welcome back home. good morning, america. breaking news, a massive military jet crashes into a hotel overseas. dozens killed. witnesses heard a loud explosion before the plane went down as rescuers try to save people from the flaming wreckage. all the latest as we come on the air. happening now, double trouble. that fast-moving wildfire in washington state burning. at least two dozen homes to the ground. >> looks like a war zone. never seen anything like it. >> the fire igniting businesses. sending a dangerous smoke plume of ammonia in the air. this drone footage capturing the destruction and more dangerous heat on the way. air show scare. how did a 6-year-old power up this $10 million medevac helicopter. the startled spectators take cover. two injured in the rush. was it as simple as flipping a switch?

dozens and dozens of victims at this hour. the big cargo plane, a c-130, came down in a residential area in north sumatra. part of a three-story hotel and some houses were burned. officials are now saying 101 passengers were on board and a crew of 12. and that all 113 are confirmed to have died. this is a picture of an indonesian c-130. it can be used to traps port troops and/or cargo. this happened in the city of maidan. air force officials are telling us this plane developed engine trouble a couple of minutes after it took off. it's unclear if all the fatalities are from those on the aircraft only or if there were some innocent victims on the ground as well. there are some survivors in

local hospitals. it appears they may have been injured on the ground. >> a lot more to come on that story. thank you, david, very much. george, we want to move now to that wildfire burning in washington state. scorching dozens of homes forcing thousands to evacuate and there is little relief in sight. abc's neal karlinsky is on the front lines there, fire is burning just behind him. good morning to you, neal. >> reporter: lara, good morning. this is what's left of a fruit plant in downtown wenatchee that continues to burn. you can see that part of the building is collapsed over there. the siding is melted. all of this from a blaze that has wreaked havoc on this small town. this morning, the outline of a neighborhood but without the homes. at least 24 burned to the ground by this fast-moving wildfire that exploded under high winds and skormging triple-digit temperatures. >> oh, i'm so sorry. >> reporter: homeowners who lost everything learned it burned so hot, few of their belongings were recognizable. >> looks like a war zone. never seen anything like it. i don't even have a fork or a

plate or clothing. i mean you know just -- your basic things that we all take for granted. it's just gone. >> reporter: this house is one of the closest calls we've seen. the fire came down the hill. the firefighters were here. they left their hoses. they saved the house but look at the siding, melted like a candle. wenatchee, this town of 30,000 suffered a double whammy. fire ripping through hillside neighborhoods and several large businesses downtown. ignited by blowing embers and for a time leaking ammonia. nearly half the city was ordered to shelter in place to avoid the dangerous smoke plume. >> we heard four or five really big, loud explosions. >> reporter: as strike teams quickly pounce on hot spots around this town many here are worried the worst may not be behind them. >> it's going to be a scary season. >> reporter: the fire is officially now 10% contained but we haven't seen any real flames from the wildfire in the hills where all the homes are for about 24 hours now. firefighters are hopeful that

they may have turned the corner on this one. >> thank you so much, neal. the triple-digit heat fueling the fires is only getting worse. ginger zee has the latest, good morning. >> just starting to see pockets of extreme heat watch, heat advisories coming back up. you dipped in the 90s but back into the 100s we will go. spokane, 94 today. portland, 91. a big ridge off the west then it dips into the northeast and at least parts of the great lakes. and that's why we had such active severe weather in places like minnesota. look at these pictures coming out of the twin cities. wow, it looks like almost snow and here, yes, the visibility goes to near zero. this is the north suburbs of the twin cities. and they're just stopped in traffic. and you can see how the visibility they're just stopped. today, damaging wind atlanta, nashville rg all the way up into the mid-atlantic. one little pocket out in the northern plains. much more coming up. >> thank you ginger.

we'll turn now to that captured killer, david sweat. he's been talking to law enforcement a lot laying out all the details of his prison break, the original getaway plan and why he split up with richard matt. abc's linzie janis is in malone, new york, with the latest. good morning, linzie. >> reporter: good morning, george. investigators have been conducting lengthy interviews with david sweat who remains in the hospital in serious condition this morning. he has been telling them about that brazen plot and about how he and matt eluded authorities for three weeks. this morning, convicted cop killer david sweat is in custody and revealing stunning new information to investigators from his hospital bed. details on the escape plot he and fellow inmate richard matt devised. authorities say the two men planned a run south of the border with former prison worker joyce mitchell. >> they would kill mitchell's husband and then get in the car and drive to mexico. on the theory that mitchell was in love with one or both of them. >> reporter: the plot quickly unraveling when mitchell got cold feet and didn't show up with the getaway car. now mitchell speaking out from behind bars, her lawyer telling abc news his client is ecstatic

both that the manhunt has ended and also that it appears no harm came to any other person. sweat also revealing to authorities that gene palmer was not involved in the escape plan. according to officials the convicted killers seen on this surveillance camera in the woods just last week decided to head towards canada. for the best part of three weeks, the two sticking together eluding checkpoints and police searches in the dense woods. but sweat telling officials they separated in the final five days because matt was slowing him down. >> down here. they got him down here. >> reporter: matt spending some of his final hours in this abandoned camper before being shot and killed by police friday. you could see how somebody could hide out in here. >> very easily. it's dry and would keep you from the elements at least. >> reporter: 48 hours later, state police sergeant jay cook spotted sweat running on a road. sergeant cook chasing him then shooting him twice.

