making news in america this morning, breaking overnight, nine people killed inside a historic black church. a gunman opening fire during a prayer service. >> these people were in church. they were in church, in church, and they violated the sanctity of that. >> the police chief calling this a hate crime. the all-out search now for the suspect. the child also who survived by playing dead. severe flooding, up to a foot of rain in some areas. the rising waters rushing down streets, even taking a bus away. we're tracking today's threat. airport scare. the boeing 737 catching fire at the terminal as terrified passengers watched. and money makeover. a female face soon gracing an american bill.

and hello, everybody. we begin with that breaking news out of south carolina. a massacre at a historic black church in charleston. nine people shot dead believed to be victims of a hate crime. a manhunt is under way right now and police just released these images of the suspect. you can see a young man in a gray shirt and black pants and also released pictures of the black car he was driving. he is considered armed and dangerous. >> meanwhile, dozens of heartbroken ministers rushed to the scene from all over the city holding hands and prayer all night. >> witnesses tell abc news the gunman actually attended part of the service. they also say one of the survivors is a 5-year-old boy who played dead. for more now, here's abc's lana zak. >> reporter: horrific tragedy in charleston, south carolina, a church group shot dead as they gathered in prayer. >> these people were in church. they were in church. >> reporter: eight people dead

at the scene. the ninth died at the hospital. a child at the church reportedly survived by playing dead. officials suspect a hate crime. >> the only reason someone could walk into church and shoot people praying is out of hate, the only reason, that it is the most dastardly act that one can possibly imagine. >> reporter: emanuel ame church is one of the oldest black churches in the south. the suspected shooter still on the loose is described as a white male around 21 years old. officials would not go into greater detail on possible motives for the shooting, but the pastor was well known for his civil rights activism and was pushing for police to wear body cameras. according to church members, the shooter reportedly came into the church, sat down and attended part of the bible study before opening fire. >> advising of an active shooter, multiple people down. >> reporter: in the chaos amid a bomb threat, the shooter fled. >> as far as we know right now,

there's only one person. we will put all resources and we will put all of our energy into finding this individual. >> reporter: lana zak, abc news, washington. >> let's get more now on the details of the mood, what's happening there in downtown charleston. >> reporter kristen mcfann is working the story for us and joins us by phone. kristen, good morning to you. are there any leads that might lead police closer to closing in on the suspect? >> reporter: you know we have another news conference coming up in a little while, but so far we have learned nothing more about the search for this killer. they said they're going to do everything they can to find him tonight, and there are helicopters everywhere. police combing the peninsula of charleston, and so we're hoping that's the case. but so far no updates on that. >> how is the community coming together right now? i know we are trying to get information and get it out there but also a lot of families and friends gathering trying to get information about the people who were in that church. >> reporter: yeah, i've actually been talking to family members that are leaving a hotel just

across the street from the church where they've been gathering, and they were supposed to get confirmation on the names of those who were killed, the eight dead in the church and then the one more victim that died at the hospital. but they just came out and said they're not going to get that confirmation until noon tomorrow. so, you can imagine the devastation here. it's been really, really sad to watch. >> we can only imagine. kristen, can you tell us a little bit more about the suspect and the hunt to find him right now? >> reporter: well, i did hear from two other family members that they have heard from people that were there that the man did join the bible study for a short time before he opened fire, and he's described as a white male, 21 years old with sandy blond hair, obviously extremely dangerous. the police are saying if you hear anything, you know anything, please call police immediately. there will be a reward offered. they're determining that amount this evening, and there was a man that fit the description of the shooter that was handcuffed earlier, but police are not

saying what, if anything, he had to do with this crime. >> okay. reporter kristen mcfann right there on the scene in charleston, south carolina. kristen, thank you very much. recapping that deadly church shooting in charleston nine killed at a historic black ame church. police believe that this was a hate crime. >> yeah, the witnesses telling us this is a young white man, the gunman, attended part of the bible study, just hearing our reporter on the ground saying he was there for a short time before he got up and started opening fire. he is still at large this morning, obviously considered armed and extremely dangerous. we will have another update for you later in this half hour. and the other big story we're following this morning, severe flooding in oklahoma from what was tropical storm bill. >> a campsite in falls creek was forced to close because of scenes like the one you're seeing here. rising waters creeping close to the buildings. also a look from above -- oh, my goodness. this bus from that camp, floodwaters sweeping it down the road while it was parked. no students were inside at the time. also here's what bill left behind in texas. you can barely see the top of

those cars, yes, those are cars there. this is in wise county where the system dumped 8 to 12 inches of rain. >> the radar right now showing bill's slow track inland as it makes its way through oklahoma and missouri. it will eventually spread into the ohio valley and northeast. the faa is investigating a close call at chicago's midway airport. a southwest jet cleared for takeoff began rolling down the runway, but at the same time a delta jet also started takeoff from an intersecting runway. an air traffic controller saw what was happening. listen to this. >> 1328, stop, stop, stop! >> i am holding. >> he's stopping. >> the two flights apparently shared similar flight numbers and that was cause for some of the confusion. the fbi is conducting a crackdown on american terror suspects who follow isis online. part of that crackdown, the arrest of a suspect right here in new york who's accused of attacking an fbi agent with a large knife during a search of his apartment yesterday. authorities call fareed mumuni a fervent supporter of isis who

