good morning, america. killers clues. police search this gas station ile from the prison where those killers escaped as the manhunt heats up. authorities pore over new surveillance tapes, and new details emerge about the relationship between one of the killers and that prison worker suspected of helping them with the plot. new overnight terror arrest. a new england man linked to isis arrested. and a close encounter between a u.s. fighter jet coming within feet. tensions rising as they face off high in the sky. >> and a tough night for the

cavaliers, with this frightening fall right into a camera leaving a big gash in his head. >> golden state bounces back in a big way. >> they certainly do. the warriors come storming back. the league's mvp, helping his team even things up at 2-2. setting up a supershowdown. ♪ we do say good morning, america. happy friday, everybody. another game last night and a scary moment for cavs fans. lebron getting stitches for that nasty gash. he's going to be okay but tied at 2-2. big game five coming up on sunday. cavs never recovered from that injury. kind of a blow-out. everybody looking forward to the game on sunday. right now, we begin with the latest on that all-out search for the escaped killers in upstate new york. police sifting through new clues

intense focus on a gas station near the prison where the convicts may have gone looking for food. gio benitez on the scene with the latest. good morning, gio. >> reporter: we are now entering day seven of this search for the killers and still no clue where they are. now investigators hope hunger makes them emerge. this morning, police are reportedly examining surveillance video from a mobil gas station less than a mile from the prison where the two escapees may have rummaged through the trash for food. the station which also features a subway sandwich shop opens at 4:00 a.m. around the time officials believe the convicted killers may have emerged from the manhole as new details about the investigation into whether prison employee joyce mitchell had a relationship with escaped murderers richard matt and david sweat. sources say in just the past year prison officials looked into whether mitchell who supervises the prison's tailor shop had that relationship with sweat, but concluding there was not enough evidence to take action against her.

the district attorney now speaking about mitchell. >> did joyce mitchell provide tools and equipment to these inmates? >> joyce mitchell has not provided power tools. >> reporter: but the d.a. said she provided contraband but wouldn't say what. authorities want to know if mitchell was supposed to drive a getaway car friday night. if so, she never showed. we've learned she checked herself into a hospital complaining of a panic attack. abc news also learning investigators are speaking with other prison employees. >> we're talking to people who may have been involved. and anyone who was involved, that is a crime unto itself. >> reporter: experts say inmate and employee interactions can be complicated. employees are warned not to s share information that inmates could use as blackmail. >> from a safety and security standpoint. that's always something addressed from the very beginning is making sure that those boundaries are not crossed or compromised.

road. the 24-year-old was taken into custody by officers in the joint terror traffic force. >> a couple cars went into the corner and they came into the word. >> reporter: he had been under surveillance for the last ten days ever since the dave this dra mat hick screen when 26-year-old rahin was shot and killed after he lunged with a knife. rahin set out to kill or behead a uniformed police officer, as part of the what he believed were orders from isis. the man arrested overnight is believed to be part of that alleged plot. a neighbor told an station, he converted to islam. and now the search goes on for his ties to the isis plot.

involved a big u.s. reconnaissance jet, have a russian fighter jet fly next to it is very different. that u.s. reconnaissance plane cannot maneuver quickly and that whirling air, little tornadoes coming off the wings of the russian fighter can affect the controllability of the u.s. airplane. george? >> and we're seeing this more and more in international air space. russians trying to distract from all of that tension in ukraine? >> i think so. putin is clearly flexing his muscle as well. those russian hot dog pilots are also gathering intelligence about the u.s. weapon systems whether that reconnaissance plane or u.s. navy ship the russian fighter recently buzzed. they gain insight to reaction times and control. but the big danger is someone makes a mistake. now to the threat of severe

