reporter: we are parallel to highway 4. if you look over my left shoulder you can see the backup. you're looking right at the san marcos boulevard exit where chp is fuming traffic around highway four because all four lanes, as you said are blocked. this is a contra costa county sheriffs case and we have put in calls to their public information officer and have not heard back. what i cantle you right now is that the backup goes for miles. thisser is clearly a very serious -- this is clearly a serious investigation since they had the highway closed off from shortly after 3:00 i spoke with a homeowner who lives above where this vehicle and is they've been stuck in traffic. the gentleman who was there said his friend has been stuck in traffic for more than an hour just trying to get off the exit. and they are on the highway. they have no estimated time for re-opening.

ashley don know hoe and oleave ya burke were celebrating a friend's birthday when they fell to their death. cornell bernard is live with more. >> reporter: ashley don know hoe was a student here at sonoma state there was a memorial reception held in her honor. a sad day for two families saying goodbye to their daughters. in. [bagpipes playing] >> mourners packed the catholic church to remember two young cousins with bright futures, killed tragically. >> with some there is a tendency to say well, it is the will of god. but you know what? god did not want this tragedy to happen. >> 22-year-old ashley don donohoe and olivia burke from ireland were good friends. they were about a birthday party when

the ball colony they were standing uneclipsed. the girls died along with four others. ashley's mother raced to the scene. >> as she saul the bodies they were holding each other. >> have the -- the families thanked the public for their prayers prayers and support. >> our daughters and the rest of these students were responsible young adults that were celebrating their friend's 21st birthday, and what they felt was a safe environment. unfortunately that turned tragic through no fault of their own. >> reporter: why the balcony gave is use under investigation. friends say ashley could few anything. >> she was a beautiful person, and everything, like her energy was so amazing. at a time like this you need someone like here. >> reporter: seven others were injured in the collapse. they are recovering. >> they're young and they're row

talk about our nation's struggle to control gun violence. sergio quintana is live from union square with more. >> reporter: one of the women who hosted talked about the same issue he talked about at the conference yesterday. mayors from across the country have been tackling the variety of issues this weekend ranging from a hike in the minimum wage to access to water even issues surrounding regulation of uber and other pioneers in the so-called sharing economy. but during the conference yesterday, president obama talked extensively about the master in charleston, south carolina this week and today hillary clinton did the same. her speech comes as the purported manifesto of confessed killer dylann roof. today clinton talk about racism in america and efforts to control gun violence. >> i am not and will not be afraid to keep fighting for
