live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> tragedy strikes the richmond police k-9 unit one of the most respected k-9 accidents in the country. >> a k-9 officer forced to shoot another officer's dog this morning and we joined by wayne with the richmond police department. >> this happened at 6:45 this morning in the parking lot behind the police station. an for when out there. we are not,000 the dog attacked him. he was a five-year-old belgium

a male and the dog we are told is in critical condition at a vet. the dog attacked the police officer. the police officer in self-defense shot the dog. the police officer also want to the hospital. his condition is somewhat better. this police department is the second oldest k-9 unit in the state. they are an award winning unit. the police department is not going on camera to comment other than to say they are very concerned and very devastated about what happened. maybe we will get more information open this later. that is it at the moment. we did not know how it happened or why only that it had and the department is very upset. thank you wayne. new details on the house fire in vallejo that resulted from a man welding in a garage. the man is being treated neighbors are recounting their fears of the flames spreading. our reporter janet o is on the scene. janet? >> christian, the house is now boarded up and neighbors were

concerned. the flames would jump across the street and their homes would catch fire, too. the man who suffered burns was said to be working in his garage when the fire got out of control. crews were lucky huff to save part of his house. >> flames could be seen early this morning, shooting through the roof of the vallejo home. >> it was very fast. very fast. >> crews worked quickly to contain the two-alarm fire to keep it from spreading. the damage is pretty extensive to the home estimated to be more than $200,000. the cause of the fire has not been officially determined. the chief theys us what most likely started it. >> someone was working on a gasoline thank welding on it. >> angelina garcia noticed the flames from across the street at 12:30 a.m. >> i woke up because the flames kill roaring out of there and i heard him yelling to her to get out of the house.

>> bar sea said having survived a house fire themselves they sprung into action to protect their property. my husband was spraying the car and the grass in the house because it was a big fire. >> garcia called for help as her neighbor tried to put out the fire himself. >> three was taken to the hospital for second- and third-degree buns as a result. another woman in the house made it safely out with her dog and cat. garcia is relieved everyone is alive. >> i thought maybe the son was there but he was with his grand mother at another family member's home. >> as a precaution crews were out here all morning to make sure there were no more hotspots. they left the neighbor and red tagged the home so no one is allowed inside. for now, everyone is just relieved there were no more people who are or were injured from the fire. reporting live if vallejo janet o, for abc7 news.

>> happening today, east bay municipality utilities district will consider a proposal pay customers to remove their water wasting lawns as part of a conservation landscape rebate program. the water district is looking at turf removal repayments starting at 50 cents a square toot in response to the water crisis. homeowners could get up to $1,250 to replace lawns with drought-tolerant landscaping or artificial tub. the district's board of directors is taking up this afternoon. >> and one fire has burned chose to 50 town near lake tahoe and is out of control. >> there has been in break from the heat. firefighters are struggling to get an upper happened on the fires. >> helicopters, air tankers and hundreds of ground crews battled the flames at the front line.

the lake fire burning in san bernardino county has already scorched more than 17,000 acres. it is the largest wildfire in the state. only 30 percent contained. >> we are in the fourth year of a prolonged drought. the reality is the brush and trees and timber are dry. extremely dry. >> hundreds have been evacuated and vacation homes and sites are threatened. >> it is a perfect storm. there are a number of conditions that are actually driving this. the washington fire to the north is rage out of control 40 miles south of lake tahoe and a lightning strike triggered it. the fire now is larger than 15,000 acres. people would live in the small mountain town watched this smoke and packed their bags to evacuate if needed. >> it is surreal seeing it so close and the prospect of your home burning. >> lie winds mixed with the parched ground and dry trees are helping the flames move faster.
