well, good morning to you. i'm reena ninan. >> and i'm kendis gibson in for t.j. holmes. we're going to get started with that one-two punch of the most populated stretch of the country. first tornadoes and now severe storms. >> that's right. winds reaching as high as 70 miles an hour pummeled the east from washington to southern new england. >> this is a tornado. >> this is the moment those powerful winds hit the new jersey shore kicking up waves, rocking boats, shaking up the cameraman. lightning like this in maryland lit up the sky causing fires too. the death of one woman being blamed on the storm. and in coal city, illinois, a maim cleanup is under way after the city's second tornado in less than two years. abc's kenneth moton has the story. >> reporter: this is the aftermath, homes ripped apart. power lines taken down. large trees didn't have a chance as severe weather marched across

the country from the midwest to the east coast. >> the goodwill store is collapsed? >> yes, the roof fell in and there was a family in here with some kids. >> reporter: in portland, michigan, a tornado threw a semi truck into a goodwill store. those inside rescued. >> there it is, tornado right in front of us. >> reporter: there was also a twister nightmare in illinois. coal city saw the worst of it monday night when a confirmed ef-3 brought 160-mile-per-hour winds and destruction. >> just cars upside down. trees on houses. >> all the glass just exploded like a big vacuum and our ears popped and boom. >> reporter: from virginia to maine watches and warnings. in philadelphia, the violent storms knocked out power to 500,000 people and ripped trees out of the ground. >> my daughter maggie and i were standing on the front porch just watching the winds blow and the rain come down aennd all of a sudden we just heard this crash, and we saw the top

of the tree just fly past the fronts of our faces. >> reporter: residents in south jersey ran for cover as that severe weather rushed in. >> and all of a sudden this huge whoosh of wind like pushed me back, and i was like, oh, my gosh, it's here. >> reporter: here in the d.c. area, a car struck a fallen tree killing the driver. in the midwest residents are bracing themselves once again. there's another threat of severe weather. kenneth moton, abc news, washington. >> another day, another threat. our thanks to kenneth there. and, that's right, the battered midwest is about to get hit yet again. >> accuweather's molly cochran has the details. molly, good morning to you. >> thanks, kendis and reena. now we do have the threat for severe storms into wednesday from des moines into chicago. isolated tornadoes, damaging winds and flash flooding. some of the main impacts and just to the west of chicago, we had a tornado touch dounwn just the other night in coal city so here we go again as far as severe storms are concerned. want to remain on alert. across the deep south, the main

story is the heat continuing into wednesday afternoon. our accuweather realfeels, once again, getting into the triple digits from atlanta to jacksonville including raleigh. meanwhile, it's the calm after the storminess for the northeast. beautiful conditions for the afternoon from d.c. to new york city. kendis and reena, back to you. >> thank you, molly. well, a major announcement today expected from the white house about hostages held by terrorists. until now family members of hostages had been threatened with prosecution if they negotiated directly with the captors or even tried to pay ransom. that will no longer be the case under the new policy. the change is part of a major review of hostage guidelines by the white house. now, to the latest case of homegrown terror. a 19-year-old from north carolina is behind bars accused of plotting a violent attack on u.s. soil. justin sullivan was arrested in a sting operation. the fbi saying he was inspired by isis and planning to kill as many as a thousand people. his own dad tipping off authorities in an emotional 911

call. >> i don't know if it's isis or what, but i come home and he's destroying buddhas and figurines and burning stuff in the house. >> this is your son? >> yes. >> reporter: authorities believe sullivan was radicalized by isis through social media. they say he planned to use an assault rifle at a bar or concert. then move on to a bomb planted in a u-haul. politicians, retailers and everyday americans are taking sides in the battle over the confederate flag. a south carolina lawmaker voted to bedate on the future of the flag in their state capitol. hundreds rallied outside demanding that it be taken down. governors from maryland, virginia and north carolina now want the confederate symbol removed from specialty license plates, and amazon, ebay and sears have joined walmart in pulling products featuring the flag. the country is getting another look at the man accused of opening fire on the historic church. north carolina police released dash cam video of dylann roof's arrest.

you can actually see officers with guns drawn approaching his car after pulling him over. roof is then frisked, handcuffed and led away. they say a glock semiautomatic handgun was found in his trunk. an autopsy report finds that freddie gray the baltimore man who died in police custody, suffered a high-impact injury to his spine. the report indicates that injury most likely occurred when the police van gray was riding in suddenly slowed down. it compares gray's injuries to those seen in shallow diving accidents. the report also indicates that gray's death was a homicide, not an accident, because police officers, they say, failed to follow safety protocol. well, hundreds of law enforcement officers have combed through dense woods in northern new york looking for those escaped prisoners. roadblocks were set up and cars and trucks were being checked and helicopters searched overhead. a dna match to one of the prisoners was discovered not far from here. residents in this remote area

are worried. >> just crazy, it's scary. it's very scary, you know, our kids can't go outside and play. you know, they're just getting done school. we've got to keep everybody in. it's horrible. >> and we have new detail ss about how the convicts managed to get their hands on the cools used in the escape. employee joyce mitchell admitted she placed hacksaw blades and other items in hamburgers given to the men. and this note from hollywood. actor dick van patten who starred in abc's long-run gning "eight is enough" has passed away in california. he debuted at age 7 and appeared in dozens of play, some of the earliest tv shows and in movies, as well. but most people know him as tom bradford, the widower and father in the '70s show "eight is enough." van patten died from complications from diabetes. he was 86 years old. >> i loved "eight is enough." >> great show. still ahead, no more e-mail regret. the unsend button that's all the buzz. >> good. and communities on edge.

evacuate. the fire now covers more than 25 square miles near the nevada state line. petty thefts at stores really add up. a study pegs the cost of shoplifting and employee theft in the u.s. last year at $32 billion. throw in vendor fraud and paperwork errors, and the total bill is $44 billion. shoplifting, of course, is the biggest chunk of that. grocery stores see the most lost. at a congressional hearing on exploding air bags, some of the toughest words were saved for the government. the auto safety agency, specifically, some senators called it inept and threatened to stop its funding. they say that national highway traffic safety administration has, quote, blatant, management and is too cozy with automakers and parts manufacturers. and a restaurant chain has found a way to save money. don't clean the carpets as often. an internal study found many olive garden restaurants were doing the chore twice a month,

on the body on the driver's side. investigators believe it was involved in two shootings on june 3rd in loveland, colorado. one man was killed in those shootings. they are hunting for clues to link those to two other shootings one which left a second victim dead. $20,000 is being offered for any information. two former vanderbilt football players convicted of sexual assault in a high-profile trial could be released from jail soon. a judge declared a mistrial yesterday because a juror failed to disclose he had been the victim of sexual assault. the prosecution says it will retry the case but in the meantime, defense attorneys will be in court today trying to get the men released on bail. still no word on when we'll get a final decision about tom brady's deflategate suspension following his lengthy appeal hearing. the new england patriots quarterback made his case for a reduction to his four-game suspension during a ten-hour session at nfl headquarters in new york. a source tells espn brady came off as genuine and persuasive
