which we are doing right now. flowers and balloons to remember the nine victims and, david, you're just getting back. you were there last night. >> yeah, and as i mentioned just three people survived this and we always learn about the instincts that kicked in. you know, in one case the grandmother who said to her granddaughter, 5 years old as you just said, to lay there and play dead. that's the only way we'll survive this. and that's how they were able to get out. >> we are going to talk about those who lost their lives and we're learning so much more about what happened inside that room during the bible study. the hunt for the killer, his arrest, 21-year-old dylann roof flown back to south carolina last night. he will face a judge this afternoon. abc's steve osunsami begins our coverage in charleston. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. families coming here to this church dropping off candles and flowers and their tears. the suspect, the 21-year-old accused in this horrific

shooting appears in court today. he's talking with investigators and admitting to the crime. >> dylann, what do you have to say? >> reporter: this morning, law enforcement officials are telling us that 21-year-old who reportedly wanted to start a race war has confessed. police are thanking a woman in north carolina who recognized his face from the police surveillance photos on television. debbie dills was on her way to work at a florist and followed his car herself for 25 miles. >> i didn't want to believe that, that he would be, you know, up here. why would he be up here? then i seen his head and i seen the haircut the young man had and it was that bowl cut. >> reporter: the young man in the bowl cut is seen on surveillance video around 8:00 p.m. walking into this bible study at emanuel ame and asked for the reverend and sits for an hour. the historic black church is welcome to anyone. take a look. these are new pictures obtained from inside that bible study moments

before police say roof gets up and starts firing. this was recorded by 26-year-old tywanza sanders who was sitting at the table and did not survive the shooting. >> advising of an active shooter. multiple people down. >> reporter: the families of the few survivors sharing their frightening story with david muir. >> she played dead in order to, you know, survive, in order to get him not to shoot her. >> and she told her granddaughter to play dead too. >> play dead, yes. her son was also supposed to play dead, but he wanted to check on my cousin, the reverend clementa pinckney, and when he got up, that's when the gunman questioned him and started, you know, saying, y'all -- y'all rape our women and y'all have taken over the country, and i

have to do what i have to do. >> reporter: the nine victims were from 26 to 87 years old. many of them parents and grandparents. ♪ we shall overcome ♪ >> reporter: reverend clementa pinckney was a father and a state senator. >> i ought to give it my absolute best to try to make a difference for the lives of the people i represent and the people of south carolina. >> reporter: 45-year-old reverend sharonda singleton. her son was grieving deeply at a vigil thursday night. >> every time i do something good i'll probably give her a little wink or something in the sky and say love is always stronger than hate so we just love the way my mom would, then the hate won't be anywhere close to what love is. >> reporter: families continue for those nine victims. today, the streets here around the church will be blocked off. the city is planning a vigil for these victims tonight.

>> steve, thank you. as that young man said, love is stronger than hate. you reported from charleston last night and it was something to see the community coming together to comfort one another. >> it was incredible, robin. the church just a few feet down the block, was completely packed. i walked inside the back door and up the stairs and it was standing room only and the most moving image were all the hands, everyone was locked hand in hand and they said we're going to prove the community can move forward. this is 2015. shouldn't we be a lot further along than where we are. we're learning more about the man charged in this massacre, dylann roof. a high school student dropout who did not hide his hatred. cecilia vega live at the jail in charleston where roof is being held and she continues our coverage. cecilia, good morning. >> reporter: david, good morning to you. dylann roof's friends tell me that he wanted to start a race war. as you said, he is now in this jail behind me facing a single count of murder but there are more charges to come. an accused killer brought home to south carolina to face

justice hours after his arrest in north carolina, dylann roof flown by airplane back to charleston, police officers at his side. and this morning, the first pictures of roof behind bars. friends say the 21-year-old high school dropout was a loner, an unabashed racist with a deep hatred for black people. >> he wanted to make something spark up the race war again so he put -- he picked charleston, i guess, and then he targeted a black church. >> reporter: childhood friend joey meeks and his mom kim saw roof on tuesday, the day before the shooting. they say the fbi showed up at their house after they called police when they recognized roof's face on tv. they say roof advocated for segregation and always carried a gun in his car. >> he said that he thought that the black -- the black in general as a race was bringing down the white race. >> reporter: in this photo flag patches on roof's jacket, one from apartheid era south africa.