was part of a broader plot to carry out a terror attack against new york city landmarks, and since last month, at least seven alleged isis supporters have been charged in the u.s. sources tell us many more arrests are anticipated before the fourth of july holiday. we turn now to major developments in the search for those two escapees in upstate new york. police have released these photos, new pictures of what the convicts might look like after two weeks on the run. prosecutors have confirmed that the prison employee now under arrest plotted with the two escapees to have her husband killed. they also say that joyce mitchell had a sexual relationship with one of the men. presidential candidate jeb bush has canceled events planned today in the charleston area because of the tragic shooting. yesterday bush sat down for an exclusive interview with abc's david muir in iowa. the former florida governor was asked if he felt the need to distance himself from his brother, former president george w. bush. >> there is a real fascination about where i'm different, where

i'm the same, but, you know, when you love someone as your brother or your dad, it's not easy for me to say -- just throw him under the bus to make myself look better. i just can't do it. >> a self-described introvert, bush says it takes a lot for him to be on the campaign trail, but he also says he's very competitive, focused and disciplined and when it comes to running for office, he's all in. president obama, meanwhile, huddling with congressional democrats today as efforts to revive a trade bill takes place in congress. last week that bill was blocked in the house by members of the president's own party. the house will likely vote today on a bill to give the president the ability to close the trade agreement with 12 pacific rim nations. well, pope francis today issuing a formal catholic church statement on climate change. it's a first he's issued, and it's aimed at making climate change a moral imperative for the world's billion plus catholics. on sunday francis said he hopes the statement sparks attention for what he called "environmental degradation." critics say climate change is actually outside the pope's field of expertise. well, still ahead, a woman soon to be added to american paper currency.

now available online at safercar.gov. there you can search for your car's v.i.n. number. well, interest rates are staying at historic lows for the time being. fed chair janet yellen says the u.s. economy is getting stronger, but the fed still wants to see further gains before raising rates. stocks on wall street climbed slightly on her comments. the dow gaining 31. the nasdaq up 9. the s&p 500 adding 4 points. well, at&t is about to get hit with a $100 million fine over its unlimited data plans. the fcc says the country's second largest wireless carrier has been slowing down internet speeds without properly disclosing that to customers. the proposed fine is the largest in fcc history. and a group that approves emojis -- who knew there was one -- is adding 37 new ones. here's a sample of them. plenty of food there including a cheese wedge, a taco and popcorn. we can't overlook the unicorn. now, it's up to tech giants like apple, microsoft and google to decide if they'll actually become available for use.

>> reporter: there's a huge amount of fear here. the police chief wouldn't go into specifics on, you know, what they thought he could do next except he just said he's extremely dangerous, and there is a manhunt under way to find him. they believe it's a hate crime. the church is just a few blocks away from king street, which really is the heart of charleston. i talked to some family a dad with his two kids who were on vacation who are terrified saying now there's this man on the loose and a lot of fear but no sense on what to do because the police don't seem to have any idea where he is. >> and listen to this. witnesses telling abc news the shooter actually attended part of the service at church before just standing up and opening fire. you can stay with us here at abc. tune in to "good morning america" for the very latest on this breaking story coming your way, but we are keeping a very close eye on this story as an active manhunt is going on for the person responsible. well, three postal workers here in new york are accused of a scam worthy of the grinch. prosecutors say the trio cheated

the popular charity "operation santa" by writing letters pretending to be needy children and asking for gifts like laptops, toys and clothes. once the gifts were purchased by the secret santa, the suspects allegedly mailed them to themselves. >> aye-yie-yie. well, a stunning scene now to show you from an airport in kazakhstan. no passengers on board this thing. tell you that first, but that's when an oxygen canister exploded sparking the fire you see. the plane had just landed after an uneventful flight. crews extinguished the flames which burned a large hole in the body of that 737. and this from london. the driver of an suv spotted by a biker eating cereal behind the wheel, tells us she's breaking the law but she seems to just shrug it off and keep on eating her wheaties. the biker turned the video in to police who could issue her a ticket for eating behind the wheel. >> maybe it was cap'n crunch. are you sure it's wheaties? >> i don't know.

amy? >> here is where it happened, the explosion happened at 5:00 p.m. yesterday, described as "very loud." the man who was here was making fireworks. he was burned severely. that is the bomb squad detonating explosives they found, doing it in a safe place but it took all night long. while they were doing that, they evacuated the homes near the house where this happened so the red cross relocated people for the night. police say they took 42-year-old anthony stewart to the hospital. he suffered from severe burns. they say at this point his condition is unknown. >> developing news, a