transformer. overnight, in iowa almost four inches of rain in two hours. so here are the two pockets i was talking about. along the warm front i think indianapolis is a spot to watch especially later this afternoon and evening, cleveland all the way through western new york and northwestern pennsylvania and then along the cold front back in the plains parts of kansas down into western texas and parts of the panhandle, have to look for large hail and damaging winds and flash flood watch, so much to talk about and much more coming up in your nation's weather. george. >> we have new developments now in the case of the 12-year-old cleveland boy shot to death by the police. a judge ruled there is enough evidence to charge the officers that killed tamir rice and ron claiborne is here with the latest. good morning, ron. >> good morning. well, what happened is a group of african-american activists in cleveland used an obscure state law to go straight to a judge with evidence against the two white police officers involved in that fatal shooting and the judge agreed there was probable cause to bring charges against both of them. this morning, the startling new development in the death of tamir rice. a judge ruling there is enough evidence to charge the officer

who fatally shot the 12-year-old boy with murder. last december responding to a report of someone with a gun, officer loehmann shot and killed tamir seconds after arriving on the scene. it turned out the boy had a nonlethal pellet gun. the ruling made after a group of community activists petitioned the judge to file charges say they did not trust the criminal justice system to act. >> we are encouraged by is the validation of our efforts, we are encouraged that this is a step towards justice. >> reporter: the judge also ruling there was probable cause to charge officer timothy loehmann's partner, officer frank garmback with negligent homicide and dereliction of duty. overnight, the lawyer for officer loehmann saying "the order issued by the municipal court does not and should not impact the independent investigation conducted by the cuyahoga county sheriff's department" and from officer garmback's lawyer "the investigation and final decision are still in the prosecutor's hands."

and, in fact, the judge deferred to prosecutors and declined to issue arrest warrants for the two officers saying his ruling was only advisory. the prosecutor's office says it will present the case to a grand jury and let it decide whether to file charges. george. >> okay, ron, thanks. but that pressure building on the prosecutors. now to amy with today's other top stories. new details on that massive data breach in washington? that's right. that cyberattack on a government website may be even more extensive than first thought. chinese hackers are suspect of breaking into the computer systems at the office of personnel management going undetected for more than a year. compromising security clearances and personal data including information about employees' families and associates. a union representing government workers speculates the hackers could have stolen the social security numbers of every federal employee. but it remains unclear exactly what data was stolen. this morning, south korea is reporting an 11th death from the mers virus outbreak.

that is creating more concern that the deadly respiratory virus could spread to the u.s. the cdc is urging doctors to be on alert for patients showing possible symptoms. a controversy in washington state involving the head of a local naacp, accused of misrepresenting her race. rachel dolezal claims she's african-american but her family says she was born to white parents and has been lying about her race for years. when asked by her station in spokane whether she is african-american, dolezal refused to comment. surveillance video in santa ana, california, appears to catch police behaving badly during a raid at this marijuana dispensary. they're seen trying to first disable security cameras apparently not well. because we're looking at it then they decide to play darts then they're eating some of the products. and then joking about kicking a customer in a wheelchair. the department promising to investigate. in dallas a gang of would-be

thieves was caught on camera plowing an suv through the front of this store and tried to slam the atm, apparently trying to break it free to get away with the cash but guess what, it wouldn't budge so eventually they gave up and drove out empty-handed. if you think the scariest part of flying is when you take off, you definitely will not like this maneuver. boeing is showing off its new dreamliner jet which can take off at a nearly vertical angle soaring into the sky at 90 degrees during this practice run for the paris air show. the jet carries more passengers, uses less fuel and in my humble opinion should be carrying more of those little white bags that you find in the front of your seats. just a suggestion. and finally, they may not be headed to the olympics just yet, two divers competing in singapore had a pretty tough day on the board. take a look, the first dive, well, you'll see why it earned him a zero. just wait for it. >> oh, no.

