moving northeasterly. a lot of cities in the path. ginger has it all in a moment. first, alex perez starts us off in coal city. alex, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, david. many here are waking up to scenes just like this one. the winds picking up all of this debris and slamming it up against this house and just here right on the other side what used to be a car wash now basically a pile of rubble. >> look how close it is. >> reporter: disastrous tornadoes wreaking havoc across the heartland. >> never seen winds that strong. >> reporter: look at this wedge tornado forming near illinois city. winds whipping up debris so strong these telephone poles struggling to remain upright. transformers exploding. >> there's whole houses down. we need units over here. >> reporter: a tornado striking coal city just southwest of chicago. >> we've had significant damage throughout the whole town here. >> reporter: overnight, emergency crews responding in the dark to collapsed homes, gas leaks, people reportedly still trapped under rubble. >> is everybody here okay? >> yes, they're all okay.

>> reporter: earlier in the evening, first responders' vehicles trapped and destroyed before they could help others. to the east, portland, michigan, blasted by an ef-1 tornado. >> we're starting searches with canines, both live and cadaver dogs. >> reporter: abc's matt gutman was there on the ground. >> the tornado came up from there. it ripped the roof off of that church. then this church and then a third church all on the same block right across the corner. >> reporter: a drone's view showing trees shredded and roofs ripped off. in one of those churches you can see the steeple plummeting straight into the place of worship. and there, a semi tossed against a local thrift store, dozens of rescuers trying to get three temporarily trapped inside. sue burns' roof sucked right off of her house. >> i had beams flying at me and i just hit the ground. >> reporter: moments later, reunited with her husband. in iowa, winds smashing into an airport hangar, debris crushing

five planes. and luckily there were no fatalities or serious injuries here. this town was slammed by a tornado just two years ago and now that difficult process of cleaning up and rebuilding starting all over again. robin? >> it is, alex, thank you. thinking of all those affected. and there are more than 70 million in the northeast here in the path of those storms headed this way, ginger? >> there are severe storms on the map. this is early morning damage just hours ago between flint and saginaw, michigan. wjrt and marc jacobson just took this photo as the sun comes up, fresh damage pictures coming in. you can see where the storms are now. western pennsylvania and new york. the severe thunderstorm warnings and watches will move to the east. they'll progress. now i have this model on here that shows you it's scattered in nature. not going to be just one big time. you'll see several rounds of storms. some of them will come with damaging winds. and right there this evening, d.c., all the way up to boston. look at that. we're all in that enhanced risk. it's not just the northeast but

along the warm front, another low back here. afternoon and evening from lincoln to close to kansas city hail and damaging wind. david, back in the western plains just east of the rockies, too. >> we know you'll stay on it all morning long. ginger, thanks. we turn to the latest on the manhunt for those escaped killers. police are now narrowing their search after discovering dna evidence from the convicts at a hunting cabin near the prison. food inside that cabin, abc's linzie janis is in owls head, new york. linzie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, david. a heavy police presence here. officers with their shotguns at the ready have established this perimeter around that area where the cabin is deep in the woods. this morning, authorities pursuing their biggest break so far in the manhunt for escaped convicts david sweat and richard matt. focusing on everything they can find inside a hunting shack. just 20 miles from the prison. >> we have developed evidence that the suspects may have spent time in a cabin in this area.

>> reporter: dna tests on food items left in the cabin in franklin county confirming the inmates were inside. >> this is a confirmed lead for us. it has generated a massive law enforcement response as you can see. and we're going to run this to ground. >> reporter: abc news learning overnight john stockwell, who was at the hunting ground saturday with his dog, discovered signs of people inside the shack that afternoon. he says he saw at least one man running away. stockwell was questioned by police over the weekend. authorities swarming the area monday setting up checkpoints inspecting every car, searching for clues in the woods. local residents scared. have you been worried about this? have you been able to sleep at night? >> no, actually. we found out yesterday about it, so we were up all night. >> reporter: police advising everyone in the area to remain on alert. >> take any necessary safety precautions and remain vigilant about reporting anything, anything that is out of the ordinary. >> reporter: again, police

