>> live from the kgo-tv broadcast center. this is abc7 news. >> a display of unity across the country as a nation remembers the victims of last week's deadly shooting in south carolina. from charleston to the bay area rallies were held in memory of the victims and in an effort to make change. good evening everyone. a crowd gathered at lake merritt to honor the men and women killed in the charleston church shooting. it was a call to come together to end what they call white silence. abc7 news reporter lilian kim is in the newsroom with more. lilian? >> demonstrators had a simple message tonight. white people need to speak out, because according to them white silence is violence. there wasn't a lot of diversity in this crowd and that was the point. demonstrators marched around

lake merritt to denounce the shooting in charleston and to send a message. >> it is time for white people to step up. we put it on facebook and we thought maybe 20 people would show up. now a lot of people we see have a deep call for people to this. >> marchers were given the thumbs up. they know the task before them is daunting, but the tragedy in south carolina is too much for them to sit back and do nothing. >> white supremacy is in the institutions of society and perpetuates racism. it is something we as white folks need to come together to resolve on our own. >> white supremacy is not for black people to changing the minds of people who are already simply racists. >> sharonda singleton. >> demonstrators honored the nine dead by reading each name. the toughest challenge is when the marching and chanting is over. >> we take something like this

the voices of worshipers filled the ame church in charleston, south carolina. today's services were the first since a gunman killed nine during a bible study. officers stood by for security. they marched for peace across a bridge. some hand in hand and they met midspan above the river. organizers called it a unity chain. coming up later, the growing calls for south carolina to remove the confederate flag from the state capitol. >> in san francisco hundreds of people pay tribute when a balcony collapsed in berkeley. members of northern california's irish community joined others for a mass at saint mary's cathedral. others from ireland also attended and expressed their thanks to the bay area. >> it is unbelievable.

some want an extension. >> another mass will take place in boston home of a large irish community to honor those hurt at berkeley. the bodies of two -- four of those hurt are home. another will be flown back from the bay area tomorrow. seven other young people hurt in the tragedy continue to recover at different hospitals across the east bay. police are still looking for information into a deadly highway shooting in the east bay. 20-year-old thomas mendez of pittsburgh was found dead in his car after it crashed into the center divider along highway 4 near boy paint. bay point. they believe a shooter fired from another car possibly a honda. they are asking anyone who knows anything about the shooting to call them. a memorial stands outside a gas station and convene yen stores in -- convenience store in oakland.

the guard fired after a fight broke out at interest fall boulevard and high street. san jose firefighters faced several challenges after embers from a burning home sparked other piers. sparked other fires. it started along interstate 680. they first learned about the fire when an engine company crew saw the smoke while heading to a medical emergency. >> as they made their way to the smoke columns, they had no clue the address. they said we started getting calls from the multiple neighbors. >> nobody was hurt. but crews stayed outside after hearing propane tanks. the embers from the fire ignited fences and plants around the other nearby homes. heat and dry conditions are causing problems for those battling wildfires across the west including this nearly 1,000 -acre fire that destroyed three structures in ma -- ma dare rase county.

and there are new fears that more fires could ignite. >> dozens of new fires popping up across alaska. tonight there are more across the wilderness. in california 500 residents evacuate after a new firebreaks out near san luis obispo. the state as largest fire, the so-called lake fire is burning in the san bernadino mountains east of los angeles. an aerial assault all weekend combined with the ground army of 1800 firefighters is slowing the fire's advance. tonight containment is up to 15%. in arizona they are trucking in female inhates to beat back the largest of seven fires now burning in that state. >> there is a lot of heat out there. it is a hot fire. we have a lot of work. >> and a look at firefighters hard at work on the front lines.

drew a lot of attention across the city. stephanie rawl nie gs brake will speak at the union square. they saw riot and reaction to a man in custody. it has been a major topic at the four-day nonpartisan con veption. drivers will face delays on highways 101 and 1 near the golden gate bridge starting tonight. there will be closures so the crews can install overhead signs to get ready for the opening of the new doyle drive. the lanes will close on tuesday evening between 10:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. they will close for more than three days beginning on july 9th to get the new doyle drive ready for traffic. still to come, a bay area mural targeted by vandals again. why the artist believes it is making some residents angry. apple bows to pressure from pop star taylor swift. what the company is changing after her open letter.