[ cheers and applause ] local residents celebrating in the streets, relieved it's finally over. >> we can sleep better. e we have our town back. we just -- we feel great. >> reporter: a state police source tells abc news this morning that sweat also told investigators he and matt had a transistor radio they would use to listen to news on the manhunt. and matt was smoking pot slowing him down. george. >> that would slow you down. okay, linzie, thanks very much. to donald trump. nbc giving him a taste of his own medicine saying you're fired thereby ending its relationship with the republican presidential hopeful, removing him as host of "the apprentice" and dropping his beauty pageants. linsey davis has the story. >> reporter: this morning, donald trump is firing back after nbc turned those two little words he made famous on his show "the apprentice" back at him. >> you're fired. you're fired. you're fired. >> reporter: nbc's decision to cut ties with the real estate mogul comes nearly two weeks after trump made these offensive remarks about mexican immigrants during his presidential

announcement. >> they're bringing drugs, they're bringing crime. they're rapists. >> reporter: nbc issuing a statement monday citing trump's recent derogatory statements regarding immigrants as the reason they were ending their business relationship with mr. trump, adding that the miss usa and miss universe pageants will no longer air on nbc. the donald who was greeted by roughly 100 protesters at a chicago speaking engagement monday is now threatening to sue and speaking out against nbc. >> they didn't want me to run because they wanted to do "the apprentice" and now with my statements on immigration which happen to be correct, they are going to take a different stance. >> reporter: just last week, univision announced it would no longer air miss usa or miss universe because of his comments. trump's comments monday unapologetic, sounding much more like someone who quit than got fired. >> i think as far as ending the relationship, i have to do that,

because my view on immigration is much different than the people at nbc. >> reporter: mexican media giant televiso also announced late yesterday it will no longer air the miss usa pageant. a spokesman released a statement from the pageant saying the contest will still take place july 12th and saying we are disheartened by recent events but the show will go on. the broadcast at this point will not be as the donald would say, huge. >> not this time, okay, thanks very much. he is, though, part of a huge field of presidential hopefuls about to get bigger. chris christie expected to officially today, launch his campaign. bringing the number of republican candidates to 14 and also 4 democrats running, too. and we're joined by our political analyst matthew dowd. donald trump, are we still at the point where all publicity is

good for him? >> i say, welcome to the show because running for president is a lot different than real estate and reality tv and watching donald trump reminds me a little of the disney movie "inside out" where we're hearing out loud and in realtime all the voices in his head. and it's not necessarily a good thing when you're running for president. >> not really. second in new hampshire, though. chris christie entering the race. boy, two years ago he would have been at the top of the field but starts according to our polling underwater. >> he's in a really difficult spot because now he's no longer just the one that tells it like it is. there are other candidates, ted cruz, donald trump, the authentic tell it like it is. not the only governor. there's multiple governors in this field. my guess is what he's thinking is it's going to be a game of survivor, which is he's the last person standing in the race after everybody else falls away. >> that's one of the things you're see right now and talked about this field getting so big. no one deterred. no possible candidate deterred from getting in the race right now. ? no. i think there's three reasons why it is so huge, first, this is probably the greatest opportunity in 27 years for a republican -- new republican to get elected president. it's also -- there's no dominant candidate. everybody thought -- >> not jeb bush. >> everybody thought it would be

jeb bush but he's not dominating the field. and three there's four parts of the republican party. the libertarians the establishment, the social conservatives, and the tea party. and nobody has bound them together which is the reason why we're in this situation with this many candidates. >> real free-for-all. matt, thanks. moving on to new details on that small plane that crashed into a massachusetts home, everyone on board was killed but the four people inside that home somehow managed to escape. and this morning, they're speaking out about that incredible close call. abc's gio benitez is in plainville, massachusetts, with our story. good morning to you, gio. >> reporter: lara, good morning to you. just take a look behind me. that is the charred home and just looking at it, incredible how anyone survived here. a miracle inside this plainville, massachusetts, home. hit by a small plane, the family of four inside at the time somehow surviving and speaking out this morning. >> my wife and my boys were upstairs when the plane hit. the boys' rooms are the ones you see burnt out behind me. >> reporter: the rice family