focusing their search right here near the prison, not far away. hoping that that dna evidence means the escapees are still here. david? >> all right, thanks very much. you hear the families who say they can't sleep at night. knowing that these men could have been in their neighborhood. we'll have much more. that chilling tape of richard matt before he went to prison and what the tape reveals. that's coming up here shortly. >> that is ahead. but now, david, to the growing movement to take down the confederate flag on the grounds of the south carolina statehouse. the state's governor and top lawmakers there joining the chorus calling for it to be removed after last week's shootings at that historic black church. abc's linsey davis is in columbia, south carolina, this morning, for us. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, robin. somebody just driving by just shouted, take it down. and that's exactly why the naacp is holding a rally today to get this confederate flag behind me taken down. and legislators are expected to vote as early as today about whether they'll tackle this issue now. this morning, the chorus of

calls hitting a crescendo with increased demands to remove this contentious symbol from south carolina's state capitol. >> that flag, while an integral part of our past, does not represent the future. it's time to move the flag from the capitol grounds. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: legislators standing beside her in support, including u.s. senator and gop 2016 contender lindsey graham who, only days ago, wanted discussion. but now urging the flag's removal to an appropriate location. seven other southern states use confederate imagery in their flags. three of them, mississippi, tennessee, and florida, also now calling for change. as the nation continues to grapple with the horror of the brutal slayings of nine black churchgoers by accused killer dylann roof. the reaction to the decades-long debate is now deeply connected to these pictures of roof, proudly displaying confederate images. >> it's a symbol of division

among everyone in our society. >> reporter: later this week president obama will deliver the eulogy for the senior pastor who died in this massacre. it's also interesting to note that the son of one of the victims told us that if this flag is taken down then the nine people who lost their lives will not have died in vain. david? >> powerful thing. linsey davis, thank you. we'll turn to a health alert at this hour. big bottled water recall over e. coli fears. more than a dozen brands bottled by the same company may be contaminated with the bacteria. several grocery stores involved. and abc's reena ninan with the story this morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you guys. all kinds of fancy water bottle filters that take impurities out of the water. but this morning, the nationwide recall is for water bottles that look like this one, with specific instructions on how you can protect your family. this morning a multistate recall in huge chains like 7-eleven,

wegmans and shoprite. h 2 o bottled by niagara bottling now being pulled from shelves at 14 chain stores in almost a dozen states over fears of e. coli contamination. the company issuing this alert. boil water before using. finding e. coli bacteria during a test of its pennsylvania water supply this month. niagara water voluntarily pulling the bottles from stores because e. coli can cause things like nausea and severe cramping. it's especially dangerous for children and the elderly. >> one of the ways a company knows their water is safe to drink is testing it for e. coli. if they find e. coli in there, there's something wrong with their process. >> reporter: it doesn't mean everyone who drinks water contaminated with e. coli will get sick. but with 10 billion gallons of bottled water consumed in the u.s. every year, there's the big question. how can you know if the water in the bottle you're reaching for is safe? in most cases, you can't. >> there are actually more rules and regulations around tap water.

losses passer rating, as well as air pressure, will forever be a part of tom brady's stat sheet. this doesn't look like a guy who's worried about anything. ♪ tom brady a week ago cutting loose and sweating it out on the dance floor at a party celebrating his team's super bowl win. but this morning, brady will be sweating it out in a conference room at nfl headquarters in new york where his legacy as one of football's all-time greats is on the line. >> tom brady really needs to have a performance like a super bowl in terms of this hearing. he has to rehabilitate his image. >> reporter: at issue, whether braisedy's dy brady's suspension for deflating game balls should stand. ted wells is expected to testify who wrote the report alleging brady had been at least generally aware of the actives leading to it and serving as arbitrator nfl commissioner roger goodell, who, in a rare move, chose to personally oversee this appeal, despite objections from brady's camp. both sides will get a chance to present their cases to goodell

