dallas police headquarters, has been under attack. >> and we want to you look at the video. again, look at this, an armored van just outside the police headquarters, ramming directly into the squad cars and then listen to the gun fire ensue. >> [ bleep ]. oh, [ bleep ]. >> what followed was a chase, another gun fight and the discovery of at least one pipe bomb. and this story is still developing as we speak. abc's ryan owens is in dallas right now with the latest. ryan? >> reporter: good morning to you, dan. quite a night here in dallas. a little bit of everything. gun fire explosives you name it. after dallas police headquarters comes under attack from at least one gunman armed with explosives. dallas police believe they have killed this gunman and essentially, this situation is

over. they are still checking his cars for more explosives. gun fire erupting on the streets of dallas overnight. men with assault weapons opening fire at police headquarters then crashing into a police cruiser with what appears to be an armored truck before shooting at officers. >> i opened the windows and then heard snaps over head. and since i was in the marine corps, i know that is gun fire coming in our direction. >> reporter: police chasing the suspects to a jack in the box restaurant ten miles away in the town of hutchins where another shoot out takes place. >> at this point, we have an actual person inside there. garrett's been able to see him. there have been rounds that hit the glass and have not penetrated. >> they shot of the suspects in

hutchins through the front windshield -- excuse me through the front windshield of the van, striking the suspect. since that time we have sent the bomb tech robot to try and confirm whether the suspect is deceased. >> reporter: the bomb squad finding multiple packages with explosives. one exploded as a robot tried to move it. all packages now have been cleared. police say they know who the suspect is. he has a long history of beefs with the police department. namely recently blaming him for the loss of the custody of his son. paula? now we want to turn to the developments of the two prisoners escaping from a maximum security prison. a worker who works there is accused of helping them, providing hacksaws and chisels

and other dangerous materials. they have been on the run for a week. residents are feeling a close encounter with the convicted murders and here is the latest from one of the search areas. phillip mena is there with more. good morning, phillip. >> reporter: paula, good morning, searchers are still out here stopping every car that comes through looking for the two killers. this morning, we are learning the guys may have had the tools to escape five weeks before they busted out. overnight, prison worker joyce mitchell, seen here in handcuffs after she was arrested for allegedly helping two convicted killers break out of an upstate new york prison. just hours later, a judge ordering her held on $220,000 bond. >> she is charged with contributing contraband. fourth felony. and a class "a" disdemeanor. >> reporter: court documents obtained by abc news reveal the 51-year-old prison tailor provided tools, a hacksaw blades, chisels, a punch and a

screwdriver bit to help richard matt and david sweat cut through cell calls and several layers of grating and pipe before finally escaping through a manhole cover a week ago. >> this does not happen. and if you do it, you will be convicted and then you will be on the other side of the prison you have been policing. and that is not a pleasant place to be. >> reporter: the intense manhunt now in its eighth day. the police have no confirmed sightings of the murderers and no evidence of them leaving the area. through the night, torrential rain again hampering the man hunt. >> the weather hampers the investigation. but it also aids the investigation because the escapees have to deal with the same inclement weather. >> reporter: joyce mitchell has pleaded not guilty. she will appear in court in plattsburg on monday, and she is facing up to eight years in prison, dan? >> so many questions about the nature of her relationship with the men. thank you.

we want to move to another big developing story this morning. severe weather. take a look at this hail falling in texas. we have intense thunderstorms and flooding and it's going to get worse as the weekend progresses. and rob is tracking it all. good morning. >> dan, you huge zone and you see the clouds firing up. they are still doing it this morning. yesterday, over 200 reports of storms, many of those damaging wind. overnight, severe weather from texas to massachusetts. extreme winds tearing the roof off this warehouse in bethlehem, pennsylvania, toppling these tractor-trailers along the highway. in colorado this truck completely submerged by raging waters, barely visible after being washed in the water by swift currents. hail the size of baseballs pounding texas, smashing mud on the windshields and making driving treacherous. in albany, new york, roaring thunderstorms bring spectacular lightning. deadly wind claiming one life after this tree toppled on to a mobile home in pennsylvania. >> high winds. a lot of rain.

