right now, the investigators are inside the pool trying to determine exactly how this all happened. alan wong reporting live in antioch, abc 7 news. >> alan, thank you. breaking news in union city right now. live over an apartment fire in the back of a four-unit complex. flames first broke out about 4:15 at a carport next to the apartment building. >> and you can see all the smoke coming off of that area. you can also see on the left-hand side in the smaller box, you can see the water being doused onto the area from firefighters. and the map shows you where it is. our breaking news continues on twitter at abc7news.com. we continue to follow this breaking news of this fire. the shootout this afternoon between two cars in an emoryville parking lot. witnesses say about ten shots were fired in the lot of the pack 'n save on san pablo avenue.

bullets struck a few cars. thankfully no one was hurt. both cars took off left the parking lot. police are looking for those involved tonight. today an oakland man convicted of killing his estranged girlfriend was sentenced to a minimum of 100 years to life in prison. he was convicted of strangling sondra coke. he drove her car and used her atm card. the drug called him a liar manipulative and a black hole that sucks up other people. >> we needed a conviction. we believe that he would harm another person again if he were out in the community. >> coke was a federal defense investigator. she and alana had an on again, off again relationship for years. the two had a daughter together. police want to find a man who tried to sexually assault a

woman in a parking lot. a woman was taking packages out of her car near bert street and park creek drive. police say a man grabbed her from behind put a knife to her throat and tried to take off her pants. she pushed the panic button on her car alarm and the man ran away. she had a small injury to her neck. san francisco police are stepping up traffic around portsmouth square in chinatown. more officers are patrolling the area after an elderly woman was killed crossing kearny street. the woman was pinned underneath a car turning left from clay street. the city is also trying to make safety improvements at the intersection. >> we'll be banning right turns. we'll be creating a new signal phase that will give pedestrians a dedicated time to cross the road when traffic is not turning. >> the intersection is the most dangerous along the kearny corridor. so far this year there have been 20 accidents near portsmouth square. new documents from the city of berkeley indicate that the

balcony collapse there was avoidable. >> autopsies are revealing that multiple blunt injuries caused the deaths of six students in this really ter ebl tragedy. >> laura anthony is live at the building with more on the story tonight. laura? >> reporter: hi, dan. well, we are learning more about what contributed to this disaster, through records released today by the city. what we've learned is that the factors that contributed to this failure date back to when this building was constructed. >> a construction issue. >> reporter: documents from the city of berkeley confirm what private inspector matt said is plain to see. the balcony failure was not related to the design but rather the construction of this building. >> very likely has to do with the way in which slashings and membranes were installed, the things that would protect the wood, and divert water away and off of that deck. >> reporter: he suggests that since the balcony failed, other parts of the structure may also

be compromised. >> they're probably going to be wanting to do investigation into other parts of this building to make sure there aren't leaks in other places. again, it matters a lot less than have a balcony fail. >> reporter: as workers on a cherry-picker appear to be photographing and removing the last remnants of the balcony. below friends of the young people killed and injured came to pay their respects. in this case a group of young men who placed pictures at the memorial. and then stood arm in arm as they prayed. many who stopped didn't know the students, but wanted to honor them in some small way. >> i, of course i identify with them because i had a daughter who went on a work study abroad twice. i just wanted to come and pay my respects. >> reporter: seven students who survived the tragedy remain in area hospitals. one posted this picture on his facebook page that says berkeley six, rest in paradise. and a message, thanks everyone,

for the support in such a dark time. in berkeley, laura anthony, abc 7 news. state officials released reports of the six accidents involving google's self-driving cars. according to the dmv most of the cars were in self-driving mode when these accidents happened and other drivers caused the accidents. officials say no one was hurt in any of the accidents. they will begin testing the latest version of the self-driving car in mountainview. an ongoing dispute over how to make changes in the teaching staff at a sunnyvale school took a turn today. they have agreed all 25 teachers will be reassigned to other schools. abc 7 news reporter david lui joins us now with today's developments. david? >> reporter: ama, it was just last week when the 25 teachers here were told they had to reapply for their jobs. some thought it was unfair. as of today, they're all going to be replaced, leaving some

parents upset and others with a wait-and-see attitude. the sign says it all, our hearts are broken. it was put up a short time ago by teachers who won't be returning here in the fall. the about-face surprised them this e-mail saying reapplying for their jobs in west valley are not an option. >> they have over 300 years of experience at this school. because we love the families, we love their children. we want to make sure children get the most education. >> reporter: the district superintendent won't say what's behind the wholesale change. it's a personnel issue, she told us. it has the approval of the school board. >> this is really not right for our teachers. these are wonderful, loving people, and they care about our kids as much as i care about this whole school. >> reporter: the superintendent took advantage of language in the existing teachers contract. however, the union president remains hopeful community pressure will get the plan overturned. >> i would hope that if we had enough community pressure and

