live from the kgo broadcast center this is abc 7 news. a deadly freeway shooting shuts down traffic on highway 4 for four hours a man shot and killed while driving tonight. authorities still searching for the killer. good evening, i'm katie marzulo. >> reporter: katie i just got off the phone with the lieutenant for the sheriff's office. he says at this point investigators have exhausted all of their leads. they really are waiting on the identity to be policy confirmed by the coroner's office. so at this point they're asking for any potential witnesses to come forward. anyone who may have seen this victim before the shooting. because at this point they don't know if it was targeted or if it was a road rage incident. the witnesses are asked to call

the sheriff's office. mary smith saw massive backup on eastbound highway 4 as she approached pittsburg. >> it was like a parking lot. >> reporter: she pulled over before reaching the closure at san marcos boulevard. >> there was a shooting on the freeway. >> it sounds like they were on the right side of the highway and the victim went across all lanes and hit the center median. >> reporter: shortly after 3:00 people called 911 after the shooting. chp shut down the highway and the male driver was pronounced dead on scene. >> it was just not moving -- it moved like a couple of inches every few minutes. it was just terrible. >> reporter: it took her two hours to travel three miles. many people lost their patience. >> they were getting aggressive and using the shoulder. >> reporter: the lieutenant said the bullet casings were scattered. there was no choice but to shut

down all four lane. >> so we're getting all that cleaned up and packaging the evidence so that we can do justice for the victim's family. >> reporter: the highway opened around 9:00 some six hours later. at this point the police don't have a description of the shooter or the shooter's vehicle. in pittsburg. in oakland, a search for answers, police want to know more about the deadly shooting of a man by an armed security guard happening after two men got into a fight at international boulevard and high street late last night. the trouble may have started when the guard asked the man to leave the station. detectives have been questioning the guard. new at 11:00, one person died, another went to the hospital after a light rail train plowed into a car this evening, happening around 7:40 p.m. investigators believe the car turned into the train as it headed southbound into the median at capital avenue. >> the vehicle had made an

illegal left turn at madden avenue. and in the area there is not even a left turn pocket to make that turn. >> the car's driver died at the scene. the other person in the car was alert when they were taken to a trauma center. nobody on board was hurt. police plan to look at the cameras mounted on the train to learn what happened. in sunnyvale a woman was hit at the station. it is the 13th death this year on the caltrain tracks. and rose navarro died on scene yesterday and her 4-year-old daughter was injured when the driver rode on scene. police say the driver had been at a medical marijuana facility. and tears for the victims on the balcony collapse.

22-year-old ashley done -- donohoe and olivia burke died. >> two coffins, 22-year-old ashley donohoe of rohnert park and olivia burke died. >> they would try to fool their parents into thinking they were twins. i don't know how much they succeeded but they did try to do that. >> reporter: they were at a birthday party in berkeley when the balcony they were on collapsed. they were among six who died. the cousin were found in an embrace. olivia is remembered as kind somebody who always put the needs of others before her own. ashley, very talented student as

roof. the fbi is trying to determine if these pictures on the website and the manifesto were connected to him. one of his friends said that he had anger over george zimmerman and the killing of trayvon martin. >> he had talked about race and told me about the trayvon martin case, that he did not agree with it. it made him upset. >> demonstrators walked down the streets of charleston tonight chanting "black lives matter." and there was a rally against the confederate flag on the state house. and today, the conference was dominated in san francisco by hillary clinton as a featured speaker. sergio quintanas has more. >> katie, the issue of race and gun violence took center stage again in the second day of the conference.

donoho . covering oakland, sunnyvale and all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. firefighters across the west are working around the clock several major fires are burning in three states tonight including a 16,000 acres lake fire in san bernardino county. ryan owens is in big bear where

crews are battling the fires tonight. >> so much of the alaska wilderness is burning tonight. 85 fires scorching the state. nearly 35 homes have burned. blackhawk helicopters, the only way to get to many of the rugged acres. drought-stricken california is not doing much better. just look at the smoky haze over the san bernardino mountains east of los angeles. this blaze, known as the lake fire is the state's largest, more than 15,000 acres, big enough to see from space. on this summer weekend, firefighters have kept the flames out of the popular resort town of big bear but tonight the lake fire is just 10% contained and more than a thousand firefighters are on the front lines. >> the number one priority right now for the incident commander is to keep this fire south of the highway. >> reporter: as you can see large parts of the so-called lake fire are burning inside a national forest so firefighters