and call witnesses, which gives brady a chance to say as much or as little as he wants. >> tom brady has been given an invitation by roger goodell to tell more of his side of the story. will he do it? he sure should. >> reporter: brady hasn't addressed the scandal publicly since his guarded comments at an appearance at salem state college a day after the wells report was released. >> we'll get through it. >> reporter: now a chance to clear his name and convince the league that he didn't cheat along the way of his hall of fame career. now, about the timeline. if they don't wrap up the hearing today, they've set aside thursday as well, they could talk about it. and as far as a decision goes, well, there is no timeline, essentially. another high-profile case of greg hardy, who appealed his ten-game suspension, that was a month ago. we're still waiting for that. and, david, it is fascinating in that room. we will not be allowed in but this is one you would put your ear up to a glass against the door the hear what's happening in that room. >> for sure. we also want more analysis on that dance video too, t.j. on tom brady. >> next half hour. >> all right. we're going to turn to trouble for sean combs known as

diddy. the rapper and music mogul arrested for assault after a fight with a football coach at his son's school. abc's kayna whitworth is live in los angeles this morning with more on that. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: hey, david, good morning to you. so i'm live here at the campus police department at ucla. this was the first place that combs was taken after he allegedly swung a kettlebell at the fablootball team's strength coach. and this morning, police are considering that gym equipment a deadly weapon. overnight sean combs posting bail hours after being arrested for allegedly threatening a strength coach at his son's ucla football workout with a kettlebell. tmz reporting the assistant coach was screaming at 21-year-old justin combs. his father watching from the sidelines then allegedly grabbing the coach and confronting him. in a statement, ucla says no one was seriously injured. ♪ i don't know why i don't know why ♪ >> reporter: but the 45-year-old rapper known to fans as diddy seen here in the back of a

police car and then in handcuffs, being walked into the jail. now facing three counts of assault with a deadly weapon one count of making terrorist threats, and one count of battery. this isn't the first time combs has had run-ins with the law. in 1999 he was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and stolen goods. but later acquitted. combs is a passionate supporter of his son justin's football career. here he is beaming at justin's first game with ucla. >> nebraska-ucla, my son's first game. words can't explain. >> reporter: combs even posting this photo of a father-son football game on father's day, just hours before the arrest. now, nobody was actually hurt, but the strength coach here reportedly sal alosi, many might remember him. back in 2010 he was suspended by the nfl for tripping a miami dolphins football player while he was on the coaching staff for the jets. and, david and robin, combs is set to appear in court on july 13th. >> all right, kayna, thanks very much. we've been following the

severe weather, also following the wildfires in the west. and dan has the latest on that. >> good morning, everyone. there's been no break from the heat for the men and women fighting 23 major wildfires in 6 states. and ginger tells me there will be no break anytime soon. the largest one in california called the lake fire scorched 17,000 acres and is only 24% contained. 200 miles north at least three homes have burned and people now being evacuated. and in alaska, more than 3,000 fighters -- firefighters are on the battle lines. in baltimore this morning all six police officers charged in the death of freddie gray have pled not guilty. they're set to go on trial in october. gray's death while in police custody set off days of rioting back in april. well, we now know what upset an airline passenger so much last weekend that he turned a rome to chicago flight into a two-day ordeal. nuts and crackers, or more precisely, a lack thereof. the man, who's 42 was allegedly

angry that he hadn't been given any snacks. the complaint says he became abusive and erratic forcing the flight to be diverted to belfast where passenger has to sleep on the floor. look at this from off the coast of cape cod. that is a 15-foot great white shark. the first to be seen in these waters so far this year. and it is a week earlier than the first sighting last year. new evidence indicates that pete rose may have done more betting on baseball than he's admitted to. our colleagues at espn say they have found new documents that suggest rose bet on games in 1986 during his last season as a player. more than a decade ago he admitted to betting on games, but only as a manager. a plane crash has much of hollywood in mourning. james horner who wrote the music for "titanic" and more than 100 other movies is believed to have died when his small plane crashed north of los angeles. he was nominated for -- ten times for oscars, winning for "my heart will go on" from "titanic." and finally this morning a big win for team usa at the women's world cup. they got off to a slow start

