digits. what can you tell us? >> i can tell you right now that temperatures in the vicinity in the 90s and 100s. take a look as far as the wind is concerned it is starting to pick up and breezy at 17 miles per hour. 97 degrees near the fire with a relative humidity running low. 17% and as the spokesperson just mentioned the breeze can pick up through the area in the afternoon hours which is exactly what we are expecting. that is not a good thing for firefighters. back to you guys. >> thank you so much. good evening. i'm cheryl jennings. >> i'm larry beil in for dan ashley tonight. >> investigators just arrived at a home in oakland looking at the possible new lead in the disappearance of a student whose face has been on billboards for nearly 20 years. she rented a room and a cadaver dog just found the scent of

human remains. >> reporter: oakland police are now here at the home where she once lived. her family insisting there may be human remains in the basement of that house. as you can see behind me they are going through the ventilation system after a private investigator combed through here earlier this morning with his cadaver dog. >> buster let's go find. >> reporter: they have done extensive work searching for missing americans from world war ii in europe. several months ago he was contacted by a former investigator helping the family find their missing daughter. >> reach out to me many months ago saying can you go to oakland and check the house. >> reporter: the house is where she lived in 1997. she was last seen leaving her job at san francisco's crocker galleria.

the search went on for months. she has never been found. today this former detective brings renewed hope that the mystery may be solved after his dog picked up a scent from this drain near the home and then from the vents that lead to the basement. >> how sure do you think he is that there are human remains? >> there is human decomposition present here 100%. the question is what is the source of the human decomposition? that is what we hope to get with the soil analysis. >> reporter: took several samples from the soil inside the basement which will tell him if there could be human remains and possibly the time of death. >> if we get the chemicals showing that 20 year time range that would give a strong indication. >> reporter: earlier we were able to speak to her father who lives in florida. >> we are hoping to finally get some closure and be able to

finally put this case to rest and know what happened to our daughter. >> reporter: and back at the home here in oakland where she once lived oakland police department telling us they are sending a crime scene technician to go over the area to go over the findings. i have a feeling that person has already arrived here. this has not been considered a crime scene yet. they did tell us that police did tell us before that they have been here before in 1997 when she first disappeared and at that time they found nothing. i'm live in oakland, lyanne melendez. >> a man named john onuma called saying he knew where her body was. that information turned out to be false. he is still considered a person of interest. in 2003 author linked robert

durs to the case in the book about the death of derst's wife. the district attorney in almeida county opened a criminal investigation into the deadly balcony collapse. six young people were killed. the d.a.'s announcement comes two days after inspectors say the balconies beams had severe rot. >> as with any criminal inquiry we will have to headache the determination whether there are facts that support criminal charges, whether or not the charges could be proven beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. >> the last known criminal ros prosecution occurred in san francisco nearly 20 years ago. abc 7 news talked to an attorney who represented one of the injured victims. mccarthy says that property

owners and builders are being held accountable. until that happens these tragic happens will continue to happen. two children are in critical condition and san jose firefighters are calling two young men heroes in the after math of an apartment fire. the men put themselves at risk and suffered injuries when they tried to put the fire out. vic lee has the story from the apartment. >> reporter: fortunately firefighters were able to put out that blaze before it spread to other units in this apartment building. a lot of credit goes to those two young men, those two heroes. the san jose fire captain says they put themselves at risk and normally they would not encourage members of the public to intervene but in this case they were brave and deserve recognition. >> i heard the mom screaming there were kids inside so i just run to the apartment and try.

>> reporter: he injured his hand breaking the glass enclosure of a fire extinguisher. his buddy was right next to him. >> i tried to open it with my hands. >> reporter: he grabbed the extinguisher and began dousing the flames. he didn't realize his hand was cut. the 911 call came in shortly after 8:00 this morning. flames from the kitchen of a unit on the second floor apartment building. lopez and gonzalez helped the resident out the front door. she was suffering from smoke inhalation. trapped inside her two children believed to be 10 to 13 years old. >> you had a dangerous situation. you have heavy black smoke in a second story apartment. >> reporter: they jumped about 15 feet to the ground. they were severely burned and have also suffered broken bones and internal injuries. they were rushed to the burn center here at valley medical

center. >> those are heroes. the neighbors that assisted those are good samaritans and heroes. they put themselves at risk to help a neighbor. >> reporter: fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused the blaze but they say it does not look suspicious. vic lee, abc 7 news. authorities in oakland will be keeping an eye out for more than just illegal fireworks. oakland's police chief says more are celebrating by firing guns into the air. police will have extra patrols on hand. >> what goes up must come down. and bullets coming down can go through roofs and actually go into houses. people can be injured by falling bullets. >> oakland's fire department is hoping to get fireworks off the street. bins have been put for people to

turn in any firework. a controversial bill designed to increase the number of california school children who are fully vaccinated cleared a major hurdle in sacramento. opponents promise to continue the fight. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony joins us from the state capitol. >> reporter: this is not a done deal yet but nearly cleared all the hurdles and is close to becoming state law. >> i rise today in opposition to this bill. >> we know schools have to be safe. >> reporter: it was a spirited debate but in the end the california assembly passed senate bill 277 which eliminates the personal belief exemption for california school children. >> how many children have to die before we do something? i think the legislature and assembly certainly today has

storage projects and loosening environmental restrictions. it does have one democrat on board. environmentalists believe this bill would harm the environment and hurt endangered species. california lawmakers sent the governor a bill to protect people who let lawns go brown during the drought. the assembly passed a bill unanimously that is bipartisanship to prohibit local governments for penalizing residents who conserve by not watering lawns. the measure has to go back through one more legislative hoop before going to the governor. in less than an hour bart is holding a meeting to talk about reopening rest rooms at ten underground bart stations shut down because of security concerns after the september 11 terrorist attacks. if reopened there would be extra security partially transparent doors and sinks outside.

the goal is to keep people safe but some passengers are skeptical. >> i think that probably the homeless and the drug users would be in there more often so what is the safety in that? >> if bart decides to reopen the bathrooms it would start a pilot program first at two stations. the centers for disease control confirmed urine was the cause to children who got sick at antioch water park. the sicknesses at the water park included sore throats, coughing and vomiting. 17 children were taken to the hospital to be treated. technology giant apple is the latest company to jump into the debate over the confederate flag announcing it is removing apps that use the confederate flag in offensive or mean spirited ways. apple says it is not removing

apps that show the flag for educational or historical use. the latest model of google self driving cars hit the street today built to move at the touch of a button. a person will be riding inside to take control just in case of emergencies. google released its monthly accident report saying the driverless cars were involved in 13 fender benders none caused by the google car. the interior minister says uber's low cost car service has to be closed the announcement moved today after minister met with taxi drivers in france. taxi drivers accused them of stealing jobs. vandalized cars and all part of a nationwide strike against ride sharing service. what does baseball's commissioner think about the as staying in oakland? the new commissioner has not

grass fire burning outside of livermore. we spoke with a cal fire spokesperson. they tell us they are planning on closing tesla road. several structures at least one home have burned and one firefighter is injured. follow the latest developments on air and online. trying to beat the nearly 100 degree heat in antioch today. fire crews that big fire yesterday fire crews watching for hot spots following the big grass fire yesterday. 533 acres. it was contained at 100% this morning. it did force some evacuations and the cause of the fire is under investigation. investigators are asking the public to call if they saw anything suspicious. the closure of an east bay charter school has vendors demanding answers. >> to school has three east bay campuses. some who work there say they