his bizarre behavior recently leading to run-ins with the law. in february roof wearing all black arrested at a mall after asking employees out of the ordinary questions like, how many workers there were and when they were leaving? he was accused of illegal possessing a prescription drug. roof telling police his parents were pressuring him to get a job. just two months later roof arrested again at that same mall for trespassing. and this morning, new questions -- >> dylann, what do you have to say? >> reporter: -- get so few answers. and roof is being held in isolation here. police say it is for his own protection. he does have a court hearing later this afternoon. now those friends say that now despite all of that hatred that roof espoused, they say he was not affiliated with any organized hate crimes, robin, they think he acted alone. >> that is the thinking at this point. cecilia, thank you.

we just heard from that hero florist shop worker who spotted the suspect and debbie dills joins us live right now from shelby, north carolina, along with police chief of shelby, jeffrey ledford. thank you both for being with us this morning and, debbie, let me start with you. thank goodness that you saw something and you acted upon it. just take us back to yesterday, what you saw. >> i was just on my way to work and had been watching a lot of the news coverage, started the night before and had been really thinking and praying about the people there and how horrific what happened to them was and i just can't imagine, i can't imagine in my heart of hearts what was going on with them but i was just on my way to work and i had seen a lot of the coverage and i had seen pictures of the car and pictures of the young man and i just looked over and noticed the car and i couldn't figure out really why i was looking at it and then i realized i seen the car. i seen the south carolina state -- the license plate on

the car -- and then i seen the haircut, the things that, you know, the news was telling us to look for or to look at, and then i didn't want to believe it was him but turned out it was him. >> and you followed him for more than 30 miles. what were you doing -- were you concerned that he might notice that you were following him? >> i didn't follow him directly. i got off of the entrance and come back to -- i started back to the floral shop and called my boss. who he's the one, todd, the owner here is the one who guided me through and he called the police and stayed on the phone for while i got back out on to bypass to follow him to see if i could get his tag number and everything. >> oh, my goodness. chief ledford, when your office received the call, what did you all do? >> well, once the call came in, she told us where she was in the city, then we were able to get our cars over to her, of course,

at that point they followed in behind him, identified the car, make sure we got the right one and that's when they did their stop. >> and did the officers say how the suspect, how he reacted if he said anything? >> was very cooperative the entire stop, no problems, no issues. he went peacefully so we had no problem with that part at all. >> chief ledford, many people were touched that before you addressed the media there that you called for church leaders to come, that you called for other community leaders to be there. why was that important to you, sir? >> we did that after this got started. we're fortunate, we have a coalition locally, a faith-based partnership, so to speak, so i had put something out to them, it had already gotten to the media, so i sent something out to a lot of our local clergy and

said here's what we've got, first off we ask them, you know, keep our staff and the folks in charleston in your thoughts and in your prayers and told them if they wanted to come up we'd be more than happy to have you, so they came up and were a tremendous asset to us, not only from a staff standpoint but from people who were coming to the department in the parking lot, obviously they had questions, emotions were up and down, so just having the whole community there along with us was important and it turned out to be a big payoff. >> it was very powerful, chief. it really was, so, chief ledford, thank you. debbie, bless your heart. i mean this is the person everyone was looking for. we're always told as citizens if you see something, do something and you did just that. many were fearful of what he could possibly do next. so i know that was of concern to you, as well. so, debbie, thank you. chief ledford, thank you very much. our best to everybody there. >> thank you. >> thank you.

