>> good morning on this father's day, sunday, june 21st. i'm chris nguyen in for carolyn tyler. let's start with a first look at the forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking the conditions with where you live hi lisa. >> hi, chris. summer is going to arrive in just about 38 minutes. live doppler 7hd shows plenty of fog out there. the marine layer has grown from the overnight hours from thousand feet to 1500 feet and it will continue to deepen throughout the day. right now 62 degrees in san jose. 58 in oakland. we are looking at san jose where it's nice and sunny right now.

father's day trending cooler around the bay. upper 70s here. upper 70s to low 80s in our inland east bay. the spread is narrower and partly cloudy skies in san francisco. but we are looking a the a warmup in the extended outlook. i'll tell but it coming up. chris. >> lisa, thank you. the historic church in south carolina where a gunman shot and killed 9 people last week opened this morning for worship. ♪ ♪ members of the emanuele methodist episcopal church gathered to sing in celebration of thanksgiving. the church's pastor was among the victims. the congregation was urged to continue to fight for justice. >> the blood of the meth emanuele nine requires us to work until there is justice not

only in this case, but for those who are still living in the margin of life. those less fortunate than ourselves; that we stay on the battlefield until there is no more fights to be fought. >> 21-year-old dylann roof is being held in jail on nine counts of murder and a weapons charge. authorities say it was racially motivated. the mayor of charleston said his heart is broken by what he calls is an evil man. the mayor has been in office since 19 5 and he hasn't seen such an outpouring of grief since the assassination of president obama. he spoke with the families of the victims. >> what i saw is something that is heartwarming. there was a mixed-race audience, black and white singing and praying together to help the families and we will help the church. that's the way of helping people

move forward. >> he also said he's touched by the outpouring of support for the victims families. a private citizen handed him a check for $10,000 while the carolina panthers has contributed $100,000 to help pay for the funerals. developing news out of antioch where police found a 46-year-old woman inside a home suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. it happened on the 1300 block of d street. other participants are residents are cooperating with place, who were initially called out around 12:30 yesterday afternoon. the woman was later declared dead at the scene >> an unidentified victim was shot and killed while driving near bay point. investigators say they need help to determine what led up to the shooting. katie has the story. >> mary smith saw a massive backup on eastbound highway 4 as she approached pittsburgh. >> it was like a parking lot.

i wasn't going to take that chance. >> she pulled over before reaching the closer. >> there was a shooting on the freeway. >> sounds like they were on the far right side of the highway and the victim went across all lanes and hit the center median. >> shortly after 3:00 people called 911 as the car traveled some 300 yards before crashing into the median. >> there are about three holes in the vehicle that we could find. >> chp shut down the highway and the male driver was pronounced dead on the scene. >> only moved a couple inches every few minutes. it was terrible. >> it took elaine two hours to travel three miles. many people lost their patience. >> they were getting aggressive and using the shoulder. >> the lieutenant said bullet casings scattered. there was no option but to shut down all three points. we are getting it all cleaned up and package all the evidence so we can do justice for the victim's family.

>> the highway opened around 9:00, some six hours later. >> at this point investigators don't have a distinct description of the shooter or the shooter's vehicle. in pittsburgh, abc7 news. now to a search for answers in oakland. police want to learn more about the deadly shooting of a man by an armed security guard. it happened after the two men got into a fight at international boulevard and high street late friday night. the trouble might have started with the guard asked the man to leave the gas station. detectives had been questioning the guard. 9:06 is our time. san jose police are investigating after one person was killed and another was injured when a light rail train plowed into a car last night and it happened at capital and maddon around 7:40. investigators believe the car turned into the path of the train as it headed south along the median of capital avenue. >> the vehicle had made an illegal left turn at maddon avenue, and in the area there's not even a left turn pocket to make that turn.

>> the car's driver died at the scene. the other person was alert when they were taken to a trauma center. nobody aboard the train was hurt. police will look at cameras on the train to learn more about what happened. >> new details in a car crash that killed a woman and injured five others in vallejo. rose navarro died at the scene and her four-year-old daughter was injured had a car drove on to a sidewalk on sonoma boulevard. police say there was marijuana in the car and the driver had been at a medical marijuana dispensary before the cash. the driver has not been arrested. >> the san francisco archdiocese is conducting mass for the victims of the berkeley balcony collapse this morning at saint mary's cathedral. the service comes one day after a memorial service for two of the victims was held. the 22-year-old and 21-year-olds

were cousins. they fell to their deaths tuesday during a birthday party. katie has more. ♪ >> bagpipes lead the procession into st. joseph's catholic church. two coffins, young cousins. 22-year-old ashley of roneck park, and 21-year-old olivia of ireland. they were as close as sisters. >> they would dress alike and they would try to fool their parents into thinking that they were twins. i don't know how much they succeeded, but they did try to do that. >> they were at birthday party in berkeley tuesday when the balcony they were on collapsed. they were among six young people who died. the cousins body were found in an embrace. >> there was pain and emotion. >> olivia is remembered as kind. someone who always put the needs of others before her own. ashley, equally caring, an excellent student and talented soccer player. so fun loving, energetic

