owners. he met the horse. he'll be here with what's ahead in a little bit. we begin with the breaking news. a dangerous fire raging at a chemical plant in hanover, pennsylvania. breaking out early this morning. firefighters on the scene being warned about toxic air. abc's ryan smith is here with the latest. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, robin opinion an inferno igniting. officials are calling it a major hazmat incident in pennsylvania. authorities telling people to avoid it and stay inside. a massive fire. near harrisburg, pennsylvania. what officials are describing as a major hazmat situation. towering flames engulfing the building. as thick plumes of smoke billowed through the sky. a witness posted this video to twitter, which he describes as chemicals from a burning warehouse. the blaze began around 3:30 this morning. officials announced an emergency shelter notice for residents. within a mile radius. it's unclear whether the smoke

from the blaze is hazardous. we just learned moments ago, the fire is not under control. but sit contained. people urged to stay in their homes. no word yet on injuries or fatalities. robin? >> thank you, ryan. the massive manhunt for two convicted killers who broke out of a maximum security prison. police say they could be anywhere. hundreds of officers search right now as schools near the prison are on high alert. gio benitez is on the scene. one of the escapees is said to be vicious and evil. >> reporter: that's right, george. this is serious. we're talking about convicted murderers here. abc news just learning that a female employee here at the prison has been taken in for questioning. she's been removed from her post. many wondering if she or anyone else here helped get these guys out of prison. this morning, schools in upstate new york taking extra security measures as a massive manhunt is under way for two dangerous convicted killers. 34-year-old david sweat and 48-year-old richard matt,

escaping together from clinton correctional facility. >> be on the lookout for two escapees from clinton county correction facility. >> reporter: they were last seen in their adjoining cells on friday night at 10:30 p.m. for bed check. reported missing at bed check the following morning. leaving this note behind. reading have a nice day. police say they used power tools to drill through a wall and work their way down four stories. shimmying through 24-inch pipes. after climbing through a series of cat walks and pipes. they walked 300 to 400 yards down a tunnel. escaping on the street about a block from prison walls. new york's governor andrew cuomo saturday retracing their escape route. >> the state police, d.o.c.s., and surrounding agencies are following up on every lead.

>> reporter: both men are serving life terms for murder. sweat killing a sheriff's deputy. matt kidnapping and killing his former boss. the historic breakout is the first since 1865. for the largest maximum security facility in new york. many comparing it to the plot of the blockbuster movie "shawshank redemption." the prison's isolation gives it the nickname new york's siberia. once home to famous inmates like lucky luciano and tupac shakur. many people are on edge. including the families of the victims. >> it brought back all the memories and all the thoughts and the terrible torture that they have inflicted on kevin. >> reporter: and back out here live at the prison, everyone is on edge here. just to get to this location, we had our car searched at least three times, george. >> and this could turn into an international manhunt. you're about 20 miles from the canadian border. >> that's right. and we're talking about

a canadian border kind of porous. you can walk through, right to canada through some of these woods here in this area. a lot of people concerned in canada. of course here in america, we're talking about a reward of $100,000 for their capture. >> okay, gio, thank you very much. now to the police officer, texas police officer in trouble after that confrontation at a pool party was caught on camera. the officer has been placed on leave after he was seen slamming a young girl to the ground and pulling his gun on the group of teens. tom llamas is here with more on that. good morning tom. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you. when you watch this video, you see things turn ugly really fast. a lot of kids, not a lot of cops, chaos and what some are calling a questionable police takedown. this morning, a white texas police officer on administrative leave after this cell phone video captures him pulling this 15-year-old bikini-clad girl down who was black.

>> go ahead. >> reporter: slamming her head. >> on your face! >> reporter: then holding her down on the ground for several minutes. >> stop fighting me. >> reporter: the situation prompting questions of excessive force, as the officer is seen taking out his gun as two others appear to rush in to help the girl. >> move! >> reporter: the incident began outside a pool party in an affluent suburb of dallas. where according to the police officers responded after residents called to complain about several teens who didn't have permission to use the community pool and refused to leave. the cell phone video doesn't show the moment that sparked the incident. but does show the situation escalating. >> whoa sir. >> get on the ground. >> hold up, sir. >> i told you to stay. get your [ bleep ] on the ground. >> we just came from a birthday party, please. >> reporter: first three officers, then an additional

nine end up responding to the crowd of about 50 teens. >> don't make me [ bleep ] run around here with 30 pounds of gear on in the sun because your want to screw around out here. >> reporter: a local station spoke to the girl after the incident. >> i'm guessing he thought we were saying rude stuff to him. he grabbed me and he like twisted my arm on the back of my back. and he shoved me in the grass. he started pulling the back of my braids. i was like telling him that, he can get off me because my back was hurting really bad. >> reporter: that girl was not arrested. the officer in question could not be reached for comment. two officers from the department's internal affairs department are working this case right now. police say no one was injured. just to give you an idea of how big this story is growing. last night, 1 million people had seen the clip on youtube. this morning, more than 4 million. >>ky believe it. such a shock to see that gun come out. thank you, tom. now to a rough landing overnight on a flight from washington to buffalo. the united plane skidded off the