>> you take care. >> thank goodness for debbie. she said she was praying for those victims inside the car. we'll have much more on "world news tonight." but we're going to turn to other news this friday morning in the meantime, that major wildfire burning in california right now. the fire burning in the san bernardino national forest. it's now scorched more than 10,000 acres. winds and the high heat fueling the fire and abc's kayna whitworth is on the ground in big bear. kayna, good morning. >> reporter: david, good morning to you. this is the first major wildfire of the season here in california. some of these firefighters are working in 24-hour shifts and still the fire is just 5% contained. overnight, flames as high as 40 feet scorching the earth and bringing down trees in the san bernardino national forest. with dozens of summer camps in the area nearly 200 students rushed to safety in fear the massive fire could grow. dry, windy conditions fueling the fire burning more than 10,000 acres.

500 firefighters, 5 air tankers, 7 choppers battling the blaze throughout the night. people living in nearby big bear doing anything they can to help. >> we just wanted to give a little bit, donate what we could to help them, you know, stay hydrated. >> reporter: over 600 people evacuated so far. firefighters tell me this side of the mountain has never seen a major wildfire and because of that there's all of this undergrowth that the drought has made even worse and this is what the fire is burning, all the way down to the road. >> in red and the fire is moving in that direction. >> reporter: roads working as a fire line and winds pushing the fire east, luckily away from homes. the lake fire is just one of several fires to have sparked up in southern california on wednesday. and look a this with these drought conditions it's not likely to end any time soon. on top of that, it's estimated that california alone has lost

some 12.5 million trees since the drought began. robin. >> all right, kayna, thank you. now to a frightening scene in the skies this morning. a stowaway falling to his death after clinging to the bottom of a jet flying over london. abc's bob woodruff has that story for us. >> reporter: it was a perilous journey that ended in tragedy. apparently, two men clinging on to the wheel well of a british airways plane for 8,000 miles, one falling to his death on an office building in the london suburb of richmond, some 12 miles short of london's heathrow airport. the other found on the plane in a serious medical condition, now being treated at a local hospital. british police have not released details of the two men but say the survivor is aged between 25 and 30 years old. british airways described the incident in a statement as a very rare case but it does happen. only three years ago, a 26-year-old man jose matada was killed when he fell from the plane on its way into heathrow from angola.

according to the faa, 96 stowaways have been found on 85 flights since the records began back in 1947. the youngest was only 9 years old. just traveling inside the wheel lock is potentially fatal. it is cold and at 18,000 feet hypoxia can set in. most of this flight would have been more than 33,000 feet. abc's ryan owens showed what it's like to hide in a wheel well. it's a deadly risk that some are willing to take in search of a better life. bob woodruff, abc news, london. >> incredible risk to take. all right. we're going to turn now to "gma" weekend anchor paula faris in for amy. and we have a major scare at a water park. >> that's right, it was a frightening scene. dozens of kids trying to beat the heat in california started complaining they couldn't breathe and their throats were burning. hazmat officials rushed to the antioch park and they were exposed to a high level of chlorine. that could be toxic if ingested. 17 were taken to the hospital.

and we have new details about that new york prison escape. they have been added to the u.s. marshal's most wanted list. and an attorney for the husband of that prison worker charged with helping the men says his client is, quote, blown away by the murder for hire allegations against his wife. meantime, a new report surfacing finds there are more than 130 escaped prisoners on the run across the country right now. toyota is defending its head of public relations. the american is the company's first female executive. she didn't intend to break the law. talk about a new low for tiger woods at the u.s. open. this shot you're going to see says everything. woods in high grass, the club, he loses control of it. it goes flying landing 15 feet behind him. he ended up with the highest opening round score of his professional career. ouch. and speaking of ouch, when a man's divorce settlement called for his ex-wife to get half of

but we begin with hulk hogan's $100 million lawsuit over a tape that was posted online by the website gawker. hogan claims it's an invasion of privacy. gawker argues he's fair game and it's news. it's the first celebrity sex tape case to go to trial and abc's david wright has that story. >> reporter: in the red corner the mustachioed muscle man who bested the likes of brutus beefcake and rowdy roddy piper. hulk hogan, undisputed master of the leg drop. now taking on a very different adversary in court. >> well, we're seeking monetary damages and a permanent injunction against the video. >> reporter: in the blue corner gawker media, the website that dared to publish a secretly recorded sex tape of the 300-pound bruiser wrestling intimately with the then-wife of a friend, a florida deejay nicknamed bubba the love sponge, a post seen by 2.5 million people. >> so there was clear news interest in this topic.