determined. and always determined to be great. she was such a great spirit. >> the only thing that is making me okay is her smile was contagious. >> the families, speaking through a friend, want people to know this. >> that ashley and olivia were two very intelligent, talented and hardworking young ladies. they had great futures ahead of them. >> at the scene of the tragedy, a memorial flowers and messages continue to grow as strangers are pulled to the site to pay their respects. >> especially being irish. irish have a thing about being family and we are a unit back home. if it's one irish person, it's the whole of ireland. >> and that was katie marzullo reporting. "the irish times" is reported four of the six irish students' bodies will be returning to ireland today. >> this could be a big day to determine whether or not the raiders have a future in oakland. there is a deadline of today to present a plan to fund coliseum city. that's a development that includes a knew the hundred million dollars stadium for the

helicopter crews at the popular big bear lake dropping thousands of gallons of water. their colleagues on the ground battling not just the heat, but the terrain. >> the extreme heat and working conditions are making it difficult for us to get a handle on some of the areas of the fire. >> ice only the beginning of the fire season, but already six states are battling wildfires. in arizona, female inmates helped beat back the largest of seven fires now burning in that state. in alaska, crews are nearly overwhelmed by more than 140 active wildfires, and more than 83,000 acres. the governor declaring a disaster in the peninsula here after the fire ravaged multiple towns there. >> that was ryan owens reporting. >> some are calling on lawmakers to level the playing field when

victory of the year at a swim in santa clara. the 18-time gold medalist came back this year after serving a suspension for a dui arrest. he is now 29 and missed a 3-peat gold medal in the 200 at the london games by just .05 second. a new world record was set in huntington beach. take a look at this. 66 surfers hung loose on a custom built 42-foot board for the record for the most people riding a board at once. video of the event was posted on youtube. they broke the record that was held in australia >> a special event was held last night for local children while listening to great music. abc7 news was at the center in walnut creek for rock the cassa. anchor dan ashley created the nonprofit charity to help bay area children. rock the cassa supports two causes, court appointed

father's day festivities? >> yeah, we never like it too hot around here, especially since we are so par,red. the cool dawn will be with us today and tomorrow, but after that all bets are off. this has been reaching across the bay. things are beginning to clear out. here's the reason why. the culprit is an area of low pressure heading up into the pacific northwest. it's making the marine layer grow taller. other highlights across the region, we have a red flag warning that has been expanded from the sierra nevada southward, all the way down to bishop. you can see it into nevada, as well. gusty winds, 40 to 45 miles an hour there and the extensive heat has been certainly a headline in the desert. this continues today, as well, in our inland areas from san diego. here's a look at summertime in san francisco.

sfo, low clouds. this is really what will be growing throughout the day today. and that's going to bring in some pleasant temperatures in our inland east bay. but it will get breezy, in the upper 60s later on today. 58 in oakland and 53 mountain view and morgan hill 57. clouds at half moon bay, 57 for you. a look at emeryville. still pretty gray out there. santa rosa 54 with the cloudy skies. 59 in fairfield and sunny skies in our inland east bay. low to mid-60s. feeling pretty good later on this afternoon. clouds here, and we are looking at a great start, but with a comfortable finish. although the water temperature is certainly cool and in the 70s at the boardwalk today. partly cloudy this morning. cooler highs for father's day. and summer just a few minutes away. we will be looking at about 14 hours 46 minutes of day light. it arrives at 9:39. felt like summer yesterday with the wide range of temperatures.

but this morning look how much cooler we are from this time yesterday. anywhere from 2 to 10 degrees cooler. the reason being we have a pretty strong southwesterly wind flowing through the delta. that's a good indicator of the cool-down being experienced today here and also down through concord and livermore. wind gusts up to 38 miles an hour there. with he will be looking at the cooler weather for a couple of days there as the heat eases. in the south bay today nice afternoon. 77 in san jose. it's already sunny there. sunny in sunnyvale and low in mid-70s here for redwood city today. 72 palo alto. 75 los altos and the fog not going anywhere. staying banked up here along the san mateo coast. even the sunset richmond district and partly cloudy skies for san francisco. cooler than afternoon today. the cooling trend continues up to the north bay. you will feel it with the breeze throughout the around. 73 in sonoma. 80s will return for lake port

and 60s across the bay. we will pinpoint your summer forecast, father's day and talk about a warmup on the way just ahead. chris. >> lisa, thank you. the search in upstate new york for two escaped murders has shifted about 350 miles. state police received a tip two men resembling the escape intos were spotted on a road near pennsylvania. it came two weeks after the men cut through their cell walls to escape from a maximum security prison near the canadian border. a prison worker remains in custody, facing charges of smuggling tools to the two men. >> shootings marred block parties in two different u.s. cities last night. in detroit one person died and ten people were wounded when had gunfire erupted on a basketball court. and in philadelphia witnesses say a person fired shots into a block party injuring seven, including an 18-year-old girl shot in the neck. 9:31 is our time. a former white house chef remains missing this morning. oakland-born walter scheib hasn't been seen since last weekend.

