a cat with a need for speed holding on for dear life surprising the pilot and his passenger. well, good tuesday morning to you. i'm reena ninan. >> and i'm kendis gibson in for t.j. holmes. it has been a terrifying night for one stretch of the midwest. confirmed tornadoes blazing a path across the great lakes. >> that's a quarter mile away from us right now right next to us. >> just before dark this huge twister blue over edgington in western illinois. at least five homes damaged there. a few hours later a tornado struck coal city south of chicago. emergency crews responding in the dark to collapsed homes, gas leaks, people even trapped under the rubble. >> western michigan struck, as well. that's the steeple of a church in the small town of portland.

it plunged 50 feet down through the roof. the radar shows that turbulence is moving heading east, millions of people in its path, so we turn our focus to accuweather's molly cochran tracking the storms for us. molly. >> thanks, kendis and reena. now these thunderstorms on tuesday really going to be firing up into the afternoon and evening hours. the threat for severe weather extends into new england, as well. along i-95, d.c., philadelphia and new york city, it's going to be a pretty steamy afternoon allowing for these thunderstorms to just gain a lot of strength. small hail, damaging winds and flooding downpours going to be some of the main impacts along i-95. now, across the southeast, we continue to sizzle for tuesday afternoon. our accuweather real feels getting well into the triple digits near atlanta and also myrtle beach. it looks like the heat continues into the middle half of the workweek. kendis and reena, back to you.

>> molly, thanks so much. now, to the growing chorus of powerful voices demanding that the confederate flag be removed from south carolina's statehouse grounds. >> yeah, the governor herself has acknowledged that the flag is a divisive symbol. she's among the latest to chime in on the debate picking up momentum in the wake of last week's racially motivated church massacre. we get the latest now from abc's kenneth moton. >> reporter: it's been flying high on the grounds of south carolina's capitol for more than half a century. this morning the state's republican governor is calling for the confederate flag to come down. >> we are here in a moment of unity in our state without ill will to say it's time to move the flag from the capitol grounds. >> reporter: is it hate, or is it southern heritage? >> it represents history to me. it represents my ancestors. >> we are all aware of what it really means, and that's why whenever hate groups march, a parade or rally, they use those symbols. >> reporter: 15 years ago a battle between the naacp and the state resulted in lawmakers removing the flag from the dome

of the statehouse in columbia to this location. it was a compromise many can no longer live with after this image surfaced over the weekend showing the accused killer in the charleston church massacre holding on to the confederate flag. >> we are not going to allow this symbol to divide us any longer. the fact that people are choosing to use it as a sign of hate is something we cannot stand. >> reporter: governor nikki haley may be the top official in the state, but removing the flag will take a vote from the legislature, which wraps up next week. >> i respectfully ask the general assembly to move this flag to an appropriate historical context. >> reporter: retail giant walmart originated and is still headquartered in the south. it announced it will remove all items promoting the confederate flag from its stores and website. kenneth moton, abc news, washington. and the firestorm over the flag has spread to mississippi. the house speaker there now calling for the confederate emblem to be removed from their

official state flag. republican philip gunn says mississippi's flag has become a point of offense. a new online petition to change the flag has already gotten more than 7,000 signatures. well, breaking news out of hollywood. prolific film composer james horner has died in a small plane crash. a single engine plane registered in horner's name went down yesterday 100 miles northwest of los angeles. horner's assistant says on her facebook page "we have lost an amazing person." his score for "titanic" became the best-selling movie score album of all time and shared an oscar for the hit song from it, "my heart will go on." other films included "braveheart" and "a perfect storm," more than 100 films in all. horner was 61. some new details this morning on what led police to a remote hunting cabin for those escapees. dna tests on food items in the franklin county cabin confirmed the inmates were there. searchers also found a pair

of prison issued underwear. hundreds of law enforcement officers some using dogs now in the area as residents remain on edge. >> it's a confirmed lead for us and we're going to run this to ground. >> tense, nerve-racking. we were up all night. we have the guns all ready in the house. >> this morning, a local newspaper reporting the hunting cabin is owned by a group of corrections officers. well, a judge has ordered an october trial date for the six baltimore police officers charged in the april death of freddie gray. gray's death in police custody set off days of looting and rioting in the city. all of the officers have pleaded not guilty to charges ranging from second degree murder to second degree assault. former congressman jesse jackson jr. is back at home after being released from a halfway house. jackson spent 17 months in federal prison after being convicted of political corruption. he'll serve the last three months of his sentence under house arrest with an electronic monitoring device. and on the west coast there is something new at the california capitol building.