we break the story that this is with his best friend's approval so there's that aspect of newsworthiness. >> reporter: at issue whether the sex tape is news or gossip. >> no one is going to mistake hulk hogan's sex tape with the pentagon papers. >> reporter: there have been plenty of leaked sex tapes before but never before has the celeb been ready to risk more humiliation in open court. hogan's argument even the brashest personality is entitled to some privacy. >> the law says that if somebody is in a private place doing private things they have a right to do that and they have a right not to be filmed without their knowledge and they have a right for that film not to be played to the world. >> reporter: but gawker insists the sex tape was news, protected by the first amendment. >> months before gawker ever published this was a giant story in the news. >> reporter: hogan had publicly denied the affair and had frequently boasted of his sexual prowess in books, on reality tv and on howard stern. >> if you scroll through my pictures, wow. >> naked pictures. who's in your phone that's naked?

seriously. >> who do you think? >> reporter: the case is headed for trial early next month. hogan's seeking $100 million in damages. >> if hogan wins it would definitely send a loud message to reporters to be careful. >> reporter: hulk hogan looking to put the leg drop on gawker. for "good morning america," david wright, abc news, new york. >> all right, david wright, our thanks to you. abc's dan abrams is here. you heard what hulk hogan's attorney said there. if somebody is in a private place doing private things they have a right not to be filmed if they have no knowledge of this. >> yeah, gawker didn't take the film so that's not the legal question, though, here. as a legal matter, gawker has a very strong argument and that is hulk hogan made his sex life news and then we covered his sex life. that's news too. the problem for gawker may be that in front of a florida jury, the question in their minds may end up being was it right or wrong to publish it. they may end up becoming media critics as opposed to evaluating this legally.

that's the danger, but this has worked its way up through the federal courts on separate questions and just about every time gawker has ended up winning, certainly in the end gawker has won as a legal matter, and i think that as a legal matter they're going to end up winning again. >> but as you point out what gawker has its on side is that he brought up his sex life before and put it out there. >> right, under different facts, gawker could be in trouble. if they had tried to sell the tape, for example, as a legal matter, they'd be in trouble. if hulk hogan had not made his sex life such a big issue in the past, they could be in trouble legally. and that's going to be the challenge for their lawyers here. is to try to keep the jurors focused on this question of was it newsworthy. the problem is when you hear the word newsworthy, right, and you hear the term was it of public concern? people are going to say, public concern, how is it of public concern that hulk hogan was having sex with someone? well, public concern is a legal matter.

doesn't mean the same thing that we think of it -- >> judgment in your mind. >> that's right. it doesn't mean as a legal matter is it going to determine the future of the republic? is it important? that's not the standard. the government doesn't get to decide what's important and what's newsworthy. and hulk hogan doesn't get to decide that. if he makes this an issue as he did and he's a celebrity as he is, then it's very tough to figure out legally how gawker loses the case. >> right. a lot of those jurors everyday people might be thinking of privacy. >> that's right, privacy and right and wrong and that's the thing that the gawker team is going to have to overcome. >> and the fact it's gotten this far. >> that's right. the fact that it's going to trial is a big deal. >> thank you, gentlemen. now to that cruise ship accident that injured 17 people overnight. the ship crashing into a wall in a river lock in upstate new york. t.j. holmes is here with all the details. good morning, t.j. >> reporter: hey, there, robin. what we're talking about, a

