>> thank you, michael. look what happened at sfo. a helicopter at the coast guard facility there crashed and overturned during a routine training assignment. abc 7 news reporter carolyn tyler has more on what it happened. >> reporter: yes we just got new information. the coast guard had a short news conference. what they told us there was a pilot and flight mechanic on this chopper that crashed just before 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. they just finished a routine maintenance flight to make sure the aircraft was functioning properly. and they were hovering preparing to land at this facility at the north end of the airport when this happened. from sky 7 hd hivlive, you can see the chopper. we were told it was relatively new. there it is on its side. these are the familiar helicopters used to rescue climbers from the cliff. here is more about those two men
6:03 pm
who walked away with very little injury. >> we're hovering from the ceiling, and they attempted to land. a malfunction occurred and the aircraft landed on its side. fortunately both crew members were able to exit the aircraft. >> now this all is taking place some distance from where commercial airlines land and take off. so there has been no impact on sfo. but some passengers who were landing could see quite a commotion. and the air traffic control tower was directing a southwest airlines flight, a virgin air and an alaska flight to go around. we have some of that audio. >> there are several rescue vehicles calling at once all are cleared all are holding in position. >> oh, the coast guard was doing the level and the ramp and they went down. so we have vehicles going over there. >> and again, the two men are
6:04 pm
doing okay. we are told that they were treated here on the scene. and then they were taken to sf general hospital. they believe that they have been treated and released. they were not hurt very badly. miraculously, and now, an investigation is under way. live at sfo carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. okay thank you very much. and mighty hot weather is heading our way. possibly the hottest temperatures of the year so far. we can expect at least two days of intense weather. spencer christian is here with a look at the temperatures we can expect. >> all right, dan intense an accurate description. sunny skies over the bay area tomorrow and the next day will be the hottest with the triple digit temperatures inland. look how long the heat will last an excessive heat watch begins wednesday afternoon. continues into friday morning for the northern sacramento valley and many other locations just outside the bay area will be even hotter than we expect it

6:06 pm
tomorrow morning. he also upheld a decision by a state agency earlier is that limits the number of essential workers from 475. they will have to work regardless of the strike. the county hoped to have 121 employees declared essential. >> the big challenge now is notifying the 475 employees deemed essential that they must report to work if there is a strike. those workers could play cat and mouse with deputies from the sheriff's office serving the paperwork. the president and the board of supervisors says that money is the major sticking point. while the local union has had two agreements in the past, this year they're looking for a four to five-year deal. the union has been silent all day as the negotiations reach the 11th hour. >> this is the biggest union about half of all the county employees. so every percentage point that means a lot of money. >> reporter: he says that hiring is already under way to fill positions throughout county
6:07 pm
agencies. if all goes as planned, 911 dispatchers will remain on the job. they're among the 475 employees deemed essential. where they fear it will be shorthanded is valley medical center where they would have liked to increase the county workers. the jail will be staffed by county workers, the county libraries will be impacted with health care services. if the strike is called it's how many county employees will honor the picket lines many others including the police and firefighters, belong to unions. >> you have to be concerned about one or another honoring the strike. but i think we have most of the movement figured out and i think we'll be fine. >> reporter: in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. and today, lawmakers approved a controversial bill that requires all children to be vaccinated. the bill applies to public and private school students and
6:08 pm
children enrolling in daycare. it is among the strictest vaccinations in the country. if it becomes law it will be granted to children with serious health issues. there are strong feelings from parents on both sides. >> most of the vaccines provide personal protection but they have nothing to do with anybody else's health. >> when you choose not to vaccinate you put not only your children at risk but you put your entire community at risk. >> governor brown has not said if he will sign the bill but he has until july 13th to make up his mind. >> union leaders for nurses are making known their opposition to the medical center. they fear that traffic and crowds would delay people heading to the hospital complex along third street. >> during a game obviously if emergency services are trying to get to hospitals to get the patients the critical care they need they may not be able to get

through. >> ambulances and emergency vehicles are not going to be stopped or blocked or in any way inconvenienced in getting to the hospital. >> others oppose the project, the city will hold a hearing to look at the environmental impact report. the warriors hope to open the arena in 2018. >> the people of an east bay neighborhood femaleel a lot safer tonight now that a sexual predator is back in prison. charles chrisman was moved into the area despite protests and warnings. now we find he has been sent back to prison. laura anthony has more on the story. >> reporter: hi, dan, chrisman is back at the state hospital. the residents here in the walnut creek neighborhood have been trying for months to get him moved out. as it turns out, though, he is gone but has little to do with the efforts of his neighbors. >> everybody feels more
6:10 pm
comfortable. >> reporter: word traveled fast in this walnut creek neighborhood sexually violent predator charles chrisman violated the conditions of his release. >> i know there are a lot of kids around, it is just a good feeling to know there is not a threat anymore. >> we are very excited to know that he is not our neighbor. and i'm thrilled. >> reporter: contra costa county district attorney said it is unclear if the violations were criminal in nature. at this time it doesn't appear that the misconduct involved a minor. the conduct did not occur in walnut creek. the attorney overseeing his release didn't return our calls for comment. but abc 7 learned that chrisman had some type of contact with a minor, and did not report the activity. chris man's return to the
6:11 pm
hospital comes a month after martinez's court hearing where the residents and district attorney argued the location was not suitable for the sex offender, because of the neighborhood's high number of young boys. >> placing him in the middle of 30 children, his defined prey was never a good idea and they should have known better right from the beginning. >> reporter: chrisman is being held at the hospital, pending the hearing held for july 13th in walnut creek. laura anthony. stay with us still ahead here tonight at 6:00. is the university of california doing all it can to protect women against sexual assault? three students are coming forward tonight to say no. only on abc 7 news the hair cut that got this little boy removed from his classroom. and how his mother is fighting back. the penalty that pg&e is facing for the pipeline explosion, why it could become a billion dollar

prides itself on serving. >> reporter: in a statement today, a spokesperson said while working with faculty and staff we have made great strides on this front and we are dedicated to building on those efforts. in recent months each campus has hired an advocate. a website was also launched to shed light on the issue. still, she says it's not enough. she was assaulted and while her assailant was charged and suspended he will now be allowed to return to finish his degree. >> if they really had a zero tolerance policy for sexual assault, none of our assailants would be allowed to return to school. >> when institutions end up having to pay money that seems to be what captures their attention the most. >> their attorney hopes a public trial will bring much needed transparency. at uc berkeley, leanne melendez abc 7 news. and a correctional officer with the san francisco juvenile probation department was charged in orange county with drug
