this is abc 7 news. >> thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> two children jump from a second story apartment to escape flames. it happened this morning on story road after their kitchen caught fire. now two neighbors are being called heroes for helping their mom escape. vic lee joins us live with more. >> reporter: fire investigators trying to figure out what caused the fire. it did start in the kitchen and they say it does not look suspicious. the fire captain says the two young men did risk themselves, put themselves at a great risk and he says normally they wouldn't encourage members of

the public to intervene like that but in this case he says they were brave and deserve to be recognized for it. >> the neighbors that assisted are good samaritans and heroes. >> the heroes of the day julio lopez injured his hands breaking the glass enclosure of the fire extinguisher. >> i run and try to break the door. >> reporter: his body was right next to him. >> i crack the window open with my hands. >> reporter: he grabbed the extinguisher and began dousing the flames and didn't realize his hand was cut. the 911 call came in shortly after 8:00 this morning. flames from the kitchen on the unit of the second floor apartment building. they helped the resident out the front door. she was suffering from smoke inhalation. stuck inside her two children

believed to be 10 to 13 years old. >> you have heavy black smoke in a second story apartment and the only mains appears to be jumping out the window. >> reporter: they were severely burned and have suffered broken bones and internal injuries. they were rushed to the burn center. there was no doubt lopez and gonzalez risked their lives today. >> those are heroes. >> reporter: gonzalez's reply to that. >> just like a normal person. >> reporter: vic lee abc 7 news. turning to our weather. here is a live look outside from our east bay hills camera. it is a scorcher today. some cities are feeling the triple digits. spencer christian is here with our accuweather update. >> we have several locations that have broken the 100 degree mark. here is a look at live doppler 7 hd. we have sunny skies on this hot

day, warm day across the bay area. here is a look at highs so far. 101 at antioch. 103. and 97 at clover dale. 99 at concord. we have lots of inland heat. on the coast 68 so far at san francisco. a wide range of our normal summer time range. and the 24 hour temperature change reflects how much warmer it is today right now than it was this hour yesterday. ten degrees warmer livermore. seven degrees warmer. let's take a look at our first forecast as we give you a view of east bay hills camera. mostly clear skies early this evening and mild. early tomorrow morning a little fog will develop but low temperatures on the mild side from 55 to 64. tomorrow another warm day but that intense heat will ease so we will see mid 90s tomorrow. today we are seeing temperatures above 100. i will have the final official

highs a little later. a cooling trend will develop beginning tomorrow. >> that is certainly good to hear. firefighters ss will welcome that news. firefighters are still on alert in antioch after a grass fire burned nearly eight hours yesterday. crews got the flames under control around 11:30 last night but firefighters are on the scene today. no structures were damaged. no one was injured. a wildfire burned more than 17,000 acres. the washington fire is burning about three miles southeast. people living there are under an evacuation advisory but there are no mandatory evacuations yet. fire officials say that fire is only 10% contained but a forecast of thunderstorms and strong winds remains a concern. someone flew an unmanned drone through restricted air space last night while firefighters were trying to battle the massive lake fire.

that forced the forest service to land aircrafts for a couple hours. >> big part of it is we had to shut down subsequent missions that could have contained that south side of the fire. the fire continues to burn. we'll get back at it today. hopefully not seeing any uavs. >> fire officials say they lost sight of the drone and couldn't track it back to the owner. described it as an orange or red drone with a four foot wing span. it has been a while since inland communities have seen such intense heat. many are making plans for staying cool and safe. eric thomas visited a public swimming pool. >> reporter: who says you can only slide down a hill on cardboard sled in the winter time? this is the kid's playground but they are still having fun. >> you try to get out earlier

individual states can ban marriage between two people of the same-sex and are considering whether a state is required to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. the high court did rule on another major issue. >> reporter: it's a collective sigh of relief for millions of americans across the country. they get to keep their health care. subsidyies will be available in all states regardless of how they were set up and the president's health care plan lives to see another day. >> i am excited today. we were uninsured. but through the market place my husband was able to get an extensive surgery. >> reporter: from the white house to the supreme court another big victory for president obama's health care law. the supreme court for a second

time upheld a major part of the affordable care act. >> today is a victory for all whose lives continue to become more secure in a changing economy because of this law. >> reporter: the court ruling by a 6-3 majority to uphold the subsidies that enable millions to have health insurance. the lawsuit was based on four words in the 900-page law established by the state. the affordable care act market places were designed to be administered by state government but only 16 agreed to do so. that is when the federal government stepped in making insurance available and paying subsidies nationwide. >> if the person challenged to the law succeeded he would have been uninsured again. >> reporter: congress passed affordable care act to improve health care markets. >> despite the disappointing decision i will not stand down in my opposition to this bad law because i know we can do better.

more than a week after that deadly balcony collapse in berkeley the district attorney announced it is launching a criminal investigation into the balcony that left six young people dead. >> reporter: the almeida county district attorney's office is conducting a criminal and civil investigation. they are looking at criminal negligence and involuntary

manslaughter charges. exactly who will be held responsible and if the charges will hold up will depend on the evidence the d.a.'s office is looking at. >> i would like to start by saying to the families of those who lost their loves ones and to our community said, each of you deserve to have this case thoroughly and exhaustively investigated. >> reporter: the district attorney says there is a lot of work to be done before they will know for sure if they can file charges guest those responsible. charges that include criminal negligence and involuntary manslaughter. >> the negligence that we will be val waited must be aggravated culpable, gross or reckless. >> reporter: those touched by the tragedy in berkeley say it is a step in the right direction. the d.a.'s office won't comment on who the key players will be