[ laughter ] ooh. >> went in there. started to come out there. >> reporter: the man in the video bearing little resemblance to a convict described as a charming manipulator. a dangerous killer who helped mastermind one of the most dramatic escapes ever. and just months after this video was shot matt would go on to kill and dismember his former boss. police insist he is still incredibly dangerous, on the run now as a prison escapee for more than two weeks, david. >> disturbing to say the least. gio, thanks. we turn to those vanderbilt university football players who were convicted of sexually assaulting a female student earlier this year. a judge is expected to rule later today if he will throw out their convictions, if they can

everyone walk free. abc's mara schiavocampo this morning. >> all rise. >> reporter: this morning, a tennessee judge making a crucial decision in the case of two former vanderbilt university football players convicted of an alcohol-fueled sex crime which could potentially set the men free. >> did you answer the voir dire questions truthfully? >> reporter: the defense asking for a mistrial after learning the jury foreman in the case didn't reveal he himself, was a sexual assault victim. the foreman testifying he didn't think his prior experience affected his judgment in this case. >> that had been sort of inconsequential at this point in my life. >> reporter: he voted to convict brandon van den burg and cory beattie of aggravated rape and other charges in january, after just three hours of

deliberations. to win a mistrial you have to show that it undermines the integrity of the verdict. >> we find mr. vandenburg guilty of aggravated rape. >> reporter: the two men seen here along with two others accused of bringing an unconscious victim to vandenburg's room after a night of heavy drinking in june 2013 where she was sexually assaulted. batey later testified he had no memory of have night. >> i was just drunk out of my mind. >> reporter: the victim in this case also took the stand during the trial. now bracing for a possible retrial. now, if the judge declares a mistrial, defense attorneys will likely ask that vandenburg and batey be released while they wait for a new trial. and they could walk out of jail this week. it's also possible both sides could reach a plea agreement to avoid a new trial. that ruling is expected to happen later this morning. robin? >> mara. many anxious to see what will happen. now, a look inside the "playboy" mansion. holly madison was hugh hefner's girlfriend but calls her time there a nightmare. hefner is saying she's rewriting history.

[ horn blaring ] watch again as this red suv stalled at a crossing in newark, delaware, sunday, gets slammed and pushed nearly a quarter of a mile by a freight train unable to stop. the 76-year-old driver making it out just in time, thanks to two off-duty police officers who pulled him out with only seconds to spare. >> oh! >> reporter: we've seen it before. cars getting stuck, sometimes narrowly avoiding catastrophe. other times not. >> a report of an explosion on the tracks. >> reporter: this metro north train colliding with an suv in february killing six people and hospitalizing dozens. the deadliest train accident in metro north's history. a freight train traveling at 55 miles per hour can take more than a mile, the length of 18 football fields to stop. and government statistics show trains collided with vehicles

nikki haley, joined the call saying it's time to take down the flag from the grounds of the state capitol and honor the victims of last week's church massacre. in mississippi there are calls for the confederate emblem to be removed from the state flag there and walmart says it will no longer sell merchandise featuring the flag. a health alert this morning. skinny jeans may look great but they apparently can take a serious toll on your body if you wear them at the wrong time. researchers say wearing those tight pants while squatting can actually lead to nerve damage. in one case a woman who wore skinny jeans while helping relatives move ended up in the hospital when the blood supply to her calf muscles was shut off. online shoppers have to think about five-star ratings. that's because many are fake. amazon is cracking down as abc's becky worley explains. >> reporter: online user reviews. a useful tool for shoppers from restaurants to hotels to auction sites. but an estimated 10% to 30% of

those testimonials are fake. fabricated to make you buy. to fight it amazon just announced sophisticated new technology that will comb user write-ups looking for deceptive reviews. it's a widespread problem. in april of this year, amazon sued four companies for posting fake write-ups. and new york imposed fines on 19 businesses that sold fraudulent testimonials and posted them on yelp and citysearch. amazon says this new technology will continue to learn which reviews are most helpful to customers and improve the experience over time. how easy is it to write a fake review? i searched for a product i know nothing about. fashion men's short layered wig. five stars. glowing endorsement. it took me less than 60 seconds to write a fake review for a product i've never even seen. >> it is incredibly important that the reviews be credible because this is a huge advantage that amazon and other retailers have over, you know, the physical stores. >> reporter: so making reviews more trust worthy could be a
