he parade did not disappoint. >> reporter: you're right. it amazed many people who come here every year. believe it or not the pride parade lasted five hours. market street just re-opened 20 minutes ago. more than a million people were expected. it's estimated by police chief that even more showed up to celebrate pride and marriage equality. it's a pride parade like no other, and this year pride is everywhere. this family knew they had to be here. >> civil rights. equal for all. makes everyone more free, as obama said. >> reporter: the supreme court decision opening the door for marriage equality nationwide provided the theme for this year's parade. >> the age of 79, to see this, see marriage equality, can't get any better than that. >> you can feel the vibrations of hope and the feeling of equality. this is it.

name is, protest against facebook's real name policy. members of the harvey milk lgbt democratic club say they want facebook to accept members like transgender people who use a name other than they're legal name. there have been large protests at the company's headquarters because the company closes accounts reported to be under fake names ump protesters believe some people used the policy to unfairly target individuals. warriors president, red welch, was the parade grand marshal and brought the larry o'brien trophy to share with the crowd. he just celebrated the warriors' championship in oakland. >> don't have to choose. two million-person parades within two weeks. maybe we'll do this again next year. >> in may of 2011 he was the nation's first high-ranking professional sports executive to publicly acknowledge he is gay. it was exactly two years ago

when history was made here in california. for same-sex marriage. on june 28 2013 sandy spear and kris perry of berkeley were california's first same-sex couple to wed after the supreme court effectively inval dated proposition 8, a ban on same-sex marriage. attorney general kamala harris officiated the wedding at san francisco's city hall. we have a slide show of pictures showing the colorful highlights to the parade on the front page of our web site. abc7news.com. firefighters stopped a wildfire before it reached any homes in san jose. you can see heavy smoke rising in this cell phone video provided by carol. the fire broke out along mckeen road this afternoon. fire crews tell us the fire burned two acres when they arrived. it spread to 81 acres by the time they contained it. investigators are working to find the cause of the fire.

firefighters say 800 lightning strikes have sparked dozen new fires in northern california. the largest fire is in the san bernardino mountain charring anyone acres since it broke out june 17th. it is now 15% contained. >> let's check in now with abc7 meteorologist drew tuma. >> fire conditions were in check today. higher humidity and temperatures not too warm. lots of blue skies. if you're out on the town a nice night. by 11:00, mid-50s to 60s. an area of low pressure is right off the coast, streaming clouds up through california but changes are headed our way. a large area of high pressure over the four corners. what ill -- it will do to bring the hottest weather of the year.

>> police want to find a man's killer in fremont. his body was found this morning in bushes just inside the entrance of coyote hills regional park. park police believe he was shot in the chest and his body had only been in the park a short time. no weapons were discovered at the scene. the alameda county coroner's bureau is working to identify the victim. the park has re-opened after being closed while detectives hunted for clues. the marin county airport in novato is closed right now as federal aviation officials investigate a small plane crash. the plane, a piper cherokee came off the runway and hit an embankmentment a family of four was on board. two of the family members suffered minor injuries. one of the wings broke off the plane. the plane took off from reno, nevada. disappointment for a group of south bay students after an unmanned rocket headed to the international space station

exploded every takeoff. we're live at valley christian high school with more. >> reporter: definitely disappoint it bit they're looking to the future. some 17 projects experiments, were on the shuttle head ode to the international space station and some of the students involved in the program were up this morning to watch the spacex launch and like most people, it was unclear at first that something was wrong. however, that spacex unmanned rocket did explode on that rocket were experiments for growing plants in space experiments to protect electronics from radiation. all of these experiments are picked by students with an aim to help humanity and also things they're interested in, and they have essentially whole school year to come up with the experiment, create the experiment, and then get it into space. and while they are disappointed with the loss they didn't lose everything. >> just because our hardware was lost doesn't mean what we learned was lost. we learned to work as a team.

we learned to build these experiments. all that knowledge is still with us. and we can use that new jersey our future -- the knowledge in our future and careers as we go on. >> reporter: there are 70 students the program that combines valley christian school and the junior high and it is a worldwide program, probably 100 more students involved at schools all over the country and the world and while they did lose the physical hardware, they do have an opportunity possibly to get those experiments up to space. they'll check with the vendor to see if they can get it on the next rocket launch. that may not be spacex. mate be another provider but they're determined to get those experiments into space. we're live in san jose, abc7 news. >> that young man wise beyond his years. ahead, three-week manhunt is over tonight. police take down the convicted killer. we'll have details about the capture. the controversy over the

hospital tonight. a new york state police sergeant spotted david sweat walking on a road two miles from the canadian border and shot him twice. the saw someone who looked suspicious and took action. sweat was not armed. >> sweat fled the the trooper gave chase. the trooper was unable to catch him on foot. at one point the sergeant decided to discharge his weapon. he hitmer sweat twice in the torso. the first escape in 100 years and if you were writing a movie plot, they would say this was overdone. >> sweat and richard matt broke out of a maximum security prison more than three weeks ago. a border patrol s.w.a.t. team shot and killed matt on friday. bay area nascar fans have strong opinions bat decision to try to ban the confederate flag from all racing events. we were at the sonoma raceway