this is abc7 news. a mural at a gallery in the mission district of san francisco is drawing controversy. for the second time in a week the digitally printed installation which is made to look like a painting has brn defaced -- has been defaced. sergio has the story. >> it was supposed to be a mural aimed at starting a conversation that many believe is long overdue but so far the response is upsetting. >> it is a deliberate uh -- attempt to erase part of the community that they don't want

to deal with. >> it blends scenes from chicano and mexican culture with the lesbian, gay and transgender. >> a cholo and a -- a cholla with scars. there are threats with anyone wearing connection to the display. >> we have community elders to volunteer and we don't want it to escalate to people getting hurt. >> people wrote in part "i have been traveling and documenting in northern california since 2000 and have never seen any of this. i have tried contacting barrio to barrio and haven't got a response. >> the gallery already spent about $3,000 to replace the whole mural. they will spend another 3,000 volunteers to reinstall it later this week.

and a public forum is planed to talk about the issue. and there is plenty to talk about. a few people stopped to talk to me, but didn't want to be interviewed. the u.s. supreme court will meet tomorrow as the justices prepare to issue rulings on several issues including same-sex marriage by the end of the month. legal experts believe the court will legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. that's because the u.s. constitution guarantees equal treatment under the law therefore blocking same-sex marriages. they will decide on a case involving the affordable care act also known as obamacare. when taylor swift talks, apparently apple listens. apple is bowing to the pop singer's concerns on streaming service. they are changing policy and will pay royalties during the free three-month trial. she pulled her album from the service and criticized the company in an open letter to

her fans. google searches will no longer include revenge porn websites. the mountain view company's goal is to protect victims whose photos and i'm edge ins are used against them to harass or embarrass them. google's philosophy is that searches should reflect the entire worldwide web but they believe the sites are damaging and only seek to degrade the victim. it took more than a year to re-do half of the park with one of the best views of san francisco. dolores park reopened in time for father's day. the city spent $8 million on new grass more restrooms and more trashcans to cut down on the park's litter problem. >> it is worth the wait. >> they have definitely done something with flowers and cleaned it up a lot. i remember coming here when i was little and there were polluted areas like trash. there was junk everywhere. >> the upper end of the park is now closed down and will go through a similar renovation. that is expected to be done by

the u.s. open at chambers bay had its share of critics, but it did provide one of the most stunning finishes in history. he got off to a strong start. he was up by two shots at the turn. jason day played his heart out yesterday while battling vertigo and makes this birdie but eventually ran out of gas. he finished even par. after carting three bogeys on the front line he rallied on the back 9 with six birdies including this amazing effort on 14 with a 67 today the south african tied for second. johnson would falter with three bogies on four holes. he dropped three back and seemed out of it. the masters champ appeared to be in control after it put him under. with a birdie on 18 he went to the clubhouse here at four

under par. spieth would run into trouble on 17 and settling for a double bogey. that dropped him into a tie for the lead. johnson in search of his first major title joined the duo with this birdie on 17. the usga was going to alternate 18 between a par 5 and 4 but after spieth's complaint they kept it to a par 5. he settled for birdie and was in at five under. johnson got in the green on two and had this eagle putt and misses. johnson could still force a playoff, but three putts a hole. so 21-year-old jordan spieth wins the u.s. open. he is the 6th player to capture this tournament and the masters in the same year. he is also the youngest u.s. open champ since bobbie jones in 1923. >> it is amazing. it is incredible. it is really incredible to win a major championship. you only get a few moments in your lifelike this. i recognize that.

of aiding their escape. police in new orleans believe this man shot and killed one of their officers. officers arrested travis after a 24-hour manhunt. he had to be treated for dehydration. he shot a veteran officer who was driving him to jail yesterday. he was arrested on an assault charge before the shooting. california's drought has forced boat owners to pull their crafts out of a northern california lake. folsom lake is dropping nearly a foot a day and that is making things tough for boaters who rent slips at the lake. >> jason rutherford is getting ready to enjoy the day on the water with his family but for the last time this summer. >> go out and come in and wrap it up for the season. >> and they were just getting started. they got to use their slip for just one week before they had to take their boat back home. >> we are two minutes from the lake. it is great to come out.