river lock, we're talking about two walls sitting here on the river. one side opens up, a ship goes in, wall closes and can add or take away water so it levels out. open the other wall, ship goes out. that's what's supposed to happen. this ship is sitting between those two walls. passengers still on board as they try to figure out how bad the damage is. >> respond to a boating accident at eisenhower locks. >> reporter: overnight, a scare at sea. >> copy the transmission. apparently this is a passenger vessel. >> reporter: this was the scene in upstate new york, a cruise ship on its way to toronto with 274 passengers and crew on board, all french nationals slamming into a river lock wall in the st. lawrence seaway. >> boat's taking on water. >> reporter: the 286-foot "saint laurent" putting out a distress call after it crashed into that concrete structure at the eisenhower lock near the canadian border. >> you may want to move your lighting units up to the scene as soon as possible. >> reporter: as crews rushed to drain the water from the lock, the coast guard rushing to the scene. 17 passengers injured in the collision. crews triaging them and removing

them from the ship. this morning, the ship is still locked in place as investigators look into what caused the accident. >> if they can repair the ship with the passengers on board, then the passengers will remain on board and continue on with the cruise. however, i'm leaning to believe that there is enough damage to the ship that probably will not take place. >> reporter: this ship was scheduled to stay on the st. lawrence seaway that connects the great lakes all the way to the atlantic all summer, right now vacation cut short. they are stuck sitting there. right now, guys, it looks like the damage is too extensive and they're going to end up being taken off that ship at some point. >> stuck on the ship. >> all right, teej, have a good weekend. thanks very much. now to flooding concerns for louisiana to kentucky, ginger has made her way there to the park. >> oh, and i made it right here to a perfect morning in the park for a hot concert but it has been far from perfect in the middle of the nation. as we have been talking about all week, almost 5 inches of rain in shreveport, louisiana. this is what it was looking like from there through missouri, tulsa, oklahoma, getting hit hard.

on the young suspect. cecilia, good morning. >> reporter: hi, paula. good morning to you. dylann roof is in jail here facing a sing the count of murder but there are more charges to come. he was extradited from north carolina overnight after his arrest. friends say the 21-year-old high school dropout was a loner and unabashed racist with a hatred for black people. they say he advocated for segregation, wanted to start a race war and they tell me he always carried a gun but a loner not affiliated with any organized hate groups and they believe he acted alone and he's being held in isolation. police say that's for his own protection. paula, he has his first court hearing later this afternoon. >> all right, cecilia, i know you'll be covering the story all day. thank you. also happening right now, a state of emergency in missouri. one of several states bracing for record flooding in the aftermath of tropical storm bill. at least three deaths blamed on those floods. more than 13 inches of rain falling in parts of oklahoma. over a foot in texas and that rain is moving into the ohio valley and the northeast. ginger's forecast, of course, coming up just ahead.

meantime, bone-dry conditions in southern california are fueling this wildfire near the resort town of big bear. the fire scorching more than 10,000 acres. nearly 200 campers had to be evacuated. it's one of several fires burning across the west. and a shocking story overseas, a man hiding in the wheel well of a british airways jet made it all the way from south africa to london before falling to his death just before that plane landed at heathrow airport. he was found on top of an office building. another man hiding in the wheel well surviving that 11-hour flight, most of it in frigid conditions at more than 30,000 feet. and back in this country, a pilot surviving this crash in southern california slamming into a fence all while trying to land in long beach. the plane destroyed but that pilot is okay. and in medical news, a thumbs up for an old weight loss tactic, fasting. a new study showing that a type

>> i'm going to do it now. >> reporter: and a chance encounter with a woman who will change their lives. >> it was like one kid, another kid, another kid and all of a sudden it was six and i ran after them. >> reporter: that young woman crystal moselle would go on to change their life and she made the documentary "the wolfpack" which debuts nationwide tonight. we're doing an hour-long special. it's an incredible story. >> where do we start? >> yeah, i know. >> all the questions we have for you. wow. >> what's their favorite movie? >> i asked them that. it's an impossible question to answer. they have watched and memorized thousands and thousands and thousands of movies. they re-enact scenes. they carefully make props out of garbage. >> so are they going to use this and become the next steven spielberg? >> well, most amazingly, one of the boys, we have videotape of him five years ago that crystal took, she's teaching him how to use a camera and push record. what a tripod is. we have videotape of him today working as a cinematographer. >> that is so cool. but they memorized the lines to all these movies. that really saved them.