perfectly positioned in the home to avoid disaster. the two sons, 10 and 14, were in their rooms on the second floor. the mother was in the hallway. the father in the kitchen downstairs. the plane slicing through that house, they hear a bang, see a fireball, and run out. it takes just seconds for the house to go up in flames. people watching in shock. >> it sounded like a bomb. when it hit, i could feel the heat on my face. >> i have an emergency at this house. >> reporter: joez i have callister and his wife betty, from tennessee, were flying their daughter nicole to an orientation at a university sunday when their small plane crashed into that house. all three were killed. >> we have no engines. i need help. >> reporter: this morning the rice family is thinking about the kalisters. >> we need to have support for that family. they're in far graver circumstances than we are. >> reporter: and you heard that pilot there mention some sort of engine failure. well, it turns out the ntsb is now here investigating to figure out exactly what brought down

that plane. lara? >> gio, thank you. seeing that house, it's truly a miracle. thank you. we want to go to amy with today's other top stories starting with the deadly attack near the u.s. embassy in kabul. >> that's right. it's breaking news out of afghanistan right now. a huge blast aimed at coalition forces, a suicide bomber detonated a car packed with explosives in a busy shopping district near the u.s. embassy. there were no coalition casualties, but at least four afghans were killed. and an edgy day on wall street. and uncertainty for your 401(k). investors hoping to recover today from the biggest stock plunge in two years. the trouble in greece is shaking markets worldwide. banks remain shut and greece will default on a massive debt payment today. president obama planning to boost wages for millions of american workers by making them eligible for overtime. the change would affect salaried workers who earn about a thousand dollars a week. and it would take effect next year. the confederate flag may be removed from the grounds of the

south carolina state capitol for good. a survey of lawmakers shows there are enough votes to take down the tlag. debate begins on monday. and take a listen to this health alert. a possible link between citrus and skin cancer. a preliminary study found that people who ate 1 1/2 servings of citrus fruit or juice every day had a 36% higher chance of developing melanoma. the link may be a chemical in citrus that makes skin more sensitive to sunlight. the researchers say don't change your diet but do be careful in the sun. finally we know news cameras can create a big scene but take a look at this. not sure the camera operator here is koala-fied. >> oh boy. >> uh huh. yep. thank you. she just couldn't control herself when news crews came to visit the stoo there in australia. she climbed right up on top of that camera. her name is miley and she came in like a wrecking ball, guys. >> ye. wow. >> i would love to see the photographer because they're always so concerned because it's

fingers in a strange way. now there are new concerns about top-ranked player novak djokovic, how he is firing back just ahead. >> that is coming up. right now we begin with new trouble at the university of virginia. this time about hazing. a former member of the swim team filed a lawsuit against five teammates claiming he feared for his life because the hazing was so extreme. abc's mara schiavocampo with the story. good morning, mara. >> reporter: george, good morning. that student says he came to uva with dreams of competing at the highest levels. but instead, his time there ruined his athletic career. the claims just the latest in the string of image problems for the university. this morning, from the pool to the courtroom, 19-year-old anthony marcantonio, a swimming star and olympic hopeful, taking on alleged hazing at theuva. filing a lawsuit claiming that systemic threatening, degrading,

humiliating, and violent hazing by five upper classmen cost him his swim career at the university. >> they threatened him with sexual violence of a very awful variety. they were locked into a bathroom and told to drink vast quantities of alcohol. they were imprisoned in the bathroom. >> reporter: the suit claiming the upperclassmen berated and assaulted marcantonio and other new team members last summer during something known as welcome week. one of the new team members even allegedly sustained an eye injury during the activities. allegedly told by one of the uppers to lie if questioned about how he got it. the team's coach questioned marcantonio after learning of the alleged hazing. but documents say that when teammates found out, they saw him as a rat. and from that time forward, the plaintiff's swim career at uva was ruined. >> from that moment on he couldn't get in the pool when the other swimmers were there. as the coach put it to him, i can't guarantee your safety, and he had to leave. >> reporter: following the reported hazing uva suspended the upperclassmen for the rest of that semester. none of them ever rejoined the team. two of them transferring to different schools. one of the parents of the upperclassmen telling abc news

on behalf of all the defendants that they have not yet been served so can't comment on the suit. adding -- "these issues are not new. they were internally investigated by the university of virginia and handled appropriately." now, uva told abc news overnight that it investigated the allegations and quote took prompt action to provide support services to the affected students. this lawsuit seeks damages of over $75,000 though the exact amount has not been disclosed. george? >> mara, thanks very much. all right, george. now to that incident raising a lot of questions at an air show. how did a 6-year-old get behind the controls of a helicopter and then manage to start the engine? abc's alex perez has the story. >> reporter: an air show scare caught on camera. this medical transport helicopter accidentally powered up on the tarmac. but that's not the pilot behind the controls. it's a 6-year-old boy. the mayo clinic's mayo 1 chopper, on display at the minnesota air spectacular on saturday.