in this investigation or what other evidence aside from the balcony they will examinefelt they are saying a forensic expert will be taking a closer look at the balcony that clpsed and the balcony on the third floor that has been removed. both reveal severe dry rot. one of the victims posted on facebook that she suffered two collapsed lungs, a broken shoulder, a broken knee five broken ribs and a broken spinal cord. she says she may never walk again but is holding on to hope as she transitions to a rehabilitation center. the last of the six victims was laid to rest today. hundreds of people attended his funeral in dublin including the families of the other victims. they remembered his bright

weekend but warming up again next week and might see triple digits again next week. right now we have this hot air mass over the bay area and all of california. the heat peaks today. relief begins tomorrow as cool air moves in. further cooling over the weekend. here is a look at projected high temperature range for tomorrow. notice we see fog at the coast. some mid 90s inland so still quite warm inland and then on saturday even cooler with more extensive cloud cover. it will heat up next week. overnight mild conditions. we will see lows tonight mainly upper 50s to low 60s. and then tomorrow still warm in the south bay but not hot. we see highs in the low to mid 80s up to about 85. upper 80s as you go towards morgan hill. on the peninsula low to mid 80s and low 60s on the coast. downtown san francisco a high of 67 tomorrow. up in the north bay look for mid

live from the kgo tv broadcast center this is abc 7 news. here are the headlines where you live at 4:30. two children are in critical condition after a two alarm fire this morning in san jose. officials say the fire started in the kitchen and the children jumped 15 feet down to escape the flames. today the california state assembly passed a bill to increase the number of school children who are fully vaccinated. this video was taken of a rally against the bill held on the steps of the state capitol. summer weather has arrived here in the bay area. abc 7 weather anchor says the triple digit heat is a one day event. the cooler pattern will reduce the threat of wild fires. he will have a full forecast in just a few minutes. there is a call for fireworks free fourth of july

other buildings. the complex had been scheduled to be demolished. two firefighters were injured. an iraqi pilot training in the u.s. is still missing after he crashed in arizona. the plane crashed about five miles east of douglas municipal airport. the pilot was flying with the arizona air national guard the only person on board during the overnight training mission. the pilot had been training in the u.s. for nearly four years. a second prison worker accused of aiding those escaped said he didn't do it. he is accused of providing tools hidden inside frozen meat. he pleaded not guilty in his first court appearance. >> the allegation is that he provided needle nose pliers and a screw driver to the inmates. >> he has no knowledge that joyce mitchell had hadden contra band inside of the meal.

take a look at this big mess in massachusetts. a garbage truck driver lost control and plunged his truck into the lake. the lake holds drinking water. no trash spilled into the lake. officials say the water is still safe to drink. the driver went to the hospital. time to check on our weather which for some people is really hot today. >> the temperature said 102 in danville when i looked. >> above 100 in several locations inland but the good news is this is a one day triple digit heat wave. here is a look at live doppler hd. not a heat wave. it's a warmup. we have sunny skies and highs so far have reached 102 in antioch. we don't have it posted on the map yet. 103 and numerous locations hit upper 90s. 99 at concord.

you get the picture. this is a very warm day. tomorrow still hot in some interior sections of the state. look for highs 104. 105 at yosemite and fresno. 81 in los angeles. notice areas closer to the coast will be milder and cooler in some spots. here in the bay area cooler conditions in all areas tomorrow. highs on the coast will be low 60s. we see mid to upper 70s mainly. a few 80s. inland areas quite warm. we see mid 90s in our hottest inland locations but no triple digits. you look at the accuweather seven day forecast you can see despite the cooling trend through the weekend it will warm up next week and by next tuesday we could be looking at triple digit temperatures in our inland areas once again. the heat will not stay away. >> you can go with my official 102. i am a junior meteorologist.

off the state's coast in the past two weeks. the boy suffered minor injuries. a new recall for lulu lemon recalling more than 300,000 women's tops because of the hard hip draw strings. they whip back and can cause injuries. consumer products safety commission says the problem happens when the strings get caught on something and released. seven people have reported injuries. the ceo of japanese air bag maker takata apologized to shareholders today. at least eight people have been killed and 100 injured by the air bags which can explode. faulty air bags have resulted in recall of nearly 34 million vehicles by 11 auto makers. t mobile will allow customers to upgrade phones for free whenever they want. the jump on demand program is a leasing program. people can trade in a borrowed

seen at least three structures burn so far. >> firefighters are spraying water on other homes to try to protect them. this is all happening and cal fire is trying to close the road right now. joining us on the phone what can you tell us right now about this fire. >> good afternoon. we are currently on scene of a 40 acre grass fire working on tesla road. we have structures that are threatened. i know that we have one structure that is involved. they are requesting that we close tesla at greenville road currently. >> do you know whether or not anybody has been injured at this point? it looks pretty scary. >> we have no reports of injuries. >> what are you doing about evacuation requests? >> if there is any evacuation requests that will be handled by the sheriff's department. we are not involved with that

currently. >> are you calling in extra aid on this fire? >> so far it is cal fire and almeida county fire. i have not heard further requests. we have put in extra requests for air tankers helicopters and bull dozers. >> how bad are the winds right now? >> i don't have a speed on the winds but it can pick up pretty good in the afternoon. but i haven't got a good miles per hour for you. >> do you know if people in the area do a good job of clearing brush from around their home? >> they are really good about doing that. we have had inspectors making sure folks have been clearing and making space around their home. that should work real well for them. >> pam we thank you so much for your update. let's get more on the weather from meteorologist sandhya patel. very hot in the east bay. temperatures
