much, much warmer today. a heat advisory in effect for tomorrow. so it's going to be hot and it

hasn't been this hot in a really long time. take a look at this huge dome of high pressure as it pushes into the eastern pacific, and all of the western third of the nation here looking very, very dry from the pacific northwest down through southern california and they will be look at more dry weather. the heat advisory from 1:00 to 8:00 tomorrow. maybe flirting with 100. perhaps the risk of heat-related illnesses. we haven't seen this heat in months. in fact, we will look for temperatures to slowly come down on tuesday. it's still going to be in the 90s for many locations on tuesday. 86 san jose today. 84 cupertino. low 80s redwood city and palo alto. san francisco 72 degrees. a beautiful day and fog along the coast. a little sun around stinson. mid-60s there. 82 novato. east bay a nice day for oakland. much warmer for san leandro. low 80s often i don't know

for many locks. low 70s in the city. lack for mid-to upper 70s in oakland. 80s arrive in san jose. and 90s in the inland east bay. even hotter tomorrow with a heat advisory. carolyn. >> thank you. we just talked about this a while ago in our preview of good morning america. a manhunt is on after a maximum security escape. it is the first time there. yesterday two convicted murders used power tools to slice through steel walls in their cell at the facility. they followed cat walks and sewers, and eventually making their way to the street through a manhole. they even arranged clothing in their beds to make it looks like they were asleep. >> you look at the precision of the operation. it was truly extraordinary. and unusual. >> no stone is being left unturned. we have the department of correctional services, your state troopers, u.s. marshals.

>> police say those men are considered dangerous. one escaped prisoner received a life prisoner for killing a a deputy sheriff years ago >> happening today, there is expected to be march or a parade in san francisco. it's not a celebration but a remembrance. back in 1984 more than 100,000 indian army troop attacked the religious most sacred shrine. it begins at second and market streets at noon, winding its way to the civic center. some students in san jose got to visit n.a.s.a. ames research center because of what they will send to the international space station later this year. as jonathan bloom explains, the objects won't arrive on a rocket, they will get to space
