these powerful, powerful images. as many as 15,000 people joining hands last night, walking across that bridge, a real show of unity. >> wow, that was something. really says a lot about that community. we're going to get to the breaking news on monday morning, robin. heavy police presence in a town just 20 miles from the prison in upstate new york, searching for the two escaped killers, after finding evidence they may have been at a campground there. linzie janis is in owls head, new york, with the latest. linzie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, david. hundreds of heavily armed police officers have flooded into that area. checkpoints like the one behind me, every half mile. they are searching all cars following up on a lead. the escapees could be right here. this morning, authorities possibly closing in on escaped prisoners richard matt and david sweat. hundreds of officers pouring into franklin county, a 20-mile walk from the clinton correctional facility where the two men broke out 17 days ago. setting up roadblocks. state police even calling in

backup teams from vermont. this, after searchers found a hunting camp where they think the escapees were hiding out and where one man was seen running away. local residents reported that police reported finding prison-issued underwear inside. and fingerprints matching at least one of the men. >> we have a bunch of property and some woods. it freaks me out they could be running around back there. >> reporter: also, over the weekend, a possible sighting, nearly 400 miles away, triggering a massive response. >> female reporting that she saw two males, possibly matching the description of the fugitives. >> reporter: more than 300 officers descending on the town of friendship. responding to a 911 call from a woman who said she saw the escapees near a railroad saturday afternoon. one man with a brownish, scruffy face, a dark blue hoody on. as i glanced up, he turned around immediately, pulled up the hoodie like he did not want to be seen, went back to the other side.

>> reporter: most of the reports have been reported around rail tracks some around this freight line that runs through sweat's childhood home town. focus around rail tracks. >> we'll search under every rock, behind every tree and structure until we're confident that that area is secure. >> reporter: this morning, investigators interviewing prison employees. gene palmer who guarded matt and sweat daily, placed on paid leave. emerged saturday after 14 hours of questioning. >> did you have anything to do with their escape? >> no comment at this time, but i'm here on my own free will to help and assist. >> reporter: his lawyer telling us he has not been charged with any wrongdoing. here in the adirondacks there are thousands of hunting camps and cab have been cabins. it is the start of the tourist season. we expect to hear more from authorities on the search at noon p.m. robin? >> all right, linzie, people understandably on edge. we have the latest from

charleston. where that community is continuing to heal from last week's deadly church shooting. hundreds packed the mother emanuel church on sunday. hundreds more stood outside the service. this while authorities are examining a hate-filled manifesto that could be connected to the killer. steve osunsami is there this morning in charleston. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. the first of the funerals here is now scheduled for thursday. meanwhile, investigators continue to look into the motive for the murders. the alleged racism. hand in hand, families protesting hate crimes stood across this charleston bridge. ♪ jesus said you can lean on me ♪ >> reporter: just days after nine people were murdered at this historic black church, the doors opened for sunday service and pews filled. white and black families together. >> a lot of folks expected us to do something strange.

and to break out in a riot. >> reporter: for the first time, we're getting a look inside the basement bible study room where the families say the alleged gunman, 21-year-old dylann roof, tried to shoot himself but failed. after police say they murdered their relatives. >> he actually put the gun to his head, and pulled the trigger but there were no bullets left. >> reporter: this morning, police are looking into what might be roof's manifesto posted on a website, updated an hour before the attack. the racist rants inspired by council of concerned citizens which some call a hate group. >> these sites growing year by year by year. >> reporter: roof is seen posing in front of confederate monuments. this one was vandalized sunday saying this is the problem #racist. he's being held this morning on $1 million bond. and has not yet entered a plea. police say he's confessed. in court, the victims' families spoke to him directly. >> i will never be able to hold her again, but i forgive you. we sat down with the family of