can afford to let some of this go. but the fact of the matter is mother nature is not on their team. more hot dry weather in the forecast, just what they don't need. ryan owens report tlg. three structures have been burned where flames spread to a nearby brush the fire is just 5% contained. some san francisco taxi drivers are calling on lawmakers to level the playing field regarding uber drivers. they demand that uber and lift follow stricter regulations like they do. taxi drivers say they suffered 40% pay cuts since the two companies started to operate. uber says it has made an impact on local communities by delivering quality services. lift has not responded. and many drivers face delays on highway 101 and it has

spawned a call for toll lanes along the peninsula. the city council of governments security secured more than $16 million to look at ways to ease traffic. some see it as a way to speed the commuters to san francisco and silicon valley. others prefer car toll lanes saying that the others pull out lower costs. and listening to great music while helping out. abc 7 news was in walnut creek for rock the casa anchor dan ashley created the nonprofit charity to help the bay area children. they support two causes, the court-appointed special advocates, which helps children removed from their home because of abuse or neglect and friends of camp concord which sends kids to summer camp.

live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. good evening in tonight's headlines, contra costa deputies say they have no suspects after a driver was shot and killed around 3:00 p.m. this afternoon police collected evidence while drivers were delayed for several hours. a driver died after a train and car collided. police believe the driver may have made an illegal drive into the train, nobody on the train was hurt. and a sad good-bye from cotati when two women were killed after a balcony fell. olivia burke and ashley donohoe were killed during the collapse.

and new details tonight on the search for a manhunt. the search has shifted about 350 miles. stay police received a tip that two men reacceptlooking like the escapees were spotted. a prison worker remains in custody facing charges of smuggling tools to the suspects who escaped. shootings and block parties in two cities this evening. one person died and two people wounded while gunfire happened in detroit on a basketball court. and in philadelphia, witnesses say a man fired a shotgun into a block party wounding several, an 18-year-old girl was shot in the neck. and a former white house chef is missing, oakland-born walter scheib has not been seen since last week. tonight, the search for him is

intensifying. here is devin dwyer with more. >> reporter: tonight in the new mexico mountains the search continues for a missing iron chef. walter scheib first hired by hillary clinton spent 11 years cooking for presidents. rescue crews looking for him to find him alive. >> we're looking for things like water bottles or footprints and haven't found anything. >> reporter: tonight a possible break, the investigators tracing scheib's last cell phone signal to an area, where he climbed alone without hiking boots in an area known for risks of rock slides. investigators say the 61-year-old was in good shape but an amateur hiker. >> we're not aware of any gear he had. >> police say that scheib may have taken his personal fishing gear in search of nearby streamingsstream streams. his black suburban still on scene.

vi covering antioch, petaluma and all the bay area this is abc 7 news. a new technology invented here in the bay area could soon ease some of the trauma faced by women who undergo surgery for breast cancer. as we learn it is designed to make the breast reconstruction easier and less painful. when chris kine faced a diagnosis of cancer in her left breast, she made an aggressive choice. a double mastectomy to be followed by breast reconstruction. the plastic surgeon also told chris about an experimental technology that may speed the timetable. >> we talked about the

reconstruction and implants. and she introduced the idea to me of the expanders. this simulates the planted expander underneath the skin. all patients take home is the remote. >> this is a temporary implant filled with co2 gas, placed under the skin during the surgery. later, the patient inflates the device over the course of several weeks. the point is to make it quicker and less painful than the saline injections to usually expand the skin. >> hearing they're going to be control of the expansion process to start or stop or go as quickly or slowly as they want has an additional impact. in addition, not coming in and being poked with a needle. >> we first spoke to the company

based in el paso when they first started. now they are participating in a preliminary trial. the completed data showed that women completed expansion in less time compared to the women with the saline injections. >> the doses are made very small and comfortable for the patient. >> the doctor says the time frame for the reconstruction surgery still depends on the healing process which can vary. but women using the air expanders will have their natural shape back while doctors monitor their progress. >> looking good in clothes women can look good in the expanders and go about their lives. >> chris participated in the air expander trial and believes the double mastectomy was the right decision for her. >> because i'm 65 years old. and i had places to go. and things to do and the rest of my life to live.