this morning the mystery and the search is intensifying. abc7 news reporter devin with more on the race to find him. >> in these new mexico mountains, the search intensifies for missing iron chef walter scheib. i was first hired by hillary clinton and he spent 11 years cooking for presidents. they are in a painstaking search to find him alive. >> looking for things like a water bottle, pieces of footprints and we haven't found anything. >> a possible break, tracing his last cell phone signal to an area near snow-covered lobo peek. cheyenne, climbing alone without hiking boots along the steep yerba trail, an area known for rockslides. the family tells investigator that the 61-year-old was in good shape but an amateur hiker. >> we aren't aware of any other gear he had. he may have had a water bottle with him. >> police also say that cheyenne may have taken his personal fishing gear in search of nearby streams.

>> it will kill us. we are halfway through the season. it will destroy those tomatoes out there. >> the state water board has not responded to the lawsuit saying it does not comment on pending litigation. produce prices are on the rise because of the drought. now one northern california store is trying something new. not so perfect produce. we have the details. >> and it's going to look a little different, a little wonky and have it's own aisle and signage, but it's a way for consumers to have access to producers they normally couldn't get because it was just getting tossed out. >> in fact, the national resources defense council said 40% of food grown in the u.s. is wasted each year. this grocery store say they can help cut back on that waste. >> and some goes to the applesauce manufacturer and many go to a grocery store that meet the standards. and then there are these in-between apples that maybe aren't the perfect shape or

color, but they are just as delicious and nutritious and sometimes those end up going to the landfill because there isn't someone there to buy them. that's what we are capturing the unwanted apple no one paid attention to before. >> there won't be apples when the program launches in july but there will be plums, pears and bell peppers to start. the imperfect produce will be sold for 30% off, and many shoppers seem to think it will be a pretty sweet deal. >> i have a family of five children, so i kind of always budget when i cannot. -- or when i cannot. i think it's a great way especially when it saves wasting food. >> others say they will pass. >> not interested? >> no. >> bumpy, lumpy or off-colored produce may not be everyone's top pick, but meg said she's confident many will put it to a taste test. >> we had to teach our consumers, they can trust organic, they can trust local and i think that will make it easier to have this conversation with our customers about imperfect. >> abc7 news.

clouds covering parts of san francisco and the bay bridge right now. will the city see more sun? we will get the answer from lisa coming up. a couple of years ago the bay area was blanketed with billboards advertising the nest thermostat. it's made by a local company that was acquired by google. last week jonathan bloom got to see what nest is working open since then. >> today we are going to take another big step. we are going to refresh our entire lineup of products. >> tony fadell is part of tech history. >> head of nest, tony came from apple. he is known as the father of ipod. >> the little white box that got us to give up our cd players the same way nest wants us to give up appliances from another era. >> most detectors can't tell the difference between this and smoke. the new nest can give you a gentle warning from cooking or if there's smoke or carbon monoxide, it sends a message. the furnace is where the carbon monoxide comes from and fans can blow it around.

>> it will shut off the fans. they work together. >> they are most excited about this. last year they acquired makers of the wildly popular drop cam home surveillance camera. this new version is dropping the old name. >> now it's nest cam. >> the new sharper version of the camera that's made burglars famous on youtube, now works inside the same nest app that controls the thermostat and fire detector. now it can start recording if there's a fire. everything is connected together. that's what they are building on and moving toward, and it's not fiction. they are actually building she's systems. that's where we are headed. >> nest is also the division of google that is working on on another connected product. >> tony is in charge of google glass and we asked him about that and he said he had nothing to say. >> he said you might be able to get the thermostat for free from your power company and the smoke detector free from the insurance company. >> how do i get paid to take home one of these cameras?

where we have the clearing around mt. tam and down throughout the peninsula. but right here from south city and around san carlos, stuck with the clouds over into the east bay. and as we widen the view you can see the fog from the north coast. there's that weak little weather system that will be keeping the fog in place. so a look at where we should be and where we've been. you can see our highs and the averages. so this is where we should be. 60s, 70s even the low 80s for san jose, concord mid-80s. today trending anywhere from 4 to 6 degrees cooler than average. and this will take us right into tomorrow as well. numbers will be coming up to near average midweek and then the heat is on. once again for the latter part of the work week. we have the red flag warning continuing for the northern syria into western nevada. gusts of 45 miles an hour common here and really hot numbers in the desert southwest. 98 fresno, smoky conditions for