people were more involved that they can make a decision to have a new administrator there and keep the staff. try to resolve the issues they have within that. >> i want to make sure, whatever decision is made it is being an apparent of the decision making process. we need to understand what's going on. >> there is a little bit of rocking of the boat. i still have faith in the district that the teachers will be excellent for my child. >> reporter: in sunnyvale, david louie, abc 7 news. let's move on. the big dub nation celebration is only 17 hours away. and work on floats for the parade well under way. as you can imagine there is a lot of work to be done. clay thompson tweeted still in shock. we appreciate all the love, bay area. can't wait to celebrate with everybody tomorrow. the victory parade begins at broadway and 11th street near

the warriors practice facility and ends at the kaiser convention center. jonathan bloom is live with the excitement on both sides of the bay. >> reporter: that's right. as you can see behind me, the stage where they'll have the warriors celebration is already taking shape. some of these fans have already staked out their spots here on the grass to watch that celebration at the end of the parade route. on their way here the players and dignitaries will be snaking through downtown oakland. that's where all the local businesses are bracing themselves for a crush of other adoring fans. all of downtown can feel it. >> all along the street in oakland, everybody is excited. >> reporter: counting down the hours until these sidewalks are awash in gold and blue. >> people don't have to take their time inside and they can enjoy the parade outside. >> reporter: the bar next door. >> we're opening up early in the morning. tough for our bartenders because they're night owls.

>> reporter: the official warriors viewing party from one nail biting game to the next. they got to know the fans. >> about 75% of the people were the same people getting here early. they all got to know each other. you start to connect with people when you're celebrating together. so, yeah, we'll see all those people tomorrow, i'm sure. >> reporter: but they won't see the bartender. he'll be in the parade on one of the floats. >> really building six floats in two days. >> reporter: these same float builders are also preparing for san francisco's pride parade. some of those floats are getting a quick makeover for the warriors and taking a surprise trip across the bay. >> we don't normally travel outside the city. we do occasionally for a small town parade here and there. but we don't usually take an entire parade across the bridge. that's exciting. >> reporter: in part that's because all the recent victory parades have been in san francisco. now oakland is getting its chance. >> living in oakland, oeng a business in oakland, we feel like the warriors, like it's our team.

memorabilia were stolen. but thanks to san leandro police, he's been made whole again. vic lee has the story you'll see only on 7. >> 40-year-old david wallach was with the 101st airborne two tours to iraq. he served in kosovo bosnia haiti and other war zones. he moved several weeks ago from virginia to oakland to begin the next window in his life. a new beginning you might say. then everything went wrong until san leandro police made everything right. now here's the story. >> most of those belongings were military uniforms, and military artifacts. >> all this came from the oakland home of michael welch. san leandro police found the stolen property when they arrested him monday. >> we knew it probably belonged to somebody in the military. we just didn't know who it came from. >> reporter: a closer look at the stolen items revealed the

answer. >> the detectives found a luggage tag on one of the military surplus bags with the staff sergeant's name on it. >> reporter: it belonged to this man, sergeant david wallack who retired after 20 years in the army. had ehad just moved to oakland. >> i just went out for coffee that morning. >> reporter: he couldn't believe it when he got that call from police. his most prized possessions are his military coins, medals and artifacts. especially this one. >> this is the flag that was given to me by colonel steel. >> reporter: a flag that flew over his brigade's headquarters in iraq for 9 minutes and 11 seconds to honor those who died september 11th 2001. >> and this one was presented to me by the commanding general of the 82nd airborne division back in 2011. you have to earn those. they don't just give them away. >> reporter: the police say they were honored to return these

belongings to a vet of the country. >> thank you very much. >> reporter: vic lee, abc 7 news. >> great end to that story. nervous moments in solano county this morning. >> fire in the hole! fire in the hole! fire in the hole! >> you're watching authorities detonate illegal explosives confiscated from a home. police say 42-year-old anthony stewart remains in critical condition after accidently setting off homemade fireworks inside his house. police had to briefly evacuate his neighbors' homes. san jose is taking a tough stance on illegal fireworks. abc 7 news was at firehouse number 8 where officials introduced a new ordinance on who can use violations. >> it's worse every year. there are explosions. last night it was going on after

11:00 at night. we're like can we please go to sleep now? >> during june and july of last year the city received more than 2,000 fireworks complaints. if you're caught setting off fireworks, you could be fined up to $1,000. the one who lost the high-profile gender discrimination case must pay the firm she sued more than a quarter of a million dollars. they wanted her to pay it nearly $1 million in legal fees from the case. a judge ruled today she's responsible for $276,000 of that. she accused her bosses of passing her over for a promotion and then firing her because of her gender. home prices in three bay area counties hit record levels in may. the median sale price for slaent clara county was $800,000. which is a new record. $650,000 in alameda county also is a record high. in san francisco medium prices remained at $1.1 million.
