the supreme court rules. now reporting david muir. good morning, everyone. and we are coming on the air right now because the supreme court just ruled on the key issue of same-sex marriage. our team at the court let's get to terry moran. what have we learned terry? >> reporter: it's over. long constitutional ef debate whether the gay couples have a constitutional right to marry and the answer is yes, in every state in the united states as of now gay couples have a constitutional h right to marry. written by justice anthony kennedy finding the 14th amendment requires every state to open their marriage laws to gay couples and requires every state to h recognize the gay marriages that are performed in other states. it is an opinion just looking at it briefly that is filled with what you might call romance. a sense of the abiding connection that couples have regardless of their gender and

let me give you a very brief example. justice kennedy writing with the liberals. this is about the third or fourth major gay rights decision from justice anthony kennedy. he said nature of marriage is through its enduring bond two persons together can find other freedom such as expression intimacy and spirituality he said essentially it's a fundamental right of couples to have their marriages recognized because cons fusion guarantees equal protection of the law us and behind that building it says "equal justice under law" that h principle means that the united states is now a m nation where gay people can get married. >> terry, this is significant, the supreme court seems to have gone further than they had to. they could have if they wanted to said states have to acknowledge marriages that occurred in other states. they went further in the 5-4

done here in this opinion. a cheer, a deep cheer went right up through these thousands of people. there are people here who are not happy with this opinion, of course people who believe their faith tradition or fundamental belief about marriage and family that this contradicts that. but the vast majority of people here were very happy and you can feel it in a really special way. a very historic moment. >> terry, stick with us as our coverage continues live across the country. an historic decision from the supreme court saying same-sex marriage will be legal in every state in this country. i want to bring in chris perry and sandy steer. we followed their case for a long time. they had a case and that was to overturn proposition 8 and legalize same-sex marriage in california. chris and sandy, thanks for being with us this morning. i'm curious your reaction

7:12 am
this is being celebrated but that change is being embodied in president obama himself. you remember he ran for president for the first time in 2008 he was opposed to same-sex marriage. he was against it and now he has evolved over that time. first coming out in that interview with robin roberts. even more recently when the last case went before the court they stopped short. the white house stopped short of arguing a constitutional right to marry for same-sex couple us. this time they were fully on board and rooting from this decision. we got reaction from president obama, it comes via twitter he said today is a big step towards march towards equality. gay and lesbian thises now have the right to h marry h. h. #lovewins. and of hillary clinton, another politician previously oppose had

justice roberts telling the court if sue love joes and tom loves joe, sue can marry him and tom can't the chief justice asking why isn't that sexual discrimination and ultimately for him that was the question, terry. >> reporter: that question where he essentially said if two people love the same fern the opposite sex person can marry that person and same-sex person can't. there's a glimmer of hope among the advocates of same-sex marriage under the law that chief justice roberts might find his own path through gender discrimination. that it's merely a matter of gender that distinguishes one side from the other. that he might come over and vote for constitutionality of same-sex marriage. de not. he offered not an angry dissent, necessarily but a more gentle one. this is his last paragraph. he said if you're among the many