it's an eight-foot-tall, 800-pound brown statue of former president ronald reagan. reagan was a two-term governor of california before becoming president. the statue's sculptor was also reagan's appointed white house artist. he said reagan was bigger than life and so he made the statue bigger than life, as well. well, still ahead, recalled 14 brands of bottled water pulled from shelves. what consumers need to know. and a grenade goes off in a backyard and homes are evacuated as a result. the neighbor dispute being blamed for it. plus, arrested. sean "diddy" combs taken into custody at ucla. new details about the accusations just in.

well scorching heat is adding to the fire danger in the west. crews battling 21 major fires in six different states. california's largest, the lake fire scorching 17,000 acres, now 24% contained. 200 miles north, residents evacuated after at least three homes burned. red flag warnings up even in alaska where more than 3,000 firefighters are on duty. many store brands of bottled water being recalled this morning. niagara bottling says one source was contaminated by e. coli. wegmans, shop rite and shaw's. complete list of the brands and product codes involved in the voluntary recall on our website. there have been no reports of illnesses. most e. coli is harmless. new charges leveled at the company at the heart of that

auto air bag recall. democratic members say takata put profit first and stopped safety audits to save money. the company says it only stopped audits of worker not product safety. the air bags can explode when inflated. baggage fees still a gold mine for u.s. airlines. the carriers in the first three months of the year took in $1.6 billion for that service. that by the way, is up nearly 7.5% from the same period last year. that's the most ever for first quarter. one reason is more people flew in that period also the air lines are jacking up the fees for second and third bags as well as overweight ones. free baggage and snack. is that too much to ask for. >> it is apparently. u.s. coffee consumption is down and one possible reason may surprise you. coffee pods those plastic cups now account for more than a third of all the coffee sold in the u.s. and there's much less waste, less stale coffee poured down the sink than the drip coffeemakers. >> not by anybody who is

wind, hail, even tornadoes. severe storms and more than a dozen reported tornadoes left a trail of damage across the great lakes. in edging ton, illinois strong wins ripped roofs off the homes there downed trees and power lines and gave residents a fright. a lot of cleanup to do this morning. heavy rain could lead to flooded roads in the ohio valley rolling across the northeast throughout this day. flying airport days possible in washington, d.c. philly, new york and boston. well sean "diddy" combs out of bail this morning out on bail after being arrested on suspicion of arrest with a deadly assault with a deadly weapon. >> he left an l.a. county jail last night after posting $160,000 bail. he was arrested at the ucla athletic complex. his son plays on the bruins football team. diddy is accused of using a kettle bell from the weight room in self-defense after attempting to meet with one of the team's

coaches. that coach reportedly refused to meet with diddy and things apparently escalated from there. and new england patriots quarterback tom brady will finally have his suspension appeal hearing today. he is seeking to have his four-game suspension set aside or reduced. that suspension was issued as part of the team's punishment for using underinflated footballs in january's afc title game. nfl commissioner roger goodell will be the hearing's arbitrator. a million dollar dream home has turned into a nightmare for a family in new jersey. they started receiving creepy letters just days after they closed leaving them too terrified to move in. they're from an anonymous stalker calling himself the watcher. one says he was put in charge of watching and waiting for its second coming. another saying i am pleased to know your names now and the name of the youngblood you've brought to me. the family is suing the previous owner for not disclosing the problem.

well take a look at this. the scene in florida, a neighbor neighborhood after police say a man threw a hand grenade into the next door yard. it exploded but damaged only a cement slab in the front of the house. police in 85-year-old threw it after a beef with the neighbors inside his house they might have found more grenades a machine gun and silencer. okay so summer didn't take long for the first shark of the summer to be spotted off the coast of cape cod. take a look at this 15-foot-long monster photographed yesterday. experts are reviewing the pictures to determine if it's a male or female. the sighting came a week earlier than last year's first sighting when 68 sharks were identified in those waters in total. your skinny jeans may be hazardous to your health according to a medical journal that warns that squatting in them for a long period -- who squats in them -- can damage the

damage the fire gutted the expire garage. this is where the fire is said to have started at 12:20 this morning. massive flames could be seen out of the top of the garage. crews got the flames under control by dousing it with a lot of water. two people were inside the home at time of the fire. one person was taken to the hospital with second to third degree buns. the other person inside the house was a combo said what happened. she tried to get the fire sting wisher and she went back inside to get her dog and she escaped the fire unharmed. fire crews are on the scene investigating what started the fire exactly this morning. reporting from vallejo janet o. >> metal work ignited a fire that gutted homes in livermore. fires h
