the owner says as a child, mendez was come to work with his father. >> he wanted to be just like dad, be in the kitchen and learn the cooking. >> reporter: when mendez grew up, he was hired as a cook working alongside his dad. the young man adored him, even commuted with him. but on saturday the young man drove his own car. >> usually he rides home with his dad. they usually drove in and back together. but that day, jose had to go and see his father so they drove in a different car. >> reporter: just before he left, thomas ordered hot chocolate which he was bringing to his 2-year-old daughter. >> he used to always bring her a hot chocolate. he would bring it home for his baby. >> reporter: thomas mendez never made it home to his baby nor to his longtime girlfriend. he died here on highway 4 when someone in another car opened fire causing his car to crash into the center divide.

he died the day before father's day. vick lee vic lee, abc 7 news. >> we have a go fund me link for you on our website. the san francisco giants say they're shocked and saddened to learn of the death of former outfielder darryl hamilton who was killed in an apparent murder-suicide. police found hamilton's body inside his home just outside of houston, texas, yesterday afternoon. he played 13 years in the majors, including two with the giants, 1997 and '98. he was shot multiple times. the body of 44-year-old monica jordan was found nearby with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. the couple's 14-month-old child was in the home at the time but was not hurt. darryl hamilton was 50 years old. police now say that three people were shot during the warriors celebration on friday in oakland were not linked to the parade or the rally. the shooting occurred just a few blocks from the rally.

the three men are in stable condition. it's unclear what sparked the shooting. no arrests have been made. an incoherent man who climbed that 90-story crane in downtown san jose is in jail tonight after officers tried to negotiate with him for 14 hours. the incident forced police to block off streets and a construction company had to tell 100 workers to stay home without pay. in a jailhouse interview with our media partners, the man said, quote, maybe i just need help. abc 7 news reporter david louie joins us from the scene of the standoff in san jose. david? >> reporter: cheryl, fortunately nobody was hurt in this incident. however, the incident did cause some people to get hurt in the wallet. that's in terms of lost pay and also lost time on a valuable construction project while the crane the man climbed has to undergo a safety inspection. residents of an apartment building next door noticed the man climbing the stairs to the crane about 8:30 last evening. he hunkered down in the cab the

whole night. >> i tried to negotiate with him. during the evening hours, i believe he was sleeping. he wasn't talking to the officers at all. only this morning did he begin to have a conversation with the officers. >> reporter: streets were closed off an fifth and sixth streets just north of santa clara streets in the shadow of city hall. police identify the man as 39-year-old alan skandar. the building shut off power making the crane inoperable. the project under construction is a 119-unit private student housing complex. its two-story concrete base is completed. because of the incident the company estimates it will lose between $150,000 and $200,000. >> the 100 or so workers should have been working on this building today were staying home. lost wages not to mention the schedule. >> reporter: skandar had a water

jug with him but had no food or either ran out of food. he was talked down with the offer of a breakfast burrito. he was allowed to eat it before being taken away. police say he was not injured nor were any officers. in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. in the meantime homelessness is at an all-time low in santa clara county. a survey showed a 14% drop since 2013 to just over 6,500 people. this is the lowest homeless count over the past ten years. officials credit a new pilot program for that decline. police now say a berkeley man became angry on an international flight because he wanted more nuts. and that's the reason hundreds of passengers were delayed 21 hours in ireland. 42-year-old jeremiah feed is seen here being arrested after the flight was diverted to ireland.

his behavior escalated forcing an emergency landing in belfast and his arrest. but by that time, the flight crew was at its maximum number of hours. 282 passengers had to sleep in the airport while waiting for a new crew. the plane finally landed at o'hare last night. angry san francisco cab drivers greeted visitors from the u.s. conference of mayors with a picket line and noisy protests. abc 7 news reporter jonathan bloom joins us with the story. >> reporter: this afternoon, we saw mainly two types of people here on this sidewalk, police officers and taxi drivers. the police were here guarding the delegates to the u.s. conference of mayors. they came here to visit uber's headquarters and take a tour on one of their field trips. the taxi drivers were here doing what they've come to do very well over the past couple of years, making a lot of noise. >> shame on you for going to uber headquarters!

>> reporter: mayors from across the country were greeted with this when they arrived at uber. taxi drivers are angry uber's taken a chunk out of their income. >> more cars in the streets creating traffic and congestion. >> reporter: cabbies circled the block with posters mocking san francisco's mayor. >> we want them to be aware of what uber is doing in our city. >> reporter: but the visiting mayors are drawing their own conclusions. >> i did have a chance to ride uber a couple of times when cabs weren't available. and i found the experience to be wonderful. >> reporter: the mayor of johns creek, georgia, invited uber to set up shop in his city. >> we don't want that to be overregulated. we think that innovation should come before regulation. >> reporter: madison, wisconsin, mayor wrote the failed resolution after an uber drive there was accused of sexual assault. >> we would have had the name,

the identification of the driver fingerprints. >> reporter: and he wants to make sure drivers earn a living wage. >> we're going to have a group of peasants who are not chained to the land but chained to the steering wheel of their vehicle. >> reporter: he's got at least one supporter who's running for office in san francisco. >> there needs to be consumer protections. >> reporter: but uber says they're in the minority. >> i think what we've seen are time and time again ride sharing is something people want in their communities and it's something we've seen across the entire united states that people are supporting. >> reporter: in san francisco, jonathan bloom, abc 7 news. a victim of an elder abuse cam in san francisco is getting her money back. the district attorney presented a check for $26,000 to margaret wang. restitution was made in a bogus real estate deal. it should be a lesson to