the child apparently able to climb into the unattended cockpit and turn on the $10 million aircraft. you see the confusion among the spectators as the rotors spin, and the wind, blowing over a nearby sun shade that hits two people injuring them. >> it is not easy to get one of these helicopters started. it's not intuitive. the one thing i wonder was he playing a video game that had a correct representation of this. >> reporter: the mayo clinic telling abc news it removed the mayo 1 from service for inspection and maintenance as it along with the ntsb and faa now look into how this happened. here's an inside look at the control panel of the same make of chopper. you can see how complex it is. how the young man was able to navigate and operate it is a real mystery. >> i would think some of the aeronautical universities might want to already extend him a scholarship. >> reporter: for "good morning america," alex perez, abc news. chicago. >> wow, that is just an amazing

story. >> interesting. >> he had such presence of mind to go save the day, that guy. >> but the video game concept is interesting. duff certainly knows how to work his way around a control. >> keep him away from a helicopter. >> i never would have thought about that. i never would have thought about a video game being the way that a kid could figure that out. and now to one tough texas grandma. the texas grandma sseur surviving 48 hours stranded in a ravine after her car went off the road. she is recovering in a hospital this morning and clayton sandell has the story. >> reporter: this morning, one tough grandmother, wanda mobley thankful to be alive after two days stranded in a texas ravine. her ordeal beginning friday morning as she was driving to a family reunion in oklahoma. >> she swerved to miss an animal in the road basically just went off an embankment and down a ravine. >> reporter: mobley injured the crash unable to walk up the steep ravine. >> i crawled on my hands and knees back to the car. >> reporter: when she didn't make it to her destination by nightfall, her worried family launching a frantic search. >> everything goes through your mind.

i mean, we stopped every silver chevrolet we saw because we couldn't find her anywhere. >> reporter: but while family members were searching, this 75-year-old surviving for 48 hours alone. >> i had some sprite in the car. that's the only thing i had. >> reporter: for two long days she prayed for help to arrive, until local authorities were able to use her cell phone signal to pinpoint her location. her grandson answering those prayers. >> i said, your voice is the voice of an angel. >> reporter: she was air-lifted to a local hospital where she's being treated for bruises and a fractured lower back. but is expected to be okay. for "good morning america," clayton sandell, abc news, denver. >> well, sprite should make sure she has a lifetime supply. >> ye. >> absolutely. she is tough. let's go to ginger and a lot of flooding in illinois. still flooding even though we'll see a dryer area for the next couple of days. look at this. just over -- you can tell that is not supposed to be water

12-year-old aidan duncan is happiest when he's on afield or on/court. but aidan is different from the other kids on this team facing a huge challenge since the day he was born. >> we found out that his left arm was not developing. it could have been because of the umbilical cord wrapping around. we did see a specialist. they told us that he would have balance issues and running would be difficult for him. >> reporter: despite what doctors predicted years ago, this is aidan today dominating the field in football, soccer, basketball and baseball. >> i probably am the fastest player on the team. i faced some challenges like swinging the bat, pitching with one hand. it takes a lot of hard work and effort. my parents have taught me to just never give up and just keep your head up and they've really kind of ignored the fact that i have one arm and they just treat me the same. >> i don't like using the word handicapped or disabled and we don't around him at all and we refer to his arm as his little arm but for the most part

[ drum roll ] >> two very creative reinventions starting with a new use for a ladder. >> right. how great is that. so if you're anything like us we're having a july 4th party at our house and space is a premium. so if you're going to serve hors d'oeuvres or drinks or desserts this is a great trick because everyone has a ladder in your basement or garage. if you don't have a metal one, throw a coat of paint on yours.

it's made of cinder block. very inexpensive, very creative, keep it outdoors and use it in your garden. >> at the end of the party -- >> you're so smart. you lambtons. >> at the end of the party, easy to break down. >> then tell me a little about this table. these are sawhorse legs. >> sawhorse legs and an old window. just put a fresh coat of paint on it and have a table ready to go. >> anything we should worry about ole windows? sometimes they used lead paint on them. do you have any advice about chipping paint if we're going to use an old win dpoe as a tabletop? you might want to be careful about that. >> exactly. a lot of times most places they will double-check if you go to buy it at an antique store if there is lead paint on it because that's what you want to be careful of. we suggest new coat of paint on top of that. >> these little legs, these sawhorse legs you can get these at a hardware store but they're also very chic and big in design so you can find high-end versions, not what we're talking about, very in fashion. >> we're going very hgtv right now. >> that's right. one more addition to our backyard party and this comes from shosura in north carolina, let's watch.