>> reporter: this family, lucky to be alive after a huge tree split in half and tore in their masslin, ohio, home. the family barely escaping. >> pretty scary. >> reporter: in louisiana, the red river has started to recede. but many homes and cars are still under water. >> this is how it should look. that is what you are looking at right there. >> reporter: here is the threat for weather today. west texas and new mexico. looking to tomorrow, we start to focus in on chicago, detroit, buffalo and pittsburgh. again, gusty winds. we saw how much damage the winds can do. we're going see rains in areas that really don't need it anymore. mainly houston. we will talk more about that threat throughout the show. paula? >> we look forward to seeing you later in the show. thank you. and now a frightening scene at a theme park. a worker was hit in the head by a moving roller coaster and dragged. it happened on a busy day, many families seeing the horror unfold. the ride which reaches speeds up to 50 miles an hour is shut down.

investigators are piecing together just how it happened. aditi roy has more on the terrifying incident. good morning, aditi. >> reporter: good morning, paula. terrifying moments there. the joy of a thrill ride and amusement park turned into sheer horror after a worker tried to receive a cell phone from a platform and suffered injuries while doing so. >> an employee was hit by a roller coaster, head damage. >> reporter: overnight, a horrific scene at a busy california theme park after a roller coaster train slammed into a worker at great america. severely injuring him. >> he was trying to get something from the floor. i think someone dropped a cell phone. >> reporter: a witness on the extreme ride flight deck telling abc news that the worker leaned over the track to retrieve a dropped cell phone and a car of riders came under the corner into the station, striking the man. >> he got dragged

15 feet from the entrance to almost the exit. >> reporter: shocked observers describing the chaos. one onlooker not on the ride, witnessing the accident and closed her eyes because it was too gory. >> like, oh, my god, someone just got hit, and screaming and stuff. >> reporter: the extreme ride scene here, posted on youtube. popular for its high speeds up to 50 miles an hour, dangling riders' legs under the tracks. whipping them through loops and turns before coming into the station. it was as the ride came around the last turn that the worker was caught in the way. the collision also causing nonlife-threatening injuries to a passenger. both were transported to a hospital. no worth on either person's condition this morning. the park is still open but the ride is shut down as investigators look at the safety a's specials of the ride. at this point, it appears the ride did not malfunction. dan, you hope for the best for that worker. >> absolutely we do. thank you. abc news has learned that

federal officials are taking the rare step of setting up a no-fly zone along the eastern side of manhattan today. why? that is where hillary clinton will be holding the first major rally of her presidential campaign today. husband bill and daughter chelsea will be there. hillary is expected to be more candid than ever before about something deeply personal. cecilia vega is there with more. cecilia, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the rally takes place behind me on roosevelt island. it will be the first big rally since she launched in april. the deeply personal subject that you mentioned that's her mother. she hasn't spoken about her. her late mother, she was abandoned as a child. hillary clinton said that experience deeply affected her as an adult. it deeply affected the advocacy she has taken on as a politician. as a rally, this is a chance for one of america's well known politicians to reintroduce herself to voters. we have seen the small round

table discussions that she has been holding around the country. she is criticized for having them highly staged and choreographed. now she is going to make her case why she should become president of the united states. today she is going to talk a lot about the middle class. that is going to be one of the center pieces of her campaign. thousands of people are expected to show up for the event today. the campaign says they are at capacity today. and among the people on the stage here, bill clinton, chelsea clinton. we don't know whether baby charlotte will be here. >> that is a big question. she has taken a lot of heat for lack of policies and failing to explain the rationale of her campaign. meanwhile on the republican side the race is heating up. jeb bush is expected to announce this coming tuesday. how does that impact the clinton campaign? >> reporter: we will hear her take on republicans. she is going to try to separate herself from the pack. what she is also going to do

airport officials say the odor was coming from a small fuel leak. and in washington, the revote among democrats in congress handing president obama a resounding defeat on trade legislation. hours after president obama made a rare appearance on capitol hill visit on friday to appeal. congress rejected the bill with his own party overwhelmingly voting against it. unhappy measures by workers displaced by global trade. the president's trade measure was given a sort of lifeline by house republican leaders, rescheduled another vote for next week. and the government says it appears that chinese hackers have done it again. a second breach that exposed even more government information. government officials saying nearly all of the millions of security clearance holders including cia and military special op operations

personnel are potentially exposed to the hack. the chinese have denied any involvement. and from north carolina a 12-year-old girl was killed in a zip lining accident in summer camp. ymca officials who run camp cheerio north of greensboro say that bonnie sanders fell two stories after a tether connecting the pulley to the harness became frayed and broke off. and overnight, beverly hills police say john stamos from "full house" was arrested, challenge with dui. police say that he was pulled over after a number of calls of a erratic driver. he was transported to a hospital for a possible medical condition. finally, we have seen police chases but none quite like this. take a look at this. a woman gets lost on a busy roadway, all while riding her scooter. and as abc's ty hernandez shows us, the rider gets quite the escort back home. >> reporter: this morning, a different type of police chase caught on camera. watch this, a slow speed pursuit