runway before stopping in a grassy safety area. david kerley is at reagan national with the story. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, george. rough and a little bit scary. the weather was not good. windy and rainy. they circled a couple of times. united says it was wind that pushed this plane off the runway. passengers are telling a different story. >> 3796 turn left at the end and how was the ride on final? >> reporter: it was the question the pilot of this united express commuter jet probably didn't want to answer. in the rain with winds gusting up to 25 miles an hour in buffalo. the late flight from washington-dulles to buffalo ended up off the runway. an embarrassed pilot admitting. >> uh, we rolled off the end. >> i'm sorry, say again? >> we rolled off the ending. >> roger, you're off the runway. >> yes, sir. >> roger. >> reporter: but did it just roll off the end of the runway? passengers said something didn't feel right earlier. >> when we hit, it just didn't seem right. the braking seemed very erratic. the runway was feeling rougher than it normally did.

all of a sudden we heard a rumbling. the plane finally came to a stop. looking out both windows, it was pretty clear we were not on a runway. >> reporter: the 69 passengers and 4 crew members were not hurt. >> we have efr on their way. is there any damage or are you just off the runway? >> no, we're just off. >> reporter: and so they brought out buses. everybody taken back to the terminal. the faa now investigating to figure out what happened in that landing, george. >> okay, david, thank you. to amy with today's other top stories. starting with some violent clashes at a concert near here last night. >> that's right. police in riot gear firing tear gas into a crowd of fans trying to get into a sold-out show at metlife stadium. chaos broke out after the gates were closed. the concert featured chris brown and kendrick lamar. that kept out some legitimate ticket holders. some people started throwing bottles and breaking down barricades.

several people were taken away in handcuffs. breaking developments in the massive hack of government websites. more americans may be at risk. more than 4 million current and past government workers had their personal information compromised. investigators are looking into whether people who have never worked for the government may also have been affected. the u.s. suspects the attack was carried out by chinese hackers. break news in the oscar pistorius saga. the paralympian who was found guilty of culpable hmds. we learned overnight herk may be moved to house arrest in august while hi waits for his appeal. he's serving a five-year prison sentence. if released he would be forced to wear an ankle monitor. [ explosions ] and that used to be an office building in harrisburg, pennsylvania. now, you see, it's just a pile of rubble. it was imploded to make room for a parking lot. and meet sonya baumstein.

only the 12th horse ever. the champion colt is not done racing yet. dan harris is here with much more. you had a chance to spend a little time with him, didn't you, dan? >> reporter: well they let me see him from a distance. they didn't want me to spook him before the race. since 1978, many horses came close. only american pharoah truly had the goods to finally break the long losing streak. pulling off what is one of the rarest feats in american sports. when american pharoah arrived home at his trainer's barn at churchill downs on sunday, there were news choppers and fans watching quietly so as not to spook the horse while he got a well-deserved bath. saturday night, he raced into history, 5 1/2 lengths ahead of the nearest contender. at the belmont stakes. >> american pharoah has won the triple crown! >> reporter: "gma" spoke to american pharoah's owners, ahmed zayat and his son, justin, shortly before the race. you believe you have the horse

attack at one of the most popular beaches in america. a 10-year-old boy bitten twice on the leg at florida's cocoa beach. the boy air-lifted to the hospital. mara schiavocampo has the latest. good morning, mara. >> reporter: robin, good morning. that boy was close to shore when that attack happened. and there were no reports of sharks beforehand. >> reporter: that boy was close to the shore when that attack happened. nationwide, the shark population growing, thanks, in part, to a hunting ban, making incidents like this increasingly possible. >> trauma alert from a shark bite. >> reporter: a 10-year-old florida boy's fun in the sun turning terrifying. attacked by a shark. while swimming in waist-deep water in florida's cocoa beach sunday. >> our life guard spotted the victim in the water. seemed in some distress. ran out there, found out he had a bite. >> reporter: the boy bitten at least twice on the leg in what officials are calling one of the worst attacks there in years. witness photos showing the child being treated right on the beach before being air-lifted to the hospital. >> the kid handled it as best he could. he did great. i think the family did great. >> reporter: cocoa beach is one

of florida's top summer spots. florida happens to be the shark attack capital of the world. just last month, two attacks on florida beaches in the same day. both in shallow water. one also here at cocoa beach. with the shark population up an estimated 42% over the last 15 years, sightings are also becoming increasingly common. take a look at these six sharks spotted swimming off the coast of california last month. some up to six feet long. this morning, that florida boy is recovering from his injuries. the beach reopened to swimmers. experts say shark bites and fatalities are very rare. still, this spring, the first deadly attack in u.s. waters since 2013 when a swimmer in hawaii was fatally attacked. george? >> yeah i remember that one. mara, thanks. turn to a crime on the rise right now. packages being swiped off doorsteps. usually think of christmas time for that.