ethel lance and reverend middleton. who told us everyone is not that forgiving. >> i'm a reverend. i'm not at that point. i know forgiveness is a process. and i know with god's help that i will get there. but i'm not there yet. >> reporter: these families made it clear that a renewed conversation about race in america is part of their healing process, david? >> incredible reporting from you, steve. thank you. the tragedy reignited the debate about flying the confederate flag. some call it a symbol of hate. others call it a sign of history. now there are calls to remove it from the grounds of the south carolina capitol. jon karl has more from the white house. jon, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, david. the south carolina state legislature is expected to take up and debate whether to remove that flag early next year, just before the state's critical presidential primary. this morning, a hot debate over a symbol celebrated by accused

racist killer dylann roof. the confederate flag. a symbol for the defeated south in the civil war, but still flying high at the south carolina state capitol. >> i've always seen it as a symbol of racism. >> i do believe that it does mean pride in the south. >> helping reignite debate, republican mitt romney who tweeted, remove it now to honor charleston victims. that prompted rare bipartisan agreement. president obama replying, good point, mitt. the decision will be made by the republican-controlled south carolina state legislature. but 2016 presidential candidates are being asked to take a stand. south carolina's lindsey graham has supported the flag in the past, but he suggested it may be time for a change. >> at the end of the day, i'm more worried about the future than i am the past. >> reporter: most of the republican candidates are dodging the issue. >> this is a decision that needs to be made here in south

carolina. >> it's not an issue for a person running for president. >> reporter: jeb bush put out a statement yesterday saying he removed the flag from the florida state grounds when he was governor and he is confident south carolina will do the same thing. >> the president weighed in addressing the issue of race in a provocative interview? >> reporter: this was for a podcast called "wtf." the president was talking about the persistence of racism when he said this. >> it's not just a matter of it not being polite to say [ bleep ] in public. >> it's a little jarring to hear the president of the united states use the "n" word. the point is america is not cured of racism. his use of that word you can imagine will probably set off quite a debate. >> more to come on this. robin?

now to the severe weather all over the map. including possible tornados targeting chicago and detroit while much of the south is under water and those wildfires are scorching hundreds of akers out west. clayton sandell starts us off at the scene of serious flooding in hunt county. texas good morning, clayton. >> reporter: good morning to you. you can see this river is so far out of its banks this h road vanished. you can see, this river is so far out of its bank the this morning that this road has completely vanished under water. another 80 feet disappeared overnight. the water is still getting higher. heavy rains are wreaking havoc on the texas infrastructure this morning. bridges and roads collapsing. >> it's gone. >> reporter: drivers near dallas coming to a crawl in the downpour. this car looks like it's driving across a waterfall. parts of route 75 completely under water. days of intense rain leading to this. >> watch the road. watch the road. >> reporter: in iowa which saw

wind gusts up to 95 miles an hour a possible tornado is blamed for damaging this rv camp. this is the scene in south dakota where 100-mile-an-hour winds left destruction. this road between oklahoma and texas crumbling. in north texas, that bridge completely washed out. the couple inside this pickup, rescued by other drivers who threw them a rope, pulling them to safety. runoff from tropical storm bill's rainfall is causing major flooding. in just the last week parts of northern texas have seen 12 1/2 inches of rain, a third of their average annual rainfall, putting many drivers in precarious positions. and in missouri, powerful storms blew across parts of kansas city. waters of the fishing river overflowing its banks. now that bridge that washed out is just down the road here. this morning, they can't begin to repair it. the entire area is under water. david? >> all right, clayton sandell, thank you. right to ginger zee with the tornado threats. >> severe thunderstorms happening right now as we speak. we'll get a little bit closer where it's happening. more than 80-mile-per-hour winds already recorded.

one-inch hail near minneapolis. parts of wisconsin. and iowa. all in severe thunderstorm watches. and it will keep creeping east. that's what we're concerned about. along the warm front. chicago, grand rapids, detroit, late morning, early afternoon. it progresses eastward. the cold front comes through. the area i'm concerned for tornadoes, illinois, madison, wisconsin. down back through eastern iowa. that's that part. remember we were talking about that flooding rain thankfully drying out a bit in texas. the ball's bull's eye of heavy rain happening right there. >> i have to tell you about this. in the west, we know the situation is there. dry conditions and broiling heat fueling those wildfires. dozens burning right now. the biggest scorching nearly 20,000 acres. and abc's kayna whitworth is there for us in california's san bernardino national forest. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: we have 13 fires in 7 states.

