the fire. we'll continue to bring you development, and you can follow abc7news bayarea. whether you commute by car, bus, or ferry starting this morning, many of us will be paying more for our rides. abc 7 has more live from the ferry terminal with the various fare and toll hikes kicking in today. >> reporter: good morning. if you're heading out of the house, tropical bring extra cash at least for the ferry ride. you will be paying an additional dollar roundtrip here. there are other fare hikes going on as well. golden gate toll and ferry. sf bay ferry. muni and cable cars. as for golden gate transit that operates the ferry as well as the golden gate bridge, the fare increases are part of a board-approved five-year plan. it's expected to garner $2.6 million. golden gate bridge toll plaza fares expected to increase until

july, 2018. so as of today, that means if you're going across the golden gate bridge, the toll will go up from $6 to $6.25. if you are a pay-by-plate motorist, it will go up a dollar more to $7.25. if you carpool during early hours 5:00 to 9:00, and in between 4:00 and 6:00 in the evening toll will be the cheapest at $4.25. good news is this is the last year for fare increases for ferry rides. a discount program remains in effect. if you use a clipper card, it will be cheaper. reporting live abc7 news. >> thank you very much. if you drive you may find gasoline a few cents cheaper. not because of a drop in oil prices. rather, california's gas tax went down sick -- six cents at midnight. the amount is recalculated based on the year before. a change in supply and demand

and fluctuating oil prices could eat up the price drop. the heat wave continues. parts of the bay area expecting to hit triple digitses again. temperatures hit 108 yesterday at the alameda fare in pleasanton. the first aid station handled a stream of people showing signs of heat exhaustion. that elderly lady was rushed in on a wheelchair. a fare worker sat under the misters -- a fair washington sat under the misters. it wasn't much better for animals. student exhibitors tried their best to keep livestock cool. the state agency that controls california's power supply is declaring another statewide reflect alert for today. the independent system operator is asking residents and businesses to cut back on electric use between 2:00 this afternoon and 9:00 this evening. pg&e is also urging customers to reduce energy usage during the period when air conditioners drive high energy use. yesterday was the first time cal iso issued the flex alert in two years. the blazing heat is creating prime conditions for wildfires.

we just got an update on this grass fire near gilroy. so far it's burned 50 acres, and it's 50% contained. sky 7 hd captured the flames off highway 101 yesterday. no structures are threatened. 4:33. firefighter watching for a flare-up near the bonecia bridge. two lanes of 680 were closed for a while. firefighters got the blaze under control in less than an hour. vallejo firefighters assisted with the response and shot these photos. of course, you can track the high temperatures any time with the abc7 news weather minneapolis. get it free from apple -- weather app. get it free from apple store or google play. a series of water weight increases begin today for east bay mud customers. last month the board voted to add a 25% drought fee to every customer's bill to cover the additional cost of water

supplies. the utility also approved an 8% permanent increase to replace its aging infrastructure. starting today the average homeowner will pay about $12 more per months. east bay mud's goal is to reduce water usage by 20% districtwide. former state senator leland ye will be back in court possibly to enter a plea in his corruption case. he pled not guilty last year to several charges including bribery and money laundering. his trial was set for this month, but the judge scheduled a change of plea hearing today. legal experts stay indicates he's reached a plea deal with prosecutors. ye is accused of accepting bribes in return for work in what ended up to be a phony business set up by the fbi. for the 11th time in the past year, someone cut fiber optic cables in the bay area. this morning the fbi is investigating. the cords were severed at an undisclosed location in alameda county yesterday. investigators say the vandals climbed down a manhole into a

subterranean bolt and cut the lines. it knocked out phone service and internet to thousands in the sacramento area. since july 2014, fiber optic lines in fremont, san jose walnut creek, and alamo have all been cut. the fbi is all joining the investigation into a fire that destroyed an historically black church in south carolina. tuesday night's fire at the mt. zion ame church was the seventh at an african-american house of worship in the south since nine people were massacred in charleston and since the controversy over the confederate flag erupted. at least one of those fires has been called arson related. this is the second time mt. zion has been firebombed. the klan is blamed for a 1995 blaze that burned the church to the ground. no cause has yet been given for last night's fire. some redwood tenants facing eviction are hoping for a reprieve. they're being kicked out of their apartments with nowhere to go. a story not uncommon during this real estate boom.

we have the story. >> reporter: the outlook for people at 910 clinton street in redwood city is bleak. >> we plan to negotiate and not having to go to court. >> reporter: 14-year-old gabrielle rally and showed where he lives. his parents pay $1,750 a month. finding somewhere comparable in redwood city is near impossible. eight of 18 families are staying put. >> i don't think it's a choice. we have nowhere else to go. >> it may happen to you. >> reporter: like linda howell a more than 30-year resident what's done an exhaustive housing search. >> we're not trying to be jerk. we want to move. we can't find something that we can afford. >> we're seeing that in order to pay a monthly average rent, you'ded have to -- you'd have to pay $45 an hour.

be ware of thieves in search of a precious car part. there's been a spark on catalytic converter rip-offs. crooks went on a spree in the eastern section of walnut creek. abc7's cornell barnard with details. it was awful. just rude. >> reporter: linda murphy got a big surprise monday when the family piled into their suv. >> we're heading out, started the car. and sounded like a jet engine exploding. >> reporter: the catalytic converter was ripped off from her toyota sequoia parked on the curb. it was towed to the mechanic for a costly repair. >> it's mean not nice, a $4,200 expense we have to incur. >> reporter: $4,200? walnut police say 13 catalytic converters were stolen from toyotas and tundra trucks between sunday and monday morning. >> the attraction is the precious metals inside. >> reporter: because moat toyota sequoias have a dual system, two converters. crooks can get $50 to $200 for

you may want to carefully select where you watch fireworks this 4th of july. it could affect your health. a study from the national oceanic and atmospheric administration found fireworks temporarily boost the levels of microscopic particles in the air that can pose health risks including trouble breathing. the levels fell back to normal by noon the next day. the agency recommends watching fireworks upwind to reduce your exposure. this morning, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on alcatraz island as the national parks service unveils its refurbished guard house complex. the $3 million project included work to stabilize reroof and repaint the guard house library, and schoolhouse structure. in addition some historic

features hidden for decades were restored including the building's original entrance sign. the unveiling will be held this morning before the public arrives on the island. candlestick park is all but rubble this morning. the sky 7 hd over the formal home of the giants and niners yesterday. crews have been tearing down the 55-year-old stadium for months. you can still make out the field. the goal -- the goal was to finish up yesterday. there's still more to be done before the site is completely clear. a shopping center, hotel, and housing will go up in its place. beach-goers should be able to go back into the water today in southern california following a lightning scare. lightning strikes caused by a storm forced officials to evacuate swimmers from los angeles down to san diego counties yesterday afternoon. police cruised the beaches to make sure everyone was out. nobody was hurt unlike last summer when a lightning strike killed a man at venice beach and injured about a dozen people. 4:53 now.

they can trade the stars and bars for the stars and stripes. nascar says the confederate flag will be banned from future events. girl scouts in washington state have returned a $100,000 donation after the money came with an unacceptable demand. the donor requested the girl scouts of western washington not use the money to support transgender girls. the girl scouts sent the money back and started an online campaign using the hash tag #foreverygirl. in a little more than a day they've raised more than $245,000. >> we know who we are as an organization and what we stand for. and when we can't use the found support what we stand for, it's easy. we'll give it back. >> the troop says the money raised will enable 1,000 girls to fully participate in its programs for free. you could say one man is in the doghouse this morning after being caught letting his best friend drive his scooter. >> take a look at this video out
