well, good morning, everyone. i'm reena ninan. >> i'm kendis gibson in for t.j. holmes. we'll start with the moving images of solidarity in charleston, south carolina. just days after that horrific church massacre. >> as many as 20,000 marchers united on a south carolina bridge last night. black, white, walking hand in hand in the memory of the nine lives so violently cut short. >> a debate over the confederate flag is raging far beyond south carolina. as the church known as mother emanuel reopened its doors. more now from abc's kenneth moton. >> reporter: it was a bridge to peace. a massive display of unity across the cooper river in charleston, south carolina, all to honor the nine gunned down in their home church of emanuel ame last week. >> i feel inspired. >> let's do it. >> i feel like that this showing here should be contagious and infectious across the nation. and start a movement for saying there's one race, the human race.

♪ >> reporter: hundreds filled the historic pews of emanuel, the first sunday service since accused killer 21-year-old dylann roof opened fire on a group of parishoners. investigators continue to scour over a racist manifesto supposedly written by roof. for the loved ones, the pain continues. >> i know forgiveness is a process. but i'm not there yet. >> reporter: roof, seen holding on to a confederate flag which still flies high on the state house ground. [ chanting ] >> all: take it down. >> reporter: a symbol of hate or heritage? the debate has reignited and reached the campaign trail. jeb bush saying he moved florida's confederate flag to a museum. >> i welcome any debate and any discussion that will help my state and my nation. >> this is a decision that needs to be made here in south carolina. >> reporter: kenneth moton, abc news, washington. and new this morning, the leader of a white supremacist group linked to dylann roof has donates thousands of dollars to republicans, including some

current presidential kantds. >> ted cruz, rick santorum, and rand paul allegedly received money from earl holt, president of the right wing group that roof credits with helping to radicalize him. against black people. cruz's campaign was the first to respond, saying he plans to return the money after learning about the donor's background. moving on to weather. it's severe. moving across the great lakes region this morning. some of the region's biggest cities are in harm's way. heavy rain drenched north texas on sunday. as much as six inches triggering flash floods. >> highways turned to rivers. vehicles driving straight into trouble. traffic on some roads came to a standstill because drivers were unable to move in any direction. and also in that part of texas, a swollen river washed out this bridge taking an suv along with it. the couple inside said by the time they got close enough to see the bridge had collapsed, it was too late. other drivers threw them a rope and pulled them to safety. the rushing waters under the bridge undermined its foundation.

and take a look at this road in oklahoma suffering a similar fate. the collapse caught on camera. it's party of highway 78, similarly dropping away. the guardrail is left dangling high over the red river. flooding rains like those that compromised this road targeting a different spot today. here's molly cochran at accuweather. molly, good morning. >> thank you, kendis and reena. now for monday, we do have the threat for severe weather across the upper great lakes. first up we're off to a stormy start in minneapolis and also milwaukee. flooding downpours, damaging winds, a few tornadoes could be possible. with some of these thunderstorms. next up, chicago and detroit. into our monday evening. so want to be very careful. a few scattered thunderstorms will be possible across the southeast. the main story here is the heat. we continue to just sizzle and feel very sticky and steamy. not only are we dealing with the heat here. but across the southwest, phoenix and las vegas, another

day of triple-digit heat coming up. kendis and reena, back to you. >> thank you, molly. the searing heat bad news for crews fighting wildfires in five states this morning. red flag warnings posted across six states. nevada, where new fires could erupt at any moment. here's abc's ryan owens on what firefighters are up against. >> reporter: dozens of new fires popping up across alaska. 145 are burning across its vast wilderness. more than 30 homes destroyed. in california, 500 residents evacuate after a new fire breaks out near san california's largest fire, the so-called lake fire is burning in the san bernardino mountains. an aerial assault all weekend, combined with the ground army of 1800 firefighters, is slowing this fire's advance. in arizona, they're trucking in female inmates to beat back the largest of seven fires now burning in that state.

>> there's a lot of heat out there. it's a hot fire. so -- we have a lot of work. >> reporter: ryan owens, abc news, big bear, california. there's breaking news out of afghanistan this morning. taliban and afghan police battled at the parliament building in kabul. a huge suicide car bomb was detonated outside the building. then taliban fighters stormed inside. it happened as parliament was about to vote on a new defense minister. back here at home, major developments in the search for the missing inmates from a new york state prison. the focus is now on a hunting camp about a 20-mile walk from the clinton correctional facility where the men broke out 17 days ago. overnight, police set up road blocks and called for backup from the state of vermont, the state police there. there are also reports of a dna link to the escaped prisoners in the areas within the past 24 hours. a suspect is in custody this morning in the killing of a new orleans police officer. in surveillance video obtained exclusively by our new orleans

station, travis boys is seen in a convenience store before his arrest. it's notable he's wearing a baseball jacket on a hot day. underneath that jacket, broken handcuffs. police say boys was in the back of a squad car when he managed to free himself from those handcuffs and used a hidden gun to kill officer daryle holloway. and news this morning, new this morning, billy graham's grandson resigning from a florida megachurch after admitting he had an affair. tullian tchividjian had been a pastor at coral ridge presbyterian church in ft. lauderdale. in statement to the washington post, he said he returned from an out-of-town trip to discover his wife was having an affair. during their subsequent separation, he said he developed an inappropriate relationship with a female friend. well one note from father's day. president obama spent his weekend on a golf trip in california. the first lady posting this throwback photo for father's day. her caption said thinking today and every day about the father of these two.

cigna says anthem's takeover offer, calling it quote inadequate. they also cited the data breach for anthem this year. anthem is the second largest health insurer. cigna is the fifth. they're seeking to grow to give them more negotiating power. oil prices are stabilizing now that there's progress reported on the greek debt crisis. oil had been falling and could fall again if the deal doesn't work out. there are also concerned about too much production. all of that should be good news for motorists here, where gasoline is averaging $2.79 this morning. that's practically the same as a week ago. well a study finds that american ceos make an average of more than 300 times what the average worker makes. they also make more money than other high-paid employees. six times average of the others in the top 0.1%. more proof, i guess, it's good to be king. >> more proof we should have gone to mba school.

dinosaurs still ruled the earth, or at least the box office. the body of 61-year-old walter scheib was located in the mountains near the taos, new mexico, ski area. a search team located his remains nearly two miles away from where his car was found last tuesday. he had been on a solo hike. it's believed he didn't have enough supplies for more than a day out. and some dramatic video to show you from south dakota. a guy running around an apartment complex in rapid city, busting into several apartments, helping rescue dogs while another part of the building looked like that. flames. he got at least two animals out before firefighters got to the scene. the fire started when the building was struck by lightning. actor jake lloyd is in custody this morning. he played skywalker.

i thought, "the red cross does katrina. they don't help single moms. hi. hi. what happened to our house last year? it flooded. and the water flooded out. yeah. the red cross arranged the hotel for us. they gave me that break, that leverage, to be able to get it together and... take care of them, you know? i feel like we've come full circle. like that! this is how i'll do it. sarah: there you go.