carolina. abc's matt gutman has the story. >> we have a shark out here in ocean isle. someone just got bit. >> reporter: this morning, a 13-year-old girl recovering from a terrifying shark encounter. >> got a hold of her foot and bit her foot. >> is there any serious bleeding. >> it's bleeding pretty bad. >> reporter: the shark taking these two frisbee size bites out of the young teen's boogie board in the waters off ocean beach, north carolina. >> she wobbled out and left the boogie board. and it just went at the boogie board. >> reporter: the attack, believed to be the fourth shark attack off the atlantic coast in just two weeks. earlier this week in cocoa beach, florida, a 10-year-old boy also on a boogie board chomped while swimming in waist deep waters. badly bleeding as rescuers carried him off the beach. in recent days shark sightings seemingly everywhere. this one spotted off huntington beach, california. >> oh, my god! >> reporter: cruising by a paddle boarder. if it seems that there's more

mansion murders. the housekeeper is alive because her boss told her not to come to work that day. >> it's been a month since that homicide and fire and while a suspect is behind bars, those closest to the family remain traumatized like nelly gutierrez housekeeper for the savopouloss for nearly 20 years who described a voice mail that saved her life. this morning for the first time we're sitting down with the woman who could have walked right into the middle of a deadly home invasion if t it weren't for this message telling her not to come to work the day of the brutal attack. >> amy is in bed sick tonight and she was sick this afternoon and vera offered to stay and help her out. >> reporter: nelly gutierrez, the other savopoulos housekeeper for 20 years speaking out to "20/20" after all four were killed in this washington, d.c. mansion, still wonders if there's anything she could have done. >> i can't stop thinking about that day, well, maybe if, you know, if i was there, maybe i

help them. >> reporter: and now gutierrez says on the day of the killings she attempted to call that other housekeeper numerous times. >> that day i call her three times and, you know, so i sent her a text message, are you okay, so call me when you have a chance. >> reporter: a search warrant unsealed on thursday detailing what was in box after box of evidence seen here being removed from the charred mansion earlier this month. the document listing hair, dna and fingerprints, recovered along with plastic bags, garage door openers, cash and, of course, that pizza box found in the bedroom where some of the victims' bodies were discovered. these newly obtained floor plans providing our first look at the inside layout of the home where nelly gutierrez says she still can't accept she'll never return to work. what do you think about now when you think about the fact that they're gone? >> it's very hard and i know i'm going to miss them forever.

and now to the custody battle being fought by actress kelly rutherford. a los angeles judge has ruled her children can spend the summer with her in the united states. the judge worked out the plan with the judge in monaco where the children live with their father. rutherford says her ex-husband is trying to prevent the kids from coming to the u.s. and finally everyone gets the chance to wear the pants in this family. the smith family in north texas has a tradition of wearing the same pants to high school graduations. it started back in 1950 when dan smith wore the pants. they belonged to his father and then just last week dan's grandson lee wore them for his graduation. he's the 15th smith to wear these wool navy blue pinstriped pants to accept a diploma. there you see they're going back into storage until the next grandchild graduates and that's in 2023. >> wow. >> so number 16. >> that is a great tradition. >> smarty pants. >> smarty pants.

"no, your kid may not have a snack," detailing what she calls our obsession with snacks. >> given that obesity is a problem, it seems puzzling to me this is something that we should be so concerned about culturally. our kids hungry, even for half an hour that, you know, we get stressed out about that. >> reporter: so we hit the streets of new york to see what moms had to say. is oversnacking really an issue? >> i think they get snacks twice

number one, if your child comes to you and says they're hungry, give them water first. a lot of times they're thirsty but their brain registers it as give me food. the second thing is eating mindlessly in front of a screen unless you're watching "good morning america," we frown on that that's not a good idea and, lastly, put them to work and help them help you prepare these snacks unless you're alex's daughter. >> you don't want to hide those -- you don't want to hide the food for the kids. i'll give my daughter a hot dog because she wants it but cut up collard greens and make sauerkraut. i air-lift my little veg on top. we negotiate it. it's negotiation all the time with your kids. there's so much fun stuff to eat. >> and they usually win. >> good advice. are you going to come out to the park and judge our barbecue. >> speaking of snacking, jason derulo and i are going to have a barbecue snack fest and pick a winner. >> the golden spatula is at stake, america. >> i'm not saying anything. my lips are sealed. >> no bribing over there, lara. >> i know.