everyone, especially seniors who are often preyed upon. >> we were fortunate in getting this money back. it is much easier if you don't give up your hard-earned money without fully knowing who you're giving your money to. >> and gaskon handed out bags saying you shouldn't invest money with people you don't know. investigators are still looking into the cause of that deadly balcony collapse in berkeley. it's been almost a week now. six students were killed. seven injured. most of the victims were irish students spending the summer abroad. abc 7's wayne freedman joins us now live from the accident scene in berkeley where families still want answers. wayne? >> reporter: what we have is an interesting contrast on kittredge street. you have a growing memorial down below and a lot of people still asking questions. in the presence of tragedy with

an absence of answers, this makes sense. an ad hoc memorial that after one week still burns bright and continues to grow. >> my heart goes out to the parents whose kids are not coming home. >> reporter: six of them dead seven others injured after this now notorious balcony collapse during a party one week ago tonight. we know by now the wood had rotted on that balcony but why? the devil may be in the details of these blueprints in berkeley's planning and development office. today, however, the city had nothing to report. meantime -- >> we're basically answering, i suppose, phase two, although it's a continuum. >> reporter: the irish consul general met with reporters. phase two applies to a long process of emotional and physical recovery for the families. they have had had plenty of help from san francisco's irish community. >> what's most important to us is that the families have their space to grieve and to mourn

of markleville near the california/nevada border. it crew from 75 acres to 9,500 acres. this evening, fire officials say lightning is what started it. fire activity in california has skyrocketed in the last week. cal fire says listen the past seven days crews have responded to nearly 270 wildfires. officials say triple-digit temperature and wind make a perfect combination for fires to spread quickly. >> it's been a very busy week for us because conditions are warming up ch. with these drought conditions, that makes the fire season even harder for us. >> this year, cal fire has responded to nearly 2,500 wildfires, that before the hot, dry summer began yesterday. a majority of farmers are thumbing their noses at a state order to quit pumping water. the state water resources control board is trying to protect diminishing supplies

during our four-year drought. farmers are subject to a fine of $1,000 a day if they don't comply. there's a new listing added to san francisco's very hot real estate market. it's a fixer-upper on fourth avenue offered for $928,000. you may remember this house from news reports back in april whnen a woman's mummified body was found inside. she died several years ago and her daughter kept living in the house. they called the house a case of extreme hoarding. here's another house for sale in oakland. this one is listed as free. the catch is if you want it, you have to move it. foundation and all. the house is owned by children's hospital oakland. it's expanding. either the house is moved or it's going to be demolished. children's hospital is throwing in $20,000 to help with the move. it's always the little things that get to you especially the fees when you

fly. >> charges can really add up. you have to look for them to know exactly what you're being charged. >> this is a great time to be in the airline fee business. the carriers are raking it in. airlines took in more than $1.5 billion in add-on charges alone in the first three months of this year. it's up about 7.5% from last year. airlines have backed off their plans to force consumers to use smaller carry-on bags but i predict those proposed rules will be in effect before next summer. think about that before you purchase any new luggage. egg prices are going up because of the avian flu. but what is being charged? 7 on your side conducted a spot check and found costco charging $5.79 for two dozen eggs. that's the smallest amount they sell. safeway is charging $3.99 a

dozen, lucky $4.29. whole foods is charging $3.29. and when i dropped by, trader joe's was charging just $1.99 for a dozen. there are plenty of complaints about fake online reviews and amazon is now taking a hard line. amazon is deploying artificial intelligence to make sure customers see the most authentic reviews of a product. the algorithm will bump up reviews deemed to be the most true to customers' experiences and give extra weight to newer reviews and those reviews that have been voted by customers as being helpful. you may remember amazon has sued companies that offered to write positive product reviews for a fee. this is a practice we've also investigated in past reports. >> thank you, michael. this is pretty interesting, lawmakers in the united states believe a federal agency may be redundant thanks to google.

things turn around as we head towards the next few days. tonight, clouds near the coast will start to push in over the bay. so tomorrow morning, we wake up to gray once again. maybe some patchy drizzle for the start of the commute. you might need to use your windshield wipers as you're driving to work. temperatures by afternoon, at the coast about the same today as in the 50s. inland areas, up into the 80s where the sun will be shining. but don't get used to the 80s. the numbers will really spike as we head towards thursday. in antioch, 104 degrees for our hot spot. mid-90s by friday. and the cooling will continue as we head towards the weekend. tomorrow morning, low to upper 50s. i don't think you need to worry about bundling up in the majority. it's not going to be that cold. tomorrow afternoon 80 degrees in san jose and cupertino and the south bay. 77 in sunnyvale. on the peninsula, san mateo, 72. redwood city, 76. clouds lingering near half moon bay keeping you a lot like today in the upper 50s. 58, daly city.

interbred with the ancestors of modern europeans more previously than thought. a 37,000-year-old jawbone was studied. and it was found to be closer to human than any other closer known human. a startling new high. this is just unfortunate. a study published by the journal of the american medical association sfound 75% of men and 67% of women ages 25 and older are now considered overweight or obese. the numbers are a big jump from 20 years ago when 63% of the men and 55% of women fell into those categories. baseball and softball could be brought back to the olympics. japanese organizers announcing today eight sports are in the running to be included in the 2020 games in tokyo, including softball and baseball. they're joined by squash, karate, bowling roller sport, sports climbing and the martial