officials here telling me the lake fire grew overnight. you can see the crews getting ready to head up to the lines again. with hotter than normal temperatures and no rain in sight, this fight is far from over. this morning, the largest fire in the state still growing now topping 17,000 acres. it may be moving away from big bear. it's six miles from the city. too close and burning too hot for charles wilson who drove 70 miles to pick up his daughter, brianna, to get her out of harm's way. >> we decided to get her and get her home and safe. >> reporter: the blaze 19% contained. but officials say it's far from under control. >> they're still very much battling the topography and the steep terrain. >> reporter: nearly 2,000 firefighters are working on the lake fire. those not in the wilderness are sleeping in these tents. more are coming every day. but fire officials have to manage this because we have three other fires burning in the state.

three homes lost hear bringing the total fire acreage closer to 20,000 throughout the state. and it's not just california. in alaska, authorities forced to measure in miles. 85 separate fires burning. covering 195 square miles. with lives and property at stake, there's no rest for the firefighters. many of them dads who spent their father's day protecting someone else's family. >> my little boy says he wants to be a firefighter. so i'm doing something right. >> reporter: the community of big bear doing what they can to show appreciation to fire fighters at the command center. they have been dropping off water, snacks, thank you cards. yesterday, they dropped off anonymous father's day cards. >> so touching, thank you for sharing that with us. let's get "gma" weekend anchor dan harris in now for amy. starting with an attack on the afghan parliament? >> that's right. good morning, guys. good morning, everybody. a large and well-coordinated attack by the taliban.

on the afghan parliament. just as lawmakers were voting. the exact moment caught on camera. [ speaking foreign language ] [ explosion ] >> wow, that explosion followed by screams. you can hear them as a huge suicide car bomb was detonated outside the building. there was confusion, there was panic but no members of parliament got hurt. dozens of people on the outside not so lucky. all of the attackers were killed. a long ordeal ended overnight for 250 airline passengers. their rome to chicago flight was diverted to belfast, ireland. where an unruly passenger was taken off and arrested. the flight crew met the work hour limits so the passengers had to wait for a new crew. many sleeping on the floor of the airport during a 21-hour delay. united is refunding the tickets. at the very least. a grim discovery on a mountain in new mexico. searchers have discovered the body of the former white house chef walter scheib. in a river near a trail where he had gone hiking more than a week ago. he cooked for the clintons and

the bushes and had just recently moved to new mexico. lifeguards at some of the most popular beaches in maine are on the lookout for a great white shark. the shark was reportedly seen by at least three witnesses over the weekend. for now, officials say there's no reason to close the beaches despite those sightings. and finally, an animal story of a much less menacing variety. unless you're a member of the philadelphia phillies. look who interrupted the game this weekend. a squirrel. climbing to the top of the netting above home plate. check it out. the rambunctious rodent jumps 30 feet and races directly into the dugout, where the players react as if they're being attacked by a herd of wildebeest. in the words of the announcer, those are professional athletes.

terrorizing them so much, they haven't even moved into their million-dollar dream home. the new owners so frightened they want their identity and address protected say that just three days after they bought the six-bedroom, $1.3 million home last june, they started receiving threatening letters. according to reports the watcher allegedly wrote that the home has been the subject of my family for decades. claiming he was put in charge of watching and waiting for its second coming. he includes an ominous question and promise. why are you here? i will find out. then the family says there's this from the watcher. i am pleased to know your names now and the name of the young blood you brought to me. >> i would be horrified. i wouldn't want a stalker. >> reporter: the family now suing the previous owners, claiming the seller allegedly received one of the letters a week before the closing and should have told them about it. adding that this will now affect the value of the home. >> the previous owners don't
