an earthquake, a fire and strike have stopped bart service throughout the transbay tube since it opened in 1974 but later this summer the need to replace aging rails will keep trains from running under the bay for a couple weekends. sergio? >> that and the last time that

that service through the tube was stopped was a couple years ago for that transit worker's strike this, is going to be a scheduled project. so there is going to be lots of time for commuters to plan accordingly. every day, about 400,000 commuters use bart to get around the bay area. this summer the tube will be out of service. it's shocking news for commuters. >> labor day then in august as well. one weekend. >> going to be hard to get to work. >> bart will need to shut down five days, stretched over two weekends. august 1, 2, and labor day weekend are being considered. >> labor day weekend is among the least-traveled weekend in the bay area. so that is -- we know that that is a good time to do major works >> bart needs to replace a system of rail crossovers between west oakland and the tube. those rails are more than 40 years old part of a project to replace aging parts of the

system meaning an adjustment for some. >> what do you figure you're going to do with the weekends? >> i don't use it on the weekends. so i'm not going to be that affected by it. but i imagine it will affect lots of people. >> officials are considering how to adjust service. leaders will hold a news conference on wednesday to announce maintenance and transportation alternatives. >> it took an hour for caltrans to reopen the westbound lanes on 580 after emergency repairs shut them down. caltrans says work would be done by 2:30 but lanes opening an hour later. last month a big rig lost diesel onned road. the combination of that, plus today's hot weather melted part of the road.
